DIY Boat Flooring EVA Foam Decking My Boston Whaler Montauk 🔥 #boatrepair #bostonwhaler #floor #diy
DIY Boat Flooring EVA Foam Boat Decking to My Boston Whaler Montauk 17
Adding an EVA foam boat decking is a great idea. I was happy with the results on my boat, but when I got a great deal on some of this decking, I couldn’t pass it up. It is quite expensive to have it done professionally, but, if you take your time, it is a feasible DIY project. EVA foam offers exceptional traction, reducing the risk of slipping on wet surfaces. It also gives you a cushioned surface, which makes walking around the boat more comfortable. I’m usually barefoot on my boat, so it is definitely great on your feet! The foam also acts as a shock absorber, minimizing the impact from waves and movement, making the ride smoother.
Another advantage is the durability and water-resistance of EVA foam. Unlike traditional decking materials, it won't rot or mildew, making it ideal for the marine environment. It's also UV-resistant, helping it maintain its color and integrity over time, even with constant exposure to sunlight. EVA foam is also relatively easy to clean and doesn’t require the same level of upkeep as wood or other materials.
It comes in a variety of colors and patterns and you can choose what best fits your look.
I thought it was something I wouldn’t be able to add for some time, but, it is available online and it really does combines safety, comfort, durability, low maintenance, and style-truly a smart upgrade for any boat owner.
Adding EVA foam boat decking to your boat involves a few careful steps to ensure a successful installation. The process typically begins with thorough preparation. You’ll want to clean the surface of the deck to remove any dirt, grime, or old adhesive. A good cleaning solution can help, but be sure to rinse and dry the area completely afterward. This ensures a proper bond when the EVA foam is applied.
Next, you should measure the areas where you plan to install the foam. Precision is key here; accurate measurements will help you cut the foam to the right dimensions. It’s a good idea to use a template or pattern to ensure the pieces fit well, especially if you’re working around obstacles like cleats or hatches.
Once you have your pieces cut, it’s time to apply the adhesive. I used cardboard at first, but later found that getting cheap plastic, or cellophane was great since you could see through it and mark the areas with a sharpie perfectly. Live & learn! 🙄 😂
Most EVA foam decking comes with a strong adhesive backing, but for added durability, you might want to use a marine-grade adhesive. Although the adhesive the foam brought was 3M, this is where the 3M spray comes in handy. It is the same stuff I used on the foam rulers. In areas, like corners or bends, I added some to make it extra durable. Apply it evenly across the surface where the foam will adhere, taking care to avoid excess that could ooze out.
After the adhesive is in place, carefully position the EVA foam onto the deck. It’s best to start from one end and work your way to the other, ensuring no air bubbles form underneath. Press down firmly as you go to create a solid bond.
Finally, allow the adhesive to cure according to the manufacturer’s instructions. This step is crucial, as it ensures that the foam will stay in place even under the stresses of boating. Once cured, your boat will not only look great but will also be safer and more comfortable. Overall, while adding EVA foam decking requires some preparation and care, the results can significantly enhance your boating experience. Once I was done I added a bead of 5200 silicone all around to create a permanent bond. I know it is overkill, but I want this to last. It is by no means perfect and if I have to do it again I know now how to cut precisely and make it look absolutely professional. Take your time and you will be very happy with the results. Thanks for watching! I will be adding all the final build videos soon, feel free to ask any questions-wishing you the best! 1💙

    Thank you for the video. The information that Minnkota puts online does not show this as a lift assist. The wire you attached to the coiled spring made it simple to install. Minnkota says you need a special tool to install that. It looks like a simple wire like you used will do it. Thanks

    Friend, I just watched your video, and you did a great job. Only thing I would suggest is never take it apart. I have had to replace my collar several times because they are brittle, and I always remove the head and then just slide the shaft out after removing the collar below that holds the spring assist to the shaft head. And yes, that spiring assist is a life saver. anyone that knows how heavy that motor is would agree.... Great job though!!!

    Hi. Regarding our recent chat about bail-less Centaure reels, I've seen quite a few sawed-off conversions, but this one looks like it could be the real deal, as the bail swing mechanism appears to be absent. I'm inclined to think that a sawed off might not ber that efficient as the roller end of the arm is very tight to the spool in the closed position. What do yo think? Regards. Raymondo.

    • @awhaletale
      @awhaletale 4 місяці тому

      Hi Raymondo, That would be awesome if it is the real deal. I personally haven't seen one but would imagine there may be some out there. Hi again. Centaures are beautiful reels, and according to some old advertising sheets I've seen on line, they were also available bail-less. I've not seen one, not a real one anyway, but what do you think a bail-less conversion would turn out like? I'm asking because I do love occasionally fishing my vintage reels, but am a bail-less convert and there's no going back now. Raymondo. Ps. I also like the Spanish 'Sagarra' reels. Do you know of them?

    • @awhaletale
      @awhaletale 5 місяців тому

      The Centaurs have an amazing shape. I agree, they look awesome and they remind me of the Van Staal. I had no idea they made them bail-less. I have only seen them in half-bail. I think a conversion would look and function great. The Luxor I am working on now was missing the bail, it had been cut off and sealed, so I will be making that bail-less. Most of my reels now are either half-bail or bail-less. I started fishing with yoyos when I was a kid and they remind me of that style of fishing where you have more control of the line. I missed a Sagarra in an auction once, they are really nice-- I do have a bail-less AMSA Super Casting Spanish reel I have not been able to find any information on, but it is in beautiful shape, one of my favorites, and I probably won't be refinishing that one, but I will share it when I take it out fishing. As far as converting, I always think you should do things the way you like them, if it works for you, go for it--it's all that matters. Thanks again, Best Wishes!

    I saw from the description that you are aware that anodizing can be stripped with sodium hydroxide, so I'm surprised you went with mechanical removal instead. Sodium hydroxide would have stripped the finish in a minute or two, even in all the little nooks and crannies, while barely affecting the underlying aluminum.

    • @awhaletale
      @awhaletale 6 місяців тому

      Thank you for watching. You are 100% correct. The chemical removal would have been much easier and quicker. The reason I chose this route was because the reel with its age had lots of scrapes, nicks, and scratches, as well as many imperfections from mold that I figured would show if I didn't take it to a smooth finish by buffing when I gave it the final polish. By sanding the whole reel with the buffing discs as was able to see as went along how smooth it was becoming due to color difference between the sanded parts and anodized. But again, you are right. If it were a cleaner reel, your method would have been the way to go. Thanks for the info, I appreciate it. 👍 Best Wishes

      Thank you for watching. I'm sorry it didn't work for you. I'm not sure what could have gone wrong. As you can see from the video, it worked fine in my application and has as well for others. Maybe the coating on the wires you are stripping is different. Best Wishes

    I'm so glad I found this video. You idea is brilliant. I am dealing with the same problem: Delamination on my runabout floor. Water is between the layers, so I figured I'd have to cut out the bad, dry everything, then re-lay a traditional fiber and resin combo. I was JUST about to order the glass and resin when I ran across your video. If it works for me, it'll not only save me money, it'll save me a lot of time and hard work! PS Love the blue tape idea. And drilling the Glue applicator!

      Thanks for watching, I'm really glad you found it helpful. The gorilla glue forms a foam when exposed to the moisture that is rock solid and waterproof. If you do a section and find the section next to it is soft, just keep applying blue tape and drilling and filling that new section. Patching those small holes is a breeze, and it becomes super strong. Just make sure you use the classic gorilla original glue. Thanks again for your comments. I really appreciate it. Best Wishes
