GORGEOUS ride in London's BIGGEST forest
Join me on a stunning autumnal morning as I explore a brand new gravel route, heading out into the glorious colours of London's biggest forest... this might be my new favourite gravel ride in London!
This route into Epping Forest, starting in north east London and heading into Essex, was featured by Red Bull as one of London's best routes to explore on a gravel bike - and it didn't disappoint. I even brought myself a little soup with me, as I explored the woods on my Kona Rove Adventure DL.

How many London parks can I cycle to in ONE DAY?!
Переглядів 38414 днів тому
As an unfit, part-time cyclist who struggles for motivation, I decided to get myself out the door and onto the bike by taking on a silly cycling challenge: how many London parks could I ride my bike to in one single day? For this ride I was joined by my friend Rainier aka the @avocado.cyclistas I cycled from south east to south west, through central London and over into east - in search of park...
He accidentally RAN to WINDSOR (so I cycled it!)
Переглядів 556Місяць тому
In the cult British TV comedy Peep Show, there's an episode where the character Super Hans - a chaotic schemester with a taste for drugs and boozing - accidentally runs to Windsor. As luck would have it, the distance between the block of flats in Croydon where Peep Show was set and the centre of Windsor is almost exactly 26 miles - aka the distance of a marathon - and so an idea was born. On a ...

Cutting out the nonsense

Sometimes as a London cyclist you simply can't be bothered with the suburbs - the slow residential roads, the endless traffic lights, and the impatient drivers who wish you didn't exist. The solution is simple - get a train through it and cut out all the nonsense! Bikepacking Bliss: Norfolk, The Long Way Round

On the east coast of England, around 100 miles north east of London, is the historic county of Norfolk. Famous for its flat terrain and its stunning countryside, as well as its historic cities and seaside towns, it's an ideal destination for hiking and bikepacking. And, with its miles of disused train lines now converted to walking and cycling paths, it's a particularly appealing option for tho...

Why bother with UA-cam? Hundreds of pounds on camera equipment; countless hours editing; forcing a camera into our friends' faces. the WORST driving habits (according to cyclists)
Nice video. I occasionally pedal around London parks. Never done Bushey Park. I'll add it to my list.
Thanks! Bushy is very nice, my shots of it didn't do it justice - lots of deer to see and space to explore
Epping Forest is a very beautiful place, I think was the King Henry the V hunting ground. But is my cyling ground! love it! Also, Essex is great place for cycling.
Yes I love Essex for road cycling too... Much flatter than Kent, perfect for me 😅
I’m lucky to live near this beautiful forest so always take rides through it and stopping at high beech is a must where you have a pub and a few places to eat tea coffee ice cream etc
Sounds great, will have to check it out next time
My home roads/paths.
walthamstow is east london not north,
Agree to disagree
@@JakeMay there is no disagree mate. i was born in the stow and the postcode is e17
Presuming I said north east London not north London. If I said north that is definitely wrong
took me a minute, a clean bike is good bike
I think I didn't explain this video very well 😅 I went on a bikepacking trip from Bristol but am so forgetful that my friend had to send my toothbrush back to me in the post 😂
@@JakeMay I literally thought it was a toothbrush for cleaning gunk out fo the chain, and a candle for waxing it. 😅O well, a clean bike is also .. a good bike though.
What’s the sat nav you’re using?
I use a Wahoo Elemnt Bolt (v1) - have had it for four years and find it really reliable and easy to use
ha I ride those paths a lot, you should mention there are a few brutal short sharp climbs as well as a few hair-raising descents.
I think I must have got lucky on this specific route and missed those!
My biggest pet peave is with a bikelane next to a walkway, and then suddenly, for no reason, they just switch sides with each other. It happens a lot in my city and i just can't wrap my head around the stupidity.
Wow so many cyclists in London these days but cycle lanes which we don't have here in Spore so often get run down by Mercedes drivers here😮
There's some good infrastructure here now, and the sheer number of cyclists forces the drivers to take care I think. Plus the 20mph speed limit! Still work to do, far too many people still choose to drive
Glorious video and path !
Glorious!!
I have that Albion ls jersey / gilet combo too🤝
It's a strong combo
👍👍🇮🇳🇮🇳❤❤ Kerala South India
I have been watching your vlog since I was a in Doha 3 years ago, its always interesting to see gloomy UK, and one thing that I noticed, you were enjoying your route, instead of speeding, cheers
Very gloomy lately! First sun today in a week. And yes definitely not going fast 😂 thanks 👍
9:38 - HAHAHAHAHA!! lol
Cursed 😅
Man! I wish I could have joined you
Future gravel adventures to follow!
Get 2 feed bags that attaches to your drop bars and stem to hold your water bottles, then get you a full frame bag to get more storage for your gear.
Would be a good option for bigger trips! How easy is it to still ride on the tops?
I think upgrading to a Buff beanie and an Abus lock is more advisable. Not much more money but something you will likely to use also outside of adventures, so they will quickly be more cheap IMHO.
Thanks for the tip. Do buff beanies look much different?
@ they can be used also as scarf and in my opinions look better. You should check them out.
This made me so excited to come back to UK
Thank you my mate
Avacado cheated you out of those coffee's, asi heard he was late as well, can't be later than late. Good going for circuit, but I bet you could add another 5 or more parks if you would of went north to Hampstead heath, then over to Hackney Marshes and QE park. We know you got it in you.
Great point actually! I'll bring it up next time I see him 😂 I probably cycled past about 5 parks without evening realising it. Cheers!
Hahahaha woah woah...don't lie Jake..we were both late..and you were just later (got it on vid 😂😂😂) 😂😂😂 Jake Trying to lie some more haha
@avocado.cyclist I've never lied in my life!!! 😯
@JakeMay hahahaha another lie right there 😂😂
why dont you use a bikerack and panniers? way easier to pack and unpack...
I don't want pannier racks on my bike all year round
@@JakeMay maybe have a look at ortlieb Quickrack if no mounting points are available. on the other hand: your bike has mountain points and it is 4 screws only... :-)
They're TOKEN (an excuse) for a bike lane, just painting a white line in the kerbs that everyone but bikes ignore
i miss riding around london town !
also bro you been pronouncing my name wrong.. it should be pronounce as H-A-N-D-S-O-M-E hahha ;-)
we did some serious Junk Miles that day ! hahha
100k of junk 😂
Very enjoyable London Parks Grand Tour 👍 How was the coffee ? Well done for the 100km !
I've managed to escape the coffee fine so far 😈
Leeeedoh ! 😛
Rode this on Tuesday, Paddington to shoreham via the river Wey. Great route.
Ah didn't realise you could join it all the way to Paddington! How did you find that section of the route out to Guildford?
Yes!When you are a minister off the roads in your country and you are cycle friendly, then do it the right and only way.Make a proper cycle lane and not just a tiny lane on the normal road!Off course we in the Netherlands are years ahead off the other countries, but that doesn't mean you can invent lanes who are better, because we have years and years experimenting with those. You must do it the right way or don't do anything. If your voters allow it..🤣🤣
So underratted pin me!
Bikes make any excuse and this is not all lanes...l only a small percentage and not forever.... complain complain complain. Omfg
Shut up
Well done David, and well done Jake for filming and providing some support on the way round. I also ran and throughly enjoyed it. Bring on next year
This is class
Great effort David, and thanks for the pint too!
Nice to meet you mate! Quality effort on the fancy dress and the 3D printed trophy!
Pretty sure I recognise one of the runners. Seen him gobbing off around town in a Swindon shirt, going on about Oxford United being a bunch of C****.
😂 all that running away from Oxford United fans must be how he's so fast at the marathon
LOOL and the deer convo! haha
bro this is cool!
Cheers bro ❤️
Fun idea 😄👍🏻
Cheers PAM!
Well done David! Great effort
I ran past you and you cycled past me plenty of times, nice to put a name to a face. Thanks for your support along the way and see you next year 👀
Well done on doing it!
Thanks for the company on the cycle and well done David!
Nice to meet you mate, cheers for the meal deal storage 😂
Gedonnn David
Geddon
finally all the strange ''I ran accidentally ran to windsor'' captions on stuff make sense
Well done David and thanks to Jake for supporting him!
Of course cars and delivery vehicles must be parked in the bike lane. Else they hinder the traffic .... So they don't hinder bike traffic ....🤔
Why should drivers getting somewhere faster be prioritised over the safety of cyclists?
@@JakeMay I dunno … I often see, in our small town that instead of parking (for a short period) on the street, motorists stops in the bike lane or on the sidewalk. And the utterly stupid reason I hear is that motorists don’t hinder the traffic, but Hey! They are stopping me and other bikers and pedestrians. But as I heard from either your or another’s video - cars are the norm. Our towns and cities are adopted to motorists. Students from the University of Gothenburg came to our town - Vänersborg - to see how it could be made more attractive and the defined the town with two words: CARS and WATER. Cars were everywhere, and we are talking of a town centre with some 12,000 inhabitants.
Very close to my place is a shared bike/pedestrian lane that makes a sharp turn around the corner of a house and where the lane is NARROW. A month ago the street was repaired/refurbished and new tarmac was applied. However where the bike lane crosses the street there was a 2-3" curbstone. So I bike on the street not to ruin my bike.
Having looked at the route on Komoot, there are several miles where it is on private land with no right of access for the public. This makes things very difficult for us local MTB riders who are trying to foster a good relationship with land owners. Perhaps you could amend the route to follow the PROWs. The countryside is not a free for all, go where you like place...........
There was one section we accidentally went on RSPBA land (near Snape maybe) where cycling wasn't permitted and tried our best to get off of it when we realised. From memory everything else was completely fine and legit. Unless there's somewhere specific you're referring to?
@@JakeMay The Komoot route is the worst compared to your actual Strava route which itself is pretty grim, the most notable being: Route cross Woodbridge Golf Course, the whole length of the section from the B1084 through the Chillesford Lodge Estate all the way to Orford, the RH turning off the road at the edge of Tunstall Forest towards Snape Maltings + the back-loop beside the river, two excursions off the Sailors Path to Aldeburgh, an excursion off Saxmundhan Road just before the mini roundabout in Aldeburgh, the route across farm land off the top of Thorpeness Common, route through Vale Farm and Nuttalls Farm near Frostenden Corner, most of route between Sotterley and Shadingfield by Shadingfield Hall, whole of route through Rookery Park golf course. All those areas mentioned are private land with no right of access for the public. Do you actually use an Ordnance Survey map for navigation or do you just "wing it" and go where you like?
As you point out original the Komoot link was not an accurate reflection of where we rode, and many of the specific points you mention above we went nowhere near in the end - I've changed the Komoot link to make that clearer (not sure what went wrong there). There was one occasion we realised we weren't allowed to be cycling we did our best to get off immediately, and the rest of the time we were conscious to be polite the whole way round, aware of where we were riding and any shared paths etc, and didn't come across any problems. We obviously don't want to affect relationships between local riders and private land owners. I was actually following a friend's route on this occasion so trusted the research but will be more careful next time.
Ive had 2 bikepacking trips now. Norfolk and the weather was bloody hot. And then the northdowns way, windy and warm
Sounds great! Already looking forward to the longer, warmer days to come...
@@JakeMay I didn't get chance to ride this year. I really missed being out.
I was cringing. Waiting for the inevitable to happen, for you to say the sleeping bag was made of down. Then you said it's vegan and I literally squealed with joy. You've got a new subscriber.
Hope you enjoy the vids!
