2014 2.0 TDI CFFB Passat timing belt & water pump replacement
In this video I replace my timing belt and water pump on my 2014 Passat, it has the 2.0 TDI CFFB engine.
You would need the locking tools for your engine to do this, these can be picked up fairly cheaply, doing this job yourself can save you lots of money as most of the cost is labour, with filming this took me a day to do even my first time doing this job 5 years ago took me a day but i took it slow and ensured that I was happy with everything before running the engine.

    Hi Steve, very interesting video mate I really enjoyed watching you change the cam belt it seemed to go quite smoothly as some of those transverse engines can be a right pain to work on. I think the last cam belt I changed was on my old Volvo 740 and about 2 months after I changed it it decided to blow it's head gasket🤦‍♂I did it myself and it was quite easy all I had to do was take the head to my local garage to get the head skimmed, it went back together very easily as there is so much room under the bonnet, mine was a 4 cylinder but they also chuck a V6 in that car as well🙄thanks mate👍

    • @Cavalier_Steve
      @Cavalier_Steve 4 дні тому

      Hi John, these are challenging to say the least but doable, yeah transverse engines you typically need to take the engine mount off. That was annoying re you 740 but at least you could do the job yourself and get the head skimmed, there are so many modern engines where you can’t skim them anymore there tolerances are so tight now, to be fair though, I don’t think that HG failures as that common any more I think due to the warning lights along with the bings and bongs modern cars give. Cheers for the comment as always John I’m glad you found it interesting I think there was around 7-8 hours of footage in this one 😵Cheers mate.

      I wouldn't want to do anything like that on a modern engine as the manufactures like to use all these fancy bolts and tools that you need to do the work, they just like to make it harder than it needs to be to stop people like you and I from doing it at home so they can pull your pants down charging the earth getting it fixed at a dealers🙄🤔 My SLK doesn't have a cam belt but good old Merc use a timing chain on these engines which seems like a step backwards, but saying that it's supposed to last the life of the engine but what if it doesn't and lets go at 70 or 80K miles on the clock that could cost to much to fix making the car a write-off💰😂 I do like these kind of vids mate but I realise it's a lot of extra work having to film them then hours of editing work so thanks for doing this Steve👍

    Hi Steve I think the time lapse thing is a great thing many people do with their videos now, I'm going to maybe start doing it with mine as I tend to miss out recording the long bits, but that's what people want to see. I done a video the other day and absolutely everything went to shit lol I turned the camera off and just got on with it; some days are like that. Great work as usual on your cav, fiddly bit that corner, especially the bumper hanger bit that's a pain to try and get right unless you have a cut off or a template from another car, if you get it too proud or too far in the bumper doesn't sit/mount right. Good stuff anyway 👍

    • @Cavalier_Steve
      @Cavalier_Steve 27 днів тому

      Hi Andy, thank you, I like the time lapses as it still shows what your doing whilst keeping the viewer engaged, that's the idea anyway, that way when stuff goes wrong you can show those bits if you want to. It's so frustrating when things go wrong but sometimes those videos can be more entertaining and people can learn from those mistakes or see how you come up to get round the issue if it's something like a sheared bolt or something like that. Keep them coming though Andy, working on cars is very annoying sometimes especially when things don't goto plan. Thanks for your support as always though mate, yes your right about the bumper hanger that's why I really wanted to use the old one m as I know it's right, I think rhe next video working on this would be interesting though... cheers Andy. 🍻

       @Cavalier_Steve Hi Steve always only to happy to support your channel, your working on cavaliers so it's interesting to see how you approach more or less the same bits I've had to fix. Yeah I did tend to spend a lot of time editing out bits of my videos but I reckoned what's the point, need to include the warts n all! Sometimes they really go to crap though or I'm in a real rush and don't have the time to set up and think a bit more as you have to do when recording. Glad to see it's all progressing and look forward to catching up on your next videos :)

      Hello there, This seems to be a common issue with these, as per the video really is the fan kicking in ok? And how is the heat from back of the radiator? is the top radiator hose much hotter than the bottom radiator hose? Does your temperature light go out when you run you interior fan on full and temperatures to hot? This takes around 5 minutes for the light to go out. See how you get on with these and let me know how you get on.

    Tip: from someone who’s been in the game for 35 years you definitely want to use weld to spray on any plate that overlaps to form a seam, I use Upol Copper Weld To Spray some use Zinc but I find copper has the best anti corrosion properties, it’s not cheap but if you don’t spray up the surfaces it WILL rot through.

    Hi Steve, a very interesting video as always mate I really don't think you need to worry about how much content you are including as I think you have got the balance pretty much spot on, we need enough content so people that are learning from this need to know what and how you are doing it so I would keep it as it is👌 Repairing rust and fabricating new patch panels is a soul destroying endless task which is why a lot of people start their projects thinking it doesn't take long then end up getting disheartened and stops but both you and I knows it takes about 10 times longer than other people think it does, it's been many years since I was crawling under a car doing what you are here but you are doing a fantastic job mate👏👏👌👍

It’s good to hear everyone’s opinion and so far it’s really positive so I’m really happy with that, and hearing that I’m getting the balance right as well, especially this type of work and as you say it is soul destroying as you seem like your not getting any where fast, I’m really pleased that everyone is enjoying what I put up as the way I have been presenting these videos feels right to me. Like you say many people give up (me included at one stage) because it’s so frustrating not getting anything right! But this project seems to be going well, I think that’s because I haven’t put to much pressure on myself getting perfect. Expectations have a big part to play on how a project turns out. @JohnWD40TC02 thanks very much John!!! That means a lot to me mate! Unfortunately it’s even worse that that, you can’t weld new cars unless you have the high strength steel welding wire, a lot of panels are glued together using a special adhesive I think this stuff is mega expensive hence one of the reasons that modern cars get written off so quickly. I’m sorry to hear of you health issues, I hope it’s nothing to serious mate! All good with me just so busy of late! Cheers mate

Me recording these videos does encourage me to try and get it right in the end and also to carry on, as you say it encourages others to carry on as well, I’ve been there myself and have nearly given up on a project because of the frustrations of not getting it right. As you say as long as you make the repair strong again it really doesn’t matter what it looks like, as long as your car passes the NCT test then it doesn’t matter the car is on the road for another few years hopefully. Hello there, First of all you may need to get the car scanned for any codes, is the check engine light on? I will try and help the best I can, the ECU is likely using the cam position sensor when you unplug the crank sensor along with longer crank time when you do this, I’m assuming it’s still stalling with crank unplugged? I believe these engines run off a MAP sensor (Manifold Absolute Pressure) instead of an Air flow meter so maybe worth ensuring that this is clean it will be along the air intake manifold somewhere it could be this that’s giving the wrong information to the ECU but just a guess. When the engine idles is it idling normally? I’m no expert in these but at least there is some things for you to look at. Good luck. Let me know how you get on. Steve.

    Hi Steve, you are progressing well mate and there is nothing wrong with your fabrication work as the area you are working on is quite complex with lots of panels meeting together along with the odd shapes you need to make so don't doubt yourself Steve as it will end up stronger than it was when new, seam seal your joints to keep the wet and rust at bay👌 Looks like you have some new tools mate, that compressed air hole cutter is really handy to have for what you are doing as it saves a lot of drilling the holes for the plug welds and that metal stretcher is nice I didn't know you could get them that small so it's ideal for what you do👏👏thanks Steve👍

    • @Cavalier_Steve
      @Cavalier_Steve 2 місяці тому

      Thank you John, and thanks for the kind words, it looks a bit messy at the moment but i hope to get it all neat as and where i start to put more panels back on, I do have some tiger seal that I hope is still ok, if not I’m going to buy filler that is reinforced with fibre glass as that is supposed to be water proof. Yeah the shrinker stretcher I’ve had for a couple of years now is wanted to show in my videos that you can use other methods like cutting slots into and bending the curve in but i also wanted to use the tools i have to create a neater job. As with he air joggler these are quite expensive even the hand tool isn’t much cheaper they both do the same thing just the air powered one is obviously much easier to use this is quite new, interesting fact, a lot of people like to drill there holes as they like them to be a bit bigger than what this tool can produce, because they like them to be strong, I see there point but I think if you put enough plug hols in (this method is called plug welding) then they should be as strong as original if not stronger. Both the Shrinker/stretcher and the joggler are great pieces of kit but not absolutely necessary for a beginner. One day I would like to buy a swager AKA a bead roller I bet I could do some serious damage with that 😂 Im glad you enjoyed it mate, hopefully this section would start to come together and start looking like a rear end again. Thanks for the comment and support as always John, hopefully see you in the next one, if this flipping rain stops!! Cheers Mate.

      @Cavalier_Steve 3 місяці тому

      Morning Del, I hope we can find the fault for you, hmm there are a couple of things we can check, before we change parts, first off we can do two checks in one, if you unplug the crank sensor (plug should be on the top left near the oil filler cap if your filler is on the drivers side of the engine, then check all 4 of your spark plugs they should be dry do this test when your engine is cold, and turn it over as if your going to start it, you don’t want it to run or try and start, let the engine turn over for about 10 seconds, take note of how the engine turns over it should sound even then re-check your plugs if they are dry then you shouldn’t have a fuel leak from the injector, you could also take the air feed off the manifold and turn the ignition on whilst looking at the injector during the fuel prime stage do this a few times you shouldn’t have any fuel spray out at all but if you do you know the injector is leaking. Try this first and let me know how you get on. There shouldn’t be much to check as most of it you’ve done already 🙂 good luck. Steve.

    Hi Steve, thanks for the vid, (I have the same car) I had this fault a year ago and didn’t know what it was, took the car to garage and after plugging the car in told me it was the offside rear sensor, but they said the magnets in the wheel hub break down and had to change the hub, it cost me hundreds…. I have the fault again, started yesterday so I’m wiser now, I’ve just ordered a cheap OBD reader to find out which wheel, I’m hoping just a sensor will do the trick?

    • @Cavalier_Steve
      @Cavalier_Steve 3 місяці тому

      Your welcome, I'm pleased and hope that this will help you with your sensor, to be fair they are cheap enough and easy enough to replace even if its not the sensor, but from what I have read is these are a common replacement item any way, what your garage told you does have some truth, the B5 (Mk5) Passats used to have the the wheel hubs replaced this was due to rust around the reluctor ring used to make the ring come away from the hub and caused the failure, in that case yes you replace the wheel bearing hub, but i don't think our cars suffer with this issues. the OBD Readers are definitely worth the investment as they will pay for them selves in one job such as this, the phone on i have seems quite good and it benefits from using an app which gets updated as technology advances, but they are cheap and you won't be able to get every code or issue detected but they are great for us beginners. Good job so far Steve, you certainly put a lot of attention to detail in those repair panels, might learn a thing or too from that for my future workl lol. Welding thin steel to already thin steel that has likely got rust or weakness in it is never an easy task, especially upside down that makes it 10 times more difficult. I always try and fashion something to rest my arm on, or rest it against something so it's not shaking about when I'm welding, usually try and rest my head on something as well like a block of wood if you're lying on your side and trying to weld upside down.

    Hi Steve, I started watching this video yesterday but as usual I got called away and only just got back to it🙄anyway mate I think you did a superb job on repairing the rust, making the plates and welding them in, I know from experience that this is not an easy job and it's made even harder when you don't have the correct metalworking tools which cost a fortune🤦‍♂ I think your welding as damn good mate as it's difficult to weld such thin steel so your repairs as just as strong (or more so) than the original, when I done my old Cortina up (early 80's) all I had was a 90A ark (stick) welder and that is not much good for thin steel either, I now have a Esab Rebel mig, tig and ark welder which is a synergy type which adapts to your welding style changing the settings constantly, it doesn't get a lot of use these days which is a shame as it's a fully computerised welder just sitting there, I may sell it at some point🤔 Thanks Steve👍

I’m starting to like the challenge and f making the panels by hand feels nice and it’s back to basics with the benefits of anyone watching can follow along with basic tools as well. I’m enjoying it more now that the panels are coming out about right, I think doing the videos adds the extra pressure to turn out a good result. I’ve used cheap welders in the past along with a second hand one which was rubbish! It was a non turbo one (non fan cooled) you could do 2 welds and then the over temp light would come on. The Clark one I have, I’ve never seen the over temperature light on my current set, hopefully I would get flatter better welds the more I work. I’m glad you’re enjoying the videos though and I love reading the comments. @Cavalier_Steve 4 місяці тому

      Hi Senzom, it sounds like you're experiencing the same issue I had with mine, the slave cylinder could be leaking internally, this doesn't leak fluid out as you may expect and you probably won't get any fluid loss, I think the seal breaks down and causes the fluid to leak past the seal insted of pushing it out as the clutch peddle realises on the pressure plate spring to push the slave back this internally pushes the fluid back up the line and into the master cylinder and this is what returns the clutch peddle (I hope that makes sence) I also had black fluid especially when I took out the old slave cylinder, this could be the rubber that has broken down or more likely is that the break fluid is old and as it's hygroscopic it has the ability to absorb moisture and this moisture turns the fluid dark and eventually black. You could try bleeding the slave cylinder but it's highly likely that your slave or master has failed, if you are able to bleed fluid out of the slave cylinder then chances are your master cylinder is good. I hope this all makes sense foe you, if you have any further questions then please come back to me. All the best. Steve.

      @senzom4484 no worries, if I have read your reply right it sounds like you removed the pipe from the slave cylinder, you won’t bleed the cylinder this way (not completely anyway) I would put a bit of clear pipe on the bleed nipple you would be able to see the air bubbles. Any air in the system would compress it wont transfer the fluid properly. Usually you don’t get air in the system for no reason I still suspect your slave cylinder.

    Nicely done Steve you are a man of many talents as I really didn't think you had enough glue there for that mirror but it seems to have worked well👏if that was me doing the repair I would have probably used a blowtorch and a crowbar and ended up with 20 small mirrors 🤦‍♂🤠🤣

      Cheers John, I’m surprised that it didn’t shatter 😦 but it turned out well. I was not impressed with the glue! It was clearly starting to go off in a sealed packet, a new packet would have been the perfect amount to do this job though to be far. I do try and do most things myself it’s so much more satisfying than paying someone else to do it. I liked your director comment on one of your wings I had to get that one in on my bad filming 🤣😂🤣 Cheers mate hope all is well with you.

      Yeah I was watching that with my fingers crossed🤞😬you do a good job looking after your cars Steve I used to enjoy looking after my old Cortina's but these days it's hard work. I was going to say in my first comment that you must have used the same directors that I used for editing my videos, bunch of cowboys🤠🤣😉 I'm ok mate thanks just busy lately looking after Sonia, hope you are ok mate🙏👍

Thanks good mate sorry to hear that your so busy though but better at least you still find time to time to do your spraying 😃 All good here thanks just like you been busy and dodging the weather
