Hiking with Jenny
United States
Приєднався 17 сер 2020
Well hello! I'm Jenny and I am here to share my hiking adventures and what I have learned along the way.
I have a few years of hiking, backpacking, and thru hiking experience (including the Appalachian Trail in 2024). I am based in NH, so most of my videos focus on trails in New England, and preparing for the conditions expected in that climate.
I have always had a love for hiking, but did not become very serious about it until the pandemic, when I realized how important it was to spend time outside, connect with nature, and exercise one's body and mind for a healthier lifestyle!
As with anything, starting out as a beginner backpacker did not always go smoothly! I try to show the mistakes I have made along the way so you can learn from them too. Anything I review is my own genuine opinion.

Thanks for sharing about the logistical challenges. I’m going to learn a lot more about the NET through you.
Wow… I would probably not have suggested going under that bridge, but you made it! I love kayaking. It is quite peaceful watching this video.
Thanks for sharing your experience of our event. Glad you enjoyed your time with us. Hoping to see ya again next year!
Thank you for organizing it!
Nice little quick overnight hike. Sometimes you just need a night in the woods. Get a little peace back. I like trails that have these nice shelter sites too. Was there privies on this trail?
OOHHH, I never knew about this! I'll have to try to make it one year after I retire! So cool you meet Shug, and Derek - I watched so many of both of their videos when first trying to figure out my hammock gear, the do's & don'ts, etc. And I'm sure they played lots of songs, but not a better one to catch for recording on the first night - Mama Rock Me - love that song!
That's a great lesson to know when to turn around. Safety over summits. That could get quite sketchy with all that snow trying to find the trail again in the dark. Be safe.
That burgerbush story had me giggling all through it. Thanks for sharing it. Some of these stories about the Appalachian Trail are so entertaining....
Do you still like kayaking? That is one of my favorite outdoor activities. I love exploring on a boat, especially when it's warm and nice and you can even stop somewhere for a swim if it's safe and you don't have alligators.
HANGCON!! I just thought that you probably don't have the condensation issue in a hammock like we tent campers do. Yet another reason to consider hammock camping over tents... hmmmm
Thanks for mentioning exactly where the trail went. It gives me memories walking down that very trail trying to debate whether to camp at the shelter or walk right into town.
Woah, this is a first! Jenny not camping in a hammock? Looks like a nice little setup in that shelter. I stayed in a lot of shelters while hiking the Appalachian Trail.
Those views are ABSOLUTELY STUNNING!! When can I see views like that again? I love backpacking.
What is that storage area in your hammock set up? Is that an extra pocket in the hammock or is it between your quilt and your hammock wall? They seem to be pretty secure and not moving anywhere. I like that.
In loving memory of Hal?? Noooo your cat?
Those are some very beautiful fall views. Seems like a great time of year to hike the trail indeed! I want to summit another mountain after watching this.
We had a blast at our first Hangcon. Have you checked out the internal pole mods? Game changer! It gives you so much more room under your tarp and by simply easing up the tension of your guylines, instantly goes to porch mode! Love mine. Met Matt with Mountain Made Gear. He's going to make me a hammock. His guyline tension (no hardware) intrigued me. We learned so much! Its funny, so many people described themselves as introverts, but were so nice and welcoming! And the raffle? OMG. We got the yobogear chair stands! My wife was so excited!
It’s always really cool learning about the history of the area you are in. Thanks for sharing the hike. And a great view of Manadnock. I need to hike that mountain someday.
@@sticktheeagle I’ve hiked it many times! It’s the start and end point for the Monadnock Sunapee Greenway and the Wantastiquet-Monadnock Trail. Both long distance trails I’ve done. And some people choose to end their NET thru hikes there as well, by taking the Metacomet-Monadnock Trail in NH.
Wow, I didn’t pick up on anything wrong in your relationship w/ Brian. He was so great visiting on the AT & seemed so thoughtful. But, life is not always obvious over UA-cam. I’m glad you know yourself & know what you want & need. Hopefully you’ll keep finding what you need. Wishing you the best ❤
I was thinking of going now wish I would have. If I’d known you & Shug we’re gonna be there I may have grabbed a friend & made it. I’d love my husband who is a musician to come w/ me. Maybe next year if he’s not too busy or I’ll grab a friend.
@@sheilahenry7279 I highly recommend checking it out!
Check us out next year. Same place, January 15-19.
24:52 that inverted cloud look, especially with a sunrise, never ceases to amaze
“Jenny’s just videotaping the whole thing” 😂 You’ve had some amazing views on this trip. I remember Garfield Pond but the trail didn’t go near enough to the pond for me to warrant going over there since I knew there was water on trail at Garfield Ridge.
Great to see you again. Looks like everyone had a great time. Wish I'd known since I live on the other side of FL and could have caught the Amtrak. Mb next year. Thanks for sharing!
January 15-19, 2026
Isn’t that amazing how we can be disappointed at how the day goes sometimes but then it creates that beautiful moment that wouldn’t have happened if our day went as planned? I can’t count how many times that has happened. Beautiful editing skills in this video too.
Thank you! And that kind of relates to what we were talking about today about how sometimes bad things happen but then it opens the door to good things.
I did the same thing on that mountain… Bald plate? Bald pate? Also relate to looking at a blowdown and saying “should I just get on the ground and roll?” Lol.
Do you still use the poncho tarp for the same reasons? That’s a lot of great reasons.
Yes to most! Though I haven't used it since as a shower curtain or privacy screen.
Remember you are in the wilderness and it’s not always safe but it’s not Afghanistan. You shouldn’t have to worry about people, just animals. Remember if you get in trouble drive your thumb as far into their eye as you can. Works great. Best wishes.😊
Your trail name is “Not yet?” That’s the first time I’ve heard of you speak of a trail name. 😮 What an incredible way of expressing the mental battle all thru hikers go through at one point or another! I too remember not being able to catch Frizzle and Nickels, and then I would find the two of them sitting on top of the next hill. Finding our friends can make us go from so discouraged to feel so warm inside and thankful for our friends…
I mentioned it early on in the videos that a day hiker gave it to me. An AT thru hiker later said that it was a very common trail name and they’d met like 3 other people with the same name. As a type 4, I have to be unique so I don’t use that trail name anymore. 😆
@ it is a common name. I can understand that. It’s the same reason I added the eagle part back into my name after I learned of so many sticks.
@@sticktheeagle I never met another Stick! But I bet there aren't any other Stick the Eagles out there!
@@HikingwithJenny I met two other sticks that both ended up faster than me and got ahead of me in Virginia and beyond
@ 17:55 war paint
“You don’t have to be the fastest one. You just have to keep it up and keep walking.” ALL the truth is sitting right there. That’s what thruhiking is about. WELL SAID.
It took a long time to figure that out!
You seem so confident and happy in this video. Seems like thruhiking in nature is going to keep pulling you back to it. Nice development as a thruhiker throughout this series.
Thank you!
I’m pretty sure Glastonbury Mountain is the one that they took the stairs down for because they thought it was unstable. But it didn’t stop one unnamed person from still finding a way up there…
They did! I may have been among the last people to climb that tower legally! It was sketchy even back then.
Very nice spot. Stratton Pond. I enjoyed staying in this shelter, and the three of us had this place all to ourselves. Nickels and Frizzle went swimming again here, but as was typical I showed up late about two hours after they did.
I tried to swim at all of the ponds when I was in VT! That state has the best swimming spots IMO. Water not too cold in July, and no leaches!
@ no leeches is a big thing… are they more common in Maine then? Or are they seasonal?
@@sticktheeagleI don’t know but when I got to Maine that’s all I heard about was the leeches in the water!
@@HikingwithJenny same!!
“I think one of the AT hikers grunted at me” you know, your comments now are making me laugh out loud. I needed more of that in my life.
Awesome Jenny! It’s the best when you’re surrounded by people with the same interests. Thanks for sharing
Thanks! Always a good feeling to be surrounded by like minded people!
Styles Peak is the one spot on the Appalachian Trail where I spotted my moose. And you camped up there!
I never saw a moose! They love those high places!
11:55 “not that I’m ready to go hike the AT or anything” but I’m getting comfortable… I think the AT is in your future
Do you think so? Oh man! I dunno!
I dropped a water bottle down into that gorge and slid down the rocks to get it. The hard part was coming back up on loose rocks. I felt like I was creating a mini landslide.
That sounds really scary!
I stayed at Clarendon shelter too. It was a nice shelter and lots of other sites around too.
What? I wish I had known that regarding the easier way to the peak of Killington. That blue blaze trail was no joke.
Aye, just past the Cooper Pooper!
Now I’m seeing familiar places!! Never checked out Pico camp since it was a half mile off trail. Got off at Route 4 and stayed at Frizzle hostel.
I did not know she was from VT. Never actually met her.
@ She’s from Massachusetts. But her parents came to visit there and included Nickels and I.
@@sticktheeagle Oh, that was nice!
I had a really good experience at The Yellow Deli on my thru hike. Stay there just a night and you’ll be just fine.
That’s what I’ve heard too!
I left some tortillas in a hiker box early on in the trail. I wasn’t using them and a subscriber sent me some. I do remember that I carried Advil from Georgia to Vermont and had never used it, so I finally got rid of it. I wished I’d had it when I got hurt in New Hampshire. But I still made do.
"Rain, Rain, Rain... welcome to the Long Trail". Nice welcoming song. Love that you can make some joy out of it and share it with your viewers.
Shug: "I'm not scared in the woods. I'm scared in the real world." 13:11. Truth. You can put that on a shirt or a sign or something. I'd buy it.
13 ounces for hammock, bug net and gear loft? Not including the tarp I guess. That's really amazing. If I get a backpacking hammock, I am going to use a bit of your advice.
@@sticktheeagle and that’s not even gonna be his lightest one he said! He’s selling custom hammocks for $150. Hammock, bug net, and gear loft. Very reasonable for what you get. I’d buy one but I’m trying not to hoard gear lol.
@ $150? I’ll buy one!!
That looks like a fun event to attend. I don't know about camping near Gators though 😅. That one hammock has a lot of pretty colors. 💖. Just curious how do you get comfortable when you're only laying on your back? 😮. The campfire 🔥 cooking was pretty cool. I'm glad you were able to get out and have some fun. Thanks for sharing your adventures with us. Happy Trails! 🚶🥾🏕️🌲🔥🐊😜
@@joankline343 Thanks! I’m actually mostly a side sleeper, even in a hammock! I usually just curl into a ball like I normally would in a bed.
@HikingwithJenny haha 🤣 I didn't think that was possible. I always wondered how anyone could get any rest in one of them. I figured must be they didn't have any back problems. Did you see any alligators while you there?
@@joankline343 I haven’t seen any gators!
Congratulations on your early start!! I always felt amazing when I got out of camp before 7. It was rare for me too. Probably ten times, if that, on the Appalachian Trail.
I am definitely NOT a morning person!
