Not only is co-regulation an evolutionary skill, but it’s an integral part in our children being able to learn how to regulate their emotions on their own someday. Tune in to learn more about how we use our own emotions to support the emotions of our children.

    I’m a 42yo identifying as AuDHD w/a PDA profile and I’m going to write this out and share it with a few people in my life as to how they can help me out without amping up my anxiety and defensiveness, and another option for avoiding that word I abhor: “should.” **I, of course, am working on better understanding PDA, as well as having grace with those around me that don’t have a clue about it … but the ones closest to me whom are empathetic and have a desire to understand and accommodate will be honored to learn this helpful tidbit. 🧡

    You said, "Suggestions can be perceived as demands and lead to power struggle." My mother is the only person I've ever displayed overt PDA tendencies toward, and I think it's because she has a very manipulative speaking style. She actually phrases her demands as if they were suggestions, and when she gives what she intends as "friendly advice," she phrases it as a demand. So, if she actually wants and needs you to do something, she says, "Do you want to do..." And when she means to be friendly, she says, "You need to do this, and do this, and this, etc." It was extremely frustrating trying to grow up with a mother who sounded like she was being demanding while insisting, "I'm just trying to help!" Yet when she needed something done, she couldn't ask outright, and would get angry and berate me for "not listening" (!) when she asked if I "wanted" to do something. OMG! Does that mean she was actually *causing* our power struggles? EDIT: OK, so I realize by saying Mom caused our power struggle, that I'm blaming her, and that's not right. Perhaps a better question would be, "Were our power struggles exacerbated by my mom's indirect style of communication?"

    • @UdderlyEvelyn
      @UdderlyEvelyn 8 місяців тому

      My dad would always say "why don't you X" in a similar fashion, which reads very ambiguous as to whether it is a demand or suggestion even just in language.

    My child freaks out when I say this. When I leave it up to them. Kicks, screams, throws things around. Repeats "what can I do" one million times. My child is 8 and never in his life came up with an idea what to do by themselves. Now over the years television has been the solution as I have three more kids and my capacity to play or do something with my child all afternoon is limited. I can totally see this is a vicious circle but I don't know what to do. As soon as my child has nothing to do they get aggressive.

    • @DelphineTheWorstBladeEver
      @DelphineTheWorstBladeEver 8 місяців тому

      They get aggressive? Maybe teach them patience so they're less entitled. Maybe teach them how to let out aggression in a safe way, and to not hold onto frustration and anger. If your child is aggressive, you need to teach them that's entitled behavior before the world does.

      Could you ask them if they want to help you do whatever you need to do? Maybe making dinner, small work chores to make them feel important? If it's ASD they could just not know how to play, and might find joy in what other kids find boring. Aggressiveness is probably a lack of ability to voice and channel big emotions, in particular frustration. They could also be restless and need to do something physically intense for a while. Maybe a small cardio type circuit for kids might help?

      @@minimushrooom You are very right. I can ask him if he can help me and he will. When we're finished with something like folding towels it all starts over again. "What can I do now???"
