All great players but in almost all comment sections on this topic...it seems Dave A. is the name most mentioned as the favorite...and I totally agree. Ive seen PJ with all of their drummers (except Krusen/Chamberlain) and the shows with Dave A. had an energy, power and magic that they havent come close to touching since they let him go. I like Jacks playing best in the band Eleven....Cameron is amazing in Soundgarden...with PJ it just seems like his strengths as a player are not used properly...Matt is best when he is able to really stretch out and explore weirder timings and arrangements and PJ are not that kind of band....especially in their later career albums. I know its been said a million times before but the Unplugged show is truly brought to new heights by Dave As amazing embellishments and the energy he brought to the performance...sure they all do a great job...but Dave A is the MVP of that performance) So glad I got to see them play many times while he was with them. My interest in their music has certainly waned in the years since he was fired. When Eddie took over the reigns of the band and when they let go of Dave....they just became very middle of road and boring in my opinion. I know people still love them (and thats fine) but in my opinion...after 93/94 they really peaked and have been treading in murky water ever since.
Abbruzzese was my fave PJ drummer. It's like a Mars Volta/Jon Theodore thing, Dave brought an energy and finesse that was distinct to him, that era of PJ's success belongs to him just as much as the rest of the band. It's not a better / worse thing, it's a character and energy thing.
I adore the way you play, Dave! One of the reasons I continued to play the instrument is because of you. Additionally, I think it's really awesome that you leave nice and tailored comments on videos that feature Pearl Jam and yourself.
Dave's splashes his 5 (7) stroke doubles between hats snare - ride hats just also a big influence and of course his drum compositions just great and he was brilliant in the unplugged
thoughtful video. nicely done.
I 100% agree about today’s music with the loud drums. I noticed it even in punk rock with rancid I like the snares tapping the snare crash symbol that’s nostalgia to me nowadays I don’t understand they want to smash into each other. The mosh pits are deadly because the loud drums are out. Drumming did beautiful music of the band there they’re there to complement band. They’re very part of a band. My favorite part of a band is the drummer and I’ve noticed even in punk rock with rancid. He’s got to have a loud drummer for these festivals and he knows what he’s doing to Armstrong. He’s not stupid, but I’m not into anything new I can’t except for rancid they still I listen to everything in my past every day all day but yeah your spot on I listen to you all the time by the way
Dave 100%. PJ really fell flat after album 3. Eddie changed his signing and phrasing meh
Sorry bro respectfully disagree imagine how good they would be had they kept abruezze ...
Matt Cameron is one of the best in the business. Pearl Jam, Soundgarden... no need to say more.
The absolutely insane amount of glazing for Abbruzzese in this comment section is comical. The dude is an amazing drummer, but people are seriously pretending that Jack and Matt are bad drummers to prop him up, and are pretending this band has made nothing worthwhile without him. Pretending that those two have not done anything interesting with the band is pure willful ignorance
Dave Abruzzi is the best drummer of Pearl jam ❤️❤️❤️ Two album VS & vitalogy was a great album 👍👍👍
Matt Cameron played on the demos that recruited Eddie Vedder, I believe... No Matt Cameron, no Pearl Jam?
Great news.
DAVE ABBRUZZESE SIMPLY THE BEST! HE'S THE LEGEND. BIG RESPECT TO THIS GUY! INCOMPARABLE. LOVE YOU MAN!!!
MatT Cameron is an amazing drummer but the worst for PJ
Amazing feel. Amazing. Somewhere between being a dancer and an athlete applied to drumming.
Don't agree with your take on Dave not being the right drummer for that time but each to their own. Great vid
In my opinion grunge is totally boring. This is because I'm born too early. I prefer early hard rock with a lot of blues in it. Later the hairband era formed my preferences (definitely not all bands, but many). With this said, I stumbled over the 1 hour podcast with Dave and just had to investigate more. Isolating his drums is interesting. He is a piece of work. I like his playing ❤.
excellant video, I enjoyed it a lot and agree with everything you say, except your comment on the splash use from the drummer of The Presidents of the United States. Sometimes I need 'goofiness' like that band, and I can see why you don't like it ;-)
Krusen was the solid classic fit, Abbruzzese was the monster, Jack was the magic and literally, Matt was the robot. But for me, i could only binge listen to Krusen, Abbruzzese and Irons with Irons as my favorite. Yield was perhaps their most artistical peak album. The maturity and creativitt were just surreal.
Pearl Jam do not incorporate drums into their songs that stand out they don’t want memorable drums . Sound Garden did and Matt Cameron shined
Nice video. Man I felt the love ❤️ and to non musicians you may never know the amount of self that we put down into our songs; and to be aware of who’s self it is, is sometimes overlooked and this is not one of those times.. so, cheers my guy.. cheers
Good call on daughter the ghost notes are just beautiful, if you don’t play drums it’s really hard to understand how insane that part is.
What size kick?
U forgot 1 drummer … Satan’s Bed Jimmy Shoaf . I know is just one song and he was felling up but it’s a great song and outstanding work too
Excellent video my man. A little slap in the face to all of us PJ fans who are drummers. Each drummer brought what was needed at the time. Not gonna lie though, I enjoy the playing of both Daves the most. What can I say? I was born in 84!
Matt freeman pretty badass bassist
on 10:20 I HAD to rewind that delayed snare and then you said “we gotta hear that again” hahah. I love people who are passionate in the little details in the things they like.
Listening to the tom work you highlighted in Matt Cameron’s playing it’s easy to see why he was such a good fit in Soundgarden. SG had odd time signatures and had more of a metal tone to their guitars at times and that syncopated feel doesn’t work anywhere near as well with Pearl Jam because of the tone of the guitars. It can still be syncopated with the kick drum but it was the sizzle of the hi-hats and cymbal work of Dave A, along with the kick drum that was the perfect match with PJ and their guitar and overall style. If Dave A took that approach to SG it wouldn’t work as well because SG guitar tones and sound is much darker, hence Cameron’s tom work is more at home. Interesting to analyse them all, Matt Cameron is the man in SG though no doubt, he’s an absolute legend in that band! Dave A for PJ!
If you want to talk about Matt Cameron's timing creativity. You really need to go to Soundgarden
I seem to be in the minority but Jack's pocket always felt best to me.
Great job. Big fan of NP apparently :)
it´s sound amazing !!! i have the Beech "jupiter" finish ply and i love the lugs !
Abrussese was good but overrated, he was cymbal happy, jack irons work on yield is vital...theres a connection w his drums and the songs as a whole
Good solo 👍
I dislike Dave A. haters.
I do not think Dave A. is overrated. I think he is unfairly dismissed for his usage of cymbals. Nothing wrong with cymbals. Having a preference does not make one a Dave A. groupie, ya jagoff.
I don’t like you Dave A fan boys.
Best Matt's album is "Superunknown".
Matt, an excellent drummer in general, seemed particularly elevated with Soundgarden. If they had changed drummers at any point it would have affected them like a lead singer change would affect other bands.
They should've fired Vedder instead.
AAbbbruzzzzeessse!!!! PJ lost many fans when they fired him. They also lost their mojo, sound, energy, drive... it was heartbreaking for me as a young drummer to have my then-favorite band drop my drum hero Dave. I've hated Vedder & co ever since. Objectively though, their music has totally sucked ever since and it's evidently a direct result of not having Dave's energy and talent on the drums. Such a shame. I will always wonder what could have been.
I will say the best word I can think of to describe Abbruzzese's sound is "obnoxious"; yet though I usually dislike obnoxious stuff, I thought it worked very well in PJ's music.
@@ILikeWafflz you're obviously a drummer who dislikes 'busy' drummers, but if you take a moment to analyze the songs where Dave sounds 'obnoxious', like maybe the intro to Satan's Bed or the blistering wall of toms on WMA, you'll find that those songs were generally weaker compositions and his drumming is actually the bright spot that breathed life into those songs and made them worth listening to in the first place.
@@calixohiggins9843 I wasn't using "obnoxious" in a negative sense there; I was saying his playing there is the type I would normally see as overplaying, but in PJ it seemed like it was a type of energy that benefited the music. I believe I could have worded that better
@@ILikeWafflz You're spot on about how well his style of playing complimented PJ. That chemistry is everything for a jam band like PJ. Matt Cameron in Soundgarden and TOTD was one of my other favorite drummers growing up, but his style seems awkwardly out of place with PJ's once 'swinging' sound. Despite his technical proficiency, in PJ he sounds stiff and the music sounds lifeless.
@@calixohiggins9843 Exactly how I feel about Matt in PJ; an excellent drummer who doesn't quite fit.
Abbruzzeze is the best ever Pearl Jam drummer
ok so this is how I feel about these drummers...all of them are great, but Dave Abbruzzese was the best in this band. By the time I got to see them live in 1996, he was gone and EVedder cut his hair and started wearing Hawaiian shirts. I really love drummers that are musical. I'd put dave up there with Bonham any day.
dave was the best its sad that pearl jam are triggered by politics
Thank you so much for putting this together I really enjoyed it.. Great work man
Danny Carey is one of the most thoughtful drummers when it comes to cymbal and bell work. Prove me wrong?
True, Dave can't be compared to any other drummer at the time. His "agression " is nothing but awesome ⚡⚡⚡
Each Drummer had their place in Pearl Jam respectfully. Nothing against Matt Cameron, but watched the video where Krusen joined them for a Ten set and that "signature" Pearl Jam sound came back that the band has been missing for years. Abbruzzese took the band to another level. Both Daves, to me, were THE Pearl Jam drummers. That swing/groove/power style made Pearl Jam sound that way. Changed the way the vocals and guitars fell in pocket and accented those vocal lines. I love Matt Cameron, and no disrespect at all to his playing and contributions, but the Daves were the sound. Cameron was the sound of Soundgarden. Krusen drew the map, Abbruzzese took it and mastered it to another level and found the treasure.
Wow...thanks Adam!! I'm going to bookmark this for my next rejection😁
Incredibly intelligent analysis of Pearl Jam’s drummers. Love how you give us clips of the songs to illustrate each point you make. Your observation that Pearl Jam has already had the right drummer at the right time is so perceptive.
It’s just drums people. They he important person is Eddie bedder, followed by stone gossard.
