Glen Canyon Dam Concrete Batch Plant

With the social distancing that we're doing, I thought I would take advantage of the down time and make a few videos for Mike's Dam Photo Journal. The concrete batch plant at the Glen Canyon Dam was something I always wanted to go inside of, but never had an opportunity. Here's a few narrated images of it for your visual enjoyment.

My father built the aqueduct for the Glen Canyon Dam. I had first grade there. I nearly drowned in that pool. Someone pulled me in by my feet, while dangling my legs. A week later I was getting lessons. I jumped off the board, onto my teachers collar bone. I broke his shoulder. I didn't get to swim for years. The workers kids were a rough bunch.

Mike, I worked for the city in the early 80s. One day, I was working on the Caterpillar D7 tractor used at the old trash dump. A former USBR worker came over and said he operated a D7 during the construction of the dam. (one of two D7s that worked on the dam) I informed him that this was one of them. He told a story about one of the D7s getting stuck in quicksand around the bend of the river. They tried getting it out with the other cat but were afraid of getting it stuck and losing both vehicles to the river. He said they ran a cable from the skyway crane and tried to get it out. It could not pull it out. The D7 stayed in the river during the spring flood. After it dried out, they were able to dig it out and pulled it out with the other cat. I do not know what happened to that D7 after the dump closed.

Mike, my parents moved to Page in 1970. I was 10 years old. 925 Castle Rock was are first home (a Bechtel trailer brought in for the construction workers). Spent a lot of time in your back yard. I rode my Honda 50 a lot in that area and the old corrals. Looking at the old photos, things had changed so much by 1970! Thanks for preserving Page's history.

Hey Mike, it was you and I that climbed down into that caved in shaft and found that rolled up string hanging on a nail. Never have heard anything about how that shaft came about. Must’ve gone pretty far in because there was quite a bit of string wrapped on that stick.

My family moved to Page in 1964. My father ran the Cedar Glass and Partners Upholstery businesses on Vista Ave. I was amazed at how many faces I remembered and could put names to. I loved growing up in Page. Moved away in 1989. Still miss it there. Thanks for the great memories.

I LOVED this video! I was there as a child, it was so special to see these pictures and hear your commentary. I started school there, first thru third grade, and lived in the trailer court near you, on "J" st. When you said that open area was your backyard, I totally related, I explored back there also! Wow. So cool to see all this. I also went to the corals, and the drive-in theater where we saw "The Greatest Story Ever Told". My mom was an extra (I read that lots of the towns people were extra's) I have my mom's paycheck stub. My dad worked on the dam until it finished and we moved away in the summer of 64. Thank you for making this!

I have watched your other videos and have meant to contact you to let you know how much I appreciate these videos you have made commemorating your time in Page. I wish I could be there for your presentation! How I would love to hear the comments about the pictures.

Wasn't a Page visitor, that I recall, but in mid-50s I spent a summer in Scottsdale, with visits to family friends around there and up to Mayer. Clumb Camelback before any trail, visited Taliesin West when it was way out there. Thanks for memorializing this area. As a Clamper, I'm involved with monumental erections for people, places and things out West.

This is pretty cool, my grandpa told stories about the development of Page. He was there for the construction of thee dam, before there was pavement and businesses. Only a small pop-up store (maybe it was Page market) for the construction workers.

Hey Mikey! Bob & I watched this video twice and thoroughly enjoyed it! With me being SO much younger (lol), there was a lot of history that I either never knew or only knew because had heard Gene or others reminisce about it. As for that spot where the cinder block type (unfinished) building was, never ever knew what it was supposed to be or why it was abandoned. Thank you for all the time & effort you put into these.

Thank you so much for the tour. My family moved to Page in 1960 when I was 10 years old. I left in 1968. I was just the other day telling my husband about Rose Lake. Wasn’t there a golf course nearby? Shortly after this photo was taken, my dad and another USBR employee were tasked with planting all the trees in the park.

Mike. The old Page Market was in what is now Fred's, etc. After it was Page Market Warners moved their Firestone Store there, then evolved into the present Warner enterprises.

Mike, this photo had to be taken in 1960 sometime. I went to school from 1958-1960 in the Butler Buildings and started 9th grade high school in 1960 in the new school. Really enjoy your posts about the great little Town of Page.

USBR Group Photo at 2:40 - Richard "Dick" Barton (far right, plaid shirt, tinted glasses, third back from front); 4th from Dick's right, but "2nd Row": Blonde woman might be Elsie (Robertson) Swapp; 6th from Dick's right in same row, in plaid shirt: Elmer F. Urban (1920-2001); behind Elmer Urban in dark shirt: MIGHT be Elsie Swapp's husband, Leon Johnson Swapp; on Leon's left: USBR Page Ranger Everett Wichman; back row, far left: Harry H. Gilleland.

You’re right about Leon Swapp and Everett Wichman (gave me my very first ticket when he was a bureau ranger. My dad, Gene Sr, is 5th from the left, front row. To his left was Mr Jordain ( can’t remember first name). At the very left with his face partially hidden is William Leach. 2nd row, second from the right is TJ Vinson and I believe the man in the last row, 4th from the left is Rick Parsons. And I believe the guy in the polka dot shirt in the back row is Gordon Penrod.

The American Legion guys at 2.52 that I can remember names are: First row 2nd from left is Hank the haircut guy, 4th from the left is my dad and next to him is Bob Kirner. Back row, first from the left is Ralph Cecil, 3rd from left is TJ Vinson. I do recognize the rest of them but can’t remember names.

Group Photo at 2:32 - Ladies in white, front row: Judy Fox '62 (2nd from left) & Elsie (Robertson) Swapp, mother of Bob Swapp '72 (4th from left, no glasses). Bob will show photo to his mom to identify group and individuals (Judy couldn't add any info, except she thinks this was taken while she was working for NPS-GLCA). Guessing photo taken circa 1965.

The gentleman in the plaid shirt to Judy’s left looks like “Zug” Bennett (daughters Trudy and Debbie) and to her right I believe might be Roe Barney (son Tim and daughter Mitzie).
