      The only options here in Canada are cards that earn Marriott Bonvoy points or can be converted to Marriott Bonvoy and then you convert the Bonvoy points to Skyward Miles. Those cards are: American Express Cobalt Card (C$1 = 1.2 to 6 Marriott Points = 0.4 to 2.5 Miles) American Express Gold Rewards Card (C$1 = 1.2 to 2.4 Marriott Bonvoy Points = 0.4 to 0.8 Miles) American Express Green Card (C$1 = 1.2 Marriott Bonvoy Points = 0.4 Miles) Marriott Bonvoy™ American Express®* Card (C$1 = 0.67 to 2.08 Miles) The Platinum Card from American Express (C$1 = 1.2 to 3.6 Marriott Bonvoy Points = 0.4 to 1.5 Miles) You can learn more here: www.rewardscanada.ca/airlinecc.html

    I didn't know you cover McDonald reward too. I've been doing calculations myself. And you did a great job considering savings in sales taxes! In Ontario I sometimes use rewards to make total under $4 to get provincial tax exempted.

      Yes, we don't cover them too often. I think the last time was when the new program launched about a year and half ago (we had blog posts and a video on it). And thank you for the information about under $4 to not pay any tax! I was unaware of that rule in Ontario. This is good to know.

    I found out something interesting, with the RBC Infinite Avion, I purchased tickets for Prem Econ, I was attempting to use my business class upgrades, and when the app failed, I called the priority line, and they tried also but failed. When they researched it, they came back and said you can no longer use e upgrades when you purchase your tickets with points from other rewards cards like the Avion. I was wondering if anyone has run into this - as if this is fully true and not an error by the agent I spoke to, i dont think its fair, as my Avion tickets are paid as cash to AirCanada, how is that different than me buying the tickets and seeking an upgrade - seems targeted to benefit the Aeroplan cards and disadvantage the non Aeroplan cards if this turns out to be true.

    • @RewardsCanada
      @RewardsCanada 19 днів тому

      That's really interesting and confusing considering it was for Premium Economy. This can be big news, especially or Avion and Aventura cardholders if this is the case. I'll reach out to Air Canada and RBC next week to investigate further.

    • @drone_video9849
      @drone_video9849 19 днів тому

      @@RewardsCanada I reached out to RBC/Avion 2 weeks ago, on two occasions, they have not responded to me. The Air Canada agent said this was a recent change in the terms and conditions, RBC/Visa ignored my inquiry so far, I hope you find an answer. My flight is 8 days away, and I have given up on trying to use eupgrades for it at this point as I dont expect a miracle to happen. I look forward to seeing what you can find out - if this is true there is no point for me to keep the RBC card, and I will just use my TD card. Thanks.

    • @drone_video9849
      @drone_video9849 19 днів тому

      @@RewardsCanada I look forward to seeing what they came back with for you, I was ignored when I reached out to RBC asking them if this was "expected" and if they were aware. Air Canada said this was a "recent change" to the T&C's.

    • @RewardsCanada
      @RewardsCanada 17 днів тому

      @@drone_video9849 I've reached out and hopefully will hear back soon. That being said the T&C's do state: "Unless otherwise specified, eUpgrades may not be used in conjunction with promotional pass travel or travel industry discount fares (including AIRMILES bookings) unless otherwise indicated. eUpgrades are not eligible on Group Bookings." So if RBC has negotiated/contract rates with Air Canada it is entirely possible they will not be eligible. But let's wait to see what they say.

    • @drone_video9849
      @drone_video9849 16 днів тому

      @@RewardsCanada I don't think I dispute they are in the T&C's today. My point is I don't think they ever were before; I have used e upgrades to upgrade flights for RBC Avion ticket purchase/redemption for years prior to this. This is the first time they have not allowed me to use them. I believe this change only happened recently. I honestly dont even know when exactly as I have not used an RBC booking for about a year.

    Great content as always! I've been looking into adding some cash back cards to my portfolio and your lists help quite a bit, thanks! That being said, when I'm doing the math I always come back to the MBNA World Elite as I think it might be THE cash back card. 4.5% cash back (with the birthday bonus) on groceries, eats and drinks, utilities and digital media for $120 annual fee is big. If a bank today released a "true" cash back card with such returns, it would probably shake the credit card scene, yet this card isn't being talked much about (other than the Alaska transfer stuff). The only missing piece with this card is gas, so maybe that's the reason. Also the MBNA card is a truer cash back card in the sense that it gives the option to deposit the cash back to your bank account (unlike some other cards that give a statement credit - requiring more spending to benefit from the cash back). Maybe an episode or a piece that compares the "points" cards in terms of the cash back opportunities would be great for the community (I'm sure there are other gems that haven't been talked much about in the community). Keep up the good work!

    • @RewardsCanada
      @RewardsCanada 19 днів тому

      Yes, in general the MBNA card is highly underrated and I'm surprised it doesn't do better or get more coverage. Like you said it is an amazing cash back card and the cash redemption options like the deposit and high redemption value on eGift Cards make it a great card. And I think that a look at the cash back from points would make for a really good article and/or video. Thank you!

    Are there any no annual fee credit cards that have 2x multipliers on travel? Ideally I don't want to pay for additional annual fees for a card...

    • @RewardsCanada
      @RewardsCanada 22 дні тому

      The highest earners for travel for no fee cards are: Rogers World Elite Mastercard 1.5% cash back (2% if you are a Rogers/Shaw/Fido customer) Tangerine Mastercards 2% (for hotels only, if you choose hotels as one of the 2% categories) American Express Green Card 1 point per dollar but when transferred and redeemed via Aeroplan, BA Executive Club or AF KLM Flying Blue you can get 1.5, 2 or even more cents per point in value TD Rewards Visa is 4 points per dollar on purchases made via Expedia for TD - that's a 1.6 to 2% return.

    Does this mean hotel stays are also being downgraded? I have Bonvoy and Aspire so my loyalty hotels are already covered but for all the other hotels the Cobalt was a go to. Especially since we lost the best HSBC card with insurance for elders.

    • @RewardsCanada
      @RewardsCanada 26 днів тому

      Yes hotels will also be 1 point/$. It will be for any merchant that falls under a travel category - so flights, hotels, car rentals etc.

  • @alannichols7025
    @alannichols7025 26 днів тому

    This is a serious change and downgrade. Not for the travel component exactly but because this is a test to see how people will react to the first downgrade. NEXT WILL BE GROCERIES and that's the end of the card period.

    • @RewardsCanada
      @RewardsCanada 26 днів тому

      Can they drop the rate on groceries etc? Sure they can but I don't think they will just for the reason you mentioned, it will end the card period. In my discussions with Amex this past week it is pretty clear they want to differentiate their true travel cards (Gold and Platinum) from the Cobalt and this was the primary driver for that. In the end my guess is they are banking on Cobalt cardmembers that do purchase a lot of travel to add either a Gold or Platinum card to their wallet in addition to their Cobalt Card.

      Thank you! And 100% agree, still an amazing card, just need to shift spend for travel, or if you don't buy that much travel the change from 2 points to 1 points won't make a huge difference.

    @RewardsCanada 27 днів тому

    What do you think of the upcoming change to the Cobalt Card?

    • @KrlosF
      @KrlosF 27 днів тому

      Honestly, it's not the big deal. Plus, there are plenty of other credit cards that offer boosted earning points on travel. What Amex should really do is ENHANCE the Gold card... It's so embarrassing that the Canadian Gold card has so low earning rates and practically non existant statement credits (excluding the travel credit) and other perks in comparison to the USA Amex Gold card.

    • @RewardsCanada
      @RewardsCanada 26 днів тому

      I agree not a huge deal in the big picture. As to the Gold Card, one can't really compare it to the U.S. one like we used to because of the Cobalt Card. The U.S. doesn't have an equivalent card to the Cobalt. Instead they focused on the Gold and Platinum in their market while Canada went with the Cobalt. In hindsight, perhaps Canada should have done the same and made the Gold better rather than introducing the Cobalt but I believe at the time Amex Canada wanted to keep Gold as only a charge product and wanted a new credit product to increase market share so we had the birth of the Cobalt Card.

    Hi there Great Video I have the TD Visa infinite Aeroplan and I am thinking to Switch one of my CIBC to CIBC Visa Aeroplan to earn up to 50K points to get a 1 - 2 Punch as you said will Aeroplan allow that to collect points Faster ??? Any advice? Thank you I have about 72 K points at the moment.

    • @RewardsCanada
      @RewardsCanada Місяць тому

      Based on Aeroplan's terms and conditions you are not supposed to hold two Aeroplan cards in the same tier. So if you have the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card you are technically not supposed to have the CIBC Aeroplan Infinite Card - some people do, but you risk having points deducted, account frozen or even terminated. To be safe you want to make sure you switch to the higher end CIBC Aeroplan Visa Infinite Privilege or the entry level CIBC Aeroplan card as those cards are considered different tiers. Other than that by having both it would definitely increase your Aeroplan earn. Ideally if you want big boost of points you would go for the CIBC Aeroplan Visa Infinite Privilege card with its 80,000 points bonus.

But it's impossible to know the details of the rule I didn't respect, Uber doesn't want to answer me. I only used Uber ± 1 time a month. I just finally used for the first time in 4 years the companion fair from my card and booked a leg of my upcoming trip with them, I’m glad I did it last month. Do you think this has anything to do with now being able to us WestJet dollars for booking sunwing vacations? Maybe they realize lots of people have built up WJD to use so expect a loss with sunwing packages with people using WestJet dollars?

    Also have to differentiate between the cards and Aeroplan partners that give EDQ to reach 25K on top of Aeroplan points which the Cobalt & Gold card do not provide when transferring points.

    • @RewardsCanada
      @RewardsCanada Місяць тому

      Absolutely, there are always a lot of different factors that can be considered and will vary by individual. For a lot of people though earning 100K EDQ is a tough go when they don't use enough partners and especially so with 1 to 1.5 points earn rates on the majority of everyday spending with the Aeroplan cards. So it is more beneficial to turbocharge their everyday earning with something like the Cobalt.

    you're a looser if you're a point collector. create your rewards program by properly budgeting and skipping the startbucks. money is saved while spending. you save 25% tax when you don't buy shit.

    • @RewardsCanada
      @RewardsCanada Місяць тому

      We all have to shop for necessities, doesn't have to be Starbucks. Many do budget as best they can and in today's world rewards play a part of that. If a place that you shop at does offer a reward program you should actually take advantage of it otherwise you're missing out on potential rewards or savings. I always use the analogy of when you have two gas stations kitty corner to each other and both are selling at 1.59/litre (as they almost always match each others prices) but only one has a reward program, why would you bother going to the one that doesn't reward you? You aren't saving any cash and you're not earning anything towards a potential future saving. And I'll save time as some people may comment about the Costco gas option, but not everywhere has Costco, not everyone has a membership or Costco isn't close so the savings are eroded by driving there, waiting in line etc. so that's why I don't include it in my gas analogy.

    You could also have mentioned having an aeroplan reserve cobalt combo is the greatest combination due to aeroplan reserve enhances what cobalt is weak in one point category and that is 1.25x all other purchases. Maybe add aeroplan estore to the spice since sometimes they have high earning rates through their website sometimes Actually, now that i think about it, cobalt and platinum business

    • @RewardsCanada
      @RewardsCanada Місяць тому

      Any of the Ultra Premium Aeroplan cards would be a good choice to pair with Cobalt as they are all 1.25 Aeroplan points on base earn. My pick out of them would be the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Privilege as it has really strong insurance coverage plus 6 free lounge visits with its Visa Airport companion on top of the Maple Leaf lounge access and it would cover you for places that don't accept Amex. Cobalt+Platinum Business - great for flexibility and earning but you'd still need an Aeroplan co-brand for the preferred Aeroplan award flight pricing but that's easily solved with the no fee CIBC Aeroplan Visa.

  • @Jsouta
    @Jsouta Місяць тому

    Great video as always! Definitely agree with Amex cards. However as a CIBC Aeroplan Visa Infinite card holder, I should say that recently CIBC has been pushing special offers/promotions that allows CIBC Aeroplan cardholders to earn additional Aeroplan points, which makes these cards a bit more competitive. For example, about a month ago I received an email from CIBC saying that I can register for a promotion and earn 3X points on Air Canada bookings for this summer. Based on my understanding of the terms & conditions, this 3X is based on the multiplier that is already applicable to the category in question: 1Offer consists of receiving 3 times the Aeroplan points, based on the earn rate applicable to your Account’s base earn per $1 spend and/or your multiplier earn on Eligible Travel Purchases at merchants that are classified in the Visa network as: Air Canada Flights (MCC 3009) Air Canada Vacations bookings (MCC 3009, 4722) Car Rentals Agencies (MCC 3351 - 3441, 7512) Hotels, Motels and Resorts (MCC 3501-3838, 7011) It comes with limits though (for example maximum 4,500 Aeroplan points for the Visa Infinite card). For a CIBC Aeroplan Visa Infinite Privilage card holder (which earns 2x on Air Canada), this means potentially earning 6 Aeroplan per dollar (with a cap of 8,000 bonus points from the promotion), making it THE best card for Air Canada bookings. I have received a few offers like this in the past 12 months (there was one for gas, one for online shopping, one for back to school (electronics, home furniture etc.) ) so if they keep pushing these promotions, I'd say CIBC cards can be decent Aeroplan earning cards going forward (probably still not as good as the Cobalt card all things considered).

    • @RewardsCanada
      @RewardsCanada Місяць тому

      Those definitely make for some excellent earning options! The hardest part for me when it comes to judging these or comparing them against 'everyday' options is that these are targeted limited time offers. Nonetheless, it is great that CIBC offers them and I will definitely make note of and mention them when discussing the cards in future features/videos etc.

      No word of an Aeroplan Mastercard. Would be nice for Costco but I don't think we'll see one as Visa along with TD, CIBC, Amex were the ones who helped Air Canada buy Aeroplan back from Aimia and I'm sure they wouldn't be too happy about having an Aeroplan Mastercard.

      @@NeilBurke00052 No, the Chase card actually came afterwards, TD used to issue an Aeroplan Mastercard in the U.S prior to it as well. I would assume since it was Visa Canada and Canadian banks (well, Canadian arm for Amex) that provided funding that their agreements with Aeroplan are only for the Canadian market so Aeroplan & Chase were free to go with Mastercard stateside.
