Hi, my name is Eric. I love video editing and I love video games. Why not combine the two?
I'll also occasionally feature some TV shows or movies.
On this channel, I'll be diving into games from the past and try to focus on what made them special.
If you enjoy video game essays, retrospective reviews/analyses and cinematic tributes then you are in the right place.
I hope to see you on the channel!

Does They are Billions also use this? It looks like it to me but it's not like I would know. The game is absolutely beautiful tho.
It's definitely isometric but I'm not a 100% if the art is rendered in real time or that they used any pre-rendered assets. It does have the same vibe though and looks awesome!
Painful to see no mention of Factorio in this...
Great example, never played it myself sadly!
Truly phenomenal! But the sad thing is that these modern open world games that are fully rendered have no creativity whatsoever. How many times have I seen devs just drop textures on top of each other, the worst case id say of recent was Dying Light 2. Go on top of a building and look at a distance, its ugly.
There is one in particular named Heroes of Might and Magic III. Played online till these days.
its so sad we cant go back in time
I think Total Annihilation was an important step on the path away from pre-rendered graphics. It mixed a pre-rendered isometric environment with real-time 3d rendered units and 2d explosion sprites. The logic for this (as explained in the marketing for the game at the time) was that increasing screen resolutions and frame rates required vastly more pre-rendered sprites per unit type to achieve smooth rotation, so real-time rendering was actually cheaper.
Beach Life, how is it?
I've got a video of it on the channel, I love the game a lot!
this was one of my most replayed games.... i loved this game when i was a kid
diablo counts too
I must insist that you add HOMM3 to your list. It is a crime that you have not included it already.
Never played it sadly, lots of fans of that game in the comments tho!
You didn't mention that all the old (pre ~2000) RTS games used this style as well.
I did though? I set the timeframe as late 90s and early 00s and mention Roleplaying, STRATEGY and Management games as the most prominent examples. Most of my favorites came out around 2000 though, so i mention more in that timeframe. But of course there's Command and Conquer and Starcraft 1 etc. (which I didn't play back in the day sadly)
I disagree
Fair enough!
Bro what are you smoking? All the examples look like trash 😂
Nah mate, they're like matte paintings or diorama's. They look and aged way better than their 3d counterparts at that time.
Why the focus on only isometric perspectives? Some of the most beautiful pre-rendered graphics aren't isometric. You could have included both with a few extra minutes in length.
I wanted the video to be short and sweet with a focus on isometric games but couldn't think of a more catchy title than this. That's why I start the video saying what it's about. I never expected it to do this well though. There are other video's on YT that focus on the Pre-rendered background titles from the PS1 if you want more :) Also, I grew up with PC games and missed most of the adventure, JRPG's and horror games that used this graphical technique sadly. (Played a couple of 'em later in life)
Great video thanks
OH MY GOSH SIM CITY 4 SOUNDTRACK
I think games like every Resident Evil (pre 4) also deserve a mention.
They'd deserve their own video! I just wanted to focus on isometric PC games for this one.
@@GameTalesHQ Fair enough.
The original Abe's Oddysee from 1997 on PS1 is my favorite.
so much nostalgia, great video
I absolutely love BG 1 and BG2 graphics.. for me it´s also nostalgia and biase, but I just enjoy those the most. Same with F1 and F2.
man...just that snip of Outlaws sent a wave of nostalgia. I loved it, watched my dead play it. It looked incredibly difficult, especially the maze like Sawmill level. Played it as an adult, never really was difficult, but the nostalgia and the feeling stayed with me. Love it, love the animation, story.. everything.
Is funny how they became obsolete supposedly for lack of interactivity but on the new games you can barely interact with the environment which makes the new technologies useless.
You forgot the Sacred.
1:15 What is the name of this game ?
That would be Commandos 2!
Its still used in age of empires 2, so happy to see a nod to my favorite game. Viper and Hera are about to play the warlords tournament final.
No love for StarCraft or Command and Conquer?!
Didn't play them sadly!
Pre Rendered Graphics explained why diablo 2 resurrected looks better than diablo 4.
man I love G1...probably the most out of the series. It has incredible charm, interesting characters, cool locations.. I played G2 and G3 and really like them too, but G1 is like a hug from an old friend. Love it.
I think this style gives objects "weight" ... it looks like something you can pick up (if you were a giant) and feel its weight.
Disco Elysium (2019) has amazing pre rendered visuals!
Lekkere video man!
Bedankt!
Fun fact you can see from Nightmare frontiers Fishing Hamlet and from nightmare frontiers u see nightmare mensis and from fishing Hamlet you can see yarhnam at Kos underwater the dreams are stacked together but Hunters dream is still unknown
Yep! I love that detail.
"let's devs work faster" until it got to complex and games take 5 years to make.
Uhm...I'll go with Treasure Trap, Amiga 500. Great graphics, but it was not an arcade, it was a damn puzzle game
Btw if you go old camp fire mage first, then later on join the water-mages, you'll be able to become necromancer later on and learn 6th circle of magic with xardas. At least thats what i remember from my childhood. Then you can use uriziel rune which is super strong, and also spam skeletons and demons.
Of all the art styles to argue about being timeless, this is definitely the absolute last I would call timeless or beautiful.
I think these graphics aged far more gracefully than their real 3d counterparts personally. At the end of the day it's all personal preference of course!
9:27 I scrolled through all the comments to see if this was mentioned, but I didn’t see anyone point this out, so I thought I would share! If you ever pick up a blood vile with 20 in your inventory, a green icon of a chest will appear in the left corner of the text box, confirming you've picked up the item. This indicates that the extra item you picked up was sent to your inventory storage in the Hunter's Dream. The storage chest is to the immediate right of the weapon repair/upgrade station. You can swap items between your current inventory and stored items. This includes all items that have a max carry limit, like silver bullets and oil urns. Check out your inventory chest in the Hunters Dream, and let me know how many blood viles you have! More than one, I bet. 😉
Edited: I said right hand corner, rather than left. D'oh!
Silver (1999) very fun and ahead of its time RPG not many people know about with beautiful pre-rendered graphics.
God I miss this game so much. I hope Night Dive studios picks this one up.
I must say, I am young and should be biased towards the newer generation of games, however as a small child I played age of mythology and age of empires 3 (and later 2 as well) and going and looking at the newest age of empire games feels cartoony compared to the feel of realism I got from the older ones, or maybe thats just me.
Right now graphics look better than pre rendered pictures did back in the day. That is why we no longer use them, that and they are a headache to scale. Right now it is like, graphics already look like they from a movie, we can't go beyond that with pre rendered, after all it is rendered in real time.
The OG Desperados will always be one of my favorite games of all time. Probably the hardest single-player RTS I have ever played, as long as you avoid some unfortunate cheese mechanics and play how it was meant to be played. Also helps that the game is absolutely gorgeous.
I will do a video on that game in the future!
oh and star wars age of empires games 😩😩 star wars battlegrounds 🔥🔥🔥
why doesn't project zomboid look as detailed as these games?
Beach Life, now there’s a throwback!
A man of culture I see!
I am using a late 2013 iMac running OS X 10.12.6 (Sierra) that I am deliberately not updating - I have on it Simcity 4 Deluxe, Age of Empires 3, and irrelevant but notably the best of its time, The Need For Speed 5 - Porsche Unleashed.
starcraft
used a lot in Japanese games back then too
AI upscaled Stronghold looks fucking awesome
The Stronghold: Definitive Edition is one of the best looking games using this graphical technique!
robin hood legend of sherwood has a special place in my heart x.x also was the song during that show off intro song part of the menu screen from that game?
