    • @sparkmanhomestead

      I can’t remember if I filmed one 😬 That’s a good idea for next canning season. I just cook my tomatoes down (usually in my roaster) and then can them following the ball canning book directions. I don’t add seasoning not even salt. Just plain tomatoes so I can use them for anything.

    Do you have to use that much sugar???

    • @sparkmanhomestead
      @sparkmanhomestead 3 дні тому

      You don’t have to. It doesn’t change the safety of the recipe. But it will be very tart if you don’t, because of the lemon juice. Honestly next time I make it I am going to half that amount. This was very VERY sweet. We have been diluting it with ALOT of water.

    I've started zesting my lemons and oranges, when I need lemon or orange juice, but no zest. I put the zest in ice cube trays, that have a cover. I add lemon juice or water, to fill up the ice cube trays with appx 1-2 teaspoons of lemon zest in each cube space, then fill the ice trays up with whatever liquid I have. Once frozen, I put the cubes into a ziplock bag, or freezer container, to grab when a recipe calls for lemon juice and zest. I try to zest and squeeze the fruit, as close to the day of purchase as possible, so I know the citrus won't go bad; and to have it ready, for convenience later. I suggest measuring how much liquid each cube space holds, before adding the zest and juice. That way, when a recipe calls for zest and a measurement of juice,I know how many cubes I will need to pull from the freezer. It kills me to see cooks juice citrus, but they don't zest the citrus to use, or save for later. I think they miss out on collecting extra citrus flavor! Most recipes that call for citrus juice, won't be harmed by adding the zest of that fruit, or save for later. Hope that all makes sense! I look forward to your videos every week! Thank you for teaching this ole dog new tricks!

      I highly recommend Bag Balm, to help heal skin issues. It is, or used to be, used on the udders of "nursing cows" to help them heal, when they got raw. My youngest son, now 30, had an allergic reaction to an antibiotic, that made his diaper area raw and bleeding. I used bag balm on it, and the next day, the area was no longer angry or bleeding! My daughter's youngest child, who is 16 months old, has developed bad skin issues, that leave red rashes in many areas on her little body. I've tried to convince her to TRY bag balm, but since it was developed to heal cows udders, she thinks it's unsafe. I used it exclusively, on all 4 of my children, to heal any diaper rash they got, and provide a barrier on the skin, to not allow urine or stool to have contact with the sensitive areas; but she's still not sold on the idea!! I highly recommend the off label use of bag balm, which is a green square tin, and can be found in the pharmacy area or in farm stores, like Tractor supply, etc. I swear by the stuff! I believe it would help dry, cracked skin, to heal quickly!

    Hey Krista, I love your content 🖤 I just want to give you a heads up that you have it backwards regarding shaking vs leveling off your flour. Shaking causes it to settle into the bottom of the measuring cup, which is what compacts the flour. I typically just weigh mine anyway. I feel like it's a little less hassle than getting out the cups, but you did remind me that I have a beautiful set of cat cups that I really should put to good use. I can't wait to see what else you come up with during the challenge. I get a lot of inspiration from your content.

    Just found you b/c of the pantry challenge. I’m sure you’ll LOVE using fresh milled wheat, but be prepared to do things a bit differently. I switched to FMW about a year ago and can’t imagine ever going back, but had to relearn some baking techniques. Grains in Small Places is my favorite YT channel and website for recipes and techniques. I was just telling a friend today… when you switch to fresh milled, you need to change your expectations. The texture and flavor is going to be different than with store bought flour; outstanding but different. And your tummy soothers taste like licorice because of the fennel seed. I grow fennel and save the seeds to chew/swallow for heartburn; almost always provides instant relief.

    • @sparkmanhomestead

      I’ve heard great things about grains in small places website. I’ll have to check out the UA-cam channel. I am really excited to start this journey. Also I had no idea about the fennel seeds. I will see if maybe I can grow some this year. I love the taste of licorice ( that’s probably why I love the tummy soothers lol)

This is my third year doing the pantry challenge and I LOVE the sense of community it brings us here on YT! 1st time viewer... Not sure if you know... the best way to measure flour is by weight. We all have a scale, right? 4¼ ounces or 120 grams. That is for AP flour, bread flour incl. Artesian, buckwheat and high-gluten flour. Self-rising flour, pastry flour blend, white whole wheat, golden wheat flour, wholegrain flour blend, and whole wheat flour 100% Premium and '00' pizza flour (4 oz./116 gm) are slightly lower at 4 ounces or 113 grams. Whole-wheat pastry/Graham flour is 3⅜ or 96 grams.

      I no longer use store bought baking powder because it has aluminum in it. I was always getting Calumet aluminum free but it's not in our stores anymore. Bob's Red Mill has aluminum free baking powder. I also don't use cornstarch... it's just not good for you. I just bought arrowroot powder to use instead.

      Do you mean artisan? Artesians are naturally pressurized wells or aquifers.
