Gachaterra?
THIS ONE OF MY FAVORITE BANDS EVER ....THANK YOU FOR REACTING TO THIS
New vintage? Hell yes! They have assimilated dozens of different genres and styles and techniques. They will sound very different from song to song, album to album.
Nice.
The word “prodigy” gets thrown around way too much. In this case, it is fully deserved. Lisa-X has been posting music on youtube since she was seven, did credible covers of Dream Theater and Polyphia at 10, and has had her own band since she was 13. The core members of Lisa-X band were Lisa-X, Rina on vocals and Hazuki, formerly of Disqualia and now the lead guitarist for Nemophila, on co-lead guitar. Here she is doing a playthrough with Hazuki on “Just Be My Treasure”: ua-cam.com/video/mN_oLqTka6M/v-deo.html “One More Chance Is Enough” with Billy Sheehan (!) on bass (Sheehan is on the consensus short list of candidates for best rock bassist in the world). ua-cam.com/video/PzsqmnEa89c/v-deo.html Rina left the band in 2022 and they took a hiatus to rebuild. They re-emerged as Koiai, and can legitimately claim to be a supergroup. Kotono joined them after stints with various groups including Ironbunny and a previous collaboration with Lisa-X. The big catch was Kanade Sato on drums. Sato is also a member of Muses and is in big demand as a session drummer. She is often compared with the already legendary Senri Kawaguchi. Wakazaemon has been appearing as a guest on bass. She frequently tours with Marty Friedman and was also a member of East of Eden. Here are two more links worth checking out. The first one is Lisa’s 2017 appearance at the annual female rock festival organized by Show-Ya-she is up there with some of the best guitarists in the world and they clearly love sharing the stage with her. The second one is her collaboration with the even younger drum phenom, Yoyoka Soma, who is herself a force of nature. At NaonのYaon (age 12): ua-cam.com/video/hbeW7Yuf-a0/v-deo.html With Yoyoka: ua-cam.com/video/B97HKxg4Cwk/v-deo.html Here are more links to Koiai: ua-cam.com/video/g-JEUWnTgJY/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/nQOhmO7Af2I/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/2njAh58OA10/v-deo.html (cover of Dirty Loops version) Overall, rock is not only in good hands, but arguably has been taken over by Japanese women. The future looks great!
Great band, good songs but the production needs some work, IMO. Kotono's vocals often get buried in the mix to the point that lyrics are hard to hear. Your pronunciations aren't far off apart from some slightly weird emphasis on some syllables.
Best new-ish band from Japan. From the remains of the Li-sa-X Band, after the singer left. Li-sa-X and Hazuki- guitars, Kotono- Lead vocals, Kanade- Drums and finally this week Wakazaemon- Bass, who had previously been guesting on recordings while still playing for another Japanese band East Of Eden. For more metal try A New Picture Official Music Video. Got the latest 3rd CD/EP this week and have the previous two, all of which are quality music. Kotono from Iron Bunny. As usual, I agree with everything you said.
Yea a little more sophisticated maturity with this project but they do have heavier elements
You say Toto, I say Steely Dan mid 70's (The Royal Scam?). Has Gadd, Carleton & Dias sensibilities with a Fagen/Becker feel. Thanks for the reaction to this.
I love how the Japanese ladies are so fluid in whom they work with. It seems like such a sorority, with no interband jealousies. I think Show-ya and their example for decades of lifting up the newer generations in a collaborative environment has really helped the creative universe of Japanese female rock and metal. Nao has alot to do with that as well, leading by example. All these ladies interweave throughout time with each other creating astounding music.
While I lament the passing of what Nemo was for 5 years, I still respect Saki for who she is, what she did for the other four ladies, and have no doubt in my mind that she will share the stage many more times in the next few decades with Hazuki, Mayu, H-san and Tamu in new and different incarnations.
I've always pronounced it Koi (like the carp) - Ai (aye like Japanese for love), their name is somewhat ambiguous and can have multiple meaning, including the names of their first two EPs, Deep Love & Deep Indigo. Happy you finally got around to this, been badgering you for long enough. ;) Although I hear the Toto comparison in terms of the intricate drums, the arrangement chops and harmonic content, not hearing 'Africa' itself quite so much other than the laid back elements. One comparison I hear more and would suggest you check out because of the drum groove, would be 'Take Cover' by Mr. Big (one of Li-sa's mentors/teachers is Paul Gilbert). Infact Li-sa, Kanade and Wakazaemon will be playing in Tokyo as the backing band for singer Eric Martin on 18th December at Nihonbashi Mitsui Hall, doing a set of songs from Mr.Big's back catalogue. Not all of their songs sound like this, they can play almost any style so there's a definite arc to their releases as they're trying to figure out their preferred sound. The first EP for the most part is quite poppy & more electronic sounding with added melodic twiddling. The second EP varies quite wildly in tone, getting pretty heavy in places, 'A New Picture' is a fan favourite with a great live MV. The latest 3rd EP is their first with a proper rhythm section on all the recordings, with Wakazaemon handling the low end throughout and it makes a nice difference to the quality/polish of the overall sound and underlying grooves. Although she'd played support drums from their very first gig, Kanade Sato only officially became a member on the band's 1st anniversary which was a couple of months after the 2nd EP was released last October. Wakazaemon actually left East of Eden a couple of weeks ago, so there's been rumours/hopes that she might became a permanent addition. I'm skeptical only because of the sheer number of other active support gigs she's involved in. To date there's only the 3 EPs (each with 5 songs) and a handful of covers (an arrangement of the Dirty Loops version of Hikaru Utada's 'Automatic' done by the full band with LI-sa's brother Kazuma on bass, Polyphia's 'ABC' done by the core trio before the band was formed and a duet type cover of 'Better' by K-Pop group Twice by Kotono & Li-sa-X). So excluding the extra stuff on the sold out first domestic concert Blu-ray, you can listen to everything they've properly recorded in just eighteen tracks.
“they’re trying to figure out their preferred sound” From the translation of a recent interview with Young Guitar… Li-sa-X: “Up until now, I was trying to figure out what kind of sound would fit Koiai, and had a feeling I could finally release it in the next album.” Next album is referring to the 3rd EP. I did make a post about the interview, but some of the translations came out iffy/questionable, and so I didn’t keep it. I had put the image of the issue into Japanese text, and the text into English translation. Not perfect, but I get the gist of things though.
If you had watched a different video, like say "A New Picture" perhaps, it would have been more like what you were expecting (but also not). That said this way you get to see a better representation of what this band is like, rather than your expectation (and you can still go back and watch "A New Picture"). Their cover of Polyphia's ABC was impressive, but not just for the guitar work, Kotono matched the vocals of Sophia Black which was no small feat.
Hazuki is still playing in Nemophila, she has not left. Koiais’ style incorporates fusion. The EP which I have purchased contains some very interesting tracks. Kotono was a singer in Iron Bunny. The Toto reference is a predictable in the sense that any band the uses particular drum patterns is inevitably compared to them.
Their song, “A New Picture,” has a change that will definitely catch you by surprise. It’s live and your bass player participates.
If you want what you were looking for then I'd check out " A New Picture " - it's much more experimental and showcases all their talents 🤷♂ - AND it will surprise you guaranteed !
What a crapload of talent! Getting Kanade to join was a major coup for them. Wakazaemon has left East of Eden, so there is the possibility that she might join KOIAI as an official member. And your initial pronunciations were correct. :)
I did the same thing with the Gibson/Epiphone videos and discovered Kaho. She primarily uses PRS in their concerts and she IS an excellent lead guitarist.
Ale being a Spector bass signature artist at 14 years old is crazy.
Pau is the main songwriter in The Warning.
Extremely talent musicians. Huge sound by this power trio.
Metal fusion
In an interview Kanami said she found composing music over simple rock progressions to be difficult. Well, she figured it out and signficantly overachieved. As you said, many standard box patterns in the basic structure of this song (and so many Band-Maid songs) but the eventual outcome has so much tasteful instrumentation and arrangement.
Another great breakdown and analysis of this epic masterpiece. Love how you bring the emotions and expressing how you were feeling. I love watching reactors, especially those with music backgrounds.. As many will point out something I may have overlooked. Only adds to my enjoyment of the Maids even more! On a side note...You posted this 5 days ago...5 days ago I got to watch this live for the first time at the ZEPP Haneda show. And extremely fortunate to having to watch it a second time on the second night of ZEPP tour. They opened with this song and it was amazing. There were cameras setup much like they do when they release concerts on streaming or DVD/BD releases. So hopefully something will be released sooner than later. The visual live was amazing. I won't spoil it for those who haven't seen it live yet, but wow! Just wow! PO!🕊 🤘😆🤘
I have an autographed copy of their 1st CD!
I'm really enjoying watching your journey getting to know the Warning. A couple things, if you haven't already - check out videos of LIzzy Hale giving Dani her guitar. Also, a couple great vids to check out from their younger years - Survive at the Las Vegas Tech Talk, and also 21st Century Blood - great video, great song. Keep rocking!
5 songs? packed in one♪
Brilliant analysis of what might just be my favourite BM song. I knew this would be good when your eyes lit up at the 16ths in the second verse! And I can’t believe I never noticed that the intro build was repeated in the bridge - they have such wildly different emotional tones. Amazing job on MISA’s basslines, too! You brought out so much nuance in there.
No other band would burn so many musical ideas in one song....they would've written 6 average songs....instead of imho 1 epic rock song
.......but.......Kanami
Yes.....finally.....Kanami is a great guitarist....however....as a composer/arranger.....she is a genius.....she writes lead riffs and buries them in the music as support instead of feeding her ego with solos....not since the Beatles has a composer been so prolific and consistent Kobato/Tono....this era's Lennon/McCartney....thanks for the work on the cover....(and outtakes)....prime stuff man
MISA MISA MISA!!!!! Yo Mota Yo Mota Yo Mota!
Hello Mota. Well done
I just say Kanami's special. Her music has the character that's slightly weird, but very addictive once you know it better. And the weirdness becomes the thing that you love it for. The music is picturesque, thought provoking and damn catchy in its own way.
BAND-MAID is an example. A really positive, healthy one. I can't speak for others, but I want to be that, too.
Band-Maid's first one-man show was on Saiki's birthday (Feb. 8) in 2014 iirc. They had another show three days later, so that gives the actual timeframe of when Misa considered leaving the band. Somewhere along the line, some fans mistook something said in an interview that the Seattle show in 2016 was when she was considering leaving, but obviously that was incorrect. She was as committed to the band as the rest were at that point.
This is the musical equivalent of a thoroughbred being required to walk everywhere. It can do it. It looks majestic doing it. But it's capable of so much more.
Loved your reaction.
I listen to several Japanese bands of different genres and in them there are a lot of bass players who want "freedom": "the bass guitar is just another guitar"... They all run away from the conventional role of the bass guitar as a (monotonous) base, but bring another melodic layer to the song, which further allows the lead guitar space to play a bit differently... they open up a new space for each other for a new role in the song...They are not slaves to the usual habits in music, they act like playful children...
Kanami pure genius.
🤘🤘🤘🤘
Great reaction yet again. You have the best musical ears on UA-cam. Thanks (UK).
Thank you! My ears are ok but they are far from the best😄
🕊👀❤🍻
The music and execution in EN is sophisticated and delightfully listenable. But the lyrics, and concepts they're based on, put it at the epic level. The songs already released earlier in the year are just Band-Maid awesomesauce! The six new songs are so tightly integrated and complex, it's going to take a Tokyo minute to assimilate. But I already love Forbidden Tale, and especially The One. 😉🤘 btw - We should all wish a "Good Luck" to Band-Maid's new self-run management company: Maidit, Co., LTD! Will they managing other bands, boost Cluppo and Maiko projects, or tour more internationally? Or maybe they will expand their business interest to other sectors of the music biz outside of Band-Maid. I believe Kanami wants to get more into composing, scoring and production. And as for Miku and Saiki, the sky's the limit for what they'll want to do in merch, fashion and art, etc.. Thx, Yo!
And thank you!
Was thinking about your channel the other day and was missing your insight. Then you come out with this banger of a video?! This is my favorite analysis video of yours so far. Thank you so much for this!
Thank you! Talk about good timing😄
Kanami is not underrated by me ... she is my ultimate composer. To my ear she composes complete orchestral arrangements and then figures out ways for the instruments available to play the parts of an orchestra ... when I listen close I can imagine a whole string or horn section playing the 'phrases' that Kanami is playing. And MISA and Akane seem to understand this and join in taking whole orchestral sections for themselves and pretending they are that whole section and doing counterpoint to Kanami's orchestral parts ... but they do this by knowing their instruments, equipment and production tools and somehow compressing that same 'orchestral feel' into 4 people with their instruments!
Well said🤘
Gotta love how the chord structure on that crescendo and even the last chorus gets changed up underneath the same melody. It reminds me of "Yours is No Disgrace" by Yes. The main motif gets reinvented as a swing jazz section halfway through.
I cut a part where I tried to label each portion of the song but I ended up tapping out because the parts kept progressing🤯
An epic reaction for an epic song! After I heard *_Forbidden Tale_* the second time I turned to my imaginary girlfriend, Misura (she's a combo of Misa/Band-Maid and Sakura/Le Sserafim) and said "this is a goddess-level epic genius masterpiece of genius epic masterpiece proportion!" ⋆.˚✮🎧✮˚.⋆The way it builds and twists and builds and coils and then is SO incredibly triumphant but STILL not done with you. She said to me "but that UA-cam guy Mota figured that out halfway through the first listen." ......... Ouch! Anyway, I don't watch many male reactors at all (sorry dude-bros) but you're S-Tier for sure. Thanks for all the little bits of humor you throw in, also. Like your acknowledgement to the cheering audience during the bass cover 🍻 (as an aside, for anyone curious, my bias-wreckers are Miku, Kanami, Akane and Saiki, not necessarily in that order, depending on where the moon is🌙) ---- ⚡🎀🎀🎀🎀🎀⚡🕊
Haha no worries, I’m glad you enjoyed!
Misa is known for her pick tuck/ slap move and her octave slides. And Whiskey.
It's those damn Onion Ninjas again! Happens to me all the time, and I'm a 69 year old white dude!
The BAND-MAID logo on the truss rod cover has sparked debate on whether this is her new signature PRS.
Very in depth analysis. I've noticed that they use English phrases when Japanese doesn't work, and vice-versa.
They mix them in quite well🤘
