    Talking about Roman logistics is really impressive, until you start learning Chinese history. Caesar and his 50000 is impressive, but around 200 BC the Qin empire had a 700000 man army.

    For a person from humble origins to take a principled stand against odds is very honorable for me. Normally, people born with a silver spoon in their mouth who never got too much hardship can be more naïve and take on those risky but principled stances, even with potential bad consequences. But as you said, both Justinian and Theodora came from humble background. When you struggle for living and being exploited by a lot of people around you everyday, it’s difficult for you to take the high road when it comes to a principled stance.

    3:28 Well, actually, colonial slaves could also be elevated to important positions : educators, tutors but also stewards, foremen etc... and just as in Roman times, once freed, they may even become prosperous landowners in their turn, with slaves at their service ; in truth, it wasn't that different, it's only the historical/geographical context that really changes. The descendants of these freed slaves who became owners still exist today without necessarily being aware of it... until the day they decide to do research on their family tree.

    I would... absolutely not classify Agrippa's blockade fleet meeting Antony's in the fog an accident, and I am honestly not sure why Historia Civilis would even bring up the framing of it being one. I mean, I don't know if I'd call it baiting Antony either- his fleet absolutely had to try and break the blockade, otherwise his legions would starve and it would just be a matter of time until either his weakened, starved army was smashed by Octavian's legions, or the legions defected and brought Antony to Octavian as a prisoner. I'd more say the smaller, lighter ships were probably just out there to patrol- to make sure Antony couldn't catch the blockade by surprise in the fog, and to probably try and catch any supply ships trying to use the fog as cover to slip by.

  • @scholargrove
    @scholargrove 7 днів тому

    Yeah, Historia Civilis tries way, way too hard to try and launder the Donations of Alexandria. Seemingly, they just... decided this was a good idea for Antony, when the only thing it could do is make himself an enemy of Rome, giving away Roman provinces and openly making his children royalty (which Historia Civilis then tries to paint Octavian bringing up as 'twisting the truth,' and 'not what Antony was doing' when it's... very obviously what Antony is doing). I think the anti-Octavian... well, brainrot, just sank in too much here. They wanted to try and paint Antony as this glorious visionary and architect of the later tetrarchy and split of the empire, and just... forgot, that Cleopatra was not a Roman governor.

    Fun fact; the Jin Dynasty was killing itself in court intrigue immediately after the Fall of Wu and disintegrated into a resumed civil war (this time among themselves) in less than a decade, resulting in China being split into 16 different kingdoms as more warlords and foreign invaders took over, so this period of Chinese history never actually stopped until centuries later. It took until the Tang Dynasty for sanity to return.

    There are two theories I like about the secret history of Procopius. One is that it was what they mentioned-a commission from a jaded nobleman as a joke or guilty pleasure read. The other is that Procopius wrote this book as an exit strategy. With such a fresh dynasty and all of Justinian’s gambles, Procopius may have written this to endear himself to whoever managed to pull off a successful coup.

    • @historystudentreacts
      @historystudentreacts 8 днів тому

      Huh, interesting theories, the latter definitely sounds like something Procopius might have done.

    I feel like the Persian mistakes at the battle of Dara shows the difficulty of communication and coordination during ancient battles. The battle plan is pretty simple for our modern perception of tactics: flanking and encirclement, how hard could it be? But in reality, it is far more difficult to whip your troops into formations and adjust without instant communication like a walkie-talkie. This reminds me of that infamous battle of the Trebia River. The Roman center broke the Carthaginian center, but instead of turn around to help their encircled rear, the Roman center simply marched away from the battlefield. But this blunder is probably also a combination of chaotic communication (the commander probably thought the entire battle went well just like the center) and difficulty of whipping up the troops back into formation after a tough battle (especially if they already break up formation into chase mode, and patching up the wounded). This reminds us that ancient battle isn’t RTS game, you can’t expect an entire group of soldiers following your orders with a click of mouse within a few seconds.

    V.good, clear commentary. We the UK, via our original church, rejected Roman initial solicitations & blandishments at the arrival here of Augustine, thus retaining its holy status, then handing on this same spiritual legacy to the US via the Pilgrims. 1:36:45 It did set the general character of American imperialism on a student trajectory though. Our imperialism was one of influence, military diplomatic, and economic, but not typically of profit conquest. We would conquer Puerto Rico, the Philippines, the territory to connect the east coast to the west coast, and Hawaii, but no matter how heavy our band (or boot) in Latin America, we did not conquer it, we did not take legal or political possession of it.

    22:20 while your talk here would heavily apply to the army, interestingly the Navy was extremely meritocratic. Nelson himself was only from the middle class as was the vast majority of captains and officers. As for “was the Navy seen as a respectable career to serve in?” The simple answer is yes and no. Was it respectable, yes as Britains Navy was the most superior in the world and the most well regarded and famous. However, no in the sense that many of the Gentry and Aristocracy didn’t take to well to the idea of Naval service. Some did especially the young teenage sons of ex-naval captain who would go onto become midshipmen and work there watch the ranks. Tho you didn’t need special privileges to also obtain this rank either, a naval captain could sponsor anyone to become a midshipman. It was if they wished to progress from here that stuff became minority blocked as they’d be expected to take a career test for promotion. However, some would promote without testing due to the necessities of war. But overall much of the aristocracy didn’t like the idea of serving on naval ships that would be away for years at a time, would mere extent good sir catching diseases on, didn’t allow for the same amount of comfort as one would wish serving in a land based job, and one could not just buy their commission but would actually have to pass proper test to even gain the privilege of asking for one - to note two of the most skilled careers in the British military at the time were engineers and naval captains as they actually required their cadets to study and be smart to achieve their certificate and ranks.
