A day of land surveying in the Catskill Mountains. I thought it would be an interesting exercise to film a day of work. This is a pretty typical day for where I survey. We started the day marking out a property line for a client who was having trees cleared and then moved on to a small boundary survey. Work is always interesting and we get to see some very old and unique things out in the woods...

      I print them straight from the NYS DEC website. They have decent/compact maps for most of their recreation areas. Between those maps and a handheld GPS that usually all I need. The larger maps are great for planning routes but cumbersome to deal with while paddling a small canoe ha.

    My wife and I rented from OARS last year on our anniversary trip. Did bikes one day from Franklin to the end of the Sandy Creek trail, and canoed the next day from our Airbnb in Kennerdell to Emlenton. Really great experience and two beautiful days. We got to explore Whann Run about midway between Kennerdell and Emlenton, some interesting history there as well as a nice waterfall. Where was the island you camped on on night 2? Would definitely like to do a more extended canoe trip in the future sometime on the Allegheny.

      The model I have is the WeeLassie. I’m very happy with the canoe. Biggest thing with these canoes are they are purpose built for flat water and portaging. They are great for this. However durability, stability, and capacity aren’t their strong suit. Definitely a purpose built product. I was able to buy mine second hand so I didn’t have to spend too much. I don’t think I’d ever pay msrp on these canoes unless I knew I’d be using them every weekend. Some places allow you to rent them to try them. You should look into that and get a chance to paddle one!

      No schooling for me. I do have a degree but it is in an unrelated field. Depending on the state you’re located you may need a degree for licensure but it is possible to have a good career in surveying without a license. If you ever have questions or need advice just let me know. Your first step would be applying to local surveying/engineering firms as a survey field tech. That will get you started and you’ll know pretty quick if it’s a job you enjoy!

    I enjoyed this video! Thank you. It is very interesting to watch another survey crew at work. I grew up downstate from the Catskills. My first taste of surveying was in forestry school up by Lake George. They taught us with brass compasses on jake staffs, plumb bobs, and chains. The old way. Our teacher was one of the greats! All of the 30 year surveyor veterans that have taught me are in that category. The Total Stations will always amaze me. Precise but easy. Precise but tough. Opening things up and cutting line maybe isn't so easy, but it's a price that is part of the job. This video was made in early spring I think. I've done field surveying in Florida, Alaska, the Dakotas, and Texas. Florida and Alaska have big vegetation so there we mostly used Total Stations (Leica). In the Plains though, that is mostly open ground and grass, so mostly GPS is used (Trimble). Surveying in the grasslands can really spoil a field surveyor. Surveying in the North Dakota Badlands above the Little Missouri is all Glory! That is GPS work. I had less fun surveying with grizzly bears around in Alaska. The alligators in Florida weren't so bad. Mosquitos and hornets are more terrible. Everybody likes boundary surveys the best. Its finding the old monuments, survey crews love finally finding them. Boundary that involves encroachment might become a bit more tense. Many say boundary surveying is the core of Land Surveying. But building things feels good too, construction surveys. And there is plenty of new to see walking that line! Just like that old house. I sure wish I was out with y'all that day! Been away a long time and just lately I've become real homesick for the woods of my home ground, New York State. Great video! Thanks again.

      Unfortunately I’m unfamiliar with international licensing reciprocity. You should reach out to NCEES and speak with them about your options. I don’t know that they will have all the answers but it’s a good place to start. Each state in the US has different requirements so you may want to choose a state that favors some sort of reciprocity if possible.

      Well, as of two weeks ago, slide mountain, and Hunter Mountain both had nice snow conditions, especially slide. Maybe a foot or two at the top -nicely packed snow. Microspikes all the way. Hopefully we get some more accumulation before Winter ends. Like you, I consider day hikes as training hikes and don’t worry about the pack being light per se. I also carry a tarp as well as a sleeping quilt on all my winter outings as a safety measure. Additionally, I’ve been also bringing an extra base layer top which I change into at the summit for a warmer and drier descent.

    • @christiandenniston7177
      @christiandenniston7177 7 місяців тому

      Thank you! I’m not sure exactly how far I hang a bear bag haha, maybe a couple hundred feet or so? Usually it’s within view of the camp but just a comfortable distance away. A lot of it depends on trying to find a good tree branch to toss it over which is sometime surprisingly harder to find than one would think ha. For water I filter it all using a sawyer squeeze which is affordable and works well. I boil water for coffee and rehydrating food with my stove but it’s only for the purpose of heat not treating the water as it’s already been run through the filter.

    • @jwblaser
      @jwblaser 7 місяців тому

      I used a bear bag for about 45 years. If you are going to use a bear bag, use the "Triangle Method;" cook in one area, sleep in another and hang your bag in another. They should be at least 100 feet apart. A couple of years ago, I went to a bear canister. Although bulky and heavier than a bag, it eliminates the need to find a suitable tree to hang. I use a BearVault BV500 and get 7 days worth of food in it. I have a mesh bag that attaches to my Granite Gear Portage pack; the canister and an Ursack (for trash) go in their for the carries. This system has worked out well for me.

But the portage from deer pond to third lake is about 0.5 miles. Not a terrible portage but a good distance. However after that you’re free to explore 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th lake without getting out of the canoe. Just enough portaging to keep most people out haha! Thanks for the great video! I was part of an Adirondack Mountain Club work crew that built the portage from clamshell pond to turtle pond. This was back in the early 2000’s. We had to re-route the portage due to beaver flooding. I had a great time camping on slang pond.

      I didn’t notice it. I’ll take a look when I make it back there. Really hoping to revisit this year.

      You’re correct I should wear it more. And any trips where conditions are more ‘difficult’ I do always have it on. Wore it for my entire AWW trip and am so glad I did. But conditions there are much different than the oswegatchie.
