Land Rover Discovery 2 On Steel Wheels - A Quick Update
Переглядів 10 тис.3 роки тому
In my last tire video, I downgraded the tires on my Discovery 2 from 285/75's to 235/85's. I loved the performance, but wasn't sure about how they looked. In this video, I change out the wheels to black steel wheels to complete the look I was going for and I think they look great.

I Put Skinny Off Road Tires on my Land Rover Discovery 2 - Narrow Tires Work Well
Переглядів 36 тис.3 роки тому
Tired of the sacrifices made for big off-road tires, I decided to "downgrade" to a narrower off-road tire. For my use, these skinny off-road tires, or pizza cutters, work really well. For more info on narrow tires, skinny tires or "pizza cutters" check out this really old paper about them: web.archive.org/web/20110210181832/www.expeditionswest.com/research/white_papers/tire_selection_rev1.html

I’ll be curious about what you think of the rugged treks. They’ve been on mine for a couple years.
Downloaded!
The Wild Plan app looks fantastic! Of course, I'm an Android user- so I hope it's massively successful! I just bought a 2014 LR4 25th Anniversary Edition and it's my first foray into the Land Rover world. I love it way more than I thought I was going to. I really hope to get it out West and do some overlanding out there eventually (I'm in Florida). Looking forward to following some of your adventures, as well.
Thanks. I really hope to get it on Android in the future. I'll follow up here if I do. Congrats on the LR4, they really are great. Land Rovers can be frustrating but I think it's worth it. This is my second. Third if you count an old Jaguar ;)
I actually prefer the look of pizza cutters
I have a 2015 LR4 SCV6 about to hit 10yr/ 100,000 miles🎉 its my 3rd Land Rover , gave up a Gen5 4Runner you spoke of for Landy because I missed my earlier 2012 LR4… I think they are ‘best all around’ . Looked at the new Defender but TBH it seems too ‘bronco’ like. Kinda feel like the LR4 kept traditional look and the new Land Rovers are loosing styling. So I decided to buy her a few birthday overlanding/surf upgrades instead 😅 enjoy yours 🤙🏽
That's awesome. I wanted a 4Runner before getting the LR4 but I'm so glad I didn't go that route. Yes, this LR4 is more quirky, but it's so much better in every way.
Install looks great. Do you have a link to the lip mount you used? I have a 2011 lr4 and a spare 2m mobile.
I don't have a link but it's a Diamond lip mount if that helps.
I can't make out, a Luck 8 Disco 1 what spring part gives 5/8" lift for $15? Can't understand that last word he says
Sorry, if that wasn't clear. I used the Disco 1 rear spring perches for an additional 5/8 of lift. They are really cheap at Lucky 8.
In-line thermo is the number 1 thing to do with a Disco 1/2!!! It's pretty much a must
When i was a kid the only people who have really wide and fat tires were people who did dedicated rock crawling for the much larger contact patches and not usually having to worry about Sand and Mud. I have no idea how the “big and fat” tire craze happened. Even in the military we didn’t use extremely large tires relative to the vehicle sizes.
I am 210 all the time. Will need to do these mods!!
210 is pretty hot. I would definitely do these mods to bring that down. In the winter, you should be seeing 188-192 ish.
Do you have a link for that antenna?
Just Google "Comet 2x4 antenna".
Man you can talk!! Interesting personal story!
235/85r16 orv245/75r16? On a 2" lift?
I was using 235/85 on this at the time. They look good but the 245 would probably look less skinny.
Belle réalisation 73's F4LPH
2012 V8 LUX HD package. From 68k to 140k still running great, off road no problem.
Nice. I love hearing that.
I'm just discovering this radio. My wife hates having mobiles in the car on road trips. This thing is getting installed in her car ASAP! The app has a dark mode, correct? Really cool find, thanks for sharing the video🤙
You will be disappointed in the app. It's functional but clunky. I wish they put more effort into it.
@fitzventure it looks like some version of what btech had for their gmrs pro. It's definitely got upsides but the downsides were pretty annoying. Might be nice to run out of my car while I'm connected inside during the winter
Stop talking and show something !!!
any update to the radio? how do you like it?
Oh yeah, I like it. Used it on an 8 overlanding trip and it worked great. I hate the app, it's functional but clunky. As an app developer, I might take a stab at writing my own app for it.
They got the shape right, like a hand granade. Added an aluminum housing & 180 thermostat. And aluminum overflow & hose fittings. Here in AZ..04 Disco 2HSE
More videos, please
I'm working on it.
Cheese cutters are the best tyres. Fat tyres are useless.......
I love your videos! Does the temp go up if you turn the ac on?
I envy you guys that own one of these , I only own a RR evoque ( me and wife share it ) but would love to own a big RR/LR esp for the air suspensions , like you cant understand others changing them to springs to me seems lazy , yes people say its unreliable but everytime I see someone on UA-cam fixing them its always on the original bags / sensors to not bad really you can now buy the bags from others at a cheaper price and owning a scanner is a must. To me owning a vehicle like this goes bad most of the time due to bad maintenance or bodgy work by previous owner dont get me wrong a vehicle of this age will have issue due to age the problem is the cost of certain parts but then dont buy one if you cant afford the maintenance or parts its not like a small family 2 wheel car its a beast 4x4 . Anyways only reason I dont own is in the UK road tax cost a fortune also insurance and now the price of fuel nothing like you guys what you pay for the gallon is what we pay for the litre lol P.S if you havent already watch a chanel called LRTIME its a german couple that does a lot of work on these both the LR3/4
Hell yeah!! I'm running the same tyres, it's the most validated I've ever felt! :D
You didn’t lose 1”, you lost 1/2”. 1/2 at the top and 1/2 at the bottom. Mine are 235/70/16 and do the job.
I have the vrn7500 and Yaesu ftm 400. The Yaesu outperforms the 7500 in all radio receive/transmit/filtering/aprs ui. That being said, I have both installed and the vero is an aprs igate and 2 of 16 banks are setup as gmrs channels
I have several Yaesus as well, but I just like how clean this install is. Mostly used for truck-to-truck comms so it doesn't have to be the best.
A series of unfortunate events lead me to purchasing a 2000 disco 2, I'd always wanted an off-road capable vehicle. Seeing all the things people have done to theirs gets me excited to get mine back to its former glory, inside and out. I love the raptor liner finish you've achieved with yours, and it's inspired me to do the same color to mine. Love the military green.
Swapped my 2018 4Runner for a 2013 V8 LR4 and have had it from 72,000 mi to its current 110,000. Has been brilliant on and off road. Congrats. Also, smart comments about tire sizes and lift and center of gravity etc. - enjoy the truck!
any major issues in the last 38,000 miles?
@@Spartansrule118 Burns through tires fast; am about 60% done a pair of Falken Wildpeak AT3Ws after maybe 15,000 mi which is pretty high usage. I've taken it on many off-road adventures and am just going through a pretty heavy list of "to-dos" now. Immediately I need to replace both drive shafts ($3K damage from off-roading). Soon I'll need to replace tires (see prior point) and then do another full transmission service ("lifetime fluids" is b.s. - think more like every 50K miles), then I'll need to do front and rear sway bar bushings ($1700) and Front lower control arms. most of this is self-inflicted from hard off-road use.
@@Ta50039 thank you so much. wishing you all the best going forward with your Land Rover :)
I just aquired a 2002 Discovery 2 wearing 255/55/18 tires. I'm getting 16" steel wheels and going to get 235/85/16 tires. I run 235's on my F250 and it handles excellent. It's also better in snow with 235's. Skinny tires are an upgrade, not a downgrade
good priorities. I'm getting a 2.5 inch lift on my wrangler jk, rather than a 3 or 4 inch lift, and 286/75r17 rather than 35 x12.5x17. Overlanding doesn't require big tires. I'm watching overlanding creators in Australia and they all prefer smaller tires. especially traveling all over the world. Check out "The road chose me". Also, when you air down a narrow tire, it spreads out more front to back and travels more like a track vehicle as apposed to 35's that flatten sideways.
Do you have to reach under the seat every time you want to turn the radio on/off? Or can you do that from the corded mic?
you can turn off and on via the app
I’ve owned a lr3 and lr4 and I’ve spend, well wasted thousands of dollars due to the unreliability. Im now selling my lr4 and buying a Lexus lx or gx. I totally give up on Land Rover . And you should quit while you’re ahead.
I own an LR4 HSE, best vehicle I've ever owned, never had an issue with it, sounds like you bought a lemon.
good luck using the lexus offroad , thats if you are going offroad , LR are good if you can do the work yourself
..its practicality over aesthetic....newbie question: how much PSI will you leave in your skinny tire for off-roading?
The Range Rover Classic was launched in 1970 with 205 x 16 M+S tyres. They worked incredibly well and contributed to that vehicle's tremendous, legendary performance on and off road. The styling of the standard 2 door vehicle meant that these tyres looked perfect in the wheel arches. They were so good that UK tyre suppliers (not necessarily manufacturers ) Michelin and Blockley, the latter making an exact reproduction of the original tread pattern, have reintroduced them.
Great install and I like the radio!
Most unreliable SUV of All Time😢
Have you ever owned one I bet you havent
I think 235/85r16 is a stock Defender tire. Question is: to go with this or a 245/75r16s??? Still bigger than stock overall...
Get an in-line thermostat and be happy(er). It's an easy, inexpensive, and the best solution.
Your new tires are still taller than the factory 29" tall spec, so you're still winning!
I had a OEM 180F thermostat put in recently and now my scangauge is showing my coolant temp is running at 210-220F. It was burped/bled properly as far as I know. I can't seem to figure out the issue. Any suggestions?
I just bought a replacement auxiliary battery in the UK........£54
Hey that's cool I'm the guy down in Tucson with the gray and black Raptor liner D2 and we spoke before on a different video of yours. Funny I just got an lr3 in Immaculate condition about 3 months ago so I just moved up to the terrain response air suspension World myself LOL I must say it's a little intimidating and a little nerve-wracking but I'm learning it well. I have it on some all-terrain tires already and I'm going to get the sya kit so that I can have a lift but still totally soft . I did rods at first but they stiffen it up too much I want to have it lifted and soft. I am glad to have the 4.4 Jaguar V8 even though it's 300 horsepower. One thing I noticed off-road is you need to press the triangle button to turn off Dynamic stability or it will ruin anything you're doing with traction control working too hard LOL yeah I think off-road the D2 has much better visibility out the front over that little Hood. I think these newer ones are definitely a learning experience even though they try to do the work for you you have to learn how to let them do the work if that makes sense haha I feel like the off-road we have in Arizona doesn't quite fit into any of the categories very well. Yeah the sand mode is but the rest of them are kind of strange because if we go up something that's really cross axles and funky you're thinking Rock crawl but Rock crawl limits the throttle so damn much so I either use Rock crawl but give it tons of pedal or I select no modes and just have it in low range manual mode second. I kept my D2 there's way too much work into it. Early this year I did terra firma a 4-in lift including Johnny joints Tom Woods complete sway bar disconnects everything. I found my lr3 for 5 grand after selling an Audi I purchased at the auction for $1,200 that was in great shape LOL
A D2 and a LR, best of both worlds.
@@fitzventure yes absolutely unique different
Have two LR4’s and still going strong
what year and how much mileage?
Thanks for the video, I have an Lr3 and love it!! Definitely right about the visibility!! Compared to my previous fj cruiser..
Great stories. 2012 LR4 owner here...Can't wait for more vids. Subbed. T.Y.
Fantastic machines
I'm moving away from my mud terrains 315/70 17 baja boss. And jumping into a 255/85 17 baja boss AT Should install this coming week. On top of all the benefits I hope they get more silent but I do love the looks of the 315s and I have a feeling the 315 muds will still be better off road than the pizza cutter ATs Has anyone done that change?
It’s not a cliche they’re super shite, but comfortable, but still very unreliable and shite unfortunately
Nahhh
The LR3 is the correct version of this truck.
Believe me. I wish it had the 4.4 V8.
That's what I have .....check out Lr time...they specialize in that truck.....
I have a D2 built on 35s and an lr3 stock except for some 265/65-18 Falkens. The Lr3 is my daily and the D2 is the trail truck. Whenever I take the lr3 offroad Im quickly reminded of its limitations. As when I drive the D2 on the highway, Im reminded how comfortable the lr3 is! That said I prefer the D2 for long offroad trips simply because its a more basic platform. Most things can be repaired with hand tools. The lr3 can have a sensor go out and leave the truck a brick. When Im in the middle of nowhere and something goes bad, I know I have a better chance of fixing the D2 vs the lr3
Yeah, this one of my concerns with the LR4. My D2 was very reliable. Never left me stranded. But my goodness is the LR4 comfortable.
