Hi, my name is Sarah! I was diagnosed with multiple autoimmune diseases in my 20s but kept speeding onward, determined that nothing would change about my lifestyle. After fifteen years of perfectionism, I hit a wall and realized I needed to make serious changes in how I treated myself. I began correcting my mindset around productivity, particularly as it pertains to house-care tasks. That work transformed my life and became the Adaptive Cleaning system. I now advocate for those of us with chronic physical and mental health conditions via video and written content, as well as digital products.
Cleaning my depression room
I've been in such a funk. There is so much to do, but because I don't have the physical or mental capacity, I've been in a deep executive dysfunction. Today is the day, though, to re-engage with life and do an action step.

Working from home with 5 kids is...challenging
Переглядів 427Місяць тому
I’ve been so anxious lately. I was talking to a friend the other day about how parenting feels like giving all you’ve got but constantly feeling like it’s not enough. If you add in working, it’s the same sensation, but twice. Learning to be content with what I CAN do versus what I WANT to do is so difficult. Everything feels crucial- what my kids need from me, finances, mental health, my work. ...

No matter how often I attempted to get to a "clean slate" in my home, I invariably ended up frustrated and overwhelmed. In this video, I’m going to share shame-free tips that allow you to make changes in a sustainable way. Whether you’re juggling a busy schedule...

You have a legit reason to NOT want to declutter. Now what? I always wanted to live in a less chaotic space, but I had legitimate reasons for being anxious about decluttering. Getting mad at myself didn’t help me declutter. Trying to hype myself up to declutter EVERY SINGLE ITEM I didn’t need/want didn’t work either. The only thing that has helped me is to: 1. Understand and validate why declut...

Simplify Kitchen Cleaning With These Easy Ideas!

Having a clean kitchen is my one cleaning non-negotiable, because coming down to a messy kitchen makes me want to turn on my heel and get back in bed. If I do little pockets of cleaning here and there, it is a true kindness to future Sarah, who is undoubtedly ready to put on jammy jams and get in bed. If you're out of the house most of the day, this may only work on the weekends. Or, you may fi...

Gj ! big ups ! P.s. Extra screw always left over for me to :D
Just found your channel today and I am off work and my closet is a hot mess. Getting some motivation from this to go try to make a start!!
I'm so glad! Doing a little at a time has been so huge for me, since I am limited on time and energy. I hope that strategy helps you too!
Thank you for the positive energy and the connections you bring! There's a book called "Complex PTSD From Surviving To Thriving" by Pete Walker, and a podcast called "Ankylosing Spondylitis Natural Healing." After healing from 20 years of AS I can say that these people are the genuine article. <3
Thank you so much for the information and encouragement! I'll have to check out the book!
This video is so helpful for me. Thank you!
I'm so glad!
👍👍👍👌🫡🌟🌟🦸♀️
Thank you!!! Thats kind of video i was looking for - without music or talks, with background noise
I love just background noise too! It's hard for me to capture it with all the kids I have, but I keep trying!
I had lost about 25 pounds over the last year, and it’s all I really needed to lose. Because I am so overwhelmed, depressed, and can barely find a clear spot to do Pilates (or anything else), I’ve gained it all back the last few months.
I hope you're able to gather enough items that can be donated that you're able to get a spot for yourself to exercise. You deserve it, my friend!
Decision fatigue! I am so happy to have stumbled onto this video, and just want to thank you. My situation is bad. Through grief and loss (along with ADD), I’ve allowed my home to become about a level three hoard. But what you said that really resonated with me is regarding clothes. I have an endless access to free designer clothes. I’m a part of an organization that actually has a boutique, which is insane. So I have all of these gorgeous clothes, jewelry, bags, and even cosmetics (a separate connection), many of which have never been worn or used. Because I have very little income, I need to sell them, but I’m so disorganized. I have no storage and the clothing racks I have are horrible. I am looking at a kitchen that is cluttered from floor to ceiling, and I can’t seem to make a dent. And I know, when I go upstairs to my bedroom, it’s twice as bad. I sleep in a bed with 100 things on top of it, and my dresser is unspeakable. Some woman wanted to charge me $1000 just to organize my bedroom. That kind of puts it into perspective.
Sometimes, there's a perfect storm where chaos just seems to take over! I've experienced it multiple times. I'm so sorry you've been going through such a difficult time. I know you can reclaim your spaces, and I hope you're able to take your time and be compassionate with yourself. Hugs to you!
I had a hell of a problem with my hoover washing machine fitting a new door seal . Never again 😢
Hi Sarah, the small stiff-bristled brushes from Amazon that you mentioned, which ones are they? I'm looking for some. Thanks for what you are doing here! The reframing is really giving me hope.
I'm so glad the reframing is helping! It's changed so much for me. The brushes are these from Amazon: amzn.to/3VsMY0L
You go girlfriend. Makes me proud of sisterhood.
I love that I'm not the only Mama who gets tired walking up the dang stairs! Makes me realise I need to halve my 'to do' list
You're definitely not alone in that! Yes, a smaller list that can actually be completed helps so much mentally, for me!
So I’m gonna be completely honest. I bought my washer used recently, so when I took the seal off I began gagging it was SO bad! Definitely in my top 5 most disgusting projects because it wasn’t my dirt. But I wanted to first of all say thank you bc this video really helps. Also I was struggling with the needle nose so I grab 2 tiny flat heads (like the ones for glasses) & just kind of angled them on the silver rings & it was so much easier. I also HAD to use bleach on mine because the grossness was just stuck. Also the little hose was packed with (gagging) what I can only explain looked like poop🤮it takes a lot to make me sick & this definitely did. Thank you again!
Holy cow Girl you are Gutsy and Brave!! # powerwomen !! I’ve never taken it apart but “scrub” it the best I can. It’s so difficult getting into the rubber gasket. I Never have thought of taking it apart and off. Well done. I’d love to try it but I don’t have a lot of strength in my hands so I’m nervous I’d not be able to do it. Plus I’d be too nervous to even try. lol. Ugh now I feel I need to knowing how much cleaner I can get it by taking it apart.
Wow! That does look like a ton of work! If I have a replacement product and am relatively handy, how long would this typically take?
hello, which model was this? seems so much easier to access the inner wire than on my own. thanks
Please type in The Homeschool app you are using. I didn't know how spell it and i can't find it. Thank you
I was just talking to my therapist on why I have left that corner that seems to look at me everyday and I can't get to it. Then I tell him myself that it's because I have a thousand other things that pop up and I can't get to the stupid corner. Thank you
Of course!
Great video. I have been wanting to do this for several years, but didn't know what to expect. Watching the video assured me I could knock this out in an afternoon. The spring retainers are not as hard as I thought. You just have to be strong enough to expand the spring and need a second set of hands to hold it in place while putting it back on. Thanks for taking the time to create the video.
Well done!!
This was so helpful! I love the way you explained how you were feeling, and I also like how you had to force yourself to stop and eat lunch, even though you were feeling good and had the momentum to keep going. Been there, done that! 😋 I’m sure it was also helpful to add the extra layer of accountability by filming yourself. And BONUS, you get to see your “before and after” progress when you’re done! Thanks so much for sharing your videos and being honest about your real, unfiltered life. 🥰
Yes! So many times I get excited when I finally feel a bit better and then end up wayyy overdoing it. I agree- filming is great accountability, but the community is amazing accountability too. I figure there's someone else feeling like me, so we can do it together! I appreciate you and your encouragement!
Hi, can you help me get my adaptive cleaning download? I haven’t received my email with a link or next steps, just my PayPal receipt. Thanks ❤
Hi Valerie! I emailed and messaged you on Facebook. Email me at sarah@adaptive-living.com if you haven't seen anything in your junk email. Can't wait to figure this out so you can get started!
Amen to the ‘hopeful euphoria’! Quickest way back down to the pit of despair 😝
You're so right!
Hey I am wondering how often should that be done?
I don't think this should ever have to be done twice, because it's such a pain. Once I had cleaned it all, I had to change the way I did laundry. I wiped out the rubber gasket every time I finished a load of laundry and brought in a little fan to point at the open door so it totally dried. Wayyyy too much work for a washer, but I just didn't want to repeat the gasket removal!
Those are real and valid reasons.
@@tealorturquoise thank you!! I agree 🥰
I can't even tell you how much this video helped me today. From one chronically ill ADHDer to another, thank you so much! 🥰
I'm SO glad! We have special circumstances, and I love creating and using tools that help in real life. Hugs!
The BEST parts of motherhood! 🥹🥰 I absolutely love doing this kind of thing with my daughter!
I love that feeling of total connection and joy!
I think u did that entire video all whilst plugged in. 220V Awesome! Not gonna rewatch to confirm slmk!
Wouldn't that have been hilarious! Nope, in fact, there's a shot showing me unplug...
You're rocking this, Mommy!!😁
@@SAC-j4m You’re adorable😘
This is a project I could start and never finish. What a PIA. I Wonder if appliance service companies would come out and do this?
These. Words! These are the words on decluttering that I needed but have never heard. I obsessively watch/listen to decluttering and minimalist content knowing it’s mostly aspirational for me - often far from my ability to execute, just adding to my feelings of discouragement and frustration (with myself.) I too feel the fear of scarcity and live thinking of the “what ifs” and therefore hold onto things that are not useful to me in the present. Your honest and compassionate words were just what I needed today! TY! ❤
I'm so glad to hear that!! I spent yearssss trying to intake enough aspirational content that it would become an inspiration. But facing the fact that my body/mind just doesn't work like that has been so helpful. I am far more effective when I'm realistic!
Hi Sarah, I am now 75 and just can’t keep up anymore with cleaning, cooking and taking care of everything that needs to be done. I appreciate your suggestions and hope to learn how to deal with things at my age and not feel bad about not being able to do the things I could do when I was younger. I’m trying my best to declutter my home and keep it looking neat. It’s challenging so I look forward to learning your system. Thank you for helping me feel hopeful!
It's so hard to change what you expect of yourself. I was diagnosed with several autoimmune diseases in my late 20s, and it took me over a decade to realize I didn't have to be ashamed that I couldn't be as productive. I hope that you can transition to being so proud of what you're doing and compassionate about what you can't do. Decluttering has helped me a ton because there isn't as much to caretake when you have less belongings. I have a Home Reset guide on my shop, but also a free playlist of 30 days of videos on my UA-cam page. The first part is about catching up on essentials, like laundry, dishes, bathrooms. But later, I work on decluttering. Sometimes it helps to have direction and company whilst doing tasks like decluttering! Feel free to email me if you ever need anything or have questions! sarah@adaptive-living.com
Thank you so much for showing how to remove the brush head …

Sarah, I want to thank you for showing me how to put that wire gasket on. I found your screw placement. You needed to unscrew the last 2 two screws in your video and remove the cover and you will see that a screw is needed to attach the last part of your washing machine before you screw in your last two screws. You did a wonderful job. I just didn’t want you to think that you were having a senior moment. 😉
Dang, I think this is me, too. Glad I'm not alone.
You're definitely not alone!
Thank you!
You're welcome Yvette!
What about the area that was still dirty when you put the screws back in?
There is staining on this toilet that I can't get off.
You are doing an excellent job Sarah. Countless loving seeds going into the heart of your children… if we don’t faint and lose sight, we will reap a beautiful harvest! I love you precious. 🦋

Ok, found you through the Minimal Mom podcast, didn’t even finish watching it and headed over to your channel. This was my first video….I’m thinking, where have you been this whole time?? I get sicker and sicker and my caretaking for many is outside of my house so the drain is real. Thanks for REAL solutions that resonate! I’ve always struggled (ADD dx @ 25 y.o.), but perimenopause and 4.5 years of shingles on top of lupus that all came together in March of 2020 really changed things. 5 surgeries and subsequent recovery caretaking among 3 women we care for in our family within 8 months this year almost took me out. I’m starting to see some hope in my health, so this is right on time instead of the shame spiral I’ve been on. 🎉 🙌 ❤
I'm so glad you're here! Wow, you've had a lot on your plate. I'm so glad that you're seeing hope for your health! I'm post-menopause, and wow, it changes everything! I hope you're able to kick shame out. I lived with it for so long and it makes life so dreary.
