Elvis Presley: The SUN Sessions - what was recorded
A look at what was recorded, where did the song come from and what do we have today. I am trying out new editing elements so please be patient! Regarding the claim that Elvis copied Jim Sweeney’s singing style after hearing his demo of Without You, I point out that months BEFORE this Elvis had recorded two acetates using this same style of singing.

What wonderful collection
Thanks James, welcome to the channel!
Hi from Latvia! Actually I am from Finland but the last 25 years in here! Thank you for presenting not only This great album, but as well 'Suomi' on your t-shirt! Yes part of my past as well. I have only two lp's From E I M; the original American stereo version and FTD(my only ftd). Yes nice album indeed! Cheers! Marko
Terve Marko! Thanks for the comment on a great album. I spent three years in Helsinki and loved it there! TCB
Excellent really enjoyed that well done you
I agree 100% with you on Elvis' dialogue being just a mis-memory. Just as Elvis once said in '69 one of the first records he ever recorded he had three instruments a guitar and two shaky legs and then preceded with Mystery Train combined with Tigerman. People take this as him meaning Tigerman also as one of his first records. He just added it in like he did with Hey Jude/Little Sister just being a little medley of two songs that sounded good together to him.
Hi Steve. You are the first one to actually get the story right. It's amazing how many still believe Elvis made that first acetate for his mother's birthday. In fact Ed Leek who found the record years later said Elvis just left it at his house and never took it home where his mother couldn't even heard it. You have one of the Best Elvis Presley Channels and I love watching your videos. God Bless my friend.
Thank you for your kind words.
Hope you are doing fine Steve. Been bussy reviving my Elvis channel after years of neglect. You might want to take a look: ua-cam.com/video/S14pPWPS3W8/v-deo.htmlsi=LAHCRbivktZ5Nn98 Those fat FTD box sets I said goodbye to years ago. Until your next video 😁
I think Elvis eyes where color between green and blue, depends of light and angle. I have seen quite few of his pictures with green eyes
Did they find the binaural tapes from these sessions?
They can't find what does not exist, unfortunately. The tapes have been orderd to be destroyed and discarded by an RCA bean counter executive in 1959 together with numerous invaluable recordings. This is all we will ever get from that session.
Beautiful video. Thank you very much for standing up for Elvis and getting record straight
Hi bud how do you keep track of the records you have bud
I keep a database, with a shelf number. But I still buy things only to find I already have them.
Sorry it’s late bud merry Christmas
Thanks!
well its working, this year the 57 christmas album was back on the charts again,as long it sells, repackge will happen
I see it actually hit No.1 on one US chart!
To Rich for my blood. Just can’t swing it this time out!!! Enjoy Steve. 😊
Great summary thank you Steve! Excellent point about the B-side Blue moon of Kentucky being as revealing as That’s all right. I’m in those chapters again on the Jorgensen's book (Elvis Presley: a life in music) and enjoying it. I think I'll play A boy from Tupelo this weekend as I was going trough the booklet just a couple of days ago, reviewing dates of tours and photos. Your video and the read got me in the mood 😁 Such treasures those two Sun's 💛⚡️ I only own one original Sun...but it 's a Johnny Cash. Elvis's are out of my league 🙈 Cheers!
Thanks! It was great to do the research and get excited about these recordings again.
@tcbsince73 that's what is all about isn't it? Getting excited about the music again and again... it's great! 🎶 Enjoy ⚡
Not the usual video I’m used to from you, very well done! It would be great if some of those recordings or films that have been rumored to be in private collections could be shared with the world. If it’s a money issue, that value will quickly diminish over the next decade or two. If it’s a matter of being the only person who has and can enjoy those things, I think that mentality is a real shame.
Thanks Thomas, I totally agree, I would be so excited to share something new if I found it! Astonishing to think that RCA were offered the Pearl Harbour 1961 concert and turned it down, so it first came out as a bootleg.
What a great video so much better than the shoddy TV docs we usually get, so take note cheapo TV company's this is how it's done by a real fan who knows what he's talking about. Great respect to you Steve and a very big thank you great job.
Thanks Cliff, I appreciate the feedback.
This is excellent - I have heard this story for over 50 years but this is a fabulous precis and very accessible
What a great video, i learned a lot, thanks Steve! TCB
Nice summary, Steve. Imagine being at that 1950s concert and seeing a young Elvis doing Pledging My Love, the song that would one day make up one side of his last single.
Even more odd is that one source claims they performed Danny Boy live! I hesitated to include it as I need to know where that claim came from!
Great box set Ed ❤
??? 😳
TCB Steve Elvis was right he didn't sing like nobody and nobody could touch him ❤
Good on you Steve. A great rundown of the history of Elvis at Sun surely one of the most fascinating stories in music history.
That's as complete as it can get Steve, thanks.
you always look like your about to fall asleep .
Steve, you re a real ELVIS encyclopedia....It s a pleasure to listen to you..I always learn something new from you.... . .In 1954 , ELVIS was only 19, a poor country boy, a truck driver, who didn t even have enough money to buy a record player. . since HE gave most of HIS wages to HIS parents.. HE was inspired by different genders of music icluding black music, but not only..,.,HE never sang a song like the original, HE always made it HIS own, and that took a genious.Thank you for this great video....***LONG LIVE THE KING*** I m ready for the next decade....
Thanks Annie, I enjoyed putting it together. I just need to improve my editing skills! Working on the 56 sessions next.
It’s great to see a well researched video, you are a rare commodity in the Elvis world Sir🙏
Very nice version of the Sun story Steve. I love that period of Elvis' career. I have several books and compilations. Thanks for sharing.
Hi Steve. Do you have any more information about the second acetate . Where and when did it re-surface.and who was keeping it ?? Thanks anyway, for a fantastic video story. Top man. !!
I tried to find out where it came from, but couldn’t find anything. Thanks for watching!
My Happiness acetate was found before the Great Performances appeared, well before 2015.
Thanks, I didn’t find that information.
Hi Steve, at the 'Gotta have Rock n Roll auction!' in 2020/21 an acetate from Jack Clements private stash was sold to an unknown buyer. The acetate was said to be (and confirmed buy the page) an unreleased recording of Elvis doing 'Tiger Man' at Sun studio. I have not seen this mentioned anywhere after this auction or who the unknown buyer was. I hope this is true, and that a recording of 'Tiger Man' pre RCA exist somewhere.
Never heard that before, do you have the auction page?
Great video Steve. I'd have to add 'A Boy From Tupelo' to the reading list. For me, it's far superior to the Lorentzen set
Love the video hope you do more of them . The Sun years are my favorite Elvis period in time. These recordings were the start of the Rock n Roll revolution. The bedrock or foundation of what was to become and forever change the course of music.❤
Thanks Kerry, it’s hard to get over to people just what Elvis did at SUN. But for many great artists, this is where it all began.
Harbour Lights, inspired by Portsmouth harbour uk and a Pub sign
Great video mate, very informative and interesting and obviously well researched, well done and thanks for sharing! cheers…
Thanks Mal, hope you enjoyed the new goodies! Sound on the KC vinyl is really good and I love the GH sessions
Hello Steve absolutely loved the video very informative thank you very much my friend ❤
Thanks Tony
I loved listening and learning about early elvis. appreciate the knowledge.
Thanks John
Very informative video, Steve. I thoroughly enjoyed the history lesson.⚡️
Thanks Curt
Elvis voice was at it best in the younger way more versatile than when he got older and when he sang the blues in the early days and playing rebel he was definitely at his best in the striking up coolness and rebellion elvis direction could have been mostly a blues singer and playing characters like Jailhouse Rock easily under different management he was brilliant in that mold early elvis doing blues doesn't get any better like a baby Dixie land rock it feels so right new aleans those kind of tracks show a brilliant alternative direction should have been continuing and those cool southern bad boy roots of a wild in the country type cinema direction tought moody blues and cool is when elvis was at his best is important to his legacy that not not to many talk about because hw his manager exploited him that's connected to other aspects of elvis overshadows when he was at his best the cool young rebel singing gritty blues written by Sean Fitzpatrick
Very well researched video Steve. I hadn't really considered the point you made about Elvis' country sides being as equally radical as his R & B recordings, (which probably explains why he wasn't received at all well at the Opry). Always wondered how Sam achieved the drum sound on 'I Don't Care If The Sun Don't Shine' - thank you.
If you listen to the session tape of Blue Moon of Kentucky, after completing the song, either Scotty or Bill says “they’ll run us out of town if we play that!”
Very interesting video Steve! Enjoyed that look at the period. I agree with you Elvis was of his times, gospel, country and the blues. A boy who was inspired by the music, regardless of it being white or black. He just soaked it all up and poured it back out like nobody else could…
Thanks Adam, we need to point out just how revolutionary his approach was back then
The sun sessions never fail to amaze me. When you think he never had any training or anything like it and just literally walked in off the street and made history,he was born to sing. Really enjoyed that video. By the way my sun single (209) finally arrived from Japan and I can't stop looking at it, plus played it once. Luv the show.
Thanks Mark. Isn’t it something to have that disc in front if you. 😁
Great video Steve , I would love to see you carry on with this ,a sort of year by year .I know you did a 56 video which covered all the US releases I think it was . You have a real knack for adding different information than others would which I love
Thanks Paul, I am now working in the 56 sessions.
Great video Steve Elvis Presley: The SUN Sessions keep up cool video like outtake sun records
great history lesson Steve thanks. By the way when i click the thumbs up it don't register
Thanks Steve - finally opened mine today and really looking forward to some quality time listening and reading. Great set and definitely will be gone in a month or so. Most dealers sold out already! When I get my brain working I would like to work out how many seconds of the film they would need to produce them 2,000 film cells 😂
One second of film equals 24 filmcells. So each owner of this set has a quarter of a second of the movie.
