How to Configure SDRTrunk without a Premium RadioReference Subscription
After publishing a video on how to configure the SDRTrunk software by importing channels from RadioReference.com, I received questions about the need for a premium subscription to RadioReference. If you don't have a premium subscription, this video will show you how to manually configure SDRTrunk using data freely available on RadioReference.

      @@defalt7651 I don't have experience with that device, so I can't say for sure. I recommend referring to the sdrtrunk docs, where I think there is a list of supported hardware. For antenna, it just comes down to what you want to hear. In my area, I'm interested in the 800MHz band, and there is a strong signal in my area, so I just split off from my TV antenna. Your mileage may vary.

    Hello, thank you for your video. This is the answer I was looking for. I have a question, I work at a company that uses p25 phase 2. We have limited radios in our particular department which is on one talk group ID out of 20 different departments, of which each of those departments has their own talk group ID. When another department wants to get a hold of my department, they switch over their radios to our channel on our Motorola radios. If I decide narrow down the alias / playlist to simply pick up my department, Will I be able to hear when the other department is contacting our department? Or will I simply hear our response? I'm kind of a new person at this so thank you for your patience.

      Check to see what the bandwidth of the system you are attempting to decode. If it's greater than the bandwidth of your SDR then this could be your problem. My town Plymouth recently moved to bostons trunk system which is massive. I'm assuming that's why my $hit can't get clear decodes and it's intermittent wonky at best. Even using 2 SDRs I can only cover 6mhz of bandwidth. I forget what the Boston system is but I know it's f@#king massive 🥴I gave up 🤣. Moved into pocsag , Js8 call, key fobs, neighbors electronic devices lol

      This is not an error I've encountered, so not sure what it would be caused by. If I had to guess, I would think maybe you are not receiving a strong enough signal or maybe too strong and overdriving your receiver. I'd recommend looking at your gain settings, but aside from that, I'm not sure.

      Its most likely an issue with compatibility with a USB device your are plugging your dongles into. Try plugging your dongle into a different USB port or a different USB hub. Then, restart the app and try again.

    Thank you. This was very helpful for me. SDRTrunk is very useful, but it is not intuitive at all. That coupled with the radio world's way of having 7 to 10 thousand ways to say anything means that our references and software, or whatever, tend to not line up when it comes to terminology means that anyone who isn't at least moderately proficient has a *uva time getting a grasp on some of this. I would love to see an in-depth breakdown of the information we find on radioreference and what we see in SDRTrunk and other software. If that exists, please point us. If it doesn't, and it's something you could do, please do that. Would be very useful for many of us. RadioReference is great, but it doesn't hold any hands :)

    In Firefox, just copying the talkgroup section you want gives a nice text copy. It also pasts into Word nicely - as a table - so you can write a quick macro to add the tags needed. Excel also takes it nicely, so you can generate the macros there. (Some pages are written so badly that you have to manipulate between Paste Special in Windows, or Paste Special in Excel, then copy and paste to the other, before you get what you want. Not Radio Reference. It's laid out as a table, so it copies as a table - just what we need.)

    Great Video. I am just getting started with SDRTrunk. How many SDR radios do you use with this setup? Or how many are required?

    • @ryowens
      @ryowens 9 місяців тому

      It depends on the bandwidth of the SDR and the total bandwidth of the trunked system you are monitoring. The RSPdx that I use has a 10MHz bandwidth, which is enough to cover the local trunked system I care about, so I only need the one SDR receiver. If I were using RTL dongles though, I would likely need two or three depending on how many conversations I wanted to be able to track at one time and how wide the bandwidth required to do so would be.

    • @ryowens
      @ryowens Рік тому

      Yes, Winlink works great with a FTM400. I have an FTM400 in my vehicle and have used it many times for Winlink. The easiest way is to get a converter cable for the radio's 10 pin mini-DIN to a 6 pin mini-DIN (Yaesu sells a few different varieties of adapter), then get the Signalink cable that matches the 6 pin mini-DIN. That cable works with a variety of radios including the FT450D, some Kenwood mobiles, etc. You do have to get the radio settings right, like turn off the APRS modem in the radio, etc. I'm not sure which Baofeng I used in the video. It could have been a BF-F8+ but I'm not sure. Whatever it is, it is most likely a 2015 or 2016 era version.

I click OK and continue following your lead. When I get to watching the waterfall, I don't have the steady activity. In fact, I only get activity when I hit the monitor button, my waterfall matches yours. When I hit Start, I connects like yours but then immediately disconnects. It doesn't show any traffic like yours and mail in my outbox never sends. Please help.

    • @ryowens
      @ryowens Рік тому

      It sounds like you have multiple issues. The KISS port busy is a TCP port conflict on your computer. You can open a command prompt and run "netstat -an" to see if something is listening on that port. If it is, you can either figure out what it is or use a different port in SoundModem and Winlink. The waterfall issue sounds like a squelch problem. Perhaps you have your squelch set too high or tone squelch enabled. Depending on your radio, you may or may not see waterfall signal when no incoming signal is present. That isn't necessarily an issue.

    • @ryowens
      @ryowens Рік тому

      I'm using one. The thing you have to consider is bandwidth. For example, when I use my SDRPlay RSPdx, it has 10MHz bandwidth, so it can cover the full range of the Ohio MARCS system in my home area. When I run on an RTL dongle, the bandwidth of that receiver is only like 2MHz or something, so it will miss some traffic as it can't span the full spectrum from the lowest channel to the highest channel in the system. You can see this happening in the sdrtrunk log - it will have messages about "no Tuner available." I didn't realize this until after I made these videos, as it worked perfectly with my RSPdx, then it seemed to also be working fine with the cheap dongle. Only later did I start looking at the logs out of curiosity, see the messages and dig in to why they were there.

That might give you a clue to chase. It's been a while since I made this video, but I think it uses a .bat file to launch the software. You could also add a "pause" command to the end of the batch file to try to get the window to stay open so you can read the error message.

      Ryan, Just want to thank you for your helpful hints on my report of intermittent operation on the dongles and software. After several trials and errors I found 2 thing that affected the outcome the most: 1, adjusting the receiver gain for a "sweet spot". 2, using separate antennas for each of the 2 dongle receivers. Working well now, enjoying it. Thank you, Pete

      Hmmm.... Unfortunately that is not an issue I have had. I'm not sure what would cause that. I'm not involved with the development of SDRTrunk, but perhaps you can reach out to the group that writes that software? Sorry I don't have an idea for your problem.

    Cool video, Ryan. I monitor the exact same system you do. I tried the Max Traffic Channels at >1, as you suggested. I remembered then why I found that setting early on and shut that down. Chaos! IDK how you do it man! But your video reminded me of it and got me thinking. The problem with one channel only is ignored aliases will dominate other calls with silence and priority doesn't do anything at all. But if I can figure out the priority with >1 channel so that the calls aren't walking all over one another, I'd be a happy camper. If you know to do that, I'd love to see a video. I miss the pre-trunk days where you could stop the scan on District 4, or whatever, and hang with something going down. I'd like to try to accomplish this, or something close, too somehow.
