GoPro video of the first few minutes of the Jack Frost, riding in Sportsman. I stop at the end of the video when the chain comes off and gets jammed between the front sprocket and the swing arm which was the end of my race. The GoPro is mounted on the bars as the ACU have banned body or helmet mounted cameras.

Cool stuff well done boys! Looking at trading my basic 13 model on a 2018 rallye. Is the suspension any better or is it all in the colour scheme? I think the tank shape looks a bit better on the rallye or maybe thats just across the range as they evolved?

That is brilliant. I've ridden some of those trails on small enduro bikes and they are pretty tough, big respect to you both on 1200GS's.
Saw your post on UKGSER, enjoyed that. Age old question, what tyres were favourite? TKC or something more knobbly?
Hi Mike, I’m running Anakee Wilds. I really like then on and off-road and usually get about 3000 miles out of a rear and double that from a front. But you could do this event on road tyres.

Genuine question because I’m thinking of buying one, I noticed you struggled in one section where one of the more dirt orientated bikes flew by. Was that the rider skills or the bike itself, genuinely interested not a troll question
Rider skills 100%. I’m short for this bike at 5’10. So I was a bit too cautious riding in the centre of that rutted section as I knew I couldn’t easily dab. Then once stopped, the bike took a bit of effort to get moving again. The 640 is very capable though.
I want to do Bike trip in Europe but I can't 😥😞😞😞😞No ability

Very slippery in places, huge respect staying upright. Road the Coast to Coast challenge on my R1200GS in the summer, and the mud ruts were the most challenging aspect, nowhere near as bad as some in the film.

We go up Breedts neck, here in Gauteng Johannesburg, South Africa, very hard, but if you pick your lines properly and keep the momentum up, you can make it , very rewarding.I have a 2010 GS the GSA's are to bulky, I do everything and more , I dont need an extra 10litres, I would rather take my 6liter fuel sack

Road tyres!! REALLY!!
I'd only had the bike a couple of weeks at the time of this ride and hadn't had a chance to get new tyres. As it was, the front was a bit sketchy in places but there was a surprising amount of grip. I fitted Michelin Anakee Wilds shortly afterwards which worked really well, with loads of side grip from the front tyre.

I've tried the TKC80's and they were OK. I preferred the Michelin Anakee Wilds on the GS.

What is up with that KTM not starting in traffic?
It was overheating and generally not very happy. It developed an issue with its injector as the trip progressed and would cut out, perhaps the issues in NYC were an early sign. Russ became an expert at stripping it down and cleaning the injector :-)

I'm excited to see the full series. It will be an interesting comparison between the 690 and the two BIG adv bikes. I'm on a KLR, but considering the KTM 690 or even dropping down to a DRZ 400 or even a 250 class bike for the weight. Any insights you have would be greatly appreciated!
The KLR will be fine for the TAT. I would not recommend changing to a smaller capacity bike. Just ride ✊there is so much to see 👍
I would never do this to my bike. This is the reason why I bought my bike factory new!
The bikes can handle it and they clean-up well.

The shipping was easy. Customs in New York was more difficult - they had no idea what the rules were for bikes and our Shipping Agent had to call them several times to explain what they needed to do. :-)

That might look like a footpath but its a green lane and a legal right of way.
@@mholly I hope you're right, but that looks very much like a yellow footpath marker to me 😉. Maybe they just follow the same route for a small section...
and i thought rutland rigg was hard going on an 1150gsa jeez that is very tough going.
