We all love a good scare every once in a while, and there’s no better place to find that than in horror games. But what about non-horror games? Sometimes, the most shocking moments come from games we least expect. For me, horror is most terrifying when it addresses real human issues, and these games blindsided me with just that. Games That Fully Embrace The Medium: Literally every Nintendo game ever
I literally never thought I'd see Beach Life again but here it is in a video about beautiful old games
I love how over time, more and more people have shown me that I'm not the only one that loved Beach Life back in the day!
Gothic 1 and 2 are hands down the best RPGs ever made and I don't accept any counter argument. I remember shedding some tears when the studio closed...
Clicking on this video because of curiosity and recognizing part of the ost from The Last Guardian as the video started immediately caught my attention as I thought: "this guy has great taste" and right after that hit the like button and subscribed. I knew I was going to like the video because anyone who appreciates that game has my utmost respect. Keep up the great work!
Thank you, I really appreciate that. The Last Guardian is a special game.
As an autistic kid, seeing another autistic person being taken advantage of so cruelly just makes me want to scream. Just because we’re different doesn’t mean we’re god damn tool to use, and I will maul anyone who says otherwise. David needs so many cozy blankets and soft stuffed animals and all the comfort food he can eat. I’d hug him, but I think he’d be pretty touch adverse for a while after all of that, even if it seems like it was just for a day. Sensory overload is no joke, it BREAKS you.
The Last Guardian is such a masterpiece in storytelling with gameplay
40:02 the music changes from a single person singing to multiple voices echoing when other players joins you was such an experience compared to just before which seems to be just an slightly altered version of previous ending songs, it provided the feeling of you truly aren't alone and there are countless other people who is helping you.(recently completed Nier Automata and I had such a fun experience with it)
Alone in the Dark, Resident Evil. Prerendered graphics added soo much.
there's no open world fatigue, begone casual
The fatigue is a personal thing. This video is for people that feel that way. Obviously not everyone has the same tastes lol
Wow beach life, now all the old memories flowing back.
Missed Soma and hellblade and the best time manipulation would have to be prince of persia trilogy, erasing 1 problem and creating a bigger one and the masterpiece ending
I'd argue that Soma and Hellblade were already dark from the start, this video is focussed on games that went in that direction unexpectedly. I didn't play the Prince of Persia games though!
@GameTalesHQ Soma was dark but you never expect my god this is not even my body.who am I ? Hellblade for me was is this real or just her imagination
@@mydroidid They're both solid picks for sure. I just think they didn't really fit the 'unexpected horror' angle. I love both of these games though! And I do a pretty deep dive on SOMA in my video "Games That Fully Embrace The Medium"
My favorite old game with pre-render graphic Riven: The Sequel to Myst (1997) Resident evil 1-2-3 (1996-1999) Age of empire 2 (1999) Final fantasy 7-8-9 (1996-2000) Resident evil 1 gamecube (2002)
Just hit me that Reed sounds soo much like Micah from RDR2
Awesome video but I need to come back to it I don't want to get spoiled from games I want to play now
Music is too upbeat
I can see why you'd think that. I thought crescendo of the music fit nicely with the human parts of the story, the bond between the characters. But the video is 7 years old by now, I'd definitely do something different if I remade this vid :)
I played ME in its entirety 3 whole times and never knew the Overlord DLC existed. Then I bought the Legacy Edition to stream a 4th playthrough with my friends. I was NOT prepared. IMO it's the most upsetting thing in Mass Effect.
Sorry, any list that skips the existence of monster hunter is incomplete. It's franchise that can't be other than games. The gameplay, and worldbuilding within the gameplay, is epitome of "this is mastery, this is magnum opus".
Big fan of Monster Hunter, but it didn't really fit into this more narrative focussed video. But yeah, I lost myself for a while in Monster Hunter World :)
I know it may seems bit obvious, but maybe one of the most famous games that uses a morality point system is Red Dead Redemption 1&2. The Honor point system gives you the option of four different endings, differentiating between high honor and low honor. Every little thing you do in the game dictates your position on the honor scale, but this isnt a hidden thing from the player like Metro 2033
Ok
I was 13 or 14 when i played Spec Ops. That scene with civilians was some really heavy shit for my innocent ass. I watched at that time a lot dark and heavy movies. But since its a game, YOU did this it was your imput that killed all those people. Really made me think about death and stuff like that.... What a amazing piece of art in games. Really good video took me down memory lane, thank you.
homm 3도 이거와 같은 방법으로 만들어진 게임일까요?
Gran Turismo 2 [Europe PAL version] 🎵Blame- Everything But The Girl (Grooverider Jeep Mix)🎵
Dang I *still* can't see anything about ending E without being brought to tears.
I blieve Nier Automata's true Ending is truly something that a cracked game cannot achieve
Shit man. I really wish I rented this game back in the day when I’d see it on the shelves all the time. I don’t know why but I just never checked it out, my mind was like “gun? Just gun? That’s dumb” if only I knew it was open world and pretty much red dead before red dead.
@@jaythered420 Yeah, it's such a bland name for an epic game!
damn, the Brothers part give me goosebumps
Great video! Yeah, those games were amazing, and they ran really well, and they age super well (provided that they get some sort of remaster to work in today's resolution).
In the same vein of ME: Overlord, the hidden horror of Portal is a rough one too, especially when you find out what happened to Caroline. Spoilers; Its revealed in the second game that Aperture was once run by an eccentric businessman named Cave Johnson and his assitant, Caroline. After running the company into the ground with needless and seemingly random tests, Cave contracts cancer and makes a note to his science team to leave him, but offer Caroline an opportunity to become immortal, as most of the staff also have contracted cancer due to moon rocks. The Aperture Science team takes the still alive Caroline, forces the women into a machine and has her mind ripped from her body, then bombarded with knowledge, causing her to go completely insane, losing the once-friendly Caroline and being replaced with the cold, calculating GladOs. She eventually got the last laugh when she gassed the facility during Bring Your Daughter to Work day. Its also implied that the Ratman, a scientist who survived the neurotoxin but went mad from it, was one of the scientists who turned Caroline into GladOS.
damn sim city 4 was sexy
Great Video Man!!
Thanks mate!
Hey, where are you from? It's interesting because of the fact that the gothic series is just popular in East Europe and Germany.
I'm from the Netherlands, so not too far off :)
one of the best feelings i remember is playing this and the second gothic games as a child..
To this day, every time I see the Outer Wilds dlc ending or the credits for Nier:Automata I absolutely cry my heart out. On the same track of games using the medium (it's not exactly a game but a visual novel) Steins;Gate 0 does a very clever thing with save games not breaking continuity of story, something that couldn't be achieved with a book or an anime adaptation.
17:37 In Metal gear: Phantom pain there's a hidden moral system. Thought, i think they didn't implement it to the full extent Basically, in the game you can get covered in blood if you sustain damage or kill. You go back to the base, to wash it away, along with dirt/sweat. But if you start killing a lot of soldiers, or harm animals, the blood will not wash away from you. I didn't know that, and when it happened first time it was a quiet moment of shock. I showered again. It didn't work. I restarted the game, thinking it's a bug, but no. You can beat the game almost without killing anything, and in that moment it all settles. How many you've killed, and how Snake cannot wash that away, it soaked his skin, his suit. Also soldiers around the base will start talking about Snake in a bit of a fearful way, and when you hear that, it just hurts in an odd way. They would always be in amazement of Big Boss, but now they feel a change in him, how he's gloomy and violent.
I'd like to add What remains of Edith Finch. It's a short two-three hour long game. It's basically just a novel, but i think the way it's done can only be experienced in a game. It's important that you control what's happening, and that you need to cross that little moment before the story ends yourself. Especially Lewis's story. I think about it to this day. Highly recommend!
Why is this video so tear jerking? Like, it's an analytical essay about game mechanics, wtf bro
@@ikkeheltvanlig Well yes, but it is also basically my love letter to games in general. I tend to gravitate towards more emotional experiences.
I wish JRPGs could come back to those pre rendered graphics too.... With simpler graphics, proper world maps and no dubs... All 3D JRPGs with dubs are soooo cringe...
Open world games are the best. They just need mechanics that matter.
You're so right. I'm currently making old school shoot em ups with a program called shmup creator, it's brilliant! It's like a modern shoot em up construction kit that was on the c64
Brothers is a game that stuck with me because of this single moment. I was thinking that maybe the game has glitched out or maybe I've missed something, when I came to the same realization you had and tried the older brother controls. I won't lie, when the younger brother swam alone, struggling, yet powered through, I cried. Heck, it still makes me cry whenever I remember that moment. What a beautiful, bittersweet, moment. Never have I experienced something like that before in video games. I was mostly playing action and FPS games back then. After playing Brothers, I resolved myself to try every genre in gaming even though I don't vibe with that genre. All in search for a moment like that again.
The list you have shown I only played 7 of them. Thanks for giving us the list I will try them as soon as I can! :)
This is deffinding the ineccent song for killing the bad so long good people can live and thrive so bad people can not hurt them any more
i’ve wanted to write for games for so long. it’s not the same as writing for shows or books and i love them so much.
Alan Wake 2 needs to be here too
Gosh you forgot to include the game INDIKA, in that game there is a prayer mechanic where you hold a button to keep the devil's words away in order to solve puzzles and there is a part in the game where if you pray, without any need to, when a man is dying you get an achievement. It doesn't do anything other than feel immersive because nothing prompts you to do it, you can just decide on your own to pray for a dying man.
I didn't forget INDIKIA, I simply haven't played it yet. I will soon though!
The trilogy needs a Halo 2 Anniversary treatment.
I rarely feel this thankful for a list of game recommendations
@@TheRealJaySway I hope you enjoy the games :)
I still cry when I hear "weight of the world" I cried just listening to the description of that final moment in Nier. It changed my life, my cat passed away a week ago from kidney failure I had to put him down so he would be in anymore pain. I buried him to that song.
