5 reasons why the Aygo is hard to drive
Have you had any issue with drooping? I have yet to find a mount that does not gradually start drooping over time and require re-adjusting
Hey Jamie Bit of brain teaser here, I’ve purchased a aygo but it didn’t come with any screen just the basic entry leave radio. Do you think a OEM upgrade unit would also be plug and play?
From reading on the Toyota Aygo forums, it should, yes! Obviously, can't vouch for this myself, but the connectors in the car should be the same. what I'd recommend would be to find a user called "Flash22" on the Aygo Forums - link here - tinyurl.com/bdhj2dk6 - and message him. Dude seems to well up to speed on the head units in these Aygos, so should be able to tell you.
Thanks. Super useful video with all the pertinent facts.
Glad it was helpful!
Hello Jamie, do you need unlock codes to use it?
Not as far as I am aware, no. These are all plug and play and aren't coded, but always worth asking the person you are buying it from to be sure.
@jamieaygo I saw that your device has got the Toyota's logo, while my device has got only Peugeot's and Citroen's logos. Is It the same model?
My three-button unit was actually from a Peugeot 108, so you're good.
Do you have a link for this screen? Thanks!
There isn't one specific link as these are all OEM second hand units and the best place to pick them up is on somewhere like eBay 👍 If you search for the code I shared in the video, that's the unit you want. Crucially, you want a unit with 3 buttons and not 2.
@ okay thanks been searching on Ebay but everything is €400+ that’s too much for me🤣
Yeah, sadly they do command a bit of a premium as they are becoming harder and harder to source. It might be worth considering buying a 3rd party one. There are tons of frames on eBay that you can retro fit in the space of the original head unit if you are willing to do a bit of work, which will essentially allow you to fit any head unit you like, but you'll need to do the work with connectors, etc. I'd try and call local breakers in your area to see if they have OEM 3 button units. Probably cheaper than eBay, too.
You **MUST** use **2** jack stands **EVERY TIME** YOU GO UNDER A VEHICLE!! I know a mechanic who was pinned under a vehicle in his own driveway, he was on his back and the jack failed, and it took over an hour for him to die { coroner's report }. I myself have had 2 jacks fail while in my owe driveway. One of those times I was inspecting the brakes, and the fender cracked me on the back of the head { I had my head under it }.
Aygo's are not really loud cars from standard.
Think we’re all here because we have realised we have bought a load of crap 😂
Nah! It's all part of this little car's charm!
Hi I've just done the same installation as yourself but can not seem to get apple carplay to work any suggestions please ??
Hi, Chris. I can try and help. Does the phone actually connect to the screen and do you get anything to display? These units only work via USB and won't work wirelessly, so I am assuming we can rule that out. One thing that sprang to mind if it is connected via USB and nothing comes on the screen, the USB socket might not be connected properly, so you could check that. Additionally, If you have one of those units that has a sat nav (X-Nav) module, you need to connect the USB in a particular way. The link is here - tinyurl.com/yc87jef7 - Scroll down to Flash22's comment where he details with pictures how to connect the X-Nav to get Apple Car Play working.
Obviously, I am doing a bit of guessing here as to what the issue is. If you get back to me, I'll try and troubleshoot if those things aren't related to your issue.
@jamieaygo I've done all the things you've done all same plugs just when I plug phone into usd and connect to phone nothing happens
I see the mention a box at the back of radio didn't see one but the was usb cable
Was therea box at the back of radio when you done it yourself ??
Activating foglights (1:36) is not done by pushing the stock forward, that's high-beam. Controlling brightness of the lights (2:53) isn't a thing either, that knob is for adjusting headlight height, which you might want to adjust with a full boot and rear passengers.
Thanks for correcting this 👍
Why are you applying sound deadening to the bonnet? Surely parts closer to your ears and attached to the cabin would be a better place to start? Doors, roof, floor? Curious…
The butyl mats are mainly to stop panel vibration, so they are still useful when applied on the bonnet. I'm working on doing the floor and roof in a separate video 👍
2:07 that DC5 😍
And leaking boots
Yyyeah maybe turn the jack 90 degrees so the car won’t actually tip over on you and do NOT work on gravel with such equipment. At least buy a 25mm OSB paned that would fit your jack and jack stand 😬😬I used to do it until my car fell from this stupid scissor jack and damaged the sill 😢
Thanks for the tips, Tony
Appreciate the honesty, most reviewers are too worried about upsetting manufacturers to have the guts to tell the truth! Have been thinking about an Argo for some time, to reduce running costs, but safety is always my number one priority!!! This review has convinced me to stay with my Saab. My passengers lives are more important than saving a few quid!
It seems to me that noise coming from the tires is the biggest factor. I drove a Mercedes for many years and of course it was very quiet. Now I drive a Honda Fit. It is a nice little car, but very noisy at highway speeds, particularly when the pavement is rough. It is very noticeable when the road transitions from a smooth surface to a rougher one. My best bet would be to insulate around the wheel wells somehow, and/or replace the current tires with quieter ones. Also, I think it is not necessary to cover all that metal with the "kilmat" (smaller pieces would do it). The foam material seems a good solution to absorb higher frequencies, and the vinyl doesn't seem to be worth the trouble and cost. Thanks for the detailed video!
I think you're spot on with what you could do to the Honda and thanks for the tips!
Appreciate the comprehensive guide and eloquent delivery, thank you! I've pondered doing this on a sister car... the older 107. As a wacky but half-scientific idea I'd like to compare the baseline with the (rear of the) car filled with cushions/duvets - just to see how much absorption they'd provide. Not a practical idea but interesting perhaps. Regarding matting over the wheel liners... if nothing else they provide a nice home for rodents - as I found out on my Verso - at least they chewed that and not the wiring 😂
I love these types of ideas!!
Theres absolutely no point in adding MLV in plastic door cards if you don't cover it 100% plus MLV is mainly used on floors with as much coverage as possible
Hi Jamie. I have a 2018 toyota Aygo Xcite with a 2 button infotainment system. I have spoken with Vantage toyota and they have told me that I cannot swap it for the android auto one as it wont fit in my car. They are saying it is too big as it is for the new Aygo X. Yours has just fit ok. Can you help?
Hi! I think they may be confusing that you want to take an infotainment unit from the Aygo X (the new SUV-style, larger Aygo) rather than a MK2 Aygo, which is the one you have. What you want to be doing is taking a 3 button unit from a MK2 aygo (not the Aygo X) and just popping it into yours as it's plug and play. The one you want is with this code - 86140-YV020 - If you pop that into eBay, it will return models like this - tinyurl.com/5n8c2syu - Hope that helps!
Thanks dude for making this video, probably one of the most detailed I've seen so far based on your effort and patience on soundproofing your car. Just to ask, how did those mats you placed along the wheel arches and liners? did those hold and stick on after a few months tilll now? Thanks mate.
Thanks for the nice comment. Appreciate it! The mats on the plastic wheel arch liners seem to be holding up well and there is no worry of rust on the plastic parts, which is nice. I actually popped one off the other day and everything is still where it was. The mats that I put on the metal part of the wheel well have been there for about a year-ish and I do plan on getting a heat gun and replacing them/looking to see if there is any panel rust, so stick around as I'll post on the channel when I do👍
@@jamieaygo its more effective to just use undercoating spray at that point for the exposed metal parts of the wheel arches
Thanks for the review. Very helpful advice.
Cheers, mate. Appreciate it!

The Aygo MK2, especially the later face lift one with the 72Hp engine is very snappy. You have to be good at gear changes and learn the revs, but if you keep the engine RPM above 4500, you can race about all you like, the 800Kg kurb weight is very easy the thrash around if you know how
Yeah, you're right about it being a fun old ride if you know how. I'd love to drive the facelift models!
@jamieaygo I have a 2022 (71 Plate) Aygo X-Clusiv in a limited edition 3 stage red, it's an absolute dream to drive. It's very responsive and suspension is very smooth, extra bit of power is absolutely noticeable. Extra tech features and LED lights are amazing looking. I've modified mine with a short shifter kit from eBay and it makes the gearbox slush so much smoother and less washed out.
Nice! I'm assuming you picked this up before the Aygo X was a thing or did you just want to stick with the smaller form factor? By the sounds of it, you got one of the last batches of the MK2 facelift!
@@jamieaygo yeah I got the very last one pretty much. I bought it brand new in January this year, for £11,000 from a Toyota Dealer with 1100 miles on it. Apparently it was a show room car for a year or so. I didn't want an X because I think they are hot crap, I'm not a sucker for the "SUV everything" trend. And I prefer the small form factor. I use my Aygo for dirt and gravel rally driving, so the lighter variant is helpful.
100 percent agree with you on your Aygo X views. I honestly don't know who they made it for. Certainly not previous Aygo owners 😂
I saw the Resonix site a little while ago. Prior to that I was planning on getting Dynamat for my car. I've known about them for a very long time and they were who I knew the most about. After seeing the Resonix site, I chose to go with the Amazon Basics. It wasn't the best, but is better than Dynamat, as good as almost all the others, and really cheap. It just happened to be on sale when I was buying and I bought a lot, probably too much. In my mind, I bought about $1000 worth, in square feet, of Dynamat material, only better. This has given me enough to not worry about the cost when I'm applying it. I've got a 24 GR86. So far, I've done the rear wheel wells and the roof. I am starting to hear slight improvement. I know that is mostly placebo. I took some sound measurements before I started, I measure again once I am finished. When I upgrade the stereo, I'll pull out all the carpeting and liberally apply it everywhere. In my last car, I only did the doors. I'm looking forward to seeing how much better a whole car treatment can sound.
Thanks for sharing this Kernel. I am yet to rip out the carpet and do the roof, but I did do the rest of the car (pretty much) and made a video on it here that might be helpful - ua-cam.com/video/4uoy9ejc1Wk/v-deo.html
Every 10dB is noticeably half or twice as loud, because we hear and see logarithmically. 3dB is half or twice as loud linearly, or 1/4 of the noticeable volume change.
Thanks for clarifying this, AZREDFERN
+3dB is sound intensity and +10dB is perceived sound for when doubling. Commenter is Correct. It’s a common mistake.
This test makes absolutely no sense! :D
I think you don't understand it
These sound dampening mats essentially focus on eliminating reverberations that travel through car panels and by using a cymbal, it is my crude representation of said car panel. It's not perfect, but it does show that these mats do stop vibrations travelling through metal objects. Car Builders has a great intro to sound proofing materials that you might like to catch here - ua-cam.com/video/P4ylKyoY_oU/v-deo.html
I have some joints in my car and it creaks when I go over bumps, can I stuff these in small gaps to eliminate that?
I think you can, yes. I know Resonix use like a butyl putty for exactly this purpose to stop creaks and rattles, etc. I guess you could experiment with little strips and see if that has a similar effect as the Resonix product but I couldn't vouch for this as I haven't done it myself.
Sadly they dont have my car model ita too old
Ah, that sucks! Sorry to hear that. Hopefully you can find an alternative that does the job! Might be worth looking for a phone holder that clips on the the car vents, perhaps.
I’m surprised none of these car insulating videos mention the use of spray cork used in marine insulation to do the same job but also make the car a lot more comfortable in harsh weather. Same thing goes to wool insulation. spray cork would have been easier to install, better at sound insulation, makes it thermally insulated and it isn’t toxic or combustible. No toxic smoke or melting issues with sprayed cork.
Interesting! I'll have a look into this. Cheers!
Hi mate we're did u get the bulb from
I picked mine up on eBay but if I'm honest, I'm not sure I'd recommend it as it flickers quite a bit. I know some folks suggest it may be because of the voltage of the car or that the car battery doesn't have enough power to run it, etc. It was something like this one - tinyurl.com/3u6xrc9e - As I say, it might be worth trying it, but mine does have it's moments where it just flickers for a period of time and then stops.
Random q, but just picked up a 2016 Aygo and a couple of bulbs in the heating/air con unit need changing (behind the blue curve of the temp control and behind the options on the right of the selector). Is that a straightforward job?
If you remove the centre facia plate, it looks like the heating module comes out as one unit (basing this off of looking on eBay), so if the lights plug in there, it doesn't look too hard of a job. Haven't done it myself, but if you look on eBay at the control panel - tinyurl.com/5f8hhj7r - it looks like it just unclips and I am assuming lights plug into the back.
Wow , I thought I went mad when my Jaguar XJ ECU gave up and then bought an Aygo. I have never looked back as I halved my insurance Per Annum. My Jag cost £340 a year for Tax while my new Aygo is Zero money per year. £110 about what it used to cost me to fill an empty Jag petrol tank to full to get about 300 miles urban driving. Now with the Aygo I will pay about £55 for an empty tank to full and get 500 miles driving. Where can I go wrong anyone?
Love stories like this and it very much mirrors my own. Bravo!
Is it just me who can barely notice the difference all this made? Im thinking about doing my '78 Cavalier but if its not going to make much difference, i might forgo it and avoid any chance of rust forming behind a poorly adhered mat
Hi there. I think it's worth noting a few things. I've only focused on sound pressure here that is measured with a decibel meter. viewers on UA-cam seem to be addicted to decibel meter results even though it's only really part of the overall picture as it's only measuring sound pressure. It doesn't include timbre (that quality of a sound), which this does improve by turning something like an annoying whine into something more enjoyable. Texture is also missed and because you are adding a new material into the mix, it changes how sound travels and interacts with each object, creating a more pleasant place to be. Vibration is also improved, so if you have an older car, it will make a nice difference to the quality of your ride and I will caveat all of the above with this: Buy quality stuff - The sound deadening mats I used are only 50mil, but most these days are 70-80mil. buying quality materials matters, so if I were to do it again, I would likely start there.
A 3 db change is a doubling or 50% reduction in sound level. Also, a friend put new tires on her CRV it made a good reduction in road noise. Cheers
Jamie Hi im just about to get my first Aygo Auto :) but im interested in the Arm rest where did you get that one from please
Hi, Ron! The one I have is this one - tinyurl.com/3w8v3nex - It fits alright but the fitting nuts do tend to run loose over time, so you do have to tighten them periodically. I am considering picking one up from Armster, though. Bit more expensive but designed for the car - tinyurl.com/4sm3nsmm
Great video ! How did you remove the air vents trim ?
Thank you! You'll need to take the whole silver plate off, flip it over and the vents are attached with a couple of screws on the back
@ Okay, and is the silver plate easy to remove?
Yeah, if you use interior removal tools it makes it much easier.
I wonder how does it compare to mitsubishi mirage from the same year
Low profile tires have a higher sound level and are rougher riding.
The taller the tire wall the less noise as there is more rubber to absorb vibration.
Safety: as well as using axle stands, chock the wheel on the opposite corner both front and back of the tyre. Especially when working on a slippery, loose, or sloped surface! A pair of folding wheel chocks is cheap, or if you have scrap wood around you can make your own. A lot of sound deadening is reducing the pitch of the noise - that's what adding mass to a vibrating panel does. Low pitched rumbles are less annoying than whistles and hissing noises. It may not be much quieter to a sound meter but changing the timbre of the sound makes the ride more comfortable.
Thanks for adding to this so thoughtfully, Greg.
Thanks! Really helpful!
Glad it helped!
Have you got a link to this unit I'm just about to buy an Aygo and the only thing about the whole care is the lack of sat navigation/ phone connection thanks 👍🏻
Search for "86140-YV020" on eBay and it will bring up three button head units. That's the one you want and that's where I got mine 👍
Do you have to programme your steering controls to the radio
Hi, Georgina. No, it's very plug-and-play so as soon as you plug it all in you're good to go
They have spray on soundproofing.
Thanks for sharing this. It is something I definitely want to check out. Do you have any recommendations?
How is it on the motorway especially. I really want a 2021 aygo
It can get blown about a bit on motorways but it definitely holds it's own out there and is happy to cruise on the motorway, even if it doesn't always sound like it.
Hello and if my aygo do not have touch screen can i fitting oryginal toyota aygo touch screen??thank u
Yes, you should be fine. I can't vouch for this myself, but plenty of people on the Aygo forums have done it. One thing to note is that you'll obviously be missing the rear camera view unless you want to add this in yourself.
My lads just bought one of these, first car, and he’s 6ft 6. Fits in lovely.
Oh, wow! Good lad! A very prudent choice. Good on him!
I watched a simulation using cymbal, here's the thing, you don't have to patch all of the surface with the deadening material, the metal area that has flat surface is enough.
Yeah, you are spot on here and it's something I picked up on in my full soundproofing video.
Why are you calling it Brodit?
That's the name of it in Europe/UK. I believe the American version is called ProClip.
@@jamieaygo ohhhhh ok! I didn’t realize they named themselves differently in other countries, no wonder I’m confused
shoud've change scale in dBA, no dBb, difference will be 3-5 dB min
Ah, interesting. Will look into this, thanks!
my one's engine rumbles while it is idle
Depends what kind of rumble it is....These engines are known for being a bit on the noisy side but they are super reliable. Does the rumble make the whole car shake or is it just more of a gentle rumble?
