Solo wildcamping at the Lake District's unknown reservoir!
Join me in this one as I head out for a solo wildcamp at what I believe to be the Lake District's unknown reservoir, Hayeswater. Most of the snow has gone, and the skies are moody, with fog lingering. I park up at the village of Hartsop, where the carpark is free. And walk up the valley, the path is well visible, and a little steep in places. It's not long before I'm at my destination. Once there I discuss emails between Henry Shires from Tarptent and myself following my Scarp 1 filling up with snow on Great Mell fell two weeks previously. Cat from Wildcat adventures had the same issue on the same night, here's a link to her video for you to check out ua-cam.com/video/lJRNSahZVKs/v-deo.htmlsi=PHTfs1TU2XcHC3WH Henry is adamant that due to the material the Scarp is made from it cannot go to the ground as it would rub, whereas I believe it needs to go to the ground, and a simple hem of something more robust would sort the rubbing issue, what do you think? Let me know in the comments! I hope you all enjoy, atb Paul 🙏🏕🏕🏕😁 #camping #tent #mountains #lake #cold

SUB ZERO winter summit camp, in a lightweight SUMMER trekking tent!

Join me as I head out on a solo winter summit wildcamp in the Lake District. Having finished my 360 digger training, and passed my exams I got an early finish, I'd packed my rucksack the night before just in case of this opportunity, I drove straight out to Bassenthwaite, parked up, and started the steep ascent through Dodd Wood, and eventually to Dodd summit. I'd packed the OEX Phoxx ultraligh...
Solo winter summit camp with heavy SNOW! How do I keep warm?

Join me as I head out on a solo winter summit wildcamp in the Lake District. My original plan to join Dan in Wales was cancelled last minute, so I had to quickly come up with a second plan. I decided to re visit Great Mell Fell, but ascend from the opposite side to my previous camp. Heavy snow and 35 mph winds were forecast, so I packed appropriately and headed out. Starting the ascent it was -...
No more cold hands with GOKOZY heated gloves!

Over the past couple of years I've been getting very cold hands at camp during winter, recently this has been diagnosed as reynaud's syndrome. As you will see in the video blood circulates away from the fingers, and they turn white, it's very painful, and can take a long time to warm up, and is increasingly painful as this happens. I'd been looking for a solution to this, and had decided to get...

    I can say that the Rode Wireless Go II are pretty good so far I've used them a handful of times now and very impressed. I agree a 4 season tent should handle snow gracefully.

    • @ACumbrianladoutdoors
      @ACumbrianladoutdoors День тому

      The Rode is a brilliant bit of kit for sure, I have one, but find it a bit of a faff plugging in and out, switching on and off whilst vlogging, also when plugged in the door is open and not waterproof, which is problematic when wet. The dji mic 2 is Bluetooth, which should be a lot easier 😁 hopefully Henry listens to my ideas, it can only be an improvement 😁 atb Paul 🙏🏕🏕🏕😁

    One question if I may, what other 1.3kg storm worthy tent would you have taken instead?

    • @ACumbrianladoutdoors
      @ACumbrianladoutdoors 5 днів тому

      A very valid question my friend, there's no doubting that the Ultra is light, and a fantastic tent, I've been a massive advocate of it for many years now. Storm worthy? Absolutely, as long as there's no snow about, my point being that in mine and Cat's scenarios there was no option to build a snow wall prior to going to sleep, therefore snow got inside the tent. A question for you, if I may, if they made the Ultra go to the floor, and hemmed it with a material that wouldn't wear on the ground, how much extra weight would be added, I estimate on the conservative side that it would still be sub 1.5 kg, and then a true 4 season tent that won't let snow in, and sinching the sides up for ventilation when required. Thanks for watching and commenting, it's really appreciated, atb Paul 🙏🏕🏕🏕😁

      @ACumbrianladoutdoors Good question. If I were to often camp in windy snow driven conditions, my research would've guided me in a different direction, given every scarp 1 youtube review mentions the fly failing to meet the ground and the fiddly arch pole inserts. I probably would've emailed Terra Nova asking them to produce a 100-110cm wide, 1.5kg terra nove branded version of the Helm 1. Maybe a 20d fly with a 40d sil nylon strip where it meets the ground & a 40d floor similar to fjallraven's abisko line. Hey, I am a bit envious of you and your mate's ability to sleep through a long winter evening in the midst of all of the wind driven snow. Well played.

    • @ACumbrianladoutdoors
      @ACumbrianladoutdoors 4 дні тому

      @dgonz1413 I love the scarp, and it seems such a simple fix to make an already great tent even better. To be fair I'm not out in the snow that often, but I like to be prepared if I am. Yeah no issues sleeping through, ear plugs do help 🤣 atb Paul 🙏🏕🏕🏕😁

    Love your videos. I must admit I wouldn’t want the scarp coming down to the ground or at least not in the sil nylon as I think it would lead to condensation, I see the tent as an all rounder rather than a specific tent for winter. A snow skirt that can be added as needed sounds like the best idea. I think it’s hard for the American brands, as they will sell far more of their tents in the American market where when they have snow it’s there and stays there and not our kind of weather when it can be come and gone in a few hours😂. They have to think commercially what works. All opinions valid and respect yours too! Cheers

    • @ACumbrianladoutdoors
      @ACumbrianladoutdoors 6 днів тому

      Cheers buddy, that's awesome to hear 😁 if the sides were "sinchable" then when there's no snow the tent would be just as ut is now, we would just lift the sides up, then drip them for snow. Hopefully they do make an attachable snow belt, it's a good compromise, and yeah they do have different weather to us for sure, I understand that, the UK especially the Lakes can only be described as very changeable 🤣 thanks for watching and commenting, it's really appreciated, atb Paul 🙏🏕🏕🏕😁

    4 season tents are to the ground simple. Problem is Henry doesn’t listen. He will never fix and put the tents to ground as it will incur abrasion and tents will end back with him with repairs and he doesn’t want that extra cost et . Not forgetting the issue with abrasion on the top arch poles I believe giving out elastic bands to solve the issue. I’ve owned black label soulo and currently have kuiu storm star 2. I wouldn’t go anywhere near the scarp far better tents for more money and also less money

    • @ACumbrianladoutdoors
      @ACumbrianladoutdoors 6 днів тому

      I agree mate, definitely to the ground, all he has to do is put a robust hem on the bottom and the rubbing problem is solved. I'm currently contemplating getting a kuiu stormstar 2 as I need something that can be relied on in snowy conditions. Hopefully Henry will see the light and make a true 4 season Scarp. When camping in snow the idea/solution is to build up a snow wall along the windward edge to prevent snow intrusion. There is an inherent risk of fabric damage, and most especially for laminate fabrics like Dyneema and UltraTNT, for fabric edges that go to ground as the edges then get rubbed/abraded against potentially sharp ground in the wind.

      Hi Henry, great to see that you found my video 👍 when I first reached the summit there was only a light dusting of snow, not enough to build a snow wall, as usual i set my trusty Scarp up with the wind going over the length of the tent. During the night the wind changed direction, and the snow came, obviously whilst asleep I could do nothing to combat this. I appreciate that material going to the ground may get damaged, or worn, especially laminate fabrics, maybe there is a compromise to be had here in the form of a separate piece of material, let's call it a snow belt, that can be attached separately in such scenarios as mine, thus stopping spindrift, and the need to build a snow wall (if there's snow when you pitch) also should this snow belt become worn it is easily replaced. Either that or line the material against the ground with something more robust. I absolutely love both of my Scarps, fantastic tents, however this is the only scenario where i have found it to have a slight weakness, and i am aware of several other camping friends who have experienced the same issue, and feel the same about resolving it. This is most definitely intended to be constructive feedback from an experienced wildcamper, thank you very much for taking the time to watch and comment on my video, atb Paul 🙏🏕🏕🏕😁

      Hi Henry, I also had the same problem as Paul and ended up with a foot of snow in my tent, video here... ua-cam.com/video/lJRNSahZVKs/v-deo.html In prolonged/heavy snow, worse than we experienced, this could potentially lead to a survival situation I've also camped on top of mountains in high wind in the scarp. I was concerned the wind getting under the tent would rip the pegs out. I was camped with friends in aktos. These came closer to the ground and did not have the same issue. Similar to Paul, my suggestion would be a seperate bathtub style ground sheet that could be attached with press studs or similar to the outer. I've actually approached someone to design and make this for me

      @Wild.cat.adventures agreed Cat, there has to be a solution, Hillebergs manage it, the attachable band/belt would be a good compromise, or line the bottom with something more robust. I don't really want to join the Hilleberg club, I much prefer the design and space the scarp offers 👍

    A good source of foil backed foam is a laminated floor underlay. Trouble is, it’s a great big roll! One would last years, or divvy it up with your mates. Thanks for the video, lots of good tips

      @ Hey Paul, based purely on your vid, I just a scored a great deal on the Lethevian at GO with members price plus their January deal. So thanks again, I’ll do a try out once it arrives. Was out last week in -4 with a 2 season bag and a quilt and it was barely warm enough and cumbersome too. There’s a short film of the trip on my channel. KR Ian
