I think the 'need to win a flag to be the GOAT' argument is more true for sports such as basketball, where there are only 5 players on the court, and 10 in a team in total, in a small confined area. If you are that good, you should be able to elevate another few guys around you on a basketball court to the highest level. The difference 1 man makes in that sense is enormous. Nearly every play can be designed to go through your superstar, further heightening their influence. But AFL footy? There are 18 guys per team on a huge paddock. 1 guy can't control an entire offense like they can in other sports, or defend multiple people. The team matters more in winning flags than individual players. The argument for the individual GOAT needs to be based on individual stats. So while there is merit to the argument in general, it's hard to apply it to AFL footy.

Look, the Brownlow was always the fairest and best -- not the other war around. There's lots of theories on how the umpires couldn't get it right. There was the blonde theory, the midfield medal theory, and the 'don't diss the umpire theory'. There were many more, but the Brownlow rarely ever tracked with the 'most valuable player' -- however it was worked out. Scott Wynd, Barry Round, and so many others reaped an award they did not deserve to hold.
