Games That Took A Dark Turn
We all love a good scare every once in a while, and there’s no better place to find that than in horror games. But what about non-horror games? Sometimes, the most shocking moments come from games we least expect.
For me, horror is most terrifying when it addresses real human issues, and these games blindsided me with just that.

Hardware limitations forced developers to focus more on gameplay design instead of graphics..
I cannot stand photorealistic games and do not play them
Top 1% game. I hope to god Sony don't buy Fromsoft...
Maybe something will happen *if* Sony acquires FromSoft?
weird addition maybe but genshin has this feeling for me, with the war happening rn and the abyss's effects on the lands its getting more darker and deeper
you can go for sekiro too, senpou temple monks to make their own divine child and get the immortality, literally kidnap kids and do experiment on them and if they are unsuccessful they turn them into taro troops or centipede or the kids just dies.
My problem with Spec Ops is I figured it out pretty quick. I didn't want to use the White Phosphorus in the first place but they spawn unlimited enemies. I tried winning without and yeah they don't end if you don't use WP. When I did use it and saw all those dots I immediately thought I bet those are civvies and didn't bomb. The game just stay there until you do so you don't have a choice though someone did point out you always have the choice to stop playing.
It's a story beat that has to happen. I agree that its effect is greatly deminished if you figured it out beforehand. I do think Walkers psychosis and descent into darkness is very effective regardless. I'm not the biggest fan of the notion to stop playing, it feels a bit cheap. (Even though the game's writer is the one that said it)
I know fallout is creepy to begin with but clearing the supermarket always scared me
Will European assault get a retrospect video?
I haven't played that game before, maybe in the future.
One of the few games where I went and asked myself WTF in disgust , horror and terror was F.E.A.R, that game was psychological and literal horror acompanied by the depths of what human fucked up human nature can really do if we are blinded by ego, ignorance and no moral codex. I won't spoil much for somebody who hasn't played it but one of the few fucked up things is that father puts his daughter in an induced coma in a sphere like medical sarcophagus because she had exhibited phenomenal psychic powers and he wants her to give birth to a child so that child has the same genes as her for science experiments.
Man somone only plays fps military games and it shows. Theres plenty more fucked up things in games that come out of nowhere. Silent Hill 2 with angelas story is the biggest one on the top of my head.
@@joshuacuevas649 You should check out my upcoming video, will be up this week. I play way more than just military shooters. I was just not prepared for the horror in these games. Silent Hill 2 is a horror game, this vid is about non horror titles.
Isometric games were the best! Far more relaxed to play...
It really shows what kind of monster Gavin when paragon Shepard shows anger and disgust and beats Gavin with a gun. All of those voice lines and actions are usually reserved for renegade Shepard. And all totally justified as even the player is probably feeling the same, especially if you are neurodivergent or know someone who are.
the most played part is where people skipped 'life is strange' lol
@@devinplayseverything3764 People skipped around about equally if you look at analytics. It's to be expected with this kind of video.
i played it in 2022.... it's the GREATEST
Final Fantasy 9
Make more on this topic.
This is why ra2 is peak
we love Scott Cawthon's pre rendered graphics
I consider final fantasy VII and Kirby super star ultra my favorite games of all time and 60% of the reasons i love those games are the prerendered graphics and models
I am a bit disappointed I did not see my all time favorite game Ultima VII Pagan in here. 🙂
Never played it sadly!
@@GameTalesHQ, quite controversial by some, my most favorite game by far! Thirty years have passed since I played it and still every now and then I think about it. 🙂 But I think it would be a bit late for you to play it now.
Hmm. I seem to be in the tiny minority who kept project overlord going. 😬 To me. One man’s suffering was nothing in the face of galactic extermination. Anything was justifiable to stop the Reapers. Any edge had to be taken. In times of such extremes, ethics and morals were lofty ideals, survival by any means was all that mattered. If we had defeated the reapers, I’d have gladly paid for such a crime… Course I was peak edgelord in 2010. Might have a different take if I replayed it nowadays lol
There is something to be said for 'the greater good', but even so, Gaven should've tried everything to make it more comfortable for his brother. He seems to have zero empathy.
Dam. If that was me in spec ops and id just done that, I’d eat my own bullet. 😱
Can't wait for Gothic remake!
Terms of more modern Isometric games, the Shadowrun Returns games are phenomenal.
The way only three games were touched on here when I can think of so, so many more is so scary. Please do more of these😭
What would be your picks? I might do another in the future.
Add resident evil 3 to this list
I have to say, the Overlord DLC was the one mission in the Mass Effect trilogy that managed to unnerve me. I think a lot of my unease on the mission was due to just how at odds with typical Mass Effect design the interface device was. It was pretty jarring to finally reach David and go from the typical grey-plastic-and-holographic-display Mass Effect aesthetic to something that wouldn't look out of place in Warhammer 40k (I'm thinking of Penitent Engines, or anything connected to the Adeptus Mechanicus.)
Jagged Alliance 2 is the best game of all time
Back when games used to be fun and not a chore like most modern 3d games
If you only play "Life is Strange" once, it's a nice experience. It's only when you play it a second time and decide on the exact opposite as last time and notice that the overall outcome and story arc stay the exact same with only minor deviations you notice that the game mechanic isn't quite as intelligent as it was advertised and you're majorly let down.
That is the case with most of these type of "choose your own adventure" kind of games. It's the same with The Walking Dead. It doesn't deminish the impact of some of its scenes though, as they are well executed!
@@GameTalesHQ True. I just thought the marketing approach was off for LiS because they tried to sell decision making as the main point although it wasn't in the end. If they chose the "twisty" story (pun intended) as their main selling point they could have avoided that kind of letdown. To be fair, I don't know how much they had to adjust the mechanic to what was doable within their time frame, so I've cut them some slack and filed it under "unfortunate".
Time to reinstall Sim City 4!
They Are Billions is another great isometric one!
Gun could do with a remake, with a continuation from where it left off, with plenty of side-missions and plenty of activities available for when the main story is complete, also maybe a suprise set of missions after completion...Great game, full of flavour and atmosphere!🤠💫
I played Gothic for the 9000th time in 2024, my friend if your not satisfied with the graphics of "Gothic 1" with all due respect DON'T install it, Gothic is a holy artifact and shall NOT be modified
I was perfectly fine with the graphics. When looking for mods to get the game in a playable state I tried out a couple of mods. After that I did a clean reinstall of the game to make it vanilla again, or so I thought.... It seems the Riisis Gothic 1 TextureMix V1.1 did not get uninstalled. This is the reason why the game's textures look slightly different. Also, I read somewhere that the DirectX patch made the game run smoother, and it did. In hindsight, I would've played without. Oh well, you live and you learn. I played Gothic 2 totally vanilla afterwards :)
@@GameTalesHQ I hear you, I was waiting impatiently for the overhaul mod "History of khorinis" I'm sure you heard of it, it was the only mod I considered playing because it felt like an extension for Gothic 2, though I didn't like some of it's graphics upgrades like a few armors etc.. but everything else felt like Gothic! and I wish if only Piranha Bytes made Gothic 3 in Gothic 2 engine! it would've been the ultimate game that I would rather play than do anything else before I die
I almost thought it was a game adaption of the gyro manga
Love the sim city 4 music
Every time I see even a split second of signalis in a video essay my head perks up like “my hyperfixation???👀👀👀👀”
I always adored the art style of Commandos 2, it's a shame more developers didn't create games based in that era with that artistic style.
I questioned why a video with this title needed a cw, then I remembered autoplay.
I think it's always good to give people a heads up. But yeah, it's mostly because of autoplay!
Reminds me of the Bloody Baron Quest in Witcher 3. Wasn't ready for that like at all.
@@dandyvision42 What a great quest that was!
Spec ops: the line had my entire guts sink into a black hole.. what an amazing delivery of dark and disturbing real events
I've always found that the prisoner segment of Tomb Raider (2013) reminded me of Outlast, which is one of my favourite horror games. But that section was unexpectedly scary in the action adventure game
I really liked that segment too! That's why I put it in the honorable mentions :)
wow, a videogame video essay with post-ironic horror themes that talks about spec ops the line! theres only like 500000000 of those already available! and wow, the guy talking has a low-tone unenthustiastic voice???? this is amazing!
@@pigslopenjoyer4595 Glad you enjoyed it!
pre rendered graphics are bad, which is why they arent used any more. Every one of those scenes would look 1000x better in 3d
@@scalz420 hard disagree
for anyone that doesn't understand how horrifically bad white phosphorus is should watch ChemicalForce's video on it
Totally agree with you. They still look awesome!
Unfortunately I largely disagree with the statement that combat is simply a stat check. Enemies can take minimum amount of damage regardless of your stats. With enough know how and being able to avoid damage or Parry enemy strikes, you can pretty much kill any enemy in the game at level 1. It takes time effort and concentration but it's doable. Getting more stats and becoming stronger just easier, but by no means does this make combat a simple stat check.
I was mainly talking about the ranged combat, since I went that route in my playtrough. I know you can master the melee system eventually, but as relatively new player, it is hard to figure out where to improve. Perhaps I was a little too harsh with calling it a stat check, but I still feel like the combat is servicable if you compare it to the game's better aspects :)
@GameTalesHQ that is somewhat true when talking about ranged, but even so you have so many good Dex weapon available for melee combat that you shouldn't feel constricted at any point.
No one’s talking about the Sim City 4 soundtrack? It gives me goosebumps
One of the best soundtracks of all time if you ask me!
@ I still play the game sometimes, it has something that today’s games don’t have
I loved commandos when it came out. Even my rubbish PC could manage it fine.
