Simple Cinematic Podcast Setup
Hey guys! Just thought I'd go behind the scenes for this podcast setup I did for a client of mine, and do a little cinematic lighting tutorial / podcast setup tutorial. I was really happy with how it turned out. The contrast was heavy, and the cinema was with us (shoutout to Camera Conspiracies for that phrase). I shot this on the Nikon Z6iii, Nikon ZF, and Sony A7Siii.
Hope you enjoy.

These 5 Things Would Make the Nikon Z6III PERFECT
Переглядів 1,2 тис.Місяць тому
The Nikon Z6 III is an amazing camera in almost every single way, but just a couple fixes and few features would make it the best camera for capturing cinematic video. I've been using it non stop on all of my projects and it quickly became my favorite camera. #nikonzseries #nikonz6iii #z6iii #cinematography #filmmaking #z6iiiforvideo

Can you Shoot a Music Video on the Nikon Z6III?
Переглядів 9092 місяці тому
I shot a music video on the Nikon Z6III. How did it turn out? I've really grown to love the Nikon Z6III. The Z6III is great in low light, and I can use all my Sony E Mount glass on it. I wanted to try it out for this project and I was really pleased with the results. I really enjoy music video cinematography, and had a blast using the Nikon to capture these dark scenes. It was also a great time...
Try This ONE TRICK for CLEAN N-Log Footage | Nikon Z6III
Переглядів 2,4 тис.2 місяці тому
I hope this trick helps you clean up your shadows! The Nikon Z6III has such a good image, but I wasn't loving the noise in the shadows. I did a camera test to see if overexposing by a stop or two would clean it up by lowering the noise floor. The noise cleaned up SO MUCH, and the image was EVEN BETTER. I hope this sheds a little more light on how to expose N-Log on the Nikon Z6iii, and really s...

I Investigated the Z6III Flickering Shadows Myself...Unusable?
Переглядів 4,8 тис.4 місяці тому
I've seen some very controversial opinions on the Nikon Z6iii, especially when it comes to flickering shadows. I knew it was time for me to sleuth around to see how bad the issue actually was, so I investigated the flickering shadows on the Nikon Z6iii myself. Shot in N-Raw 12 bit.
Is the Nikon Z6III Good in Low Light?
Переглядів 13 тис.5 місяців тому
*EDIT* In the comparison shots, the Z6iii is on the right and the A7Siii is on the left! There's been a bit of controversy around the Nikon Z6iii since it's release with it's lower dynamic range, "noisy sensor", "flickering shadows". I decided to put it to the test in an actual low light shoot to see if the footage worked. Of course, I shot half of it with my Sony A7Siii to be safe, since it wa...
3 Weeks with the Nikon Z6iii (From a Sony Shooter)
Переглядів 9 тис.5 місяців тому
Everything in this video was shot on Z6iii, and the Sirui Venus 35mm and 100mm anamorphic lenses. Talking head was on the Nikkor Z 24-120. I used a Neewer Sony E to Nikon Z mount lens adapter for the Siruis. The Nikon Z6iii is far from perfect, but I really fell in love with some of the new features. They got me out of my tent (I was camping, not homeless) and shooting some fun photos and video...
This AFFORDABLE Lens is actually AMAZING
Переглядів 1076 місяців тому
Affordable lenses or cheap lenses can be a scary investment, because you never know if it's going to be a worthwhile investment, but I highly recommend this lens to anyone looking for a long lens. One of the best vintage lenses. Filmed this talking head on my new Nikon Z6iii, but all footage from this vintage lens was shot on my Sony A7Siii.
Camera Rigs: How Big is TOO Big? Hiking with Sirui Anamorphics
Переглядів 696 місяців тому
Camera Rigs are awesome for productions, but what about for hiking? Is it worth it to take heavy lenses and big batteries/monitors? The cinematics were shot on a Sony A7Siii with Sirui Venus Anamorphic lenses. I love the cinematic look that comes straight from the sensor with these lenses. Shot on the Darby Wind Cave Trail My Rig: Sony A7Siii Sirui Venus 35mm and 100mm T2.9 Smallrig cage/top an...
bro whih one is the sony footage or th nikon one..pls tell us..thanks
ETTR never fails
This is because N-Log underexposes by 2 stops to protect the highlights. If there aren't highlights to protect you should always overexpose im N-Log.
Kasey from camera conspiracies needs to watch this video, cause his nikon footage is even noisier than your 0 stop footage 😂😂
Love the production quality man, keep it up!
I like the setup. Your wide shot is totally blown out tho, You dont see anything outside the windows and you see the reflection of the lantern in the windows. I'm assuming you just didnt have enough power for the key. Tough with windows
Do you have a link to the podcast, your works looks really good. Keep the videos coming, you got me to buy the z6iii
what boom stand is that? Thanks for the video, very beautiful results with minimal equipment. My kind of setup!
It's just an Impact Combo Boom Stand! They're pretty light, so good for a checked bag on a plane! Starts to get a bit sketchy with a heavy light/softbox setup on the end, though.
the conditions under which you were shooting were with natural changes in light from the scene, lighting effects and other things. so of course you don't pay attention to the flickering. I have had the camera for a week and I have previously tested absolutely all Nikon cameras. And in the z6 III 4k is worse than in the Z6. the noise level is also worse. the auto WB is incorrect, and the ISO on the video always switches with a delay and glitches when recording. I asked 2 more cameras from my friends to compare. everything is exactly the same there. you can calm yourself and say that the camera is normal, but it is not. I did the test again, I will send the link in a separate message or type in the search engine "nikon z6 iii video flickering. what is going on here?" and you will see everything yourself ;)
Yep, I've made other videos that acknowledges the flicker, and it definitely exists. The sensor is pretty noisy as well. But overexposing by a stop or even 2 in controlled conditions completely mitigates any unpleasant noise or any flicker. At least in 6K raw or H.265. I havent shot anything in the 4k raw options. Anyway, I don't shoot with auto settings (WB and ISO), so those issues don't affect me. It performs well for me and I use it for pretty much everything at this point. The colors are great, especially with the RED luts, highlight rolloff is pleasing, but it's not without its problems. The flicker definitely needs to be corrected, because it's unacceptable.
After doing lots of research and your videos giving the information missing about z6iii, i finally bought it and there is nothing that this camera cant do. low light video is very good if you put the right settings. the only thing that would make this camera the best camera is 45 mp sensor but whatever.. this is more than enough if you are not fully professional. some of my shots are in my channel (some of them are recorded when i didnt know what i was doing and learning settings)
I'm glad you like it! I think the 24mp is a good compromise between low light performance, readout speed and image quality, so I'm okay with it there, but I don't do much photo work/cropping.
Nice video. 02 stops over has a colour shift to a bit warm colour when you atop down. Just an observation.
I see that too, subtle but noticeable
Try to use pluging “flicker free” for delete flickering ;)
Such a valuable video ! Thx a lot
This is a great video, thanks for making it. One question is, if in shooting in a very low light location where I have no control of the lighting, am I best using iso 6400 and using ND to bring it down to correctly exposed at f/5.6 for example then open up again to f/2.8? And if setting the zebras midtones to 95 is correct for exposure based off Nikon’s recommendation, what would your 2 stops over put that number at and would you just be setting your aperture correctly from the outset?
Did you find solution with flickering?
As long as I expose correctly it's not an issue, but I saw a rumor somewhere that Nikon was working on a fix.
Great video!!how is the noise performance compare with a7siii or z6ii at iso 25600-40000
I haven't checked! I honestly never shoot on anything but base ISO. The Z6III is much noisier than the A7Siii in general, so I'd imagine that would hold true at those ISOs as well.
@TannerSimpsonMedia Thank you very much 🙏!!!!
👍🙂

Thank you for taking time out to respond. This video is awesome, as a nikon shooter with a Z8 i find myself shooting video but struggle trying to understand exposer and vetting that right. Im not sure if its in your video pipeline, but that will be something awesome to sbare in detail as there are nkt many nikon creators out here in the wild.
Which ISO on the Sony in tour comparison? 12800?
Yessir!
I'd love to see Nikon add pre-record. Even if it's only in the 4k h.265 modes. For sports that's an amazing feature to have. The Canon r6ii does it so the Z6iii should be more than capable.
Never thought of that! It probably wouldn't be very useful for me, but if you're doing sports then definitely.
I 100% agree with you about the video assist being unusable and just downright embarrassing for Nikon to even have on a camera of this stature. I don't shoot with a monitor (I like shooting pretty small and nimble) So I end up shooting without view assist and judge my exposure based on the waveforms. It works but it's definitely not something I love doing.
I use zebras a lot! And try to use a gray card when possible, but with run and gun stuff, zebras don't fail me!
Z50ii?
Close! It is a nikon, but not a z50ii!
Awesome video as always! Love your shots and totally agree with your list. Do you ever get that jello effect? From all your videos, I've never noticed it. When I have a wide shot even if I'm not moving, I can see the sides moving around sometimes and it drives me a bit crazy. And I also get that old XT4 issue with IBIS that when I'm slowly moving the camera from side to side, it sometimes moves jagedly. Let me know if you get a chance! Much appreciated and keep the videos coming!!
Hmm. I'm wondering if it's lens stabilization or just image stabilization in general. I havent noticed it at all, but the stabilization can get a bit janky sometimes.
@@TannerSimpsonMedia Do you typically turn your stab off? I noticed you're on a gimbal! Maybe that's what it is. Also, was using the tamron 35-150 so might be because it's not a Nikon made lens? Good to know you haven't experienced it. More testing to do on my part, ha! Thanks for the response!
Could you Do a how to anamorphic? For example which anamorphic Do you use, what adapter is needed?
Yeah I would agree with all five of your improvements with the Display Assist being my top pick. Im not quite sure how any of the Nikon engineers thought that was acceptable or more importantly useful? The ironic thing is the way the display assist LUT will actually make you under expose which in turn makes you have to correct and lift the footage in post which risks the 'flicker' becoming visible??! If you ETTR I don't really see any flicker issue. Hopefully Nikon can improve this in a firmware update. Oh and new camera is...Z50 ii??
Close! It is a Nikon, but not the Z50ii!
I agree 100% with you! I would also like if the U1/U2/U3 presets activate different modes for photo and videos, so you can activate 3 custom modes for photos and 3 for videos (With my xh2s I have 7 slots for custom settings). And I find the menu to be very messy. They should find a way to make everything easier to find and quicker if you need to change some settings. Like the video main recording menus on blackmagic's or fuji with codecs, log, compression ratio, mb/s, all in the same place. If I need to quickly change from prores hq 4:2:2 24 fps to 240fps I have to do too much steps in the menu because I have to come back and change even the prores to h265. In a run and gun situation like me for sports it's precious time you would use to record action going on
Yeah. For me if they add open gate somehow, it would be the reason to forget about blackmagic FF as a A cam. Cause a lot of clients want to have horizontal and vertical version of a video simultaneously. And open gate helps a lot with this. And flickering - thinking the same as you) Other stuff is not that critical for me.
Sony ick.30 years of video production tells me 1 thing. Friends don't let friends use Sony gear..... Hell I wouldn't even buy gum or candy From a sony shop .
Wow, interesting. I shoot with a Z8 and Z9 and I'll have to see if I get the same results.
I'd love to know your results.
Its jack!!!love your channel and the tips you give with nikon.
Entertaining + Informative - you delivered!
Great work with this video. congrats bro. i have another question. Why z6III show wrong minutes remain on the card? i shoot in my tests in 128gb 2 hours and 45 minutes in H265 4k 10 bit color, but everytime z6III show me 42 minute remaine, 35 min, 37 min. i dont understand why. THX A LOT FOR YOUR VIDEOS. sorry for my bad english
My approach involves setting the zebras to a value of 240, switching the mode to "highlight," and paying close attention to the histogram. This way, I try to capture as much light as possible. One downside with Nikon cameras is the lack of a CineEI feature, like on the Sony FX3. With CineEI, you can adjust the display ISO to show a normally exposed image on the monitor, while the actual file is 1.7-2.0 stops overexposed. Similarly, RED cameras allow ISO adjustments as metadata only, so changes affect the monitor exposure but not the RAW file. For my Nikon Z8, I see two options when shooting in bright conditions: either disable the display LUT (Rec.709) or use an external monitor like the Atomos with PQ color space, which doesn’t clip highlights as the Z8’s monitor does with the Rec.709 LUT.
I actually just made a 1 stop and 2 stop overexposure LUT for my shinobi. Those get me really close when exposing by eye, and keep me from underexposing. I can see Nikon beginning to implement things like this in the future. I imagine a lot of cinema knowledge is coming from the RED acquisition.
Thank you for the very interesting and down to Earth investigation(really nice intro by the way). It shows again that if one wants to put a product/brand down it is always possible. Keep up the good work. Do you have any tutorials on video for beginners ? Cheers !
No u 😘
Love u my boi!
Dude, this is fire. The answer is obviously a huge YES - it's an incredibly powerful camera. The more I shoot with it the more I love the footage - it's a slightly noisier sensor than some but I find it captures more detail than other, less noisy sensors (FX3 etc), and scrubs up very nicely with Davinci Resolve NR. Moving over from Lumix I was worried I was gonna miss the open-gate, but honestly, it's much less of a big deal than expected. Moving from the S5iix to this is kinda like going from a Prius to a sports car.
Thanks man! Honestly the grain pattern isn't really all that bad, so a lot of times I don't even use noise reduction (as long as I overexpose by a stop or two). Open gate and shutter angle are really the only things I would want more from this thing, but I've lived without those for a decade and haven't needed them, so 🤷🏻♂️.
How did you get so clean images? My z6iii makes a lot of very bad noise in the darker areas even at 800iso with correct exposure! I’m going out crazy!
I'm guessing you're shooting in N-Log? First step, turn off the awful display assist LUT that Nikon provides. It's really bad. Makes normal exposure look really blown out. I usually overexpose by 1 to 2 stops while keeping ISO at 800, or 6400 if I REALLY need it and bring the exposure back down in post. I have a video about overexposing and how to correctly bring it down in post on my channel!
@ thank you! It sounds crazy to me that a 3000€ camera gives so much noise even if correctly exposed (I use false color on an external monitor) at 800iso. In photo mode the camera is ok, I don’t know if this is something that could be fixed with a firmware update. I have cheaper apsc cameras with a better image quality so!
I’m still in Canon EF world (90D), but considering switching camera systems. Looked at blackmagic and Fujifilm. What do you think of the z6iii so far? Does it inspire you to get out and shoot and try new things?
I love it. It's the perfect hybrid camera for me! It's extremely capable for both photo and video. I use it for the majority of my projects now. Something I considered pretty heavily before buying was the RED acquisition as well. I was more comfortable buying into the Z Mount ecosystem knowing that there will probably be a solid professional upgrade path to a cinema camera in the future. I love the Blackmagics as well, I think they're incredibly enticing.
@ that’s really helpful; thanks! I might rent it sometime for a camera test. Any exposure tips for n-log?
Yes! Overexpose by a stop or two, and DONT use Nikon's display assist lut. It makes your image look super overblown when it's not even close. So if you expose by eye, it'll be really underexposed. I have another video on my channel about overexposing N-Log.
Which shutter speed did you use? At 24 fps I can’t set 1/48 but on my z6iii I get only 1/40 or 1/50
I just set it to 1/50. You can get a bit closer if you turn on High-frequency flicker reduction, which just enables shutter speed fine tuning. Still not exactly 1/48, but closer. I've shot 1/50th my entire life though.
@ thank you for the answer! However I think this is a great camera but I am really bad impressed regarding the amount of noise in the darker areas even at the base ISO 800. My other camera (fuji xh2s) do so better…
nikon should sponsor you!!! I am gonna buy z6iii because of you. No other channel shows it's performance in the field like you do, especially the lowlight capability. there are channels with 100k+ followers and they cant do real lowlight test by changing the setting of the camera properly but you do it as a new channel. good luck, im looking forward to more videos!!!
Wow! Thanks man, I really appreciate that!
Shots are fire! Everything looks so clean how were you exposing everything? Were you over exposing and at second base ISO? Can't wait for the lighting setup video. Amazing work!
Thanks man! Yep, everything is exposed by one to two stops. With the exception of the main orbiting shot, it was all at second native ISO 6400. I tend to overexposed the second native ISO a little more than the first, just because it's a little noisier than 800.
you are one of my favorite camera youtuber bcs you shoot on z6iii and explain things about it that no one channel shows
Thanks bro! ❤️
This is why all cinematographers "expose to the right" with lighting or aperture.
The only question left is are you doing all that for someone to tell you that’s good or bad, or are you doing it because it makes you happy! Do it for your self, learn, develop and the results will come! Keep you head up!
Needed this thanks so much bro! I just started posting on UA-cam needed to hear this 🙏🏽
Nailed it man!
Thanks bro this was great, solid advice
Hahahaha, love the commentary man, I appreciate it! Love the old school lenses too. I still regret selling all the FD lenses that i had for my A7S back in the day.
Yeah, thanks for this. It is really like going to the gym, indeed. I love this quote that Chris Williamson once referenced - "the magic you're looking for is in the work you're avoiding". It sounds a bit harsh, but it is true. No farmer works without sowing the seeds.
Love that quote, thanks for sharing!
The first one (0 Stops) shows once again that flickering in the background. I really hope Nikon releases an NLOG 2, and perhaps a firmware update to minimalize the flickering
I heard a rumor they were working on a fix! Fingers crossed it's true! If they fix that and their horrendous display assist LUT then this thing would be dang near perfect.
@@TannerSimpsonMedia - Yep. It’s why I’m holding out. Hoping for a fix. Z8 while phenomenal, is too big and heavy when using a stabilizer. Z6 III best bang for the buck, actually even punching well above its price weight
