Hi-Gear Vanguard Nightfall 6 Tent - Ready To Take On The British Summer
Great video. Several seasons.
Brilliant video, thank you. I’m grateful that you highlighted the obstacles that are put in our way. As a disabled cyclist who is forced to ride a heavy e bike I share your pain. Our government likes to talk big about being ‘green’ but at the end of the day they just hate cyclists.
The barriers are such a shame and a big source of frustration, hopefully the council will wise up and remove them but I’m not holding out much hope. Thanks for watching!
As you said, a gem of a ride and a gem of a video. Subbed.
Really is an amazing area, got another ride planned in the valley when the weather warms up! Thanks for watching and for the sub!
just got a tent today from go out doors was told poles was better for strength
There is such a large variety of tents out there this may be the case for the tent you have. Thanks is for watching!
Why oh why don’t they carry out some repair and make the canal path usable after all they make enough money out of canal boats , seems to me they are just not bothered. I’ve rode it for years and they don’t bother improving it , yet if you go on there site they say they want people to enjoy as long as they don’t have to spend there profits.
This had some of the worst towpaths sections I’ve ever come across, such a shame as it would be a great route to cycle, not just to Gnosal but the whole length. Thanks for watching!
I like the idea of going along the canal but I do not enjoy tarmac, I like a more natural path I don’t necessarily mean Graeme and mud just a more natural surface like the small stones.
I do like a nice gravel surface too, feels much like you are out in nature. Thanks for watching!
Worth noting air tents do not break on wind or someone falling in to it. Some air tents are lighter than their pole counterparts, it varies.
Yes definitely worth noting, I’ve tried to compare similar tents on this video but there is such a large range. Thanks for watching!
Not so keen on some parts of the ride ?
I enjoyed it all but there were some very busy sections with it being a sunny Saturday meaning we had to dismount. Thanks for watching!
I have a vw golf, how much boot space would this take ?
It would fit in the boot, but you wouldn’t have much space left for anything else. Thanks for watching!
@@cyclingn8I bought it!! got quite a lot of space left to be fair, including the under sheet and carpet, double mattresses, chairs, stil got room for more🎉
Hi have you got this route on strava thanks?
Here it is strava.app.link/PoL82bA5zQb thanks for watching!
47:34 an Audi quattro I believe
It was a rally car but not the Audi. It was Lancia Delta. Thanks for watching!
Brilliant - thanks. Done all that in bits on various rides - but never in one loop. Will be great to pass the time on the turbo.
Glad it will come in handy for the turbo and thank you for watching!
Did the porch come with the tent or did you have to buy separately?
The porch is built into the tent, so much better than a separate porch. Thanks for watching!
I first rode the Manifold almost 30 years ago and between the High Peak, Tissington and Manifold trails, it still remains the most lumpiest and jarring of the three :)
It is pretty bumpy in parts, it’s been tarmaced but tree routes and poor maintenance have taken their toll. Thanks for watching!
I'll be the annoying one to say "First"
Thanks for watching!
Oh dear …. Your welsh pronunciation is not good 😮😅….. it’s pronounced Berry you …. Welll that’s as close is I can write it .. Newtown is my home town , so I know your route well (now living near Stafford) ….. it’s a nice challenge ride both ways in one ride .. 200km
My Welsh pronunciation is awful, but so is my pronunciation of many English places, I will try to do better! Quite a trek from Stafford, but a nice route. Thanks for watching!
Well done buddy you smashed it
Thank you! And thanks for watching!
excellent vidéo, thanks for shqring your knowledge
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it and thanks for watching!
After watching you videos make me feel more confident in doing longer and better rides also what camera do you use please thanks :)
Glad they give you confidence to ride a little longer and explore. I use a go pro hero 5 and my iPhone for filming, but thinking about upgrading the go pro soon as it’s getting old now. Thanks for watching!
Ive done similar joining at Ladywood then through Netherton tunnel out to Kinver then up the Staffs to Wolves then back to Bham on the mainline....clocked it at 43 miles. This was brfore most towpaths had been upgraded with decent surfaces so today it would make for greater progress. Wouldnt fancy the tunnel again though.
The Netherton tunnel is quite the experience, and I love the staff and Worcester canal, check out my Black Country loop video if you haven’t already, think you would like it. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for posting this, it was nicely interesting and informative. I spent a few days cycling around the Birmingham canals and wish I'd seen this first. A good excuse to go again.
Glad you enjoyed the video, this one is a great loop and would be worth the trip. Thanks for watching!
What is the carpet called that you used ??? I just bought this tent but can’t find the carpet for it
It’s this one www.gooutdoors.co.uk/15984366/hi-gear-hampton-8-deluxe-carpet-15984366
I've cycled on the tow path's off the black country, and Birmingham, for many years, I've been attacked by geese on occasions, and on frosty days, the block paving on the bridge's, and other places can be very slippery on two wheels 😅,I'm amazed that section in Smethwick is still closed, enjoyed the video,🚴🚴
There were definitely some dodgy sections on the route with it being so cold! It’s a real shame about the towpath closure at Smethwick, literally been closed for years now. Thanks for watching!
Cheers for the video, came across it by chance and have saved the komoot route. Will definitely be making the trip down to ride this loop!
Glad you like the video, it’s a nice loop. Thanks for watching!
I like the video but why mention a second rate comedian born in Dudley when there os a statue of a first rate footballer,Duncan Edwards in the middle of the town.
There was a few famous Dudley’ites I could have mentioned but thought Lenny was the most well known. Glad you liked the video and thanks for watching!
wow! lookin forward to this!
Its a great route! Thanks for watching!
Nice ride I would probably lose my balance and fall into the water
At least you can take the virtual journey by watching!
at 8:15 you can make out the old boat launches sloping into the canal. There was a huge iron works at that end of the tunnel. The furnace was right over the tunnel and was running 24/7 - if you boat through the tunnel you will see discoloured, cracked bricks in the soffit - damage caused by the heat of the furnace running above for years. They had three shifts and employed a couple of thousand people I've heard (during it's heyday). They used to make their own 'butties' - barges for transporting what they produced... hence the boat launches (they were fabricated at the edge of the canal and pushed in).
Thank you for the extra info, so much history on the area! Thanks for watching!
That’s brilliant! Great video and route.
Glad you liked it! Thanks for watching!
One more thing, if you do this ride anticlockwise, surely you don't need to hit that ridiculously steep hill, instead go down it instead?! 🙃
You would avoid the steep hill up to wrens nest but then it would be a long climb heading up there, so depends which you prefer!
What is the model of your Garmin sat nav? Also, where you stopped in Birmingham Gas Street Basin, that Italian restaurant/cafe to the left, sells the best focaccia sandwiches in Birmingham centre!
I have a pretty old Garmin, it an edge touring but it does the job for me. Will have to check out that place, thanks for the tip and thanks for watching!
Great video as ever. Really must do some part of this in the next few weeks, Thanks for sharing and inspiring.
Glad it was inspiring! Thanks for watching!
With a air tent tou depend of a little machine (it can fail) Then i don´t trust in it. I prefer the old school.
I prefer poles, easy to see a broken pole and fix it! Thanks for watching!
Great video and lovely little tour
Thank you, and thanks for watching!
A rather interesting journey. I used to cyvle on the disused Grantham canal and thd disused railwsy line at Belvoir.😊 The drift track up there near saltby, had beautiful wildflowers!😊
Disused railways and canals for some great cycling!
The name 'Underhill', was also the pseudonymn for Mr. Frodo Baggins! Of "Lord of the Rings" fame!!😊
Ahh yes it was indeed, thanks for watching!
@@cyclingn8 That's okay. I've watched quite a few of your posts!
13:27 - Is this your way of telling us you're starting a career in comedy? 🙃
Move over Peter Kay lol thanks for watching!
Enjoyed your ride, have you ever cycled down the track next to the tram line. Smethwick to Wednesbury 5 mins ride from Birmingham main line canal.
Glad you enjoyed it. Never cycled that track, will have to check it out. Thanks for watching!
Before the bridge by Blowers Green Pumphouse, I used to have to carry my bike over the lock
That’s sounds like it could be a bit hairy! Thanks for watching!
I've been looking at this tent, but in the spec says no uv protection?
No I seeing nothing in the spec about UV protection, not something I have thought about before to be honest. Thanks for watching!
If you go down bournebrook, there is a cycle path through the city hospital grounds, where you can get onto the canal from the university station. It cuts out some time, and interfaces with traffic, if commuting or trying to keep time. Not a very exciting explore though!
I did consider that way as it is easier and quicker bit the canal need on me wanted to see where the Dudley 2 canal met the Brum to Worcester. Thanks for watching!
Another great video! Most enjoyable. Some serious climbing there too!
Yeah I couple of hills in this one when avoiding the tunnels, definitely got the legs burning! Thanks for watching!
Love the vid. Vut its gorsty. Gore-stee Lapal is not La-Pal, its lap-al (like apple)
Glad you liked the video and thank you for the pronunciation tips, I will remember those in future. Thanks for watching!
Very interesting, looks like a really good ride, perfect for cycling canal nerds ( like me and you!) thank you
Glad you liked it and share my nerdy interest in canals! Thanks for watching!
It's a shame you didn't take a right as you left Woodgate and went about 30 MTRS past the roundabout on to Barnes Hill. There's a plaque on the side of the road that shows where the Laple canal tunnel exited.
I didn’t know that was there, thanks for the info I will check it out. Thanks for watching!
Its on the same side of the road as ASDA, a little under half wat between the two roudabouts
Think I have told you this before but your knowledge is fantastic makes your videos interesting.
Thank you! I rely on google a fair bit for the info but I find it all very interesting, so glad you do too. Thanks for watching!
I definitely need to try this route!
It’s a good one! Thanks for watching!
Nice one Nate, you did part of my cycle home from lye up to the river rea route. Certainly are some hills! I now now more about what im actually riding past now
Glad I could shed some light on some of the areas history, thanks for watching!
The towpath of the Old Main Line in Smethwick is indeed usually a quagmire; I always take Mr Telford's route on the bike and Mr Brindley's when on foot. Thanks for the route - I'll give it a go very soon.
I think I would use Mr Telford’s route to Spon lane if I did it again, but it was interesting to ride a section of canal I haven’t before. Thanks for watching!
@@keithphillips7320 agreed - I've never been on the Old Main Line and experienced a non-boggy towpath and pretty well take the New Main Line nowadays unless I feel masochistic!
Think I got lucky with it being frozen! Thanks for watching!
Thanks for sharing your wonderful trip very interesting 😊
You’re welcome, glad you found it interesting. Thanks for watching!
