Installing and Configuring sdrtrunk with an RTL SDR Dongle

- If you want to receive digital trunked radio signals (like many police and fire departments use) for well under $50, this video is for you. I'll walk you through setting up an RTL-based SDR and then installing the open source sdrtrunk software.
PLEASE NOTE: The inexpensive RTL SDR dongles have limited bandwidth. As a result, you may find that you are not able to follow all trunked channels on your system of interest since the software has to keep the control channel within the bandwidth of the dongle. If you see debug messages about "No tuner available" for some of the trunked channels while listening, this is likely your issue. There are a couple of ways to fix this. One is to add additional RTL SDR dongles to increase the spectrum the software can consume. Another is to use a more powerful SDR receiver, like an SDRplay device or similar, BUT to make an SDRplay receiver work with the sdrtrunk software requires extra (pretty technical) steps not covered in this video.

Great video, thank you. The latest SDRTrunk comes with JAVA, so no need to install it separately.
I've been through a handful of video trying to get my little gut running three months of pain and you solved it within a ten minute video love you content...we would love to see how to integrate plug-ins with the pwnagotchi like GPS battery life cpu ect thanks man much appreciated
First of all, thank you for such a perfect explanation, you should be a teacher. Second, a question, would this entire installation process be the same for me who have the v4 of rtl sdr? Greetings and thanks again for the excellent video.
Super merci pour le tuto
awsome thank you
RTL-2832 USB Bus:3 Port: 13
Status: Error - Unsupported/Unrecognized Tuner Type.
If i reset the turner I get an error
Status: Error - access denied - if using linux, blacklist the default driver and /or install udev rules.
I'm running windows 11, and have a RTL-2832, any help to get this to work would be great.
Wonderful tutorial! I have an install following your instructions that works on a Win 11 box and one that fails on a Win 10 box. The failure displays the command line window briefly but quits without the UI window displaying. The Win 10 box also has a running v0.4 version but now does not display the extensive playlist I made and backed up. Both boxes only use Win Defender. Any advice on fix the Win 10 install?
I'm really not sure. I would recommend opening a command prompt window and trying to run the command to start the software from that window so you can see the error message being reported. That might give you a clue to chase. It's been a while since I made this video, but I think it uses a .bat file to launch the software. You could also add a "pause" command to the end of the batch file to try to get the window to stay open so you can read the error message.
HI I NEED YOUR HELP i have set up my RTLSDR dongle as you say to do and it is work but i have one problem the voice is clear on to receive but after 10minutes it cuts out and i can't understand any thing it songs all GARGLE and i cant understand anything CAN YOU LPEASE TELL ME WHAT TO DO TO FIX IT THANKS
Ryan, I have a problem similar to the other comment, I installed per your video. System works fime for a couple of minutes and then quits working or plays an occassional part of a conversation every now and then. Any advice on where to look to begin to troubleshoot this? Please. Thank You
I haven't experienced that issue, so unfortunately I don't have an answer. I know that some of the RTL-SDR dongle have some thermal issues. Is it possible that your receiver is overheating? Just a guess.
@@ryowens Ryan, that is possible, both get quite warm. Is there a dongle that you would like to recommend?
@Peter Van Den Berge I have limited experience with different ones. I know that the ones from the rtl-sdr dot com site claim to have good thermal characteristics by having metal cases and heat sink elements. I've ran one of those for extended periods without issue, but that's about all I can say.
Ryan, Just want to thank you for your helpful hints on my report of intermittent operation on the dongles and software. After several trials and errors I found 2 thing that affected the outcome the most: 1, adjusting the receiver gain for a "sweet spot". 2, using separate antennas for each of the 2 dongle receivers. Working well now, enjoying it. Thank you, Pete
Good video thanks.
Is all this procesa same compatible with rtl sdr V4?
