    Great video. Few things that could be done better tho. Should always measure the relief in the playing position and definitely off of any neck rests which flex the neck and skew your measurements. You’re also better off using under-string radius gauges because they ensure consistent playability for each string. Over-string gauges are lazy IMO and the diameters of the strings skew your radius considerably. They should especially not be used for any instruments with larger gauge. Really no need to capo the first fret for action either, just file the slot heights after setting your preferred 12th fret action. Then re-check both. Music Nomad sells great tools however their setup process is waaaaay too beginner-ified and the measurements are way too careful especially with relief.

    I learned the hard way. Live tones and album tones are often never the same. Trying to dial in tones from albums often disappointed me in a live setting. Often lack low end and like a bit more gain live. Dial tones for the area you are playing in. Delay and reverb feel so different in headphones versus an open air stage.

    if you were in a metal band with one other guitar player and liked your clean tones as well as solos being stereo with like a ping pong delay, keeley halo etc, then would it make sense for both guitarists to play stereo rigs during all parts or both guitars being mono for metal rhythm but switching to stereo for certain parts (volume difference considerations), or just staying mono live for practicality and less shit to haul, or maybe going digital for your rig so switching between the mono and stereo wouldn't be a problem necessarily.

    Good video with a lot of useful information. I use a thumbpick exclusively and I agree that nails are necessary to get an even volume for the pick and fingers. I was actually suprised when I learned country guys like Chet Atkins, Jerry Reed, The Reverend Horton Heat etc. play with nails as I only thought it was Classical guitarists who did. I keep my nails shorter than you, exactly the shortest I can get away with while the nails still hits the string with 100% consistency, which turns out to actually be surprisingly short, helping the nail basically be immune to breaking while still allowing me pluck the strings hard in a chicken pickin' style, play bass or keyboard instruments as well as working with my hands in general.

  • @Redneck_Wizard
    @Redneck_Wizard 11 днів тому

    You can also do pinch harmonics with a thumb pick by doing an upstroke and then muting the string with your index finger instead of the thumb like with a downstroke.

    • @mathew_dale

      I wouldn't say that. Since it's multi scale, the low E is still 25.5" and the high E is 25" like PRS. I prefer the thicker string feel under my fingers. I use 11s with a heavy bottom (52) on my PRSs so I go with 11-50 on my Strandbergs but still do 11-50 on Fenders as well.

    The main thing to do is set up all your patches and scenes at gig levels. Don’t dial them in at bedroom levels. And high pass/ Low pass is your best friend. And bring an actual EQ pedal to the show to tune to the room. An EQ pedal is the most important pedal you can use in any situation. Don’t rely on the EQ in the processor you’re using. It’ll never be right in the room. And make sure your patches/scenes are at complimentary levels. Don’t go from clean neck pickup to full bore metal with bridge pickup and have the volumes not match.

I wanna automate effects with my axe fx, send another guitar to a pa/cab, send synths to FOH, and a click to a drummer. But won’t the axe fx take over as the audio interface in my daw? Idk how I’m supposed to send all that out with only the axe fx

    • @mathew_dale
      @mathew_dale 14 днів тому

      If you are using the Axe as your interface you can set the mains from your DAW to come out of Out1 or Out2, but for your needs you'll need to use more outs from the DAW with an interface with more outs. You don't need to use the Axe as the interface (audio device) to automate parameters (MIDI device). You just need to use it as an external instrument to control it via MIDI.

    • @mathew_dale

      My go -to for a while has been the QSC k10 (used here- although you are not hearing the speakers). The k10 has plenty of headroom and dispersion to be used as a stage monitor for guitar. Ideally, you'll want to use something >100W for clean headroom with a drummer. In my experience you can get good results with either an 8", 10" or 12" speaker size. Just look for enough watts of power and a good dispersion pattern (the k10 has a 90º spread as opposed to the 75º spread of the k12)

      I like the QSC cp8s a lot. Compact, 1000W, and very versatile. I like the versatility of a good PA type speaker. Technically speaking there is not much difference in the "Guitar" FRFR and a PA speaker- mostly enclosure (and looks), and the PA enclosure is going to be a bit tougher IMO.

    • @mathew_dale
      @mathew_dale 13 днів тому

      The composite enclosures can be a bit more rugged rather than tolex and plywood that can be used in some guitar cabs. Stereo vs mono depends on your sonic needs. I like to run stereo when possible for delays and reverbs and some modulation effects. I also like to use 2 different IRs hard panned. But that’s not always possible in some cases for certain bands and set-ups. If you can find a bundle price on the cp8s go with 2 so you also have a good small PA when needed and then you always have the option of stereo.

Want "that in the room sound"? Plug it into a power amp and cab. "Nothing could replace gran pappy's 2x12 cab from 1969"? Make an impulse response. Hell, you can even use amps with the Axe-FX if you want...just get an attenuator. Yet some still swear they can hear a difference. Cracks me up. 🤣

    Little late to the party but this video showed up in my feed and I couldn't agree more with most of what you're saying. I think back to when I was a young teenager listening to all of this metal in the 90s and none of that was listen to through any amplifier it was through a crappy radio in my bedroom or the car. When I started to play guitar I didn't really understand how all of this stuff worked and would try so hard to reproduce the tone that I was hearing through a stereo system from my guitar amp and could never understand why I would fail repeatedly... Fast forward 20 years ... I'm not a quick learner I was still trying to do the same thing cuz I didn't understand.... I have a evh 5150 stealth along with a Mesa Boogie triple Crown... I also have a quad cortex and an FRFR cabinet. I realize now if I want to play along with backing tracks in my basement studio then the quad cortex and the FRFR are almost a guaranteed best choice. It can reproduce the studio quality sound that is pristine and exactly what will fit into the mix perfectly. If I turn on my evh amp I can get pretty close but typically I find myself overpowering the studio monitors because the guitar amp itself is just so much more powerful. I used to switch back and forth from modeling to amps, in some sort of frustrated dance to try to get what I was after. Now I have found peace I have found my zen... I have both! It's just a matter of when to use which tool for the job you are after
