Air Layer Propagation (Marcotting)

Nothing revolutionary. Just my preferred technique for air layering. I didn’t come up with this method but I have tried many different ways and this is the one I like the most.
Chocolate covered figs and blackberries

Fun with chocolate I haven’t made chocolate covered blackberries in years but they are one of my all time favorite treats. These are just superb. This variety is Prime Ark Freedom and I used 70% chocolate from Chuao, Venezuela. I make the chocolate myself, from cocoa beans. The figs are assorted varieties, partially dried figs that are still soft and juicy! YUMMY!!!!!

Managing Variegated Fig Trees - Keep Your Tiger From Losing Its Stripes
Have you published your list of ones you're keeping, the ones that made the cull? The ones that stand out for you.
I haven't published that yet. I need a little more time here in TN to see which ones will be kept. I should be pretty much done evaluating next year.
what is the planting distance of you fig farm
Perfect timing! I have 150 new fig trees in ground. This is exactly what I am doing for winter protection. So great confirmation for what I am also doing.
Does he have a channel? Would love to see more of this
i'm jealous
Great looking figs What zone?
That video was when I lived in Santa Barbara. 10a
@@figsandchocolate5553 Oh man-good for you! Hard to beat area-we’re in a 6b to 7a zone
When I was stationed in Turkey in the early 2000, I would go to the local open market and buy large black figs. I think they called them Anatolian black figs. Have you or anyone who follows you ever heard of them and if so, how can I order a cutting? Any help would be appreciated. Keep up the good work with your videos!
I am not familiar with a specific one with that name but one of the most popular figs over there is called Bursa Siyahi and it is an excellent black fig but it requires the fig wasp to ripen
@@figsandchocolate5553 Thanks for your response, I really appreciate it. Do you have any recommendations for anything similar? I live in Yakima valley of central Washington.
@@mcervantes824 I am not sure. I have heard good things about Ischia Black. Check out Oregon Figs. He has some excellent videos and you might find something for your area.
When you say caprified, do you mean pollinated?
Yes
No Black Madeira KK?
I didn't have any ripe at that time but it is the same. I have ripened hundreds of each of these and the only one that stands out as unique is Madeira Island Black. Very similar but it has always been larger and has more honey
G
Do you have cuttings for sell?
Unfortunately, I do not. Most of these are available from figbid though
Harvey and his farm is the GOAT!
Good golly man, have you got it going on.😊😂 I've got 12 in ground, central oklahoma. 👍👍
My lot in Louisiana was a hill that was bulldozed flat down to hard concrete-like red iron clay mixed with hard gravel. I started with rooted fig cuttings, dug tiny holes with a miner`s pick and put the cuttings in, added a little compost from my vegetable garden, then over time/years I put down layers of cardboard, green grass clippings, chopped leaves, rotting branches, and sandy/silty soil from a wash in the woods until the trees are growing in mounds beneath the canopy. I pee around the trees occasionally too.
Nice 😊
Good 😊
Awesome!
Lucky!
I have this huge independent caprifig in my land and its a edible wild one that hold three crops but i want to get rid of it i kepp pruning it every year but it comes shooting up from the ground like weed. Do you perhaps by any chance know a good way to kill a fig tree its roots and everything above???
@@ai-pq4yq That can be tough with wild ones. You will have to make sure and remove it below soil level and hope you kill any dormant buds. There are also sprays that you could use on the tree when it’s actively growing that are systemic and carry the poison into the roots. What color is the ripe fig? Do you still have the fig wasp on the tree each year?
@@figsandchocolate5553 The profichi crop when almost ripe is a really dark glossy red like the exact color of blood but deeper and then it turns to a really dark glossy black but some part of the crop stays a dark red, when ripe it is moist on the inside and has a good sweet taste and a old coffee after taste and when you open the profichi crop and shake it the pollen comes out like it's snowing it has lots of pollen. The mammoni which is on the tree as I write this starts out as a small black bead then swells and ripens , when it is ripe it's a very black color and very moist abd with literally thousands of seeds inside it. The size is very big and it is the same as eating a normal fig very sweet and crunchy with a bland interior it's just white on the inside but it has this weird coffee after taste that I do not mind. I would really love to get rid of this tree (do not worry I have it in a pot too) it's destroying my yard and land and if I am gone it can become as big as my house. I live in the Levant so the fig wasp is in its native habitat it is always here and it's everywhere, there are many wild fig trees here some taste incredible but some taste like moist cardboard.
👍
So where is his Bird Scaring device ? We are used to those screams in the background 😅
That was so rough! I am careful and dig down to save the roots. Easy peasy propagating. I do this a lot
@@amessnger Whatever works for you. I’m not a patient man. 😂
I fully understand that. 🤣
Figs are easy to grow. No need to air layer. Take a few cuttings and stick it in a pot, you will see it root.
@@darianmu7114 Yeah. Rooting cuttings is also quite easy but air layers are stronger and grow a lot faster. In 6 weeks, cuttings are mediocre but with air layers, in 6 weeks, you could have a nice well rooted 3-4’ tree ready to be up potted to a 15g pot. I enjoy both methods. I have about 800 cuttings that I started rooting just a couple weeks ago
Wow, I am so jealous!!!
Wow that’s an amazing collection I have 17 different figs myself so far
Very delicious food better than rice❤❤
Hey man, love the vid and id like like to start air layering my mission fig tree but i live in las vegas where we currently are in a heat wave of 100+ degrees. My question is should i wait a few weeks until the temp drops around 90 degrees because im worried its just too damn hot, I've heard the roots grow best around 75-78 degrees. What are your thoughts on this?✌️
@@joshuaphilbert7995 Roots do better at higher temps than 70’s. Honestly, you’re probably fine as long as you wrap it in aluminum foil. That will keep the temps down. I had regular 90-95 weather for a few weeks while these were set and they did fine
@@figsandchocolate5553thank you, I'm going to try next week when this heat wave is gone💪
Bill! Your trees are gorgeous. Thank you Eric for posting this tour. So much fun to see!
Beautiful! I used the same method. I did an extra step and added rooting hormone to the cut bottom and sprinkled mychorhiza on the roots. I thought that couldn't hurt. I live in the desert and thought they might dry too quick so I made some extra wet when setting them up. That was a mistake. They were the ones that didn't root. I then trimmed off a lot of the bottom leaves, potted them up and and set them in the shade on the north side of the house. I made a sprinkling bottle out of an old water bottle and sprinkle morning and afternoon with a mild fish emulsion solution taking care not to overly water the soil but just the leaves. They're looking great. Now I have to figure out how to get 60 air layers in gallon pots thought the winter. Ha! I will continue air layering, but will still do some cuttings in the winter just to have something to do during those dark cold days of January and February.. I also had good luck this spring by thinning suckers from my ground trees. I hate wasting the pullings so I experimented with filling a 5 gal pot about 1/4 with moist peat Moss. I then pulled several from each variety and trimmed bottom leaves and with sissors, cut back the top leaves in half and dipped them in hormone and stuck them in the pot, one variety to each pot. I then covered the pot with one of those clear domes made from one of those clear plastic bowls from the dollar tree and set them in strong indirect light. If I didn't see condensation after a few days, I would sprinkle them with my bottle. They did great. I call them pullings because rather than cutting them, I pulled them so they would have the heel from the older wood attached. Sorry for the lengthy response. I lived your video.
Thanks
instead of folding like a taco you can pinch the cut part of the bag and pull it towards you and the roots can grow all the way around and easier to take the bag off if that make since.
@@matthewking2209 I do that, a little. I should try to make it more open. I didn’t think about how much easier it would be to remove.
Very happy to call Bill a great friend. When we get on the phone, it is almost impossible to end our conversation. I have learned so much from him. His practices and respect for nature are so refreshing! I look forward to his care package of pawpaws every year. He has been teaching me how to grow pawpaws as well. If he was not Mr. Figs, he would be Mr. Pawpaws. 😂 Keep spreading peace guys. We need your combined positive energy now more than ever!
I've known Bill aka Mr. Fig for years. He is a great guy, and truly enjoys his garden and sharing. Great video!
Two cool dudes!
Looking great, Bill!!! That cardboard trick is what I'll be trying this year.
Looks like a great guy to spend the day with. Nice fig trees and he makes it look so easy.... Its not.... Maybe if I was 29 again...... Glad you had a good time and made a new friend.
It's my first year growing figs and I've tried this method of air layering and some aren't developing roots good in the bags. I'm being patient and just leaving them but not sure when the cutoff time is when they should be removed. They will need time to develop good roots to survive the winter.
Wondering if you ever fruited this tree ?
It ended up being a Caprifig
Great instructional video. The best part is not having to provide bottom heat to cuttings in the 9x7 pots. It also takes the guess work out of knowing if your cutting has rooted.
Amazing! Thanks for sharing.
Holy moly WOW!!! WHAT IS THAT. I imagine that is what my heaven looks like. No seriously though. I have heard Harvey's name so many time on these videos. And now you took me to his eden. TY for that. Is he on youtube? But seriously what is going on with all those fig trees?? He must sell them commercially huh? There were figs as far as the eye could see. Why is this video only a minute and change? What else is there? Why are you there LOLOL Sorry I'll stop. did you say those are caprified? You have the wasp in Tennessee? People are keeping them indoors in the winter? I am thinking about doing that.
Harvey is known as Figaholics. He has lots of videos of his individual varieties. He is one of the godfathers of the modern fig community and sells cuttings once a year. The best cuttings around. I was fortunate to be able to visit him. I’ve known him for several years. The video is short but I was there for around 5-6 hours. This is in Northern California and he has the fig wasp. I took a road trip to finding hunting and to visit friends and I made sure to time it so that I was there in prime fig season. 😊
@@figsandchocolate5553 oh very cool. And geez wow all those figs were frickin caprified huh. That is just insane. I would have eaten myself into sickness. My mind cant even fathom that many pollinated figs. crazy!!
Seriously incredible there. did you say he has seedlings? I must not understand well enough yet. I thought those needed to be pollinated by the wasp. What a great story about Mr Fig sending you all those cuttings. I can't wait till I can give stuff away. I have 50 first year trees this year. They have done exceptionally well. All but a few put out figs, and I was planning on almost zero figs from them. Some have 50 figs. Most have 20-30. But they are all first year, so I am super happy. I hear the taste will only improve with time, and I am already super happy with the taste, so let's go... What a great background story with you guys. That's what I'm all about. I need to get on our figs more often. I actually rarely use it. Just so much time in a day between work and kids. I squeeze in my few youtube videos. Thanks for the rocking videos...
@@edslim718 Hi. I’ll have to watch it and listen for that. He doesn’t have seedlings from his own trees. You are correct, that would require hand pollination or the fig wasp
@@figsandchocolate5553 Okay ty making sure I am keeping it together in my head
wow... thats not far from me.. thanks for sharing...i was told i need to talk to you about chocolate and the project im about to start...
@@troypriddyFNF I heard about that! Let’s talk soon. I have been in the chocolate world for almost 20 years
haha yeah for real; I had caprified figs from the fig hunter two days ago. My wife and I both went absolutely crazy. Just not right
@@edslim718 That has been a challenge since moving to TN. My caprifigs will finally be big enough, after the terrible freeze my first winter, to have plenty of pollen for hand pollination next year. I’ll be back in business!!!
@@figsandchocolate5553 I definitely want to do hand pollination. I already have the mixer and right sized syringes (I think). I even bought a Pastilleire unknown that requires pollination so I can play around with it. I never got around to it (mostly because I couldnt buy a capri fig + you know time). Then to my surprise, after dropping ~15 figs, there were two absolutely beautiful figs ripened to perfection. Dripping on the inside dark red and so good. 30 on my brix reader. I dont think we have a wasp here, but I seriously want to breed them. And I dont know how to explain this. This fig needs pollination....
What a wonderful way to treat a friend. What are the best caprifig trees to use? We'll be waiting on a video on the best way to caprify your figs🤩
@@AveryOCason Yanonali, Girsh and Saleeb are the ones I’ve mostly used in the last.
I agree with Bill 100%
Santa Barbra to Tennessee - some jump huh. Super helpful video. TY for sharing your clearly successful tips. I seriously want to (almost NEED to) know if those figs ripened.
Our family loved SB but me and my wife are both from TN and we wanted our kids to experience the slower life. :-)
