    There are a bunch of free variable fonts you can search on google fonts by filtering for 'Variable' under the 'Technology' sub-menu, and it'll tell you how many parameters you can adjust. You can preview them and play with the sliders. Most have just weight and width, but there are some with pretty dramatic variability. You just need to make sure that when you add them to your font folder that you only add the variable versions of the fonts, otherwise they may be deleted as a duplicate, or, if the variable and non-variable versions are in the same parent folder for the font, they won't show up when you filter for variable fonts. You might already have some more variable fonts hidden within parent folders.

    They say fairly priced perpetual license because owners of Adobe's CS software along with others know that when Adobe switched over to the subscription model the perpetual licensees we're still out there but 1) You had to scavenger hunt for it because it was no longer easy to find and then 2) When you did find it the prices for the Perpetual copies were skyrocketed sky high. Very blatantly, very obviously to make people that wanted to use Adobe have to get the subscription plan if they wanted a reasonable price.

      Let us prey they don't go the same way as Adobe. I don't believe they have anywhere near the market share to pull such a trick.

      @@netspacearts3301 My absolutely real concern is Canva will switch to subscription which was THE reason I switched from Adobe. I hope, but it is only a hope, that Canva will improve features, make it more accessible not just via schools etc but also UI/UX. Serif was very generous with their licencing. Even though I am not a major user I like fostering competition so I bought the bundle with licence for macOS, Windows and iOS. One thing that could be a huge benefit is creating a huge market for templates and artwork created in Affinity Apps.

      @@netspacearts3301 In my opinion Affinity as a suite of programs still is no competition to Adobe because they lack video, motion graphics and audio apps. If they at least had a video editor then that would go a long way to make them more attractive than Adobe and their Premiere Pro. Many of us use the graphics programs in conjunction with our video program.

    It certainly doesn't make graphics that would make me trust a company or their products. I do agree that getting stock photos of groups of people, they're never a family. Most of the stock photos people use in their ad campaigns are "young edgy" types, as if people under 23 years of age are the only people who buy products.

    Subscription sucks for the users, period. What they could do, and some 3D apps have done for years is tiered pricing. You make over 100k commercially and you pay more. Related is maintenance plans which could also be tiered, if you want updates pay a reduced price each year for all the updates or don't and no updates and pay full price each major release. The difference between maint. and sub is one allows you to keep using the tools you've paid for and by extension have access to your own IP, the other doesn't. I've enjoyed having powerful and mostly polished tools for very little cost, but I challenge anyone to say the Affinity Suite isn't underpriced. With how the Affinity Suite is priced now, they could have a very low cost maintenance plan, making it affordable for even hobbyists, and still greatly increase their revenue to invest in development.

    • @netspacearts3301
      @netspacearts3301 3 місяці тому

      Absolutely. I went to Affinity to avoid the sub model and as a hobbyist, managed to build enough skills to acquire employment in a new field. Sad times my friend. I really hope they always allow a one off payment, but time will tell.

    How do you convert text boxes for pages that are created from a master page?

    • @netspacearts3301
      @netspacearts3301 6 місяців тому

      I may have what you are asking wrong, but I will try to answer your question as I read it. If you are trying to use the master page as a basis for creating a variant of an object like a text box. As in, you want to modify something in the master page for use on a page, I would suggest opening the master page and copying the asset you want, go to the page and paste it then modify. Then open the layers panel and hide the master page from that page, or right click on the page in the pages panel and select 'clear masters'. If you still want to use master pages but some variation on pages, I'd suggest copying the assets you want and making a new master page, then apply it to the page you like. Hope this helps!

    hey! Any idea why hyperlinks to emails aren't working? (I'm on a Mac BTW). When I select a text (inside a text field) and right-click -> interactive -> insert hyperlink, it works fine when I choose either "Page" or "URL", and when I've inserted either of the two, it takes you to either the page in the document, or opens Safari up and takes you to the URL's page, when I then right click -> "Go to hyperlink target" All good until here. BUT, when I've selected "Email" as the hyperlink type, and I've inserted an email address as the hyperlink, when I then right-click and select "Go to hyperlink target" , not only does it not open the Mail app or even safari to send the email, but the "Go to hyperlink target" button is greyed out! Am I doing something wrong, or does hyperlinking email addresses in AP just not work? Last, is there a way to hyperlink a phone number? (So that the phone number's link will maybe open up a FaceTime app or something on your Mac or PC (or just the phone app to make a regular call if you click on the link from a phone?

  • @nounix
    @nounix 9 місяців тому

    Hi again.. :P Thank you so much for your previous reply!! :) :) Maybe you can help/advise on this?... 🙏🙏: I'm having REAL trouble with some hyperlinks that just won't work the way I need them to... Maybe you can help 'cause I must be doing something wrong and I am wasting SOO much time trying to figure out what's going on that I've nearly given up.... Your answer may be really brief (but my question is quite long :( :( as I need to explain what's going on...). I have a 64-page document. Pages 1 and 2 are just the cover page, and the TOC page. Then pages 3 to 38 are "Section 1", pages 39 to 57 "Section 2" and pages 58 to 64 are "Section 3". What I need is to have: a) A hyperlink "button" on ALL pages (3 to 64) that says "Jump back to TOC" and when clicked on you are taken back to the TOC (page 2), This is done! :) b) A hyperlink button on all pages of "Section 1", apart from its first page (so on pages 4 to 38), that says "Jump back to Section start", and when click on will take you to the start of “Section 1” (page 3). This is also done! :) c) A hyperlink button on all pages of "Section 2", apart from its first page (so on pages 40 to 57), that says "Jump back to Section start", and when click on will take you to “Section 2” (page 39). This has failed. d) A hyperlink button on all pages of "Section 3", apart from its first page (so on pages 4 to 38), that says "Jump back to Section start", and when click on will take you to “Section 3” (page 58). This will also fail since "c" doesn't work... To do this I have made a total of 4 master pages to apply throughout the document. One hyperlink "button" on the first master page to take you back to the TOC page, on all pages, And 3 hyperlink buttons, each on the next 3 master pages, each taking you back to the starting page of the corresponding Section, of the 3 in total in the document. So, 1) The first master page has the text "Jump back to TOC" that I've hyperlinked to the TOC page (page 2 ). I then have applied this master page to all the following pages of the document (pages 3 to 64) so that all these pages have this "button". This works! All the buttons take you back to the TOC page (page 2)! :) 2) The next master page has the text "Jump back to start of section" that I've hyperlinked to the first page of "Section 1" (page 3). I then applied this master page to all the following pages of the document (pages 4 to 38). This also works! All the buttons on pages 4 to 38 take you back to the start of this Section (page 3)! : **From here on, start the problems... :( :( :( I don’t seem to be able to create the same "Jump back to start of section" hyperlinks for “Section 2” and for “Section 3”, on the next 2 master pages... :( What I did was: 1) Create a new master page (the 3rd master page) 2) From the previous master page (the 2nd), I copied the (already) hyperlinked text "Jump back to start of section" (which included the hyperlink to page 3). 3) Pasted this text group to the new (3rd) master page - so that it's positioned at the same exact location on this master page, with same font and size, as it was on the previous master page. 4) Right-clicked on this pasted, hyperlinked with the previous target page (3), text and EDITED the existing hyperlink (to go to new target page (page 39, this time)). 5) It failed. The newly edited hyperlink text, on the new master page, does NOT take you to page 39 as I have edited it to, but instead takes you AGAIN to page 3!… So I obv can’t apply this new hyperlinked text (to go to page 39) from the new master page, onto pages 40 to 57, since AP just doesn’t “want” to change the hyperlink page target! It’s like the original hyperlink (to page 3) just can’t be edited to point to a different page than it was originally made to take you to… :( :( What do I have to do to make it work??

    • @nounix
      @nounix 9 місяців тому

      Never mind my question! ;) I found the solution!! How %$#% stupid of Affinity to make this so unnecessarily complicated and hidden.... What I was doing "wrong" (it should have worked this way too, though...) is that I was right-clicking on the text FIELD that had the "Jump back to start of section" text (that was already hyperlinked from the previous master page). Nothing would, then, happen when I would select either Delete or Edit Hyperlink command. What I "had" to, instead, do is to double-click on the text field to "enter" it, then CMD+A to select/highlight all the TEXT, and THEN right-click and either Edit or Delete Hyperlink! Now the new hyperlink that takes you to the new page works!! :) :) HOW ANNOYING to have wasted SO much time to figure this out, when all Affinity had to do was to simply allow the hyperlink's editing, or its deletion, when the text field was simply selected... I mean it makes no sense for this not to be happening when the Delete (or Edit) Hyperlink option IS available in the drop-down menu I when the text field is selected... If it does nothing then what's it there for??? Anyway, I got it to FINALLY work ;)

    • @netspacearts3301
      @netspacearts3301 Рік тому

      Good questions! As far as I can see, the assets do not effect performance since they are not actually open in the application (imo it might improve performance overall since you would not be opening large files to open clipart, textures etc). It appears to create a library file called assets.propcol in the c: user folders: user / (username) / .affinity / common / 2.0 / user - Although you cannot use that library file except in Affinity. My assets file is about 1.9GB so it appears to make a copy in that directory and I would imagine the paper textures I also have would be large files whereas my clipart in the video are not large. Hope this helps!

    Nice, but can’t you just configure the wrapping settings on the image, rather than adjusting the text box?

      Thanks Kurt yeah I figured this out a bit after this vid...I may make an updated video with this better method for sure. Affinity is so amazing that there seems to be multiple ways to do everything. Appreciate the comment.

      I actually have a later video showing pretty much what you describe. I have found sometimes I require a more static shape text boxes especially if using larger fonts, but the image wrapping text boxes is better in most situations for sure.

    Nice video. You can create a master page with your watermark. Then you can apply it to any page you like and remove it anytime you like.
