BMX Flatland: How to Whiplash (part 2)
Im building up the flatland specific utopia (kinked top tube) frame because i got a good deal but i regret not having rear brake mounts, currently working out a way to use a diacompe BR-990 mount and some brackets to get a rear brake. Gyro is figured out in theory, we'll see if it works when connected!
I would love to see that brake set up when you finish! that sounds so cool.
Sick little edit bro, thanks for the post up 🤙🏻 ride on man.
My 1.9 heresy tires felt fat, so I measured their width with a caliper. They are actually 2.05. Not sure if it's a quality control issue, but they are closer to 2.1 than 1.9. I do still love them, but I have issues with clearance running my Ares fork.
That makes so much sense. Ya, I like them but I'm gonna go back to a smaller width next time to solve the clearance issues.
Interesting man, I ride and loved my 1.75s they made best tire ever and wanted to change to the 1.9s but damn that seems fat and wider than I’d love cuz I turbine and spin a lot and don’t want it to hinder my style and riding much Still considering them but wonder if that’s how they are in general and hope they would fit my jungle rider frame I am going to as well.
I rode Ares 1.75 for 10 years. The switch to the fatter heresys made everything instantly more stable. I don't feel like it slowed my spins down. I'm going to try the eclat mugen 1.95 next. I expect it to be narrower than the heresy 1.9s. I think it was Jay Forde who put a caliper on the mugens and they were exactly the advertised width.
@@ostmosis the measurement you get depends on the width of the rim so it’s always a shot in the dark to that degree. I actually would consider this fork now knowing the clearance is tight because I hate that gap above the tire below the crown
@@Davedebuono huh. I never considered the rims, but it seems obvious now that you mention it 🤔
Yooo! It was good to see you there. Funny seeing this after I came up to you & recognized you from UA-cam. Lol! I'm L.A. (Nite Rider) from St.Louis. Hope you made it home safe. Until next time.... One Love! 💯✌🏾❤️
It was awesome to meet you, too! Thanks for taking initiative to come up to me. Whenever you are in San Diego, hit me up and lets ride and maybe make a video together. So glad you got to make it out to the One Love Jam!
@flatlandjourney - It was a great weekend. I'm definitely gonna plan a trip to S.D. so we can ride & make some Rad content. I'll be in touch. I've got my first contest in Vegas in April, so I'm trying to get all my beginner tricks dialed in. Lol! Talk soon. Keep posting these videos, they don't go unseen. Lol!
@@l.a.maclin6591 That's gonna be a blast getting to do a contest! Wish I could be there. And thanks for the encouragement man.
Hey bro, you and I met at the one love jam. I was on a black Haro Master and was wearing a Bass Pro shop hat with glasses and a gray pullover. I think you were with an Asian dude and his daughter. By any chance do you have his Instagram or something? I meant to get it but it slipped my mind
Hey whats up Danny! It was great meeting you there. Ya, the other guy is my buddy Clarence. I've got his phone number. Shoot me an email and I will give you his contact info. Kevin.Thorsell1@gmail.com
I'm thinking pretty hard about the Haro la bastille as an over 40 beginner now, since the price of the Colony Apprentice went up and currently the price is down on the Haro. Figure with the price difference I could upgrade the Haro(Gyro, front brake etc). Thoughts?
Ya, that is the way to go in my opinion. You will need to get an adapter for the front fork in order to run a front brake. I would email flatlandfuel and the owner, Patrick, will help you get set up with all the right parts.
I've heard lately that new riders don't use breaks much involving tricks. I don't know what breaks to use when doing different trick. Hope someone can explain
Ya, the trend right now is to go brakeless. But even the brakeless riders will tell you it is way easier to learn tricks with brakes. One great resource in learning the specifics of how how and when to use the brakes during tricks is an old video called "Ground Rules" by Matt Wilhelm. You can find it for free on Vimeo. I highly recommend it. The video is over an hour long and goes through tricks from beginner level to pro level.
19.75 Sunday park ranger is good so is the eastern repeater at an affordable price
That's awesome bro. The song that you're playing in the quick makes it even more so.
Thanks so much!
Me and my sons will be there! We are from Phoenix, AZ. 💪❤️💯
Awesome! Make sure to come say hi! Looking forward to seeing you there!
Hi, there what do you recommend for a complete flatland Bmx, im from Europe, im a begginer starting know so dont want something to expensive...im 50 years old 5,10 thanks
Hi there! first off, thanks for watching. One of my goals is to help people get the right bike for them. I have a few videos on my channel that may be helpful regarding making decisions about the right bike for your needs. Currently, there are a few flatland bikes on the market that I can recommend, from various price points. The nicest one currently is the We The People Sinus. However you mentioned you are on.a budget. One that is great quality but at a middle price point is called the Haro La Bastille. In the U.S. it is currently on sale at FlatlandFuel.com. I'm not sure if the shipping would be worth the discounted price. You should be able to to get this bike in Europe as well. One thing to note is that it is intended to be a "brakeless" bike, so it does not come with a front brake or gyro setup for the rear brake. So, it you don't want to go brakeless, you will need to purchase brake parts seperately, and that may be a deal breaker for you. This bike, even at its full price, is probably the best deal. Some other options that are lower quality are the Colony Apprentice. The nice thing about this is it comes fully set up with front and rear brakes. The downside is it is lower quality than the La Bastille, and on top of that it is more expensive. But it is a tried and true entry level flatland bike. Another bike that could be a good fit is called the Far East Cycles complete bike. It is a little on the small side, so at 5'10," it would feel a bit small. The benefit of this bike is it is super light compared to most of the other bikes. An alternate approach is to get a standard BMX bike and modify it slightly for flatland. This can be most easily done if you are planning to ride brakeless, since that is how most bmx bikes come. I hope that gets you going in the right direction. Feel free to reach out with more questions as they arise.
@ thanks for your answer my friend. Regards from Portugal 🇵🇹 Im more inclined for that old school felling gyro and brakes. What do you recommend size wise top tube length? 20 or 19,5?
@cf9978 Either size would work. But if you are thinking about doing exclusively flatland, then the 19.5 will probably be best.
Very helpful
Thanks for watching! I'm glad it was helpful. Would love to hear about how it is coming along as you practice:)
I added the Baseline freecoaster to my ‘16 Downtown DLX because of this vid. Thanks for the tip.
Great move. The downtown DLX comes almost completely ready for flatland riding. The freecoaster makes it fully ready for flatland.
Love it! you did an amazing job!
Thanks so much. This was a fun project. I hope to do more like it in the future.
Siiiiick channel bro! New Sub!
Thanks so much. I appreciate you taking the time to watch:) Would love to hear about your progression with tricks!
@ once I get my bike, I will definitely let you know!
This was a very helpful video. Thank you for making it. I've been out of the bike scene for 35 years. So many things have changed since I was riding. I just recently purchased an S&M Dagger on the Market place. I'm in the process of getting setup how I used to ride. I'm shocked on how many people do not use front breaks anymore.
The Dagger is an amazing frame! Nice choice. Ya, the trend right now is to go brakeless. But even the brakeless riders will tell you it is way easier to learn tricks with brakes. I ride front brakes. I'd love to see your bike once you have it finished. Tag me in a video.
The bars are visiting chicago
I had a DK flatland bike, it was really affordable for what it was. Had a big time on that thing.
I had one of those DK flatland bikes. It was called the Opsis. It was an incredible value and had everything that was needed.
Great breakdown. This one's on my list but the confidence level isn't there yet. I'm still 100% more comfortable rolling backwards versus forwards when I'm on the front wheel.
Ya this is a tough one. I think getting the Hang 5 and steamroller are good foundations for this trick.
Really enjoy these tutorials
Thanks for watching!
I have a bmx bike and it clicks and idk wat it is can u tell me
Can you upload a video of it. Maybe I can figure out what's going on with it.
You have a front brake grab it maybe that'll help
I absolutely love your channel. And just like the one commenter you said I'm 50 and I still enjoy riding. I've written everything. But now I have no desire to jump on, over on top of anything anymore. Lol. I've always had this passion for flatware. So that's where I'm at right now. I hope to still be doing it until I'm 60 plus lol
Back in the day we did it all on one bike. Think about the movie RAD They did everything on one bike racing included.
Try not to glide for too long on the karl kruzer as it usually tends to carve, throwing you to the side once you grab the wheel. Pop a karl kruzer for a second or two, then immediately put your other foot on the peg and quickly grab the back wheel
Thats really helpful. Ya I totally notice I start carving to the right automatically on the Karl cruiser. I appreciate the tips.
Great set up - any changes for 2025?
Ya, I've got a couple of potential changes I might make. I want to try a little bit longer frame. But overall I've liked this set up. What are you riding?
What's wrong with cassette hubs?
Cassettes can be great depending on what you want to use it for. For flatland BMX, there are a lot of tricks where it is helpful to have a freecoaster hub, which allows the back wheel to roll backwards, without making the cranks turn.
Love the channel. The bike looks great. Almost same color as what I have. It’s a Kink Whip XL in orange/black. I’m 6’2” and the TT is 21.5”. I look at where my knees are in relation to the bars and mentally subtracting an inch or two would put my knees against the bars. So whether it’s ideal for flatland or not, it’s a moot point.
Ya that makes sense. I think I've just adapted my riding for the shorter frame. Do you ride flatland as well?
@@flatlandjourney I was into flatland in the 80's. Took a 35 year break and bought the Kink a few months ago. Basically back to square one. I can barely pull a tailwhip so the stuff your doing seems impossible. Keep it up, man. Love the channel.
@ you will start to get it back little by little. I’m always impressed by the guys who rode back in the 80s and took a break and are now getting back into it. They tend to pick things up more easily because that muscle memory is still tucked away somewhere.
I would love to see commentary on flatland bikes or frames, I watch Bendy Tubes, he shows a lot of of the midschool frames, which I love
Ya shoutout to @Midschoolfool with Bendy Tubes. His videos are really interesting.
I'm getting back into flatland after around 8 years. I needed a video like this, thank you bro!
So stoked to hear you are getting back into it! Would love to see videos of your progress over time!
Omg 20.5 !!!! Need to proof read !!!!! I need one of those old guy phones with the huge buttons lol. Is 54 old ? Oh s%@@* i think i am getting old !😮
Ur way farther than myself in the bag of tricks forsure but, flatland is a luv of something that has alot of failure but, also achieving sum of the most awesome things we can do as flatland riders. It takes alot of time and discipline to achieve greatness. Keep up the the work and content. Looking forward to the next. I have a Majide with a 2.50 top tube and just over 13" chainstay . I'm also 6' 4 and it gives me room but also nimble enough. Flatland for life !!!
Omg the fat fingers!! 20.5!!!!!!
Ya your magi is about the same size as the frame I was riding previously. I did like it alot. Keep on riding!
Is this Tom Green?
haha, I used to get that back in the day. But it's been a while.
The Haro Lineage bikes are awesome!!! I built a 2021 Master and I’m going to buy the 2023 for $1000! That’s a great deal when you consider the rims bought separately are $600!!! The frame and fork is $600, so you’re basically getting the rest of the bike free!!!
That’s a great deal. I think they are great bikes too.
Maybe try a one handed x-up while goin into the time machine
Ya, I've seen some guys do that. It seems less stable, but I might give it a try. Thanks.
No wonder I had so much trouble as a kid trying to do flatland stuff on a jump bike…everything was working against me. Good video
Ya man, a smaller bike does make a big difference. But people can get used to riding almost anything. Flatland is really hard.
BigBear!!! used to camping up there when I was a kid...lived in SanDimas Ca.....ofc, now I live in germany...
Ya man Big Bear is beautiful. It's only a few hours away from where I live in San Diego. Wow, you moved to Germany? Thats a big move. How come you moved?
@@flatlandjourney Too many bodies. :)
another good thing is only $49 shipping to us for flatland fuel. And only Iowa is subject to sales tax.
@@uptowndann109 ya that’s really awesome deal.
So you’re talking about flatland and pointing out a crap bike ! Flatland back in the day was all about split top tube pegs and standing platforms built into bikes .. This bike has none of that
Thanks for checking out this video and offering your perspective. Those classic freestyle bikes from back in the day were really cool, so I totally get where you are coming from. In this video, I was focusing more on some current affordable options that could work to help people get into the sport or back into the sport at a reasonable price. Are you interested in getting a bike with a split top tube? I'd love to hear more of what you are into.
Dude I rode in the 80s and I ride now. Sure the 80s bikes had more style but modern bikes are way better to ride. We realized platforms and extra tubes are just dead weight.
I have a custom 2021 GT Pro Performer. Love the 80's look, but only Haro and GT have made heritage bikes. Modern flatland is performed on any BMX.
Always love when you post! I’m just starting to get into flatland and really appreciate the info you share. Stoked to see your progress…Stay Rad!!!
Thanks for the encouragement, I appreciate it! Would love to see what you are working on!
I just started riding Flatland 7 months ago & my 1st bike was The LaBastille. I knew nothing about bikes when I bought it, only got it because of the color. Lol!🤦🏾 It turned out to still be a great bike... BUT!!!! I had to basically hybrid build it by adding a 1. Gyro 2. Front Break 3. New Fork (With Break Mounts) 4. Seat Post - The seat that came with it was a half inch above the tire. 👎🏾 5. Pegs - The ones that came with it are strictly for street rail grinding & heavy AF!!!! 6. New Tires. - The tires that came with it were so fat they wouldn'tfit through the new fork with the front break. So I dropped down to (2.5) Even those are a little big, but definitely work (100psi) If I knew then, what I know now, I would have just bought the Groundmaster, which I still ended up buying anyway, 2 months after The LaBastille. They're brother & sister. Lol! Dope Whips! L.A. (aka) Nite Rider STL 4130 Flatland Crew 🚴🏾
Ya, that makes sense with the La Bastille. If I were to get it, I would probably just use it as a completely brakeless bike, and put some grip tape on the pegs, then call it a day haha. Once brakes come into play, it opens up a whole chain reaction of upgrades that need to be done haha. I've experienced that first hand as well.
i know whats wrong! you need a 88 haro freestyler to do that trick LOL jk. anything balancing on front pegs i go right down like a sac of rocks lol as an automostive custom painter you killed it. powder is lame. looks like shit to me. bmxers are the only ones that think powder is the god of finishes im not sure why? most dont even ride hard. i paint everything only the forks get rashed if u ride hard and theyd get rashed if it wa powder so why cut your nose off to spite your face? URETHANE FTW
Thanks man! Ya, I do love the finish I can get with paint. Plus, I don't have the gear to powder coat and would lose the joy of doing it myself if I had to take it to a shop. I would love a Haro Freestyler! The reissue looks great, but not affordable.
Thanks.
[PRO TIP] : You'll need a front brake caliper like the odyssey bulldog so you can spin the front bars though the bottom of the fork if you don't have a fork with double mounts on the bike for center pull caliper from the start. (Regular front rim caliper won't work. 👍
That's right. I think Dia Comp makes the bulldog and Odyssey makes the 1999, I've never personally used either of them, but I think both should work with a fork that lacks 990 mounts. There is also a Dia Comp 990 adapter that can be added to a fork that has no mounts.
It's getting huge in Japan. Carry the torch for us Japan until we catch up!
We will keep trying to grow the sport here. I would love to ride in Japan sometime.
Love the journey bro!! Keep it up Super stoked for you and proud of ya. 💪🏼💪🏼👊🏼
Thanks man, I appreciate the encouragement! I like seeing your videos!
@ anytime man. Also thank you too! Means a lot to me. 💪🏼💪🏼🙌🏼
don’t give up, you’ll get it💪🏾💯 I used to roll the tire and grab the seat before I set the back wheel down, foot to the top tube🤙🏾
Thanks man. I have been playng around with a few different techniques. Rolling the tire and grabbing the seat is one of those and it seems to be a little more controlled.
Tuck your legs up more and getting the whole way round avoiding the front tire. Just gotta commit to it.youll get it dude.
❤
Man this is EXACTLY what I’ve been trying to find! Got into bmx at 34 and couldn’t find anyone that showed these fundamentals. Thanks dude!
I'm glad it's helpful. I was in the same place as you, couldn't find many videos that broke down the learning process of the tricks enough, so I started making them.
