Can we still find beauty during horrible times? Does everything really happen for a reason?
My name is Kate and I’m a historian at Duke Divinity School. My book, Blessed: A History of the American Prosperity Gospel (Oxford University Press, 2013), received widespread media attention as the first history of the movement based on divine promises of health, wealth, and happiness.
My memoir, Everything Happens for a Reason (and other lies I’ve loved) (Random House, 2018), tells the story of my struggle to understand the personal and intellectual dimensions of the American belief that all tragedies are tests of character.

Excellent interview!! Thanks!! Incredible book!!
Oh Kate, how I adore you!!

Boom. Truth bomb!!
“Forgiveness is losing the desire to have had a better past”. This resonates with me. I kept going back and listening to that quote, I wrote it down to keep in front of me. What a profound truth that I need to apply daily. Thank you ❤.
Perhaps Charles could contact in some way with Father Greg Boyle. Father G has loooong experience with healing wounds.
What makes a life beautiful...? 🤔
Sounds like Sam's friend maybe has ME/CFS illness. This is what I have and am largely housebound in my 20s. This podcast really spoke to me. Strange how you can be given or find hope in the face of the worst of circumstances - a hope that doesn't say 'it will all get better' etc. But it's still hope.
Normally I can listen to your podcast while walking around the house or outside, doing things - the usual multi tasking that keeps many of us feeling simultaneously productive and overwhelmed. This podcast stopped me in my tracks. I could do nothing else but sit on the edge of the bed and listen, tears streaking my face. Being with... this concepts will stick with me - I hope for a very long time. Thank you to Rev Wells, you and all that made these stories come alive and into my home, my heart this morning.
"the fire of hope" is a beautiful phrase that sticks with me. I also deeply resonated with the idea of not focusing on a successful or happy or perfect life but a beautiful one. I needed those words.
This is such a beautiful podcast. Kate you are a lovely soul. Balm for this world!

Is there a transcript of the piece Sam read about hope?
❤❤❤❤❤
The older I get, the more I dislike those kinds of platitudes. Of course they have their place, but I feel like they get used too much.
I can't love this enough.
You are a treasure and I'm so glad we're on the planet at the same time 🫰🏽❤️
Please cite what is said at 33:23 by Kate. Her last word in unintelligible. Thanks.
Fr. Greg often says to the homies, "what a gift it would be to have a son like you"...♥️
What a beautiful podcast , just what I needed today
Absolutely beautiful. This is what my heart needed as I was looking at our political landscape this morning and feeling scared for the future. Hope is a fire.❤
Thank you😢
What a profound poem. It touched my soul. Thank you for this awesome interview and everything else you do.
“Come let us reason together “ 😊📖✝️
While I agree that a child can handle more than over protective parents want them to, it’s not your place. That’s a really arrogant stance to take. It’s not you that has to deal with the scared child at night. Children will learn about death soon enough. That’s what hamsters are for
Thank you Kate. As ever, your interviews enrich our ability to feel, to understand our feelings and expand those feelings and insight.
Wow. “Do they do anything for another person that genuinely cannot benefit themselves?”
Thank you very much ❤
I busted out crying at this snip. I haven't even watched the entire interview. It is so hard to forgive myself for my humanness. Day by day.
So true!!! Always being real, Kate!!
What an amazing woman - wow
Heart expanding - mind ❤blowing. I well re❤counted. So well interviewed.
Thank you!
so good
Perfect and so timely today.
So WISE, so HEALING, so NEEDED in this moment!! Thank you Kate! Thank you Parker! sharing far and wide and mostly amplifying the message in my own heart and life!
One of my heroes as well, knew that I too would find hope on this dark day.
Thank you. I needed this after yesterday's election and the darkness and sadness I feel today.
Thank you both for reaching out a life affirming hand. You
Thank you so much for this heart felt experience.
Two of my favorite humans! Today I needed these words more than ever. Thank you
Especially today! Thank you. I printed out Parker's poem to put on my fridge. Powerful and helpful words.
I am 52. It is too late for me to become an astronaut, among other things.
Wise words.
Many thanks for this interview TODAY?
Everything does happen for a reason and the reason is to reveal to us that we are not in control
This is so helpful and deeply comforting. Thank you.
Defending a centre that can not hold has no reason to exist but by the choices we make. To circumvent life by it happened for a reason are balancing act between good or bad intention. If it's bad pray for it if it's good be grateful ❤
Maybe the point of this or just what I got out of it is well. I think that there's reason first stuff. I want to believe that and it could be that. Just you don't know why sometimes. Yes, stuff does just happen? I don't think it happens for no reason. I just don't know where it is because it's something. I gotta understand that. No one can really understand that evil is something. It's just you don't know why I guess that's okay.Think what I got out of it is just if you don't really know why something happens and just don't think about it too much and that stuff just happens sometimes
LOVED the book, and the Netflix series. . . .so enjoyed this conversation!
Love this opportunity. Where would we find the playlist mentioned?
