This ensemble is standard instrumentation and can be called either Woodwind Quintet or Wind Quintet. It comes from the classical period when there wasn't really a distinction between brass and woodwind instruments as there is today. Historically, horns have played together with woodwinds because their timbre blends nicely.

@ I’ll be joining the high school next year, so I’ll get to be in both there and also I might be getting a soprano for my birthday, so we might be able to do a quartet. Idk tho the high school director is rly strict

@ I played concert last year (I play clarinet and tenor btw) and I play jazz this year. I want to learn soprano and play in jazz, concert, and marching band with a combo of all three instruments. Does your high school start in 9th grade? Mine does and I’m in 8th this year. Do you play any other instruments?

@@The_Cosmic_Clarinet well I play alto and tenor, but once you learn one I guess you learn them all, and I’m in 8th, our high school starts in 9th unfortunately. But I am so excited. Also I do play a little trumpet but not very well lol. I’m a Zelda fan, so I also play the ocarina and my grandfather started learning the Irish tin whistle, which is basically a little flute. On an unrelated note, do you get into any honor bands, district, or all state bands?

@ I’m assuming you’ve watched that army band saxophone video where some guys went to see a person with a massive selection of saxes He had some that were really wierd like just contrabass, sub contrabass, and then he had stuff like a alto without and valves or keys, a slide soprano, and a sax tuned in F

I find the ones who do it best make it so that when you look at it on the page, it seems like a horrible clash, but when played, the context makes it make sense. It is a clash but goes perfectly with the direction of each instrument’s melodic line.

They are! However, they play in woodwind quintets because of the nice way that the warm timbre of the horn interacts with those instruments!

Well that's interesting, I had never noticed. The printed score is the source material, and that's what is accurate. The recording is more than twenty years old, and probably got pitch-shifted at some point, perhaps as a result of changing the sample rate or converting from analog to digital. I loved that piece when I discovered it in college. It definitely influenced this one.

@@sigmasquaredmusic haha, well little did you know, that is JeanJean! Took me 2 years to find the piece, trying to remember the french title. I've seen so many pictures of french villages that I became an architect before I finally found the piece.
