I am a potter and a pottery teacher. At the moment I have a tiny studio, that opens up to the elements so I understand the challenges that many potters face. In my videos my aim is to explain the processes and methods involved in making pots as simply as possible.
For a good few years making pottery was my profession. My studio was focused on designing and producing handmade ceramic tableware and objects. My client list included retailers, galleries, restaurants, cafes, cultural organizations and commercial corporations. Since Covid I have taken a step back and since have focused more on teaching. Teaching really helps me understand the struggles and challenges faced by potters at all stages of their journey - and provides a constant source of inspiration.

A relaxing low key approach to glaze testing
In this video I show you one of my approaches to testing glazes. Its not a replacement for test tiles - its a further way to have some control over finishing and glazing projects. I make and glaze small functional test pieces. These pieces allow you to troubleshoot before you glaze a whole body of work. But also see how a glaze works on various clay bodies. So I am throwing a number of small plates on the wheel. I make these in different pieces and add different surface details so I can see how glaze behaves on both flat and horizontal surfaces and how it pools on textured surfaces.

Really beautiful❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you!
this is very cool. i really appreciate the little visuals you added of the cross-section as you were throwing!
Thank you. I'm glad they help 😄
Really love your videos can I ask what video editor and template place you use?
Adobe premiere. No templates.... Just adding elements as we need. Learning the editing on the job 😄
I love those plates and that you use them to test - aesthetics, for and function. Wonderful. Especially with the cupcakes on them - more art! Love it1
Thank you so much! 😊
You say they don’t replace test tiles, but why not! Is there something else the test tiles do? Just curious!
Good question. No mini dishes do everything that test tiles do - but they take up more space and use more glaze. So generally I can test more combinations with test tiles (I make them to stand upright from thrown sections) and then store them. Also these plates are often rather cute and being useful i tend to start using them ... so they end up being co-opted into the studio or kitchen!
I love both of your cake stand designs and the two options. They are both so elegant and beautiful.
Thanks so much! 😊
I love the glaze and colour. Isn't porcelain the most beautiful (though so finicky to work with).
It really is!
I followed your tutorial and made a set of these for my grandparents for their Christmas presents, my grandparents LOVED them so much. Thank you!!!
Wonderful!
wow! so practical. Where can I buy the rubber rings?
Some $2 stores might have them. But they are also available online. Search for Silicone O'ring. Oh and check that they are food safe if you will use them with food.
I love this clay, such gorgeous texture. Would love to see a series about different types of clays and how to choose which clay to match the purpose.
Great suggestion!
what a wonderful design. Very creative and such a good way of making it lock. Thanks for sharing this design.
Thank you! Cheers!
So practical and useful, and relatively do-able. How thick would you suggest to make the walls - I don't want to make it too heavy but am mindful of the thermal shock and other issues?
Yes, it needs to be quite robust. By all means make them a little thicker than usual. But the most important thing is the consistency. So no parts that are thinner. Especially in the base section!
what an interesting idea and lots of opportunities for experimenting and creativity. Thank you, they are gorgeous.
You are so welcome!
I love these. The speckled clay is beautiful.
Greetings from Durango, Colorado. Thank you for this very informative video. I will be trying this on the wheel soon.
That's a beautiful part of the world. I'm glad the video was helpful. Good luck with your making!
Beauty, you're a pro no doubt. Thanks for this.
You are so welcome!
Wonderful video.
Thank you!
This is awesome! You should sell this if not already doing so. 🎉🎉🎉
Glad you enjoyed it😄
So nicely done. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you! Cheers!
Замечательная идея. Буду пробовать тоже такие делать. Спасибо.
You are welcome... Hope it goes well!
Did you glaze fire together? If so, how did you do that to not damage them? Thanks for this instructional video!
You are most welcome. Oh, I didn't mention that I fired them separately.... there are too many possible contact points which i thought might make them difficult to separate.
Such a great video! Cooking pots are a great idea!
Great, hope its helpful!
With this method of drying + flipping, do you loosely cover the whole thing for a few days? I wonder if I should cover the stand portion tighter since the plate will take a while to dry touching my plastic bat.
If you notice the stand obviously drying quicker then by all means extra cover can help equalize the drying. Yes loosely cover the whole to dry slowly is a good idea. When I made this videos I was a little pressed for time so i covered loosely for a day and then kept an eye on it. Good luck!
@ Thank you!! 🤞
Thank you so much for this video. I had searched for a tutorial to make a tagine, but gave up because I couldn’t find one this informative.
You are most welcome. I would love to hear how you go!
thank you for sharing all of it, even the crack! Reminds us all that pottery is a journey not just the destination. Love your work!
That's lovely to hear. Thank you.
Hi Tufts Studio ! first of all I want to thank you for this wonderful video , I am Moroccan and we use Tagine every single day we rarely use something else to cook and there's so many recipes you could try, I recommend "beef tagine with prunes" it's my favorite, Tagine is really is a magical item to have in your kitchen it makes every dish taste so much better. the seasoning was on point but my mom likes to add an extra step, the first time you cook with the tagine it is recommended to put in some onions and left over pieces of veggies with a generous amount of oil and let it cook and while it cooks you rub it all over the inside part of the base and keep it doing it until the veggies turn brown , also as you mentioned clay doesn't do well with sudden temperature changes and you can't use it on high heat, so to fix this issue we use a round metal disk that has holes all over (unfortunately I have no idea what it's called but If you search up tagine video's you'll be able to see it ), we put it under the tagine while cooking to diffuse the heat and when we want to serve it we put it on thick bamboo/wood placemats and avoid putting it on cold surfaces. also a trick that my mom does sometimes to know if the tagine needs more water, you pour some water on the top of the tagine that cup looking hole and it reduces as the water inside the tagine does (this trick doesn't work 100% it depends on the size of the tagine and how much water is added but I thought it's a cool trick to add ) 💕💕
Wow, thank you for this great information! I want to make a tagine, and this will be very helpful.
Thank you so much for this! I agree... It's a great way of cooking and I am really interested in cooking more with a tagine. The next tagine I make I will be certain to use your method for seasoning for the first time. I think you mean a heat diffuser for the flame and I was thinking I might need one. Now I will definitely try it with a heat diffuser. Also I really like the water in the top idea and might make the top handle a bit larger for exactly this reason. Thank you It is great to hear from experience. So helpful 💕
Great video. Food looks good too!
Thank you 😋 This was fun to make.
This was a wonderful relaxing video. I really enjoyed it.
Thank you so much!
Wow. They look great. I love the traditional looking shape!❤❤❤
Thank you! Cheers!
I really enjoy the projects you make on this channel and can see the time and effort your put into the tutorial. Just wanted to say thanks! I do have a left wing question, what type of wheel do you use? I plan to buy a new one next year and like the way yours looks. Tia! And for the videos
Thank you, that's so lovely to hear. My wheel is a Brent C that I purchased around 25 years ago....I think it was already at least 20 years old.! So perhaps an 80's model. Not a peep since I've had it. The huge splash pan is very handy. Other wheels have come and gone. I would definitely look out for one of these 😄
Air tight clay containers? Wow, that is such a great idea! 🕯🕯🕯
They work ... With a lot of persistence.... Working on a further canister idea now... Slay tuned 💡💡💡
Hi, I would like to try this but I nned it to be finished piece 12.5" wide. I see the problem of warping. I am thinking firing it upside down and support it with the flat plate in the middle of the upside down area underneath. Not sure what to do when I glaze it.
That could work but as you point out glazing might be tricky. You could also could also bisque higher and glaze (with the appropriate glaze for the lower temperature) lower. So support during bisque to a high temperature and then glaze fire right side up but to a lower temperature to reduce the risk of warping. This requires lots of testing though. I do find that these work well at a lower temperature and fire these to earthenware. They are obviously not as robust as a midfire or stoneware but still work as a cake plate. If you are happy with a flat top then I find this shape in my video ua-cam.com/video/V46W6IO3chs/v-deo.htmlsi=W-ASlHV3o5PFhtqz to be less prone to warping. I try to make sure that the base (the stand) curves up and outwards to well support the top, and that the top is not too thin. Good luck with it, making cake plates is a joy when they work out!
This was such a great tutorial!
Thank you so much!
Lucky the lid didn’t bump into the glazed interior. What happened with the other two? What went wrong?
With one, there was just not enough room for for the silicone as it pushed up. The other just slightly too much room so did not secure firmly! Very finicky.
Oh ... With the lids....there is quite a bit of room between the flange and the glazed wall. I also could have not glazed all the way to the top if this had been an issue.
Good video, lots to know, but your teaching speed is good to go. It's a great little pot with a well fitting lid, thanks for sharing 😊
You are very welcome!
Why did you clean the glaze off the base instead of firing the canister upside down?
Good question. I could have ... however sometimes when firing on the rim if any part of the rim catches on the shelf, the rim can warp a little as it shrinks. And for this project particularly, the rim needed to stay round! A layer of calcined alumina would help with this, but i find it can get a little messy.
Nice! I appreciate that trimming a dry pot with a sponge tip. It's amazing how the weather changes can affect drying times. Also, I'm learning a great deal watching you glaze. You're so neat and tidy. Question: Is there any way to look at a glaze recipe and tell whether it will work better in oxidation or reduction? Thanks!
I love this question. I think experience and knowledge of glaze chemistry can go along way to allow you to predict results. Glaze results also depend on the clay which is also affected by the kiln atmosphere so a glaze might look great in reduction on an iron bearing clay but not so lovely on a white clay. I think knowing materials is key here. An obvious example would be copper glazes that give you reds when fired in reduction, and green when fired in oxidation. Looking at ingredients and working out what they do will help. But glaze chemistry is one thing i could do with more of!
Thanks for the reply, and a great answer to my question.
I’ve made a few tumblers with bamboo lids that have a hole for a straw - it’s not easy getting the measurements right with shrinkage. As it was a project for a gift, I ended up making three to get one that worked to my liking. I’ve wanted to make storage jars with the bamboo lids that have the silicon ring but after making the tumblers, I put that project aside for a bit. Maybe it would be a good new year challenge. Thank you for the video. Blessings ❤
Thanks good ideas
You're welcome 😊
I loved the finished product so much I ordered the same clay. Is this a commercial glaze and if so could you tell me which one? Do you find it cutlery marks? Love your videos.
Thank you, that's lovely to hear. Yes this is a commercial glaze. It's from Fired up Kilns - their Opal mid fire glaze. I find it has a satiny surface and haven't noticed any cutlery marks yet but I might do a bit of testing.
Great timing for me to watch this video. Just had the discussion with my instructor about creating my own style, throwing more intentionally etc. About time after 12 years of throwing. I'm the type of person who uses one route going somewhere and a different route going home. Never wanting to travel the same path over and over but now I think I'm ready to do some repetition with my craft and create my signature style. Thanks for another beautifully done video. I've written down your 7 tips so I can look at them often.
Oh that's so funny I totally relate. It's not a bad thing though. All that experience doing things in different ways counts too! The process of throwing with intention will propel your making though 😊
I feel for you on the blistering as I have been struggling with glaze craters when using a particular clay and have decided to relegate the remaining supply to outdoor planters and try out some different clay bodies. When it works that glaze is beautiful on the porcelain so if you can solve the blistering you will have some lovely work.
Yes, the blistering is so disappointing .. I will experiment with a glazes that fires a little higher.
Another good video thankyou 😊
You’re welcome 😊
artwork 🙌🏽
Not only clear and informative - but what a beautiful voice to listen to!! 😊
Thank you so much. That's a lovely comment😃
Such Beautiful pieces! Id love to try throwing porcelain one day. Thanks for the video!
You are so welcome!
Beautiful! I throw with cone 10 Babu porcelain. I have trouble getting a really white outcome of the clay itself, like the bottoms or many of my pieces are glazed inside but naked outside. Drives me crazy to expect a beautiful white and get gray. I work at a community studio so have no control over firings. I'm wondering if it's because the kiln is filled largely with stoneware and lots of different glazes so the atmosphere is affecting my clay body.
Is the kiln fired in reduction or oxidation? I can understand how frustrating that can be!
@ it’s gas, reduction firing.
Great tips! Thanks for showing your glazing process, and sharing your firing challenge? I'm curious to know if you had a kiln full of porcelain pieces at the too-high temperature or if you did a test firing first.
Luckily I only had one set of these in the kiln, and a few little flat dishes in the same glaze/porcelain combination. This was actually really helpful because the flat pieces including the plate didn't blister - indicating that could be a temperature issue. But, yes lucky it wasn't a kiln load!
How far out did you flatten? What is your shrink rate -ty
Shrinkage rate is around 12% so I flatten to around 25 cm and then bring the rim out to 27cm. This gives me a plate size of 24 cm 😃
Beautiful plates and great video as I attempt my first set 🤞🏽
Thank you! 🤗
