Pertronix Ignitor Flame Thrower Coil Common Wiring Mistake Boat Application
Переглядів 1,4 тис.3 роки тому
Common Wiring Mistake when installing pertronix ignitor and coil. Mercruiser Marine wiring harness GM 350 application. A resistor wire was in the wiring harness and caused a substantial voltage drop to the coil and ignitor. The ignitor and coil are designed for 12v application without external resistor. The Flame Thrower coil has an internal resistor specific to the engine size.
Mercruiser Alpha 1 Reverse gear stalling adjustment repair Mystery Solved?
Переглядів 5 тис.3 роки тому
Years of having issues shifting into reverse may be a thing of the past. I can now shift into reverse without the lower unit cable binding and causing the shift interrupt switch to activate and stall the engine when shifting into reverse gear. The shift interrupt works properly when shifting out of gear. I was blown away at the results. It shifts like it is supposed to!!!!

Thanks. Really helps me out.
Thanks for making a video that explained this clearly
Fantastic ty
Wow well explained thx man
Thank you!
Very helpful and informative. Clear solution to the problem
Extremely helpful! Thanks for being the first to show where the oil filter is!
I got one on eBay that was aluminum and didn’t last a year…..took it to a Waterjet guy and had a 304 stainless block of steel cut out. Took to my friends shop and had the hole drilled and tapped for the 02. I used a 90 degree bung and that has worked well to keep sensors from getting moisture on it from exhaust.
Where did you purchase or have fabricated the spacer between the manifold and riser for the O2 sensor?
Professional!
Pretty good. A different vid showed the copper bushing above the seal toward the impeller. Nice job
Yeah……I think the other video is right……I have not corrected my video!
How do get the mounting plate off the engine?!? With a gear puller
Are you referring to the harmonic balancer that the belts ride on? If so, then yes you need a puller. Autozone usually has free rental.
No puller on a 1988 mastercraft 351w 3 allen head bolts (8mm) i think. 1 allen head bolt directly at the bottom of the pump holds it to the bracket. 2 bolts hold the bracket to the engine block. Roughly 5/8 inch heads on those bolts. Sorta easy to see with a bright light. Best wishes.
What torque on the cover bolts?
Not much, also the copper washer goes in just before impeller. I did it wrong in the video. Not on the back of the seal.
Thanks for all the videos. Great work, Do you still recommend this EFI conversion for inboard marine applications? Thanks
Yes, if you can skip the coast guard stuff it is simpler to operate.

Very cool video ! I have a 496 fuel injected motor in my boat and was considering a carb conversion to make things simple and reliable... (and faster) but now may put one of these sniper units on a Dart carb'd intake instead. Looks very reliable and easier to tweak/tune.
Hi did you need to put any 0 2 sensors anywhere in the exhaust system
I did. I have 2 videos. The original install used an aluminum plate that didn’t work well. I had it redone with a stainless steel plate and a 90 degree exhaust bung and now it works great.

First comment🎉
I installed my Holley sniper EFI on my boat and it is doing the same thing stalling out when shift back to neutral. Did you just change the spark plug wires to non-resistor wires and that solved the problem? If so where you purchase the wires?
It was a resistor wire to the coil that lowered the voltage and my electronic ignition module and coil required 12v to work properly. Resistor wire was in factory wiring harness and had to be bypassed.
@@bigbossjrmang So that's the grey original harness wire and you just disconnected it?
What color was the wire, grey or purple?
I bypassed it, I cut out the resistor portion. It’s ignition specific. If you have points then you need the resistor. Also consider the linkage for the outdrive being an issue…….
I don't have points, I have the MSD ready to run distributor. I still have a purple wire from the old factory wiring harness. Would that be the resistor wire?
Do you have a thunderbolt-5 ignition system already on your boat?
No. Pertronix ignitor and coil. Basic distributor.
@@bigbossjrmang the reason I was asking because I didn't see your pertronix ignitor in your video. Do you have pic of that install
I have a couple videos about sniper install. I don’t think specific about the ignitor. It is a basic coil negative wiring. Totally stock. Nothing unique.
@@bigbossjrmang Thats what my intentions were, just hook up basic, but the Holley Technician said my existing Thunderbolt 5 module, which controls ignition spark would cause problems with my Holley sniper EFI.
I don’t have thunder bolt. I don’t know anything about it.
Hot me up
Hey hit me up, I figured out your efi issue on your boat. Hope you reply!

@@bigbossjrmang you have to take of the reluctor wheel off the back of the crank. Can't be on with a new efi setup. That's why it runs well and then doesn't. The sensor in it is on and reading tdc then going out of whack.

I watched your EFI holley install . I need to see how you wired the holley sniper. I'm about to install on my 5.7 V8 350 need help with wiring.
190 horizon? Any update on the new system.... Going well?
Yes horizon 190. When it works it’s awesome. I have had a bad o2 and it still worked ok when unplugged. New o2 then a couple hours later it ran horrible dumping fuel. Unplugged o2 and no change. Holley sent warranty shipping label for the main unit. They tested and said nothing wrong. I reinstalled and it works great……when it works it is excellent!

When you say the sniper does not like the mercruiser interrupt shifting switch what specifically does the sniper not like? also, did your sniper kit come with the new distributor and how did you go about installing it and who did you purchase through and how were the instructions and or phone support as well as cost. Thanks by the way the video helped me thanks for making it.
When the ignition cuts out there is a cough/ sputter during shifting out of gear. Not the end of the world. Bought it through Jeggs. No support with jeggs. Holley has been helpful over the phone. I use the stock distributor with pertronix ignitor. My sniper was working great for about 50hrs and then started flooding. Sent unit back and they said 2 months to even get to it. Sometime in February is what they said and it went bad early December. Hope it is a fluke problem….. time will tell. When it works it is awesome but when it goes bad there is no limping it home in my experience.
Any input on the fuel economy increase or maybe even performance gains?
Idle is more stable, more responsive through power settings, fuel savings is difficult to be exact. I don’t run the engine very hard, but I think around a gallon an hour average savings. I have also worked with a variety of props to dial the whole package in.

Non ethanol fuel would of fixed the vapor lock
I just talked my boat mechanic about doing this to my boat he said it's a waste of time did you notice any power performance or horsepower improvement how about trouble with the O2 sensor
Solved vapor issues and starting problems. Very responsive and healthy idle. 02 sensor needs to be angled to avoid moisture or condensation collecting in it. That will take some creativity. Even without the 02 sensor hooked up it still runs better than a carb. Just my opinion. I have another video on the initial install.
Love the video a lot of useful information I just talked to my boat mechanic he was saying that EFI was a waste of time to notice any improvements in performance or horsepower how about having trouble with O2 sensors
❤❤❤❤❤ great video
Looking to do this to my MerCruiser did the holy EFI come with a fuel pump or did you do something yourself did you change the distributor or keep the original and can we get a link for the O2 sensor block of eBay that you installed also thank you for your video
I bought the kit marine kit from Holley. It comes with marine rated pump. I used stock distributor with pertronix pickup and coil. Be sure to remove resistor wire. I have videos on that too. I left link in another reply. eBay marine gm 350 02 sensor plate.
What about running an hei distributor out of a TBI 350 Chevy it's in the coil cap and all is in one
I know this was a year ago, but the engine cutting ignition to shift, is something you can program into your Holley, and get it to cut fuel at the same time..
I would like to know more about your suggestion! I asked Holley on the phone about it but I don’t think I described it properly because they didn’t have any reply.
Not sure why people feel the need to do this. My old Rochester Quadrajet on my Merc 5.7 runs and works like a champ. Great fuel efficiency and horsepower. Easy to maintain.
hi, Im trying to order this kit for my me cruiser 350 vintage 1985 cant seem to get these guys on the phone , I dont see a kit with the plate under the riser like you did, is there a kit with that, or is it separate ?
Separate. Got it on eBay.
Outstanding!

What distributer set up did you use? Also where do i hook up the two wires coming from the Shift interrupter cutoff switch? Please let me know I have no fucking idea Thanks
Stock distributor with pertronix ignitor and flamethrower coil. Shift interrupt is wired to - side of the coil to momentarily disrupt ignition.
@@bigbossjrmang I am adding hyperspark coil and cd box. I have two yellow wires coming from shift interrupt and grey and purple wire coming from wire bundle. Please inform me anything you may know i am stuck on the 4 yard down I need this TD please Thank you for your time
I don’t know about that system. My setup has 1 of the wires from shift interrupt go to ground and the other to the negative side of the coil. forums.iboats.com/threads/shift-interrupt-switch-for-holley-hp-efi-conversion.674975/ This link describes someone that had it work that way.
I have a newbie question, with that can style coil on the ground side. I know you run switched 12v to the hot side, what do you run to the ground side of the coil? Just the ground wire from the distributor? Or do you also run a ground to the engine?
Tach wire, and the shift interrupt. thats it.
Any updates on the sniper system? I just ordered my sniper kit for my mercruiser 5.7. Hows she run??
Runs great. No complaints on sniper. Had a couple shift issues but that was more related to a weak ignition. I used pertronix ignitor as electronic ignition and found resistor wire left over from point ignition. Now has 12V to coil and is a game changer. Let me know what you learn and experience! Ask any ?’s you have!!!!
Where did you get the diode from?
Amazon. I think it’s a 35 amp marine diode. Sierra part. I just googled marine outboard diode and you’ll have many options.

Anyway you could post where you put your 02?
The video shows the 02 sensor install. Where and how.
It would have been a lot easier if you would have just purchased an adjustable pressure switch! With an adjustable switch you can lower the psi in which the switch activates as well as relocating the switch to a port on the engine that sees pressure sooner! But like they say there is more than one way to skin a cat, Great job!
I'm going to install the same setup, and have purchased an adjustable sensor... What port on the engine will see oil pressure the soonest?
Thanks for the video, How much did you paid for the EFI.... I am looking to making the change on my boat as well... thanks..
Around $1800. Kit cost plus the oil switch and coast guard marine hose and extension cable.
Love this setup. Great videos. Are you in Southern California?
Yes in SoCal. Working to shoot and upload a concluding video after a couple updates of the system. Hopefully up in a week or two!
Very cool, I am in orange county and sell boats in Newport Beach. Just picked up a 27 Tiara Open with twin carbureted 5.7s I would love to see your set up if you’re open to it.

Hi I am looking for a spacer plate for a 454 big block I am changing it over to an EFI this winter time could you tell me what you look for on eBay for that thanks
www.ebay.com/itm/322489451597?hash=item4b15de844d:g:NIkAAOSwWiBY-RWT
This will get you started. I didn’t see an option for 454. I have seen from google search in the past. Watch then second video on the fuel pump switch for coast guards compliance.
Wouldnt the o2 get water on it ?
Have you had any issues with flooding when doing warm or hot starts? Thanks
Not so far.
Thanks for letting me know. I watched some videos that suggested because the tach does a surge when the ignition is first turned on, that the computer thinks that the engine needs that much fuel and it instructs the injectors to give that much fuel, causing flooding on warm starts. I'm glad to know that this product is not causing that for you! Can you send me a link to where you purchased this, please, and a link to the other 2 videos. Thanks
@@AK-ki5kz ua-cam.com/video/KvIDFE5mg9Q/v-deo.html
@@AK-ki5kz I purchased from jeggs. It was the kit version that came with the pump, hose and fittings. You may want to price out getting the pump and hose separately if for marine application.
Please explain further about the shift interrupt switch. I was considering the Edelbrock carb and now looking at the sniper EFI. my concern is when the shift interrupt switch grounds the EFI. Thank You.
The sniper unit is not connected to the shift ignition interrupt switch. I had originally wired the sniper tach wire to the coil which is wrong. 2nd video talked about it. I have yet to get boat back in the water to see if any difference wired properly. Holley describes that sniper is sensitive to electrical noise. 3rd video will be completed when I get boat in the water to test.
is it possible to NOT use an O2 sensor? and do open loop?
I think it is. A call to Holley would be best to confirm.
