Transforming segmented wood into a bowl
Hey folks, here we have a segmented bowl being turned on the lathe. The wood used is Maple and Black Walnut with a finish of deft gloss. In an effort to not bore anyone with the long version I made a quick version for drama. I have and will have many more long versions with step by step how I did them. Enjoy and please like, subscribe. thank you.

Sometimes logs are just not worth breaking your back over, so for the time being I use a chain hoist attached to the skid steer bucket. @@andregignac4259 if you use a “V” gauge..can be anything you put together to make the shape, with a straight edge up the middle of the V mark your work all the way around maybe 6 times drawing an interesting line. Thanks for sharing your excellent ideas. I have a hydraulic mill, and the dog clamps would eventually crush the plywood edges. I'll use 2x material for the base, but will follow your design ideas. I also would like to be able to wedge in random widths... maybe some simple blocking would accomplish this. Actually, I find short logs difficult to stabilize on my mill. I think I'll put 4 of your modules on one base... maybe 8 ft long.

    Really cool jig. For your shim: if you cut dados the widths of the shim into the bottom board and increase the thickness of the shim by the depth of the dado, you can have a perfectly consistent thicknesses every time without having to fiddle with positioning.

    Everything that is was an idea first. Nice. One thing I might suggest is to mount a 3/4" thick face plate (2" x 3" or so) to the end of the spacer stick. When you are happy with its location, drill a 1/4" hole through the face plate and base and glue a dowel to the face plate. This will locate it in the same position every time. A second or third hole can be added for different thicknesses of shingle.

    • @make-somedust
      @make-somedust 5 місяців тому

      I started down that path and opted to just draw a line on the edge of the board to position the spacer in the same location each pass. I was shooting for “as simple as possible” great thoughts, thanks. Chuck

    If you drew circles for each of the six points on the edges of the circle you would have drawn the 'circle of life'. Not only did I draw these along with partial circles (arcs instead of whole circles) for about a year when I was in my teens, it is my channel icon. I did see a crop circle of arcs once long ago (yeah, only a picture - never seen one in person).

    I've been planning on doing just this for some siding I need, good to see it works. And, I too find the fraying/feathering happens with sharp and dull blades alike, unpredictably from log to log. I think it's more a factor of how the log grows and the constitution of the wood fibres that result from individual growing conditions. I checked out your other videos and you've got yourself a new subscriber. Maybe you might find something of interest on my channel, or not. I used VG redwood siding when I built my house in 1983. Woodpeckers have caused me to try to find some more of that very rare and expensive siding. At the price I’d have to pay, driving my truck to coastal CA from Oregon to a mill, and buy it, I’d almost be even to buy a mill, buy a redwood log, and using your shim technique, make the beveled siding myself….

      I sticker and let them dry and as your installing hit it with a belt sander. I just hit it once with a medium but you can make them smooth as you want. My siding is 3/4 x 6 no bevel. I could run it through my planer but I don't care for the look. Sharp blade is the best way to start. You will use a lot less paint too.
