The BEST First Dungeon in Final Fantasy
Part 5. Playing through the original Final Fantasy for the NES with all the bugs and all the original everything. Playing on the NES Classic Edition.
Today we take on the dreaded MARSH CAVE, the Ender of FF1 Runs. A lot of experience players agree that the game jumps in difficulty at this point. But we have a trick up our sleeve... my terrible memory! But even with all that, It's a well designed first dungeon.
How far did you get in this game the first time? What part did you find the hardest? Let's chat about it in the comments below?

    The *invisible* fighter died. XD The Marsh Cave is def the first real grind in this game. It will destroy you if you are not prepared (pro tip: get a map, lol). HARM is a very useful spell, but it eats through your ability to heal. Funny how those wizards never use spells. They just punch you into submission. "I cast fist!"

    Rapier for the fighters to start, then save your money till pirate town, then buy a sh. Sword. Save like crazy and buy a silver sword asap and give to a fighter, saves so much time early on, red mages can use the silver sword too. Fire vs creeps, ice vs ogre, lit vs sharks etc. take the ship to first town to use that inn. Go to dwarven cave to get some early chests and cash.

      Don't forget about the ruins where you fought Garland, there's two swords in there that sell for a good bit of cash after you get the Mystic Key which will give you a chunk of money towards that Steel/Knight's Armor in Melmond. They're not as good as the Silver/Mythril swords you've been using, and in the NES version, the properties they were supposed to have don't function so it's OK to just sell them.

      I always went with 2 fighters, a bb and a white mage... and not only did I grind for the 2 swords (the ones sold in the town for what was that again, 4k?) but also, two steel armors in that ruined town before the earth cave. That door that's locked by the Key in this video? Has the perfect money grinding spot,a forced battle tile in front of the middle chest. The White Mage's harm spells make quick work of the enemies there. Use up your magic, go back and stay at the inn, return and keep doing that, you'll get the money (and several levelups!) in no time.

    The neutrino musing reminds me of the first batch of machines from the US Dreamcast launch. They opted not to ground the input on the MIDI chip since the console didn't use the microphone. This caused the chip to pick up random background radiation and convert it into the ocassional input signal causing the machines to crash while playing certain games, most notably Ready 2 Rumble. (It was easier to patch the games than recall all the units.)

    On game bugs, one of the sad parts is that the specialty swords you get later, like the flame sword and ice sword, don't correctly apply their bonuses versus enemies weak to them. Thus they don't really do any significant more damage than usual.

      @pigs18 27 днів тому

      And all the weapons are numbered in the lookup table. When it checks for critical hit percentage it pulls the weapon number instead. So the first weapon has a 1% critical hit rate and the Masamune, being in the last slot, gets a critical hit on nearly every single attack.

  • @MagicIsaacSage
    @MagicIsaacSage Місяць тому

    About the only real thing that keeps me from replaying the NES version on an emulator is the targeting interface not switching your target if you got an unplanned critical or miscalculated the remaining hp on your target. The overall speed of the game keeps me from going back to it on real hardware. Dawn of Souls on the GBA was imo, the best version of FF1.

    Honestly the shopping interface is the worst part of the game. The shop music is great thankfully, but man, being unable to buy multiple items at a time is so tedious. On top of that the game doesn't indicate who can equip what within it. I think (emphasis on think) that the manual had a reference for the things you can buy but that of course adds multiple steps that none of the later games required. I suspect later ports removed all of these inconveniences.

    I have played Final Fantasy - emulated NES-version, PS1-port and Pixel Remaster and latter two are practically the same. It is no wonder it became such a huge success as it is just great game for first entry - so much freedom of action (once ship and canoe have been gained) and party configurations. My lesson of party: Thief is useless and Red Mage's versatility gets less useful over time, but it can have most potent offensive spell: FAST. My personal angle says there must be one class capable of using black magic (Red or Black Mage) and White Mage is MANDATORY. Rest are physical attackers. Current playthrough on my channel uses Fighter, Black Belt, Black Mage and White Mage as party. Late-game items add versatility big time.

      @dionelr Artistically all versions of FF1 have disappointing (even with then-standards) final dungeon being just so EMPTY linear slog with nothing interesting. There are 5 overworld hearts and 8 dungeon hearts. And you start with 3. You can pick up 3 of 5 overworld hearts before entering any dungeon. In the 2nd quest I think you can only pick up 2 overworld hearts before any dungeon.

    The question of how many hearts you need for the Magical Sword came up in my run too. I was not worthy on the first try. XD

    Fun to watch you run through Zelda, and yeah, I also adore the decor of the level 5 dungeon. I think in terms of canon that the original Zelda is probably best thought of as its own thing. Its manual artwork is unique and the best that’s come out of the series, I think.

    Hi there! Thanks for watching the video. How do you think Zelda 1 fits into the Zelda lore? Is it a problem that there's no Master sword? Does it matter? Sound off below.

      In terms of writing Legend of Zelda is the genesis - the archetype that others follow and expand upon. It has it's own sequel (Adventure of Link) that does exactly that. Personally I feel that all Zelda-games are basically alternate realities which have only tenuous connection and so different rules that Ganon of one world is absolutely powerless in another if he could even survive the transition. Magical Sword is exactly that and as other magical swords and weapons would appear in series there would be indicator that magical sword used by Link is something special and thus Sword of Evil's Bane appeared - truly powerful weapon meant to one, specific task and user. Funnily enough Ganon's true weakness in this is NOT Magical Sword, but Silver Arrow instead. Of course some Zelda-games have explicit connection with each other like Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask did as do Breath of The Wild and Tears of The Kingdom have.

    Hey Dio. OG Zelda nice. I tried one of Beastman’s randomizer but my save file got damaged or something and I lost my spot. Will have to revisit another time ❣️✌🏼

      @@dionelr I was having fun. And was disappointed the file was lost. But yeah it definitely makes the game new again. And the one that Peter is playing now. Not sure I would have gone as far as he has.
