Demonstration Of Sony SL-HF950ES Mechanism
Filmed with a Panasonic DMC-GF8 Lumix camera.
This is a quick demonstration of the "Linear Skate" loading and internal mechanism of my Sony SL-HF950ES Super Betamax machine, before it was sold. You'll notice when the tape is ejected, or the tray is opened to insert a cassette, that I have to continually turn the machine off. This is because the limit switch was not working, and the tray motor would not stop operating at the end of the travel.
I bought this machine new in 1988. The retail price then was around AU$2,300, but a friend obtained it wholesale for me so it *only* cost around AU$1,800. In today's money it would cost about AU$4,400. It was the most expensive domestic Betamax ever sold in Australia. This was a European model, and the only modification to make it an Australian market model was to put an Australian power plug on the lead.
Sony Beta machines at the time had a feature called Skip-Scan. When the machine was fast forwarding, pushing the fast forward button would drop it into picture search, and when releasing the button, it would drop back into fast forward. It was the same for rewind. I have demonstrated it in the video, but it's a bit difficult to work out without a monitor (at about 4.23). These machines had very slow fast forward and rewind.
The machine was wonderful when it worked, but it was not that reliable. I discovered at the time that almost all Sony service agents were uniformly terrible, and just didn't care.
I once had the video heads replaced, and when the machine was returned, none of my existing tapes would play properly (like the tracking was way out). The repairer reckoned it was OK, and even Sony Australia (located at Woolloongabba at the time) said it was OK. I took a selection of tapes and demonstrated that they wouldn't play properly, and they still said it was OK. I remember being very close to chucking it into an industrial bin when I was walking out. I then discovered a repairer quite near where I worked at the time, and they aligned it for me in one day and it would once again play all my existing tapes. I used that repairer from then on.
Most common problems were tape left hanging out of the cassette when ejected, the VU meter failing, and the stationary erase head not working.
My only Beta machine now is a Sanyo VTC-5000 II, which works very well after installing a belt and tyre kit.
My apologies also for the neighbour's dog barking during the video.

THERE'S NOTHING QUIT LIKE OWNING A ROLLS-ROYCE.
THEIRE'S NOTHING QUIT LIKE OWNING A ROLLS-ROYCE.
3 months to build one of these things? Rolls Royce was really broke apparently, they couldnt afford to automate and hire more people to crank these things out more efficiently.
😂😂😂😂 bollox
1800 TU was 'the' press car. It's in most of the period brochures. It is also displayed in my pre-1975 car encyclopedia that my dad bought when I was a child. Always loved the Camargue. I got a metallic blue 1/18 model from my granny for Christmas 1977.... I still have it ❤
Great memories. It was never my favourite Rolls-Royce model, but I still like them.
@@deltic I always had a thing for both the Camargue, as well as the Fiat 130 Coupe, the car that inspired it. Both of course were designed by Pininfarina.
@@danieleregoli812 The Fiat 130 Coupe was gorgeous.

Skase was an astute business man, unfortunately the explosive interest rate increase of the late 80s/early 90s caught him out as it did many others. The issue is that the media hounded him as evil, but in reality, the media was the evil one. How many companies have gone under since then, and stakeholders have lost money? Hundred of thousands... Buying shares is a risk in itself for every investor His legacy made Port Douglass famous & the Sheraton Hotel Gold Coast, my fav place to stay
When Crewe was not a shithole.
From the rear it looks like a 77 Caprice.
It does. The 1977 Chevrolet was a particularly handsome car and if anything, was better looking than the Carmargue.
@@deltic Yeah, those old US cars look so poised, at least for me. The Italian influence on the design of the Camargue may make it look a little odd. I'm not such a big fan of the Italian car design.
Thinking the same. More refined than this. @@deltic
I have owned Royces for 25 years and I love them. Mainly due to the pursuit of perfection. Each has engineering at the highest level. Would I buy a new one (if I had the cash)? No, I would not. They are now bland and very far from special.
Too AMERICAN now also. The proportions look too goddam Beverly Hills plastic surgeon owner/driver!
Are you kidding me? No wonder these things cost so much! Can you believe this? Metal sculpting? These motorcars are a work of art!
North Americans, watch Rage on ABC Australia.

Its a shame they only lasted a few years before rotting out
I miss white people.
When England was great and Rolls Royce were tasteful cars driven by those who appreciated them. These days they're re-badged German rubbish owned by footballers. Such a shame.
Rage
Imagine lead loading without a mask, they were real men but probably sacrificed their lives for these cars.
Wish Mel Blanc reprised his roles as the classic Looney Tunes characters on Tiny Toon Adventures before his death as he would’ve recorded his lines and read for the parts.
Worked on some of the early ones at Crew factory
Well it ain’t now! The radiator is beginning to disappear, the spirit is now sitting on the painted body, and don’t get me started on those dreadful led lights installed in the head lining, talk about vulgar and tasteless!
Only 4 months..? It took me 9 months to be created...Lol 🕊🇬🇧🇺🇲
This picture is unwatchable - there needs to be some stabilization at least.
I took ownership of a 1983 Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit in silver sand with Ivory interior. Within a year I disassembled the car had it refinished in a five-way metallic with an incredibly durable clear coat as the paint finishes of the '80s rolls royces were defective. So the car had to be painted. The steering rack was a weak spot in the car so I fitted it with a turbo or steering rack with thicker shafts as those tended to wear out within only 30,000 miles. Then I fitted the car with a harvey Bailey engineered suspension removed all the mission controls kept the fuel injection 14-volt ignition for a higher spark gap and as the British mechanic who serviced it said mate this car is fast what did you do to it? I then fitted the door panels with the wood grain trims and the door threshold plates as seen in the centenary, and red Rolls-Royce badges. On the grill boot and the wheels. Fitted it with the 17x7 aluminum alloy wheels that were fitted to the turbo r's. The silver paint was removed and the alloy was polished. I built a truly Spectacular One of a Kind Rolls-Royce just for myself from all the various pieces that went for the SZ series. The upgraded weather stripping on the doors, and an upgraded audio system. I sold my Silver Shadows to new owners for them to care for them. And the Silver Cloud 3 I never finished the restoration I've sold that to someone else to finish. I kept my custom-made Silver Spirit / spur mulliner Park Ward Edition just for myself. With only 51,000 miles on it it's still sleeping and it's carport. Nearly losing all my wealth in 2008 I maintained my ownership of my special Rolls-Royce. And soon by 2024 she'll be on the road again and with silver hair on my head I'll be an old man driving my Rolls-Royce that I remodeled when I was a younger man. It's always best to take your Rolls-Royce apart and put it back together that way you understand your car you know how it was built because you in your hands actually had something to do with it.
Thank you for the interesting story. Enjoy your Rolls-Royce!
I wish they had made a turbo diesel for these cars.
I think any turbo diesel engine in the early 1970s (or any diesel engine for that matter at the time) would have been far too crude for use in a car like this. Today's turbo diesels would have been a better fit.
All that dipping and painting did nothing to stop the rust.

I wonder if this particular Camargue is still on the road?
I've owned several rolls royce cars over the years from 60's phantoms, clouds, mulliner park ward and nothing beyond the 80''s, I'm truly moved by this rolls royce standard why own anything less
An absolute joy to watch. Thank you so much for taking the trouble to share it.
It was styled after a Fiat coupe' that Paolo Martin admired. I've seen the Fiat, and it's a plausible story. The rear of the Camargue looks unfinished, like a base model 1970 Ford Maverick.
It wasn’t only a illness, they didn’t put up his bed rails in the hospital.
I know it’s no real consolation but for the families of those 40 sailors it was instant for them there was absolutely no chance of suffering
So true. It would have been instantaneous.
The film must be recorded in the late seventies (not eighties), since it covers Silver Shadow and Corniche with CHROME BUMPERS!
Sorry, I probably should have made it more clear. The film was recorded off a VHS tape in the late 1980s. The film itself is from the early 1970s.
Wonderful these where real RRs.... Today a RR is just a BMW with Rolls Royce badge... Shameful iam suprised the bolshy Germans still allowed these cars to be manufactured in the UK.... 😂
Sad day for Iowa and her crew. May their souls rest in piece.
Aside from the tragedy - it's interesting to note how back in 1989 they allowed the news to film the return and civilian family members were allowed on the ship when it returned to port (1:05). Nowadays they would have probably brought the ship in at night and no cameras or family members would have been allowed any where near it. When did we get so paranoid?

Utterley delightful. I am fortunate to own a very small collection of Rolls-Royces (and Bentley) dating from 1922 to 1997, and whilst I knew it took 4 months to build a Corniche, seeing how much hand detailing was involved is enlightening. Thank you.
Actually looks very classy compared to BMWs offerings today
Still going strong in 2023
I don't know nothing about gun powder, but I keep hearing how the powder on the Iowa was old, and outdated but what caused the explosion? Can a bag of powder explode by just dropping the bag to the floor?. What was the source of ignition?
gosh what a lovely country we once had
Hehe.
