HELMS BAKERY
Patience, everyone, patience. That's what the city needed in anticipation of the re-opening of the Los Angeles institution, Helms Bakery. Running from 1931 to 1969, the Helms Bakery delivered freshly baked bread to all corners of the city in their iconic blue and yellow delivery trucks. Then, after the bakery closed in 1969, the place finally opened back up last month, after 55 years. So on a channel that is based on destinations and cafes, this one exhibits both. And by the look of how popular it is, it'll be around for a while.

NORTHRIDGE
Переглядів 87День тому
Here we go, deeep into the heart of the San Fernando Valley. When people hear the neighborhood of Northridge, they might think of the catastrophic 6.7 magnitude earthquake in 1994. But the reason why we're going is to visit California State University (CSU) Northridge. I've mentioned before that I enjoy visiting college campuses for the unique architecture and bike infrastructure, and this one ...
WHITLEY HEIGHTS

Another day, another ride into the hills! I love exploring the neighborhoods in the hills, and I think by now I've learned to expect the usual steep, twisty hills, especially when the neighborhood has the word, "Heights", in its name. On this ride, we go to Whitley Heights, and it sure lives up to the name. Situated just north of Hollywood, Whitley Heights was developed in the early 1900s with ...

I don't think there's a more perfect video to be released on Thanksgiving, because on this ride the gang is back together! Given how long it's been that the four of us rode together, it was only right to choose a ride to the other side of the city to a neighborhood called Victor Heights. What was an area that drew many Italian immigrants in the early 1900s, we see the last remaining Italian mar...
PAN PACIFIC PARK

In a city big on concrete and short on green spaces, it's a welcome oasis to ride around one of the bigger parks in Los Angeles, Pan Pacific Park. In the heart of the city, with Melrose to the north and the Grove across the street, Pan Pacific Park is filled with playgrounds, grassy hills, various sports fields, and a surprise river of sorts. And populating these areas are families, dogs, skate...
WESTERN HEIGHTS

I really had to zoom into Google Maps for this one. You'd think by the name it'd be a lot more conspicuous, but Western Heights is a teeny, tiny, mid-city neighborhood pushed up against the 10 freeway. For such a small neighborhood, however, it really packs a punch. Many of its residences have either been bought by notable historical figures or have been filming locations by a number of popular...

Sometimes you know what's coming and you have to mentally prepare for the sufferfest. You know it's going to be challenging, and you know it's going to be painful, but you endure, fight, and make it to the other side stronger. On this ride, we head to Bel Air to do a climb up Bel Air Road. I've never been up there before because it doesn't connect with Mulholland Drive on the top of the mountai...

Happy Halloween, everyone! This ride is full of some spooky cycling, including a haunted mansion, scary steep hills, and architecture straight out of a horror movie. All in a ride to a small neighborhood called Beverly Crest. A fairly new neighborhood, incorporated only in 2008, this one is perched high in the hills, between Bel Air and Franklin Canyon, full of big, beautiful homes. But of cour...
DODGER STADIUM, STRIKE 1

I thought I had found the perfect time to do this ride. Post season, National League Championship Series, the day before game 5, let's go to Dodger Stadium! Across town, a cafe aptly named Good Friend on the way, we were riding high. Then we get to the stadium, and the moment we get through the gate, security tells us to turn around. Arrgh!! We should've dodged that guy. Instead, we go as far a...
VERMONT KNOLLS

Today we go around the world right here around LA. We head to an area of town we don't visit often, South LA, to a neighborhood called Vermont Knolls. It happens to be where the office of the mayor is located, which also happens to be across from a worldly cafe. We did need to eat, too, though, so after riding through Vermont Knolls, past SoFi and The Forum, we go to a fun podcast studio/cafe i...

Time to channel our inner Denzel because today is Training Day! The plan was to go to a cafe (of course), then the new $250 million training facility of the Los Angeles Charges, the city's newest football team, in El Segundo. But like the movie, the day turns into so much more than what was planned. Not only do we visit the training facility of the Chargers, but also the training facilities of ...

Every now and then, it's nice to stay close to home, especially when you're short on time! In this video, we head down the spectacular California incline to the Santa Monica beach, then go one beach over to Will Rogers where we pick up a climb called Temescal. When I feel like putting in miles, I don't have to look much further than Palos Verdes. From our starting point in Santa Monica, it's past Venice, past the airport, and past all of the South Bay beaches - Manhattan, Hermosa, Redondo. Usually, we make a full circle around the peninsula, but this time we go only half way and then go up a climb called Hawthorrne that bisects the peninsula, going u...

When there's a heat wave, we head to the ocean waves. This time, it's to Carbon Beach, aka "Billionaire's Beach". What was once a private beach, it was forced to turn public in 2007. While most of the homes are right on the beach, there is a little neighborhood in the mountains right next to it. It's a small, of course exclusive neighborhood, and most importantly during a heat wave, it faces th...

Is there a lake in Toluca Lake?! That was the impetus behind this week's ride to the San Fernando Valley neighborhood. To get there, we take Benedict Canyon up the hills of Beverly Hills, then along the drive of Mulholland Drive, down the canyon of Coldwater Canyon, and then wind our way find the lake of Toluca Lake. From the satellite images, it looks like it exists, but in reality, it is surr...
Des Croissants de Paris is legit if you can handle heavy duty French dairy. Helms is next to our office HQ. I think they are making improvements but they have already taken a few things off the menu because difficulty staffing the kitchen. I hope they adjust their prices and create a more shaded patio. We have been waiting for 8 years or it to open lol. My wife desk stairs straight down to the front of the new “bakery”. Our window is right above F.O. Front door.
@sandrochiavaro7831 oh, give me all the French butter haha! Have you had Petitgrain yet in SM? Wait for the New Year's ride for that one😁. That's so cool your office is right there at Helms!! What a great location. But agreed that there is room for improvement.

Glad I found this one... I used to work up Nichols Canyon! You took the same route I drove to an interior design office up in the canyon on La Cuesta Drive, just below Mullholland! There are two famous houses designed by John Lautner in the area. The curved roof Garcia house, used in "Lethal Weapon 2" is just above on Mullholland, and Chemosphere (the round one on the column) is located below that lookout overlooking Universal Studios. It's kind of hard to see it due to the trees! Look for both on the next ride! 😀🚲

@christophermyers3758 right?? It's so hard to believe that it's being moved.
WOO-HOO... CLOWNERINA by Jonathan Borofsky is still in Venice, a local landmark! 🤗🤡
@christophermyers3758 YESS!! It has a prominent feature in one of my favorite books of 2022, Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow. They're making a movie or series out of it so I'm hoping Clowneria will get some airtime😄

@@ayaambessa hey! I use a gopro 8 black.
BRAVO! What an incredible ride! I lived and worked in West Hollywood, and am quite familiar with the Bel Air area, due to having worked for interior design offices with client's who lived there. FYI... That long rock wall with the "lollipop" looking trees is the former "Beverly Hillbillies" mansion, now owned by Lachlan Murdoch (son of Rubert), who paid $150 million. Years ago, while in college, I was able to look through the infamous gate shown on the TV show, and could see the mansion. The new entrance gate is a little bit north. Also, at the "fork" in the road... Bel Air Road and Bel Air Court, near that round mirror, the gate with the long driveway on the left, was the former mansion of Zsa Zsa Gabor, and the mansion, of recently departed Quincy Jones, above that at the end of Bel Air Place! If you do this again, going north on Bel Air Road, turn right on Cuesta Way just past the #480 marker, where it dead ends at the gate of Jay Z & Beyonce! Really enjoyed this video and loved the music! 🤗
@christophermyers3758 OMG I HAVE TO GO BACK NOW!! I wish I had known, I def would've pointed all this out, especially Beyoncé!! We rode by her Malibu gate in the Paradise Cove ride😉. I knew about Quincy's house only bc he passed that very same day I rode through. Thanks so much for the info, so cool to know some history behind all these houses!😊
