Same. Havent listened to much or bought Metallica. Though i have seen Until it Sleeps on a heroic dose ×3.
My bookshelfs are full of cd , I guess they are great reflectors😔
And what was before nothing?
Another interesting video. Is there a definitive source or discography for pressings and recordings? I want to be more selective with the vinyl or I might as well stream. The other week someone demonstrated mono pressing and a stereo of the same song and the mono was so alive and breathing air and whetess the the stereo recording played directly after was lifeless and did not bring the music alive. I would like to collect some Billy Joel and was wondering which particular pressings would be good to look out for? I was told not to just buy off Amazon etc but to be more selective of the particular recording and edition etc
Hi Charles. Discogs.com is a great source for identifying a pressing, and probably the best one out there at the moment. It's not 100% accurate but it will help identify a very high percentage of what is out there. You can search for Billy Joel and drill down on the various pressings (there will be A LOT with reissues and all over the years, so it can be overwhelming). Comments from users can also assist in identifying decent pressings.
It works great and has been used by many. If so many of the companies selling a 1/2 oz of stylus cleaner and brush for $25+ and being so greedy and ripping us off, in that they think audio and record entheuists will pay that because it is worth it are wrong. The texture of the magic eraser cleans the diamond tip, which by the way, is the hardest natural substance in the world. With the other stylus cleaning solutions, you never know if it will dissolve or loosen the bonding agent holding the stylus to the cantiliever. Look, I have a Signet stylus that I have used since 1987 in a hgih end system, and it still sounds, looks and performs flawlessly. And you do not have to clean the stylus evry time. Go 20+ hours between cleanings.............have used in broadcast and mastering operations.
You can put all the feet and platforms under your turntable, but nothing and I mean nothing, beats having your turntable in a separate room behind a closed door completely isolated from your speakers. When I finally arranged my system with total airborne and physical isolation, it was like many veils were lifted. If you don't try it, you'll never know.
Nice video I enjoyed. Now I'm going to move my speakers Thanks For sharing!!
Thanks, Paul!
I also have a few 78s in boxed sleeves like a book. Frank Sinatra.
I have an old Glen Miller set just like that - opens like a book as you said 🎶
Wifes aunt has all Beatles originals from the beginnings. I asked to look at them. She finally found them stacked in a box. I almost cried and im no collector. Just have commin sense. All of ours are in boxes upright and tight. I just know store upright and something keeping them vertical and not having a few leaning against the end of the stack.
I can only imagine how many great and priceless records are stored that way in attics that we'll never know about.
Glad you found your audio nirvana...Thanks for sharing.
Absolutely Rick, vibration is the number 1 enemy of vinyl replay. The best thing i ever did for my turntable was place it on a wall mounted shelf. Also, i placed my speakers on sprung supports and that was also amazing
Choosing the right 'speakers and how they interact with your room are WAY more important than upgrading the amp, assuming that you have an amp which can properly drive the speakers. The BIGGEST upgrade i ever made was positioning my speakers correctly in my room, and it was free. Bring speakers into the room and away from walls and let them breathe.
I'm with you on the speakers and giving them room to breathe. That's when I really heard them begin to open up in a balanced way.
Think I'm guilty of most of those too, except the coin on the tonearm, that's sacrilegious 😅
Awful isn't it? 😂😂😂
Thanks for a great review. For the difference in cost I am thinking of getting the original version as I only clean 12 inch and can do it in manual mode so I won’t have the benefit of the auto cycle but that’s ok. My only interest would be to get the nova if the cleaning results are significantly better than the original. Please could you let me know from that perspective if it’s better to invest in the Nova?
I'm glad you asked, Charles. I've had a few questions about the two models and the differences. I will be publishing a video comparing the two so folks can make an informed decision. I plan to have that completed in December and the video will be released on the channel shortly after.
great intro to some basics. you do want symmetry however. what’s super challenging is of course treating low frequencies but treating all the frequencies equally while reflecting back the higher to some degree is key, requiring deliberate know how. but this is more specific to mixing / mastering. like other person said it’s not super necessary for enjoyment and critical listening (depending on the speakers horizontal vertical dispersion pattern / design. i mix w three way coaxial speakers and they interact w the room less. theory on listening position is about 38% of room, measured from front wall. play with toe-in on / off axis of speakers, forming equilateral triangle. just good to know some foundational things to test out hearing stereo image. and you actually really want the tweeter at ear level if possible. this is real industry standard stuff; it’s not wacky woo boomerphile stuff ps lol.
😂😂😂 Made me laugh at the "wacky woo boomerphile stuff". Great information, too. Thank you 🍺
I have used a zero stat on and off since they came out in the 70's. Yup, that old. Anyway, they way we used them, and I still do it this way, is to hold the record in one hand, take the gun pointed away from the record and squeeze the trigger. Then, point the gun at 12 o'clock on the record, about 10 to 12 inches away, and slowley release the trigger. Then point it away from the record again, squeeze the trigger, then point it at the 4 o'clock position on the record. Repeat that one more time at the 8 o'clock position. Some folks do it the opposite, and squeeze the trigger while pointing at the record, and releasing while pointing away. I do what seems to work for me.
I'm glad you brought this up, Dennis. I plan to do a follow-up to a video a did a while ago about the Zerostat. Great little device. Thank you for the feedback!
With small why not try 2way tower speaker rather than bookshelf the sound more good and easy to find right placement with sound good.
13x16 bedroom here with 7.2.4 speakers. When listening to vinyl or CDs my speakers are Klipsch RP-600M2s and a pair of 12 subs set to auto so the only turn on when music gets below 40Hz. I'm constantly moving the speakers a few degrees or inches at a time and get some pretty decent sound. I could probably use something on my back wall besides framed photos.
I have those same Klipsch speakers in my review room. In the main listening room I drive Mandioe crazy by constantly adjusting the speakers and toe-in 😂😂😂😂
Thanks for a common sense approach to tackling this process without unnecessary anxiety
I appreciate that, John 🍺🎶
I'm a musician since the 70's and a record collector since I was a boy. Totally agree. I have bought about 20 180 Gram records and I have some artists and records on several formats including CD, Digital & Vinyl. The quality control on these 180 Gram records pretty much sucks a lot of the time. Warped, skipped, etc.
I experience the warps and bad quality control as well.
@@TheJoyofVinylRecords Quality Control is Poor. And it shouldn't be for the Price you're paying. I mean that's why you're buying it. For the Quality!
Anyone that says you have to spend big money to enjoy records is simply trying to justify what they themselves had probably spent. Of course you can get a great sub $1k turntable. I bought a used Technics tt for $200 and it sounds great
Well put! 🎶
I don't want any reverb at all, so a small room is preferable for me.
Great advice Thank You
Excellent advice. And I concur.. speaker placement for a beautiful big sound stage. Correct positioning of MLP for better perception (especially the bass) And room treatment to bring it all together. Yes, top-notch advice 🎉 I was going to buy Corner bass traps for my 13 x 11.5 ft living room. However, even though the two doors within my small room were replaced with curtain drapes. It was only when I took the punt and decided to doubled the curtains up that the resonance which was actually emanating from the corners had finally been curbed. After that experience, I'm thinking maybe absorbing the standing waves before they become a problem. Maybe time for measurements, I suppose
It's a constant trial and error experiment for us too. Little adjustments here and there and the sound changes
I agree, 180g records is a gimmick. Some of the best sounding records i have are way lighter than 180g
Nice but I need a repeat button.
Believe it or not, I have a pair of Magnepan's in a 10X12 ft room. They are the MC 1's. The smallest planar speakers Magnepan makes. I have a hidden small sub in the room. I love to see the expressions on peoples faces when they hear them. They just can not believe the "Wall of Sound" !
That's awesome!
I have a small room, 11 feet x 11 feet, and a very near listening position, with the speakers well away from back wall. This negates reflections. Best listening experience I've ever had.
I've really enjoyed the near field listening experience myself
@TheJoyofVinylRecords yeah, it's a game changer. Also, means you can run a lower power amp and small speakers which are great at imaging. The near field position means I don't have to run the amp as loud. So I run a 25w valve amp with Harbeth P3 speakers and it's magical
I'm just here because I bought a record off Ebay and a different one off Discogs. I just want to make sure they're real pressings is all. I'm always worried of getting a counterfeit one. I know it's probably not as common as my anxiety is telling me it is, but I paid a pretty penny for these, and I just want to have the comfort of knowing these are real, and for any other rare albums I'm planning on getting. Any help from the comments here?
Do you happen to have the etching numbers? They can be extremely difficult to see, but the more info on what's in the deadwax (numbers, notes, symbols) the better.
@@TheJoyofVinylRecords I see some. Should I type them out here?
@@thedoctorreileymtd4022 Either that or send me an email ion case there are questions.
Whoa, when did you start rocking that Transcend? I've had my Custom 2A3/45 for about a month now and I'm digging it. Aric is endgame!
I got it a little over a month ago! Actually posting a video about it this weekend! Aric is an audio wizard.
@@TheJoyofVinylRecords Looking forward to it!
Where did you get that shelf that your equipment is on ?
Hi David. The turntable is on a wall shelf from Pangea Audio. The rest sit on a cabinet we had custom made in Maine for records and equipment.
You think you have a small room. My room is small AND I have a 6 foot ceiling. Beat that!
Lol - you win!
The source material is so important. With good records you can have a really good experience with inexpensive gear!
Agreed!
My dad has an old receiver with a Loud button. Love it. Sounds great. I push it every time 😂
🍺🍺🍺
I have been contemplating getting a gun, thne ran into debates over newer vs old manufactured ones. In the meantime I experimented with the ronk plasma lighter. I can say that i noticed a decline in static using the lighter. Has anyone been able to compare the two methods?
There have been a few folks who have recommended the lighter method. I have yet to try it and it would be a great comparison to test.
If it shreds aluminum like that, how is it safe for vinyl records?
Hi! It is safe - it's a common test. You could hold aluminum like that up to a strong wind and it would rip. It's a decent test to see if the cavitation bubbles actually do anything or are just bubbling. I've seen Fremer do something similar with an aluminum wrapped record but didn't see the need to go that far for my humble test.
Here in the UK, we proudly lay claim to the smallest houses of all the major countries-yes, even tinier than Japan's famously compact spaces. So naturally, when it comes to sound systems, we’ve adapted. We use what we call “extremely near-field speakers” with a cutting-edge listening range of...less than 1 cm. You might know them by their common name: "headphones."
Perfect 🤣🤣🤣
@@TheJoyofVinylRecords on a serious note I do like your points about more natural room treatment. Books, lots of books helps :) Even in a tiny room.
The reality is that with an Audio Technica Bluetooth turn table, connected to your usual home cinema setup to get started will get you enjoying vinyl. Eventually you can get some nice powered speakers or amp and speakers and you are pretty much set.
Excellent point!
it's much easier to accomplish great sound quality in a smaller room. This video could be the first one in a series, there is so much to talk about!
Always open to suggestions too! I know this will be a continuing saga. My goal is to do it without spending much money and bring my experience back for folks to try.
this guy seems like your girlfriends chill dad lol
🤣
Everybody knows that the umlaut is for Spinal Tap -- but my Mac (or UA-cam) won't allow me to place it where they do, inappropriately over the "n."
I have a converted laundry room for all my audio currently. It's a tight spot. About 5' × 8' of space with a 9 foot ceiling. No windows. I have a 4x4 and 2x4 IKEA Kallax. I have a leather chair. I have too.many records which are on the floor and not on shelves. I've been trying for years to get this thing right. Mostly I use my headphones.
It's a constant journey isn't it?
I use the same three ingredients but less IPA since i use an ultrasonic system. I have read about the flashpoint of IPA so I adhere to those guidelines. Good information here and im always willing to learn.
I learn something new every day, Michael. Cheers!
Records are made of polyvinyl chloride. Does isopropyl alcohol damage the plastic bottles it's sold in? Alcohol can help loosen or dissolve sticky contaminants (traces of packaging glues, peanut butter and jelly fingerprints) that sometimes get onto the surface and into the grooves of a record. It works. (I use a drop or two of surfactant [Triton X-100 or a custom GrooveWasher concentrate solution], and sometimes a dash of 99 percent IPA in a gallon of distilled warm water, using a 40 khz ultrasonic jewelry cleaning machine with a revolving spindle designed specifically for LPs.) If you used only pure distilled water, there's no "wetting agent" to break the surface tension so the ultrasonic treatment doesn't do what it's supposed to do. If only more people would take a few minutes to do some comparative research before jumping to their conclusions... Thanks for being conscientious!
Great video, really informative, thank you. I've been using the exact same formulation (thanks London Jazz Collector) for the best part of a decade, and my records, whether second had or new, have always sounded better for it 🙂
Great minds think alike, Karl!
Becca, I follow you because you think through these issues. Thank you so much!
Wow, I guess I haven't checked in with you for a while. That gear looks all new to me. Are those mono-blocks partially visible over at the far right? Cool! Like you, I converted a small back bedroom (roughly 11' x 11') into a dedicated "media room" full of LPs, CDs, books, DVDs/Blu-Rays and about 25 pieces of vintage audio equipment (including a 1959-71 Dynakit ST-70, a 1977 Yamaha CR-2020, a 1972 MAC 1900, various turntables and tape decks, and an new-ish Marantz AV receiver) -- with a 65" OLED HDTV on one wall and stacks of speakers (from large Advents to KEF R350s) slightly out from that wall on either side of the screen. The other three sides of the room are nearly floor-to-ceiling LP shelves, and there's one 4' window (with venetian blinds) that hints at the existence of an Outside World. There's a 4' x 6' retro paisley area rug on the already carpeted floor, partially under a pair of fake leather reclining theater seats. Yeah, that's all crammed into one little room. All those 12" - 14" deep shelves make a tiny space feel even smaller (more like 8' wide) -- but the good thing is that the furniture and the records act as a kind of low-tech practical "acoustic treatment!" And it doesn't take much volume to totally fill the room with sound (subwoofer in the back corner, behind the seats). Also: Ceiling fan! I only run one switchable amp/receiver at a time, of course...
It sounds like a great room! Would you believe that those two units aren't mono-blocks but are the phono stage? It's made by Aric Audio (aricaudio.com/super-mm-phono/). One is the power supply with tuber rectifiers, and the other handles the RIAA correction with two 12ax7s and a 12au7 for the output to the amp.
Been to high end audio showns and the small rooms sounded surprisingly good. Only once I found a room weird sounding. What also interests me is that the set up of the speakers was usually towards the long wall (shortest distance speaker to listener).
It's great proof that small rooms can work 🎶
golden words! I like your opinion ❤
