5 reasons why the Aygo is hard to drive
I saw the Resonix site a little while ago. Prior to that I was planning on getting Dynamat for my car. I've known about them for a very long time and they were who I knew the most about. After seeing the Resonix site, I chose to go with the Amazon Basics. It wasn't the best, but is better than Dynamat, as good as almost all the others, and really cheap. It just happened to be on sale when I was buying and I bought a lot, probably too much. In my mind, I bought about $1000 worth, in square feet, of Dynamat material, only better. This has given me enough to not worry about the cost when I'm applying it. I've got a 24 GR86. So far, I've done the rear wheel wells and the roof. I am starting to hear slight improvement. I know that is mostly placebo. I took some sound measurements before I started, I measure again once I am finished. When I upgrade the stereo, I'll pull out all the carpeting and liberally apply it everywhere. In my last car, I only did the doors. I'm looking forward to seeing how much better a whole car treatment can sound.
Thanks for sharing this Kernel. I am yet to rip out the carpet and do the roof, but I did do the rest of the car (pretty much) and made a video on it here that might be helpful - ua-cam.com/video/4uoy9ejc1Wk/v-deo.html
Every 10dB is noticeably half or twice as loud, because we hear and see logarithmically. 3dB is half or twice as loud linearly, or 1/4 of the noticeable volume change.
Thanks for clarifying this, AZREDFERN
This test makes absolutely no sense! :D
I think you don't understand it
These sound dampening mats essentially focus on eliminating reverberations that travel through car panels and by using a cymbal, it is my crude representation of said car panel. It's not perfect, but it does show that these mats do stop vibrations travelling through metal objects. Car Builders has a great intro to sound proofing materials that you might like to catch here - ua-cam.com/video/P4ylKyoY_oU/v-deo.html
Sadly they dont have my car model ita too old
I’m surprised none of these car insulating videos mention the use of spray cork used in marine insulation to do the same job but also make the car a lot more comfortable in harsh weather. Same thing goes to wool insulation. spray cork would have been easier to install, better at sound insulation, makes it thermally insulated and it isn’t toxic or combustible. No toxic smoke or melting issues with sprayed cork.
Hi mate we're did u get the bulb from
Random q, but just picked up a 2016 Aygo and a couple of bulbs in the heating/air con unit need changing (behind the blue curve of the temp control and behind the options on the right of the selector). Is that a straightforward job?
If you remove the centre facia plate, it looks like the heating module comes out as one unit (basing this off of looking on eBay), so if the lights plug in there, it doesn't look too hard of a job. Haven't done it myself, but if you look on eBay at the control panel - tinyurl.com/5f8hhj7r - it looks like it just unclips and I am assuming lights plug into the back.
Wow , I thought I went mad when my Jaguar XJ ECU gave up and then bought an Aygo. I have never looked back as I halved my insurance Per Annum. My Jag cost £340 a year for Tax while my new Aygo is Zero money per year. £110 about what it used to cost me to fill an empty Jag petrol tank to full to get about 300 miles urban driving. Now with the Aygo I will pay about £55 for an empty tank to full and get 500 miles driving. Where can I go wrong anyone?
Love stories like this and it very much mirrors my own. Bravo!
Is it just me who can barely notice the difference all this made? Im thinking about doing my '78 Cavalier but if its not going to make much difference, i might forgo it and avoid any chance of rust forming behind a poorly adhered mat
Hi there. I think it's worth noting a few things. I've only focused on sound pressure here that is measured with a decibel meter. viewers on UA-cam seem to be addicted to decibel meter results even though it's only really part of the overall picture as it's only measuring sound pressure. It doesn't include timbre (that quality of a sound), which this does improve by turning something like an annoying whine into something more enjoyable. Texture is also missed and because you are adding a new material into the mix, it changes how sound travels and interacts with each object, creating a more pleasant place to be. Vibration is also improved, so if you have an older car, it will make a nice difference to the quality of your ride and I will caveat all of the above with this: Buy quality stuff - The sound deadening mats I used are only 50mil, but most these days are 70-80mil. buying quality materials matters, so if I were to do it again, I would likely start there.
A 3 db change is a doubling or 50% reduction in sound level. Also, a friend put new tires on her CRV it made a good reduction in road noise. Cheers
Jamie Hi im just about to get my first Aygo Auto :) but im interested in the Arm rest where did you get that one from please
Hi, Ron! The one I have is this one - tinyurl.com/3w8v3nex - It fits alright but the fitting nuts do tend to run loose over time, so you do have to tighten them periodically. I am considering picking one up from Armster, though. Bit more expensive but designed for the car - tinyurl.com/4sm3nsmm
Great video ! How did you remove the air vents trim ?
Thank you! You'll need to take the whole silver plate off, flip it over and the vents are attached with a couple of screws on the back
@ Okay, and is the silver plate easy to remove?
Yeah, if you use interior removal tools it makes it much easier.
I wonder how does it compare to mitsubishi mirage from the same year
Low profile tires have a higher sound level and are rougher riding.
The taller the tire wall the less noise as there is more rubber to absorb vibration.
Safety: as well as using axle stands, chock the wheel on the opposite corner both front and back of the tyre. Especially when working on a slippery, loose, or sloped surface! A pair of folding wheel chocks is cheap, or if you have scrap wood around you can make your own. A lot of sound deadening is reducing the pitch of the noise - that's what adding mass to a vibrating panel does. Low pitched rumbles are less annoying than whistles and hissing noises. It may not be much quieter to a sound meter but changing the timbre of the sound makes the ride more comfortable.
Thanks for adding to this so thoughtfully, Greg.
Thanks! Really helpful!
Glad it helped!
Have you got a link to this unit I'm just about to buy an Aygo and the only thing about the whole care is the lack of sat navigation/ phone connection thanks 👍🏻

Do you have to programme your steering controls to the radio
Hi, Georgina. No, it's very plug-and-play so as soon as you plug it all in you're good to go
They have spray on soundproofing.
Thanks for sharing this. It is something I definitely want to check out. Do you have any recommendations?
How is it on the motorway especially. I really want a 2021 aygo
It can get blown about a bit on motorways but it definitely holds it's own out there and is happy to cruise on the motorway, even if it doesn't always sound like it.
Hello and if my aygo do not have touch screen can i fitting oryginal toyota aygo touch screen??thank u
Yes, you should be fine. I can't vouch for this myself, but plenty of people on the Aygo forums have done it. One thing to note is that you'll obviously be missing the rear camera view unless you want to add this in yourself.
My lads just bought one of these, first car, and he’s 6ft 6. Fits in lovely.
Oh, wow! Good lad! A very prudent choice. Good on him!
I watched a simulation using cymbal, here's the thing, you don't have to patch all of the surface with the deadening material, the metal area that has flat surface is enough.
Yeah, you are spot on here and it's something I picked up on in my full soundproofing video.
Why are you calling it Brodit?
That's the name of it in Europe/UK. I believe the American version is called ProClip.
@@jamieaygo ohhhhh ok! I didn’t realize they named themselves differently in other countries, no wonder I’m confused
shoud've change scale in dBA, no dBb, difference will be 3-5 dB min
Ah, interesting. Will look into this, thanks!
my one's engine rumbles while it is idle
Depends what kind of rumble it is....These engines are known for being a bit on the noisy side but they are super reliable. Does the rumble make the whole car shake or is it just more of a gentle rumble?
My 108 2014 got writen off while it was innocently parked. Loved it so just got a x trend aygo 2022. One of the last before the aygo x came out
Nice upgrade! What do you think of it compared to the 2014 variant?
Great video. What I would like to mention is that the "CarPlay" app for iPhone is called "CPLink" in some of these Chinese products, so anyone wondering why it isn't working now knows why, as I spent days getting it to work. You should not create a Wifi hotspot or connect it via Bluetooth, but rather let the radio create a wifi hotspot for your iPhone to connect to by starting the "CPLink" app.
Hey nice work! I've turned on notifications so I won't miss any updates if you add more soundproofing in future. It's interesting how car manufacturers have progressively made their cars better soundproofed over time. I'm a Toyota owner too and in the earlier stages of soundproofing it... Not the quietest cars but ripe for DIY improvement. One thing that Toyota have been doing in the factory more recently I've heard is blocking up gaps and hollows and channels where noise might enter the cabin... Might be something to consider for yourself I dunno... Any gaps in parts of the vehicle or materials that actually block sound transmission can let through an unexpected amount of noise for the size of the gap... Like when you open a car window just a tiny crack you notice a huge amount of noise gets in as though you'd opened it a lot more... Even when parked in traffic so it's not from wind or air movement it's just from the properties of sound travel... A general principal to keep in mind... And as everyone in the comments here is giving their two cents worth I might as well make another suggestion too... I've done lots of research on tyres over the years... and I'm not sure how meaningful those eu tyre label decibel ratings are... I'm sure they have some degree of accuracy but a more reliable source I think would be comparative testing that's done for example on some UA-cam channels like Tyre Reviews I think a good one is called. Unfortunately though there's not a lot of good comparative testing out there... So I'm planning on doing some of my own myself... But there are definitely tyres that are quieter than the ones you've got I would wager. And probably quieter than those Yokohama tyres too... Maybe if and when the ones you've got wear out and it's time for new ones... Because fair enough you got them for a bargain and they're decent brands and quality so not the worst either I'm sure and I'm not criticizing that decision at all... There's not enough guidance out there to make spending big money on tyres sensible... I might suggest looking at Goodyear Efficientgrip variants though. I remember they were the quietest in one big test. ...I'm planning on upgrading the wheels on my car like you did too! I hadn't heard that alloy wheels might be quieter but I have often wondered about it actually... So I learnt something! Cheers
Thanks for adding to the conversation in such a meaningful way. Sure to help others!
can you do a pov drive pls?
I would, but I think this video mostly covers it by Sholly - ua-cam.com/video/ppnvY85qMOI/v-deo.html
@@jamieaygo cheers
I moved from a 107 Pug to a Mk2 Aygo , it seems like a Lexus by comparison , a few more cubby holes would help the Mk2 , but overall its great [ for what it is ].
Ah, interesting. You are spot on with having more cubby holes. Would have been nice to have that carry over from the MK1!
@@jamieaygo I really miss the ones under the steering wheel towards the drivers door , I kept a rescue knife and a torch in that wee pocket in the 1 now they have moved to the door pocket along with a rescue mask on the 2 , but having no cds to carry in the 2 as its not got a cd player has meant its not just as big of a miss as it could have been , the only other bug I have is that on the info display there should be an option to show the big clock display insstead of the miles per gallon etc ,, over all I really like the 2 though
My 2021 Aygo is os much quieter than that. Conversation is easy and you don't even have to turn the radio up (Radio 4 talking). My Aircon is also fine - although I rarely need to have the fans up at all. Certainly hear gearbox noise and clunks at times - but I find mine surprisingly quiet.
Nice! Your comments about the facelift Aygo MK2 seem to mirror a fair few comments on here, which is really nice to see. I have thought of skipping the MK2 facelift and going straight to the Aygo X, but there is something in me that just wants to try them all 😂
Bedliner would do well in the wheel wells.
oooh, nice idea. I might give that one a try!
That aint right. Water will seep in and rust will form underneath..
You're right and I do mean to test this as the material has been on for about a year now, so I do plan on peeling it off to see how it's faired.
Why so low. Taking your eyes off the road
I agree, it is low but used to glance. I now have a head unit I hook my phone up to that really elevates this phone holder.
I've just bought a Toyota Aygo X in part exchange for my old Mazda 2. It's a nice car to drive, the engine is louder than I'm used to though. I'm sure that I'll get used to it in time 🤞
Nice one, Ashley. The engine on these cars are known to have a bit of character, but the are fiercely reliable. An easy way to quieten it would be to pick up an engine cover if you don't fancy doing too much DIY. If you do fancy doing a bit of DIY, I have an hour long video on the channel showing you how to soundproof your car, which does work wonders.
the 107 had better internal storage , the Aygo 2 is lacking some of the cubby holes , but all in all its a grand wee car.
that's a good observation and was my guess from the many hours I spend browsing Autotrader 🤣
electric knife is needed to cut foam
Thanks for the tip, Will! I'll look at picking one up!
Or a bread knife isn't bad either. The serrations help make a cleaner cut than a single sharpened blade
I've had a 2017 aygo for nearly 4 years and I literally havent spent a penny on it beyond service, MOT and normal maintenance. New tyres is the only thing I've spent thus far that I can think of. I also drive around 200 miles a week so it gets well driven. Perfectly fine if you have reasonable expectations, yes it's noisy on motorways but for absolutely everything else its perfect. Surprisingly nippy and fun to drive too, especially round country roads which is what i mainly do.
That's a solid mini review of this car. Agree! Mine hasn't cost me anything other than perishable items, too.
Hello! Nice video! It helpt me when i fixt my inner light. But what about lights on the license plate? Please make a video 😬👍
When mine go, I'll be sure to make a video on it!
@@jamieaygo yes sir, but the original lights are so weak. Isn't it better with white led light? Have a nice day!
does the volume control etc on the steering wheel illuminate when the headlights are on ??
they don't, I'm afraid. After using them for a while, you do get used to what buttons you are pressing so muscle memory does help, but would be nice if they did light up.
When I first drove my new Aygo I was stalling and over revving as I could not used to the clutch, I dreaded being at the traffic lights as I was rolling the car back as I could not get the biting point. After 4 weeks of driving like a novice, I got my mechanic to lower the clutch and from then on I had no problems. Great little car and fuel efficient, I just wish it had a big speed as I do like to put my foot down.
Nice! I just decided to live with the high clutch, but think you made the right call in getting it lowered. Yeah, the lack of power can be frustrating at times and you are certainly reminded of it if you dare to overtake other cars 😂 On the plus side, it does encourage you to drive a bit more sensibly.
Never noticed any of these, as long as you understand what the purpose of the car is. -To be nippy in the city, low cost, reliable, easy to find parking spaces, thieves won't bother with them etc etc you will be fine. If you expect it to be a motorway vehicle or regularly carry multiple people around, then this probably isn't the one for you. Having said that, i've had it for a few years and it's been a very good tool in the city. Not the sexiest car, but it does the job.
Thanks for adding to the conversation, Luke. Great observations and I agree. I made these initial observations when I’d just got the car, but if you’ll notice from my latter videos, I do love my little MK2 Aygo to death! It’s absolutely perfect for me and I think its reliability is its hidden superpower!
Confused - What does the kill mat do?
Hey, Roman. I’ve covered it in more depth in my newest video, so I’d encourage you to watch that. In essence, Kilmat (a brand of butyl mat) kills vibrations that travel through car panels. It’s the first layer you need to use when soundproofing your car. The second to put on top of that is closed cell foam and then you can put mass loaded vinyl on top of that where possible. The latter material is heavy and unless you have a decent adhesive, it will be hard to hang. It’s perfect for putting on the floor of the car, though.
Finally a hands on attitude for untrained but interested ppl. And you show what you do for ex the sound deadning in the wheel section. Everbody else talks about it, but nobody showed it. thanks for that, helps me a lot seeing it visually. A little side note: I would emphasize the three layers clearer to your audience, because I had to rewind a few time to get the layers right as a beginner with the project of sound deadning.
Thank you! Yeah, that’s a good idea. It actually took me a few times to get it to sink in, too 😂
Interesting video. I spotted a couple of things whilst you were taking wheels off & jacking up etc, so here is some unsolicited advice. First, don't remove wheel nuts completely until the car is off the ground; this is likely the reason that the last 2 were so difficult to remove. Removing a wheel nut whilst another is tight causes the wheel to not sit quite as flush, meaning there is more tension held in the remaining bolts. Usually, i'd crack the wheel nuts loose before jacking up, before removing them completely. Another thing about jack stands. Those ratcheting stands are really strong, and usually come with a pin system to secure the ratchet in place which adds more stability and another line of defence if something bad were to happen.
Cheers, Jake! Appreciate the advice!
I changed the clutch in my 107 and the biting point was fixed. They're known for being weak in these.
Cheers, Mike. Will keep an eye out!
This wasnt mentioned in the video - is this from an x-nav to 3 button? Or something else? Ive just swapped a 2 to 3 but the 2 is an xnav (has sd card in the glove box). You have to also disconnect the USB splitter, and connect the USB connector directly to the head unit. If you keep the splitter, carplay wont work. Removing the splitter will stop the built in nav working, but then carplay will work
at 1:04 you can see the grey cable, far left, goes into the dash - in an xnav unit it goes upwards into a small black box which has two additional cables which go into the dash. Disconnect both of those from the splitter, and the splitter from the head unit. On the splitter input youll see the nav icon (left) and “USB” (right). Connect the right USB directly into the head unit, and car play works
This isn't an X Nav, but you're spot on with what you say if you are coming from an X Nav. There is a decent diagram on the Toyota aygo forums if anyone is needing it - www.toyotaownersclub.com/forums/topic/189148-aygo-2015-infotainment-upgrade-android-auto-and-apple-carplay/page/4/#comments
At first I thought my new Pioneer speakers were rubbish. The sound was very resonant at first, the bass reproduction was very thin and ugly. After I flattened the doors inside with this stuff I couldn't believe my ears! The bass now sounds so incredibly full and deep! My bass setting was first set to +7 after everything was done, it is at -1 😃
Nice! Love this.
I live in Denmark from where I can buy one ? For my Toyota aygo 2018 ?
Hey! eBay is your best bet. That's where I got mine 👍
Search for "86140-YV020" and it will bring up three button head units. If there are local markets in Denmark that stock car parts or a Danish eBay, might be a good idea to look there.
