Games I Want You To Play - Episode 1
thank you for the review, made me actually purchase =)
@@gustavnilsson14 I hope you enjoy it, it's a fantastic game!
Take "pillars of eternity" for example (try it out if you didnt.. game is PERFECT).. devs made the game with pause.. and after some time players asked to implement TURN BASED to it.. so that is sadly how bad ppl see RTWP games =(
Every time I have to go ahead and leave Yorda alone for a moment, I take an extra second to see if she's safe; and while I'm gone, I'm busting my hind end to get back to her as quickly as possible. She's the first (and to this date, the only) NPC escort I actually care about. She's this really important character and I feel like she's in my personal care.
Never played? Ico was a cult classic during the PS2 years. It even had a review on Toonami. Naturally, a lot of younger gamers, like gen Z or Alpha, haven't played it or even heard of it in modern discourse, because it's stuck on PS3 if you're not a PC gamer who enjoys emulation. It's short, and it's accessibility is limited in this console gen. That could change at some point in the near future, imo likely once Fumito Ueda and the rest of GenDesign debut with their first in-house release since Ueda's and the other Team Ico veteran's departure from Sony.
Anyone know if it's possible to play the game on win 10 without emulators?
I didn't have to install any sort of emulator! It all just seemed to work!
I play sky and i hear a lot of people compare mentione this game ... i see why.... and makes alot of sense as a sky player
It's the same developers! This was their first truly big hit!
The artstyle of dredge is what drew me to it when i saw one of the people i'm subbed to playing it. There's something about the artstyle that makes the game good to look at and it has it's own charm to it.
I found it a bit too easy. But then I'm a grammar nerd and would have loved more word order, flexion, tenses, etc.
I did play this actually, and loved it, way before it was cool but I am happy it is finally getting the attention it deserves
hmm I watched the 1st minute and I feel like I should go in blind
The video is very much spoiler free, but that's probably still a good idea! Have you played it?
Thankfully i have played it. Great game.
Cute Poly Dino Blobs are the reason I bought it!
Just saw on Twitter that a company called Selecta Play International announced a limited 5th anniversary edition release of this game. Physical disc, manual, steelbook, double CD soundtrack, etc.
I was listening to the soundtracks from the Peter McConnell games and that's how I came across this game and your amazing video. and It's an incredible coincidence because I literally just finished the game Humanity, which have the same mechanic as this game and is almost identical in a lot of ways, although a much simpler when compare to Pit Droids : )
I was genuinely surprised by how good the soundtrack to this game was! I definitely didn't remember that from playing it many years ago. Any other standout soundtracks of his? I still haven't played Humanity but I do have it on a list! It looks pretty interesting.
@@Table53 his music from Voodoo Detective is surprisingly good too : )
A review on Steam called this game _Chip's Awakening_ and I'm disappointed I didn't make that joke
1:11:46 for some reason this song choice made me chuckle lol
I can't find the air god(?) where is it ahhhhh
All I'll say is it's definitely on the air island! So maybe check if there's somewhere you haven't been?
@@Table53 I found it! I also learnt I'm really good at overthinking things and missed the obvious answer to the puzzle about 8 times
@moomooheadme8843 that's easily done! Glad you found it!
while the name change wasn't doing it for me, the fact that the game kickstarted with a rock-solid vertical slice demo and managed to stick the landing all these years later is a testament to Cicada Game's design chops.
I respect the name change but it definitely isn't quite as catchy as before. Yeah it's a really solid design!
There is exactly one game I've seen that comes close to this game's vibe: Power Soukobon. Problem is, it was a Japan exclusive for the SNES. And even then, this one is a lot more... realized?... than that. There, each room is a single puzzle, character progression is just you getting more health/power for the boss fights, and said fights aren't themselves puzzles... but here? A screen can have several puzzles, and character progression grants new abilities.
Great review, convinced me to buy this game. :) And what a pleasant surprise to find this channel. I'm looking through some old videos and coming across a lot of interesting recommendations. I've already subscribe to follow your excellent work.
I hope you enjoy it! Thank you, fingers crossed there are some either more niche games on here that you'll find interesting too!
FANTASTIC video. In ALL caps. Thank you. subscribed!
I really hope the ALL CAPS is a reference to my MF DOOM reference - but thank you either way haha!
I am pleasantly surprised every time I see a Table53 video on my subs page. Even if the game isn't from a genre I'd usually consider my cup of tea, I know it will be worth checking out because of your exceptional taste in quality games. Thanks for another great recommendation!
Thank you! That's great to hear! Yeah I need to make sure the next video isn't a sokoban game, I think I've reviewed plenty of them for the time being haha
Ive played the demo like 5 times, im 100% buying this.
If you enjoyed the demo you won't be disappointed!
Babe wake up - New Table53 video just dropped
Haha, I'm fully on board with you commenting this every time I get around to writing a video!
If there was ever a game to get a new video out of you I knew this would be it.
Of course! I wasn't going to miss this one!

It's been a hell of a wait.
Wow. I recently played and loved Oracle of Ages for the first time. For puzzle fans, I would say it is the best Zelda game out there. I must play this. Hopefully it makes it to Switch. Otherwise Isles may motivate me to get Steamdeck. Big respect to your channel. Extremely high quality, thoughtful analysis. I'm getting a great kick out of Youropa right now, a game I had not heard of until I saw your video.
I think it is going to get a Switch release, but not for a while yet! Thank you! I'm glad someone else is playing Youropa, that is a criminally underappreciated game!
I remember Chip's Challenge well, in fact
Haha, well I hope I haven't caused any offence! It's a very easy game to make a joke from
@@Table53 I played it because it was a game that came installed on some PCs at the time, but I've never seen it since.
I've been waiting for this game for _four years_ ..
It's been 47 years.... The return of the king
Haha, thank you! Time to disappear for another 47 years now
You convinced me to play this, looks gorgeous.
It's superb, I hope you enjoy it!
I've been really anticipating this for the last few months. So, your glowing review really makes me happy. The indie puzzle genre as a whole is where I believe devs are able to best express their creativity and really leverage the medium's strengths. I'd be picking this up today itself and hope I like it as much as you do! ^^
I've been anticipating it since 2019 haha! So I'm equally glad that the finished game was this good!
The first time I played ICO, I too instinctively made the leap of faith back to Yorda and the castle, but I ended up dying on the lonesome section. On replay, just out of curiosity, I decided to go the other way just to see what the path not taken was. Turns out, you CAN cross to the other side of the divide between land and the castle... but the way to freedom is blocked, ironically, by a totem gate. Without Yorda to open it for you, and since you don't have the sword either, you have no choice but to stand there at the door to freedom as the other side of the drawbridge continues to retract into the ground... until at long last it retracts under your feet and you plunge into the water below, but without the benefit of going on to the lonesome section. The irony is, abandoning Yorda only ends up reinforcing her necessity, and giving you a healthy bit of reinforcement by killing you outright.
I've done the same thing too! Not sure if I mentioned it in the video, but I also explored what happens if you run the other way and found the totem door. It's a really clever way of reminding players about Yorda's importance without directly having to tell them!
@@Table53 You didn't, but I don't think it's important enough to mention. The drawbridge is just long enough to make the mistake of abandonment memorable. It retracts slowly enough that you have enough time to test and see if there's a way to get past the totem gate to get to freedom, but there isn't, because the gate protrudes just far enough out that there's no way you can climb around it.
This video used to pop up on my initial screen from time to time and I kinda avoided it, because something told me I'd hear something bad about it and feel upset. But I don't think there's much to say about Ico in that regard. I'm glad to finally watch it and find such a deep and loving analysis for one of the most beautiful games ever made.
Well I'm glad you finally took the chance on it! Ico is something truly special, I could never speak badly of it!
2:07 More like DIO from Jojo as Sakuya(the person you play as) has the power to manipulate time
I know what I’m gonna say is considered sacrilege, but I actually prefer Ico to Shadow of the Colossus. Don’t get me wrong, SotC has some of the greatest boss battles in all of video game history and is still achingly beautiful, but I’ve always preferred the quieter and meditative atmosphere and fairy tale feeling of Ico. For me, it just resonates more. As for The Last Guardian, I definitely place it next to Ico for how it takes the companionship of Ico but applies the epic scope and scale of SotC to it while also building on the relationship aspect.
That's completely fair! I do prefer Shadow of the Colossus, I think it's the better game overall, but I do also find Ico far more interesting in a lot of ways. Luckily the existence of one doesn't diminish the effect of the other!
How does this game play if you have color vision issues? Not fully color blind but lets say its a challenge.
Hey, I don't remember seeing any colourblind accessibility options - although I've also done a cursory google search and one of the devs said on steam that they are colourblind and tried to get around the problem by always including a text description of colour where relevant, but I can't guarantee 100% that it won't be an issue!
@@Table53 it looks interesting I'll give it a try but I'm pretty sure it'll add a little extra challenge.
Just finished my first playthrough of Ico. Bought a used PS3, then bought and downloaded Ico from playstation store. Wanted to play this game before the hardware became too hard to find. Didn't know it was available to play on newer hardware than PS3. Had to wait until I finished it before watching your video. I wouldn't have wanted to have any of the story spoiled. Alternate interpretations of the ending have been bugging me for a few hours. My interpretation was basically the same as yours. In the absence of much else to suggest otherwise, I'll just believe what I see - Ico has washed up on some beach, perhaps a bit further west or east of the sunken castle, and Yorda found the strength to swim after him after the castle had sunk a bit more.
This video was exactly what I'd hope to find when I suddenly remembered this game existed. Perfectly satisfied my nostalgia!
You are the exact target audience for the video haha!
I did actually play this when I was a kid. I lost Yorda but the game never ended and I was softlocked within the first two hours of gameplay. It's kind of weird, but I felt like that singular softlock defined the game for me, the loneliness that is a hallmark of the game, balanced by the presence of Yorda, had become horrifyingly oppressive. I remember I was playing with my dad, and he eventually got tired and left and I was left alone with ICo. To this day I still don't think I've ever felt more immersed by a videogame. It was a weird experience, but if I could be honest, it's not one I'd mind reliving.
Do you remember how you lost Yorda? That sounds like an interesting softlock and I wonder if it could be recreated.
that thumbnails a load-a-crap.
Due to my lack of artistic ability or is this an "actually I played it!" comment?
this reminds me of the "Mirrormask (2005)" movie. i luv it
I'd never heard of that before but from the few images I've seen that is one trippy looking film!
I’m unpatiently waiting for your SOTC and Last G video.
I Watched this video & hoped to find a SOTC review as well 💔
This game deserves a remaster at the least, and ideally a Bluepoint remake.
100% agree. A Bluepoint remake would be incredible, I just don't think Ico has the commercial firepower to demand that sort of attention unfortunately
Anyone here tried the mobile Version? Any differences, how is the handling?
I'm in the middle of playing this game now, and loved your video! I have a bachelor's degree in Linguistics, and am really enjoying Heaven's Vault so far. I picked up on the grammatical markers in the language fairly quickly and was really pleased when I noticed it had them so I could narrow down some of my options for translations more easily. I find myself scouring every single area I visit for every scrap of Ancient before I leave, just because I want to translate more and more Ancient! I played Chants of Sennar last year and loved that, so I was over the moon when I discovered HV existed!
Now im interested in playing this game after playing shadow of the colossus and the last guardian recently 😊❤
You should! It's a wonderful game!
Thank you for the amazing review! Even I haven't played the game I felt it through this review. The game is really heart touching.
Thank you! I'm glad the video works for people who haven't played the game as well!
Great review but it's not a one button game like you mentioned a couple of times. There's a dash, with a dedicated dash button. You need it to beat the game. Very fun and creative game!
Are you sure there's two buttons? It's been long enough that I can't remember with certainty, but I don't remember a dash and I've just found a tweet for the developer saying "uses only one button" What is the dash used for?

My bad, it's Qomp2....
@martindion4846 ah okay, that makes more sense! But thanks for the reminder that qomp2 has released, I'd completely forgotten about it!
I’m currently replaying this game from the original disk I had as a kid and I noticed something really intriguing at 9:10 of your video. You demonstrate a really easy puzzle that I don’t remember being that easy. It turns out because I was playing on medium difficulty the colors of the gates weren’t so straightforward and you had more arrows to compensate for the more complex solution. I thought difficulty would just change simple factors like whether the droids crash or their spacing but it seems every puzzle probably has alt versions for each difficulty.
Oh wow.. my initial guess is that there might be two separate puzzles with the same base design but slightly more complicated colours? Thats definitely true with the "chasm" puzzles with all the colour arrows on the floor! Possibly a select few puzzles (where the droids can't crash) use random colours? That would be a pretty neat feature! I doubt the spacing of droids ever changes though, I reckon that's too integral to some of the designs to change without making a puzzle impossible. I'm impressed that you managed to spot this haha
@@Table53 I wouldn't think randomly generated colors would be a game feature because they would each need to be tested to actually have a solution. But I think your first guess is right. Same base design, but level designers manually changed the colors of gates/arrows as well as how many arrows they provide to you to easily make harder and easier solutions. Also makes sense that the spacing never changes. I only spotted it because I'm currently replaying the game and had just done that level a few days ago. It stuck out to me because it was one that I vividly remember from childhood.
@FloStudios yeah that's true. I have actually played a couple of puzzle games that can "procedurally generate" new solvable puzzles - but that seems unlikely here haha. Yeah, the only question now is whether the variations are explicitly listed as different puzzles in the game, or if each listed puzzle can change a bit!
