Heaton Lodge Junction - Great Progress This Last Week.. And New Extension Carts Land!
This week the main story has been the delivery of 5 new steel extension carts. These buffer up to the main layout to provide a mobile 6'x4' extension per cart. In this video I'll talk about how I'm extending the width of the other side - with shelving units!
From next week we are going to totally scenic and detail an 8'x12' section of the new marshalling yard from the ground up. And as fast as possible while keeping the meticulous quality seen on Phase 1 of Heaton Lodge.
Thanks For Watching!

This layout is amazing, can public visit and admire in person?
Thanks yes it’s going out again in about a year when this phase 2 extension is finished. I’ll be publishing dates / venues nearer the time. Thanks for watching 👍
Its taken me 4 years to be nowhere finishing my 5 foot 4mm cameo layout....your dedication to this ground breaking project is admirable. I lose my mojo for months on end - do you have a set number of days/hours you try and get down? I'm a musician, and I try and force myself to do a minimum 16 hours study/practice a week, but I dont have (or feel that I need to have) the same discipline when it comes to the modelling.
Thanks Nick for the kind words. I can’t really explain why I’ve not lost my enthusiasm although I do have some bad days. I think because there’s a bigger picture for me in getting the whole project in front of the public definitely helps. And because I finished phase 1 which took 8 years phase 2 is more manageable (I think). It also helps doing these videos! Good luck with your layout tho it doesn’t matter how big or small they are all fun and that’s what it’s all about. Best wishes. Simon
Cheers Simon, appreciate the reply. The Healy scene will be something to behold once completed, it's gonna blow peoples socks off
Well done! The river looks very realistic, and that's a lot of track to lay! Greetings from the @Kingsviewmodelrailway
Wow, what a project! The knack for good soldered joints is to tin the rail first by putting the iron on the inside of the track and apply the solder to the outside - that way you know the track is hot enough to melt the solder and get a good connection. Tin the dropper wire the same way (apply the solder to the wire, not the iron!) and then iron to inside of rail and dropper wire to the tinned area of the track until they flow together. Job done! The soldered joint should look nice and shiny - if it's gone dull you've burnt off the flux and potentially made a bad joint so worth redoing. Good luck, keep up the great work!
That’s great advice Steve thanks for that. Also thanks for the kind words. Best regards, Simon
Fantastic work! Small nit at 2:13 - your caption says "Heavy MGR Trains", not Heavy MGR Trucks". My proof-reading skills can be a curse - sorry! Keep up the great work! 🙂
Haha my mistake! All the best Steve
Simon, are you the only person building this mammoth 🦣 layout, track weathering, buildings, wiring , scenery. Steve
I’m the only person working on the layout yes. That said Tim Horn from Tim Horn Baseboards laser cuts the large building. It’s quicker working on your own so I’ve learnt to work fast. Thanks for watching Stephen 👍
Simon, the amount of realism on your layout is truly amazing, especially the point motors and rods controlling the points, ❤️ Are any parts of the point motors and associated bits 3 D printed, I am in awe of your talent, Steve
I’ve got to be honest I didn’t build the points they were beyond me. I had a chap build them for me. I believe he scratchbuilt the dummy point motors. I added a load more detail and more rods etc. They do look good but can be temperamental in operation
Simon, is this your layout or a club, and if it is yours, did you rob a bank or something 😊. How do you get to any part past your arm length, and is there an end goal on size, Steve
Hi Stephen, yes it’s my layout I began building it in 2013 and finished phase 1 of it in 2019. I’m not in a club. What you’re seeing now is the building of phase 2. I funded the phase 1 by selling a business I’d started and remortgaging my house. The end goal is to take the layout to the general public by bolting on to out of town shopping centres and charging a small entry fee Thanks for watching 👍
Also … it’s easy to get to any part of the layout by moving the mobile steel carts which much of the extension of phase 2 is built on.
Good pub
I’ve been many times it certainly is!
Great idea to do the fully sceniced section, I'm sure it will motivate you a lot when maybe enthusiasm starts to flag. Nice to see the Western as well 😊
Cheers John I’ve been wiring this first section all day today ! 👍
Please invite pete waterman down to take a look. Be a great video
😀
Wills do a corrugated asbestos sheet which is closer to O gauge tin sheet.
Cheers I’ll go for that one then 👍
Hi Simon, rather than have to learn to 3D model and print, might it be worth approaching some companies that do this such as West Hill Wagon Works or 3 Peak Models? They might be willing to expand their range?
Thanks for that. Tim Horn who does the baseboards has offered to resin print bits for me. The problem is a lot of what I need is stuff no one else would buy eg funny cone shapes and pipes for the cement factory etc. Thanks again 👍
@britainsbiggestmodelrailwa1428 Might also be worth looking at some 28mm wargames pieces. Warhammer 40,000 might have some pipes that might work, as they tend to be "heroic" (ie over) scale.
Great idea I’ll look at that. Thanks again
Good work Simon. Highlight of my week, viewing wise. Where would some of us be without model railways to keep us going 👍💜😊✌️
This is true, I’m looking forward to doing this diorama as part of the layout. Scenic modelling I do miss! All the best 👍
Love the Western!
It was a guests and a Masterpiece Models product. Beautiful loco
I must start by saying that I'm in awe of what you have built and how hard you have worked on the upgrade/remodelling. However, as an ex-driver of some 35 plus years (in the West Midlands area) would you permit me to query the concrete sleepers in the sidings? This is not a criticism (and I do understand the horrific expense of track etc and the wonderful donations from Peco) but is this an accurate depiction of the area you are portraying? I ask out of curiosity as much as anything because I worked into and out of places like Tinsley, Toton, St. Mary's (Derby),Washwood Heath, Bescot, Longbridge Sidings (The Austin to most Brummies of my age group) Gloucester South and a few other places and I don't recall concrete sleepers in any of those yards. If it's "artistic licence" then fair do's but as I said, it's not a criticism just a curiosity. Maybe my old memory is failing me and perhaps I did see concrete sleepers in yards - my memory fails me on many other things these days so don't worry - but I don't recall it with any clarity. Keep up the smashing work though. I'm lovin' it. 👍
No I really appreciate the feedback. I’m sure you’re right about the concrete but as you say it was donated by Peco. I think once it’s been heavily weathered and ballasted it’ll be vastly toned down. Not the point I know so yes I’ll have to put it down to artistic license! Thanks for your support and for watching 👍
Great video Simon. Really looking forward to seeing progress on the two boards.
Cheers Geoff I’m looking forward to it too 👍
Are you adding any support for the baseboards on those steel frames to prevent them sagging over time?
There are 4 steel crossmembers in every frame to prevent this 👍
Simon, as someone who has built and exhibited a layout ( Liverpool Lime St.), I am absolutely amazed at your vision and boldness to take on such a project. It is an amazing layout, I have not seen it in person but enjoy watching your weekly videos. I imagine there are periods in time particularly when you are working down there on your own when you wonder what you have started and if you have done the right thing. To my knowledge no one single person has taken on such a challenge before especially to make it all portable ( How many articulated lorries!!), it is truly amazing, do you have no help from any friends! Good luck with it, keep up the good work!
Just so you know, Right hand drive Concrete Agirators Mix Counter Clockwise (Barrel up in rearview mirror) and Clockwise in discharge if viewed from behind. Left hand drives are opposite. This has to do with road camber and balance of truck whilst driving with a live load.
Never knew that thanks. Interesting stuff 👍
Mercedes mixer trucks - when in charge the drum will spin counterclockwise, whereas the Iveco trucks - when in charge will spin Clockwise, both right hand drive.
@@e575fhothis would be a peculiarity based on European standards but here in Australia they are as I described and in the US of A they are opposite and this comes down to road camber and safety.
I’ve started to really look forward to these videos…I’m always left with a sense of fascination combined with a sense of disbelief at the sheer size of the project…thanks for taking us along with you on this incredible project Oh…and the scratch built tower looks excellent 😎
Thank you. When I did Phase 1 Heaton Lodge I wrote regular posts on RM Web. The videos are a lot more work but they do motivate me too. Thanks for watching 👍
"Leave in a good frame of mind"....such sage advice, especially when various things may be trying one's patience.✊👍
It is important I reckon. I’ve left cursing on a couple of occasions then had a couple days off! Hope you’re well and thanks for watching
Your right about being slightly mad. I know my self. With having a layout in the loft & classic motorcycles in the garage.
I think you have to be a bit eccentric but there’s worse things to be I’m sure!
I'm loving this channel. How or Why i haven't noticed it before I did, I really dont know but thank you for sharing regardless. As a resident of the North East Tyne Yard was my local, they had a shunters cabin, at the North end of the Yard, where the lines for through MGR and freight traffic, I dunno about Healey Mills. I was wondering if you'd be putting them in too. Easy for me to say, your building the things I know. I was just thinking most yards probably would've had them. Sorry if it seems I'm trying to tell you how to build stuff, when I haven't got a clue where to start myself, I'm honestly just wondering. You may get a few more questions of this ilk, so I apologise in advance. Keep up the excellent work, very enjoyable watch.
Hi Mickey yes there’s lots of building going on the marshalling yard, admin building, mess rooms & staff quarters etc. From this next video there will be a lot more hands on stuff. I drove over Tyne Yard earlier today there is still loads of bogie coal wagons parked up there. Thanks for watching and your support! All the best.
@britainsbiggestmodelrailwa1428 lot of ballast wagons too. Plenty engineering trains get filled there. Not a great deal else. Went to the bankside many moons back at Healey Mills, was after some of the locos for sight amongst the scrapped locos. Wanted to get them underlined before they were turned into razor blades. Sad sight indeed.
I'm lost for words. Just......WOW!!!!
Thank you 👍
Hi Simon, I think you'll need to modify the cement mixer cabs for something more in keeping with the layout era and Blue Circle, The Mercedes Benz Actros range wasn't introduced until 1996 ?
Yes but don’t forget the new era being modelled this time round is the year 2000 onwards. Everything will be EWS/Colas etc..so I figured the Actros would be ok 👍 All the best
@@britainsbiggestmodelrailwa1428 oh, sorry, I didn't realise it was going to be set at a later date , The Mercs will be perfect 👍👍
Hi Simon. For 3D CAD work for the buildings, I advise Autodesk Fusion 360. It's free for personal use. Can be a bit of a pain to get started with, but very powerful. Might be able to help out a bit?
This is a mammoth task! How did it all start! How have you got to this point? Is it totally self funded?👏
It’s a long story..! I sold a business and started building Heaton Lodge phase 1 back in 2013 finishing it in 2019/20. What you’re now watching is Heaton Lodge phase 2 being constructed. Once this is finished in 18 months or so it’ll go out to the public bolted onto where the public already go - shopping centres/National Trust properties etc. Hopefully then I can start making some money back and entertain everyone at the same time! Best regards
If you still need any help with real water and moving scenery, I'd be happy to help. I have over 20 years of model railway experience on absolutely massive scales.
Thank you I might take you up on that
I'm currently in talks with my local council to get permission to build a simulated 35-mile track in a closed down railway tunnel from the 1800s. This is approximately half a mile or 759.96 ft. There is another 5 and a half mile tunnel, which, if I can get permission, will simulate Kings Cross to Edinburgh Waverley, which is about 392 miles. In a 4mm scale, that would need over 27,000 ft, or approximately 5 real length miles. I did have a oo gauge railway that was built in a 1 mile tunnel. However, after years of struggling to maintain such an old structure, I had no choice but to hand the ownership back to the council.
Healey Mills only shut completely a few years ago. I was there when the last of the sheds were removed.
When exhibiting my layouts at shows, people get talking and the old, "how much perspiration / how much inspiration..." frequently crops up. I always say it's 100% observation. I think the observation of the prototype is why this layout is outstanding.
Sod all the naysayers & the green eyed brigade with the negative comments, you've built this to your spec & your abilities,we all wish we could do the same,I usually watch a few videos of model railways like yours,River Road (Boomer diarama) Dean Park,Deresley (before it was put into hibernation) & a few others that I can't remember off hand (Chadwick ?) we are all individuals & have individual tastes,& whether we build a layout from a real place & whether we build 1 from our own imagination is what makes the hobby so diverse 👍
Totally agree Steven. I guess if you put your head above the parapet you’re going to get shot at! Thanks for watching 👍
I'm not being rude to other YTs, but I always save your videos until last, I always look forward to them and they offer so much especially being so far north. I wish I had the funds to contribute toward the build. Please video whatever you want and talk about whatever you want, I'm never bored
I do tend to waffle sometimes but I’ll try and do different things on the layout! Thanks for your support just watching the videos makes them worthwhile doing! All the best. Simon
Another cracking video! Not sure if this comes across as ignorant, but as a OO gauge modeller, I haven't experienced O gauge for real. So the sense of scale with what you are doing, I (and maybe others) might not fully appreciate what you are doing. In one of your next video updates, would it be possible to include something OO gauge (like rolling stock or buildings) in the Healey Mills marshalling yard, so we can truly see rhe scale of things! For fun, maybe stick something N gauge down as well. Hope that isn't coming across as negative - it really isn't. I'm in awe of what you are doing. Best regards, Tim..
Hi Tim, no problem at all I take your point it’s a very good suggestion. In the next video I’ll show the difference in size! Thanks for watching! Best regards Simon
Hi Simon I may have missed this in the past but how do you run the layout. any sort of automation if not how many operatives do you need to run a busy layout........Tony
Hi Tony, it was automated first time round but with a manual override. This time round it’s probably going to be just manual DCC as it’s just going to be too costly to reliably automate it 👍 Cheers. Simon
It is all coming together…. 👍
Thanks. Yep I think so !
Love the philosophy of taking this layout to the sort of venues you have in mind ,similar I guess to the Pete Waterman roadshow and Chester Cathedral but shopping centres etc mean I assume you will reach a wider audience hopefully. Just out of curiosity how many helpers do you need to move this beast about ?
Hi John, I usually try to assemble a team of 6 to dismantle and transport the layout. I’ll put the call out nearer the time but hopefully it’ll be ok. Thanks for your support 👍
Could you show us how you create such fantastic coal loads in your wagons, they are the best that I have seen . Fantastic , thank you 👍
No problem I might do this on this weeks video actually good idea 👍
Could you please show us how you get such fantastic coal loads in your wagons . They are the best I’ve seen 👍
Yes Paul I think I’ll squeeze this in on the next video Thanks for the compliments 👍
This layout is a "tiny" bit bigger than my N gauge layout 😅. Fantastic layout ! Cheers Euan
Size isn’t everything Euan 😀 Thanks for your kind comments
Supper layout looking forward to seeing wen it's out about👍
Thanks & so am I 👍
Love it! Are you doing any tours in 2025 or are they all in 2026?
Realistically it will be 2026 I think. You never know though! Thanks again
Amazing layout simon, the detail is incredible especially considering how big this layout is,but not britains biggest apparently 🤷♂️ when is it going on tour again ,
Thanks it’s going back on tour in 2026 😊 thanks for your support 👍
@ ,ok simon thanks for that,I will look for reminders nearer the time 👍keep up the good work
Great video Simon. Those RC trucks are amazing. I take my hat off to you, don’t think I’d have the patience to lay all that track. It is an amazing layout, and I’m sure the new section will be equally as good if not better than the existing layout. Love it. 👍
Cheers Geoff thanks for the comments. Yea laying track isn’t the best job in the world! 👍
Amazing - the R/C trucks are really convincing. This layout is definitely my favourite 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks Paul all the best 👍
Could you make a video of weathering the HAAs using both airbrush and brushes? I have a dozen or so to weather and not sure where to start, As you have hundreds you will be well practiced! I am following your extension with great interest. Well done.
That’s a good idea for another video. Sure I’ll do that. Thanks for the idea. Simon
The amount of work you put into this layout is phenomenal, the details and the future plans are top notch. Look forward to seeing it live one day.
Thanks it’s appreciated I’m sure you will. All the best. Simon
Thanks for your videos on your, and your friends, incredible and superb modelling. Hundreds of wagons - and there’s me with my handful of RCH 5 and 7 plank coal wagons lol! The RC trucks look amazing, great. Looking forward to seeing the cooling towers in place. Thanks again.
Derek size isn’t everything there’s some stunning layouts out there on 6x4 boards! Not many idiots like me take things to the extreme. Thanks for your kind comments 👍
What you say is true, wishing you every success with the layout.
As always a highlight of my week👍😊👍 I've got various brands of leaves, I make my own, from real old leaves, paper etc, using punches. I also use various herbs and condiments (e.g. to represent sand from sand boxes etc) too. Dave Lowery is a brilliant modeller and a thoroughly nice bloke, when I've seen him at shows or open days, good for a few laughs too, I'd like to see more of his layout if you and he can spare the time Simon🤞🤞👍👍😊😊 Giles is a clever man, ingenious miniaturisation of RC too, another nice guy 👍😊 More strength to your elbow, this hobby has seen me through tough times, it's a multifaceted, multi skilled broad church of a hobby. Railway modelling and Railway Modeller, pretty much taught me to read and write (undiagnosed Dyslexia) too. Tony Wright mentioned recently that budding young surgeons had no hand crafting skills nor hand/eye coordination, they're having to be taught at medical school nowadays!! Hobbies are important! Especially if we don't want tptb to get their own, evil ways. ✌️🙏🤞😊💜💜
Once again I can always count on you for supporting comments! Yes Dave & Giles are both geniuses in their own right! I remember Railway Modeller from being a child, I think Steve Flint was then a photographer. Used to love going to get it every month. I know what you mean about the hobby getting you through tough times. I kind of buried myself in the basement for two years during Covid! All the best 👍
Sorry Simon, Woodend Road bridge went about 9 months ago. Great shame as it was one of my favourite spots as both a kid and now...
Crikey I didn’t know that I haven’t been down there for a couple years. How sad. Thanks for letting me know 👍
