    I am mostly interested in straight natives because it’s important for the native bees that the native plants be straight natives and not cultivars….look up Rob Gegear for more info

    Thanks for making this video. I am a landscape designer, trying to get more familiar with designing native gardens in the north east US, so this was very informative. I just paused right at the part where you explain how you are using a loose symmetry in the design to compliment the natural style of this garden. I'm definitely going to use this more often, I avoid symmetrical designs typically, but there are many situations that call for it.

    I'm trying to get into this sort of thing in the UK! I assume you would leave a client with a maintenance plan and a timeline of what to expect before the design reaches its maturity (plants fill up the gaps). Is it expected to also check in on the design and stay in touch with the client for further advice? Is this something that you would charge for or is that included in the initial costs? Thanks :)

    This wins our Joe Knows Turf award The longest running turf grass trial shows ammonium sulfate produces the lowest weed pressure in grasses than any other management More data shows applying nitrogen improves soil microbial populations faster than any other method of management We will provide more context with sources Congrats!

    • @soilshepherds
      @soilshepherds 6 місяців тому

      Thank you. I appreciate The Grass Factor watching and commenting. Outside of compost, I haven’t had a need to try other methods for weed control and high amounts of nitrogen chase away organisms like earthworms. I’ll share that I created several test cases that look at soil tests and decisions we made along the way. I’ll be sure to share in a future video since this video seems to be getting more attention lately…

    • @mghemke
      @mghemke 4 місяці тому

      Read the soil Science @TheGrassFactor - Salt based fertilizers (like ammonium sulfate) kill or deter beneficial soil biology - worms, nemotodes, bacteria, fungus, etc... While it reduces weed pressure (temporarily!), it kills the soil life, reduces soil organic matter, and creates a dependence on continued application of chemicals to replace the function of the soil bacteria.

  • @NotGoddess
    @NotGoddess 7 місяців тому

    Congratulations on 1k subscribers! On the avatars -- honestly I like your original you. It's a face to connect with and instantly recognizable to me. But if you like another, go for it - I'm sure I'll form the same association with that one. On the fothergilla -- I'm in the Midwest, so it's far outside my eco-region, so I haven't watched it. But I do encourage you to keep making regional native plant videos -- there are a lot of sources for natives that are more widespread, but not as many good breakdowns for local natives. As your audience expands, that'll get more views. I love your design videos, because while you covered the design principals, you also did a lot of before/during/after photos. Many I see stop at the 'here's what it looks like after planting' then skip to 1-2 years later. Seeing those same-year transitions really help cement the principals behind the design. I also like your opportunities for improvement. One idea I might suggest to improve those again goes the regionality of native plants. While you use the beautiful pink muhly, again, it's nowhere near to my eco-region. In my case I have similar purple lovegrass (eragrostis spectabilis) I can use - harder to source, but similar characteristics. Offering a short list of alternatives along with each plant you use may help others. For future ideas -- I love your regenerative lawn/lawn alternative videos. Finding low-growing native grasses & non-sedge alternatives can be hard. There are lists but not as many real-life applications. Have you used wild strawberry (fragaria virginiana) before? That's one that grows in more regions and seems a lovely alternative when you don't need something grass-like. Another focus might be pet-friendly landscaping. I see many people looking for low-growing lawn areas that use natives instead of typical non-native grasses. But many native grasses have awns, which a concern. Or the plants can't hold up to dog traffic. That kinda ends up leading to sedges, but that can get expensive quickly if you are sourcing plugs for a large area. I will be watching that dog-run video next -- it might be just what I need for ideas.

    • @soilshepherds
      @soilshepherds 7 місяців тому

      Thank you so much for sharing. With the avatar, my initial plan was to use the same avatar but change his shirt, add more motion to his arms, add a hat, etc.. so there is something new with each video. Over time he would grow with us :) However, that all takes time to learn which means I'm making less videos which is not the goal. I never really considered the avatar as branding, but you are right. This exercise has really given me something to think about. Thank you for the regional advice which I agree with 100%. It's easy for me to cover the northeast because I have all these plants at my home and/or my customers home so it's easy to get lots of photos which makes for good videos. However, if I start making money on UA-cam, I'd be able to buy photos of natives from other regions and could incorporate into videos, so this is part of the long-term strategy, Yes, I have wild strawberry and I agree it's a great slow growing groundcover (not full sun). Mine just started blooming in the past week so I need to capture photos. Definitely, worth a video in the near future. Yes, I love the idea of pet friendly videos. After completing the work in our dog run, we got another dog who likes to dig. I regret not adding more plugs to fill-in last year so I have some clean up and will be adding an updated video...

    FYI: just got a catalog from Logee's. Most of the offerings are tropical, but they are selling a winterberry male and female set. I wish more nurseries would sell sets of diecious plants. I would pay more for a sexed plant rather than having to plant multiple plants, then wait for years sometimes to find out if I got a male and female.

      Yeah, invasive exotics are near universal. Once you get into native plants you start to think most everyone's yard looks cheap and generic. You see the environmental harm and the total lack of pollinators on the blooms.

    Thank you so much for a wonderful video. I watched from the beginning to the end the winterberry plant look like something I would love, but I live in Southern California and we don’t get snow where I live and it rarely gets under 40° here either even at night, would a plant like that do all right or is it too hot for it here. The red berries look great. I also like to have things that the birds insects like to eat. Thanks so much for a wonderful, well done video just joined your channel, I am probably going to be 905 sub

      Winterberry really is one of a kind! I’m not familiar with native plants for California but I did some looking and came across Viburnum edule, which has a red berry that is native to California. Not sure if you have seen this one before or if it would work as an alternate.
