    Hi, am wandering if this paddlesuit has latex wrist /neck gasket? I would be very thankful, if you can make detailed video :)

    • @capitalcitykayak
      @capitalcitykayak 2 місяці тому

      Hey there! No indeed, the gaskets are Chris Reed’s proprietary fabric. There is NO latex in it. It’s one of the selling point for those of us who have reactions.

    • @capitalcitykayak
      @capitalcitykayak 2 місяці тому

      @@109cow I would call this a "paddler's suit." I had about a 1/4 cup of sea water sneak in during a rough 15 minute swim. Otherwise, dry. The gaskets are sized to the paddler's measurements, but are crazy tight. None the less I'd suggest not trimming them unless you are strangling.

    • @capitalcitykayak
      @capitalcitykayak 5 місяців тому

      This is an adaptive move. If you were teaching regularly, especially amongst people with challenges, you’d find a reason to use this. Additionally, American Canoe instructors are required to know how to do this and teach it. I’m an instructor trainer. My candidates often refer to this video before they take a workshop with me. That being said-- I’ve only used this method myself on a surf ski in rough water when I was alone and having shoulder trouble so I couldn’t cowboy. And there’s no heel hooking a ‘ski, or for that matter, a sit on top. Your point--that it takes time and effort is valid but misses all the reasons we might want to use and teach this.

    I used to do that type of self rescue. But I’ve broken one paddle and when getting into the kayak and retrieving the paddle behind you, under the deck lines, you lose some of your balance. I tipped over again doing this in choppy waters. It was years since I had to do a self rescue (rolling now) but I teach it a lot. I do not teach putting the paddle under the deck lines but only tell my students about it. But still it’s many times the easiest self rescue. Nice video btw.

    • @capitalcitykayak
      @capitalcitykayak 7 місяців тому

      Thanks. Many people with smaller hands and/or adaptive paddlers need to use the deck lines. It’s an option, certainly not a mandatory one.

    In a lake, calm like that, you'll never capsize. And in a lake you can capsize in, you can never make an reentry this way. Completly theoretically and unrealistic.

    • @capitalcitykayak
      @capitalcitykayak 9 місяців тому

      It’s really tough to film in real conditions. Additionally, the well-enabled would not use this rescue at all. I never have, for example. However, students struggling with self rescue have and do use it , and appreciate it.

      The reason you practise manoeuvres like this is so you at least have an idea what to do. After the fact is not a time to start wondering-- "what do I do now" Like all learning you have to start from a safe basic stance where you have a chance to actually learn before progressing to more complex situations..

      Lolz. Yeah, it was the quick sand that got us. We were afraid someone would call the rescue team on the island and then they’d get stuck in the sand too. We’d all just be standing knee deep in sand until the tide turned and we either floated out or became permanent features of the shoal.

    Does Reed put their relief zipper down low enough, or did you have to special order it to be lower than it would be for a man? I've heard that Kokatat will put it extra low for FUD use, but I'd really like to get a Reed drysuit.

    • @capitalcitykayak

      Reed naturally puts their's lower, on all suits. It's one of the reasons we prefer Reed in most cases. Frankly, my husband struggles to use the standard location on Kokatat suits, and he's a boy. ZIPPER TOO HIGH Kokatat!
