The Barmen Beer Reviews
United Kingdom
Приєднався 21 тра 2019
The Barmen channel reviews beers from all around the world. We review draught beers, bottle beers and cans. We also brew some beers ourselves for review, as well as sharing brewing tips. This channel is based in the UK, so any pricing information is based in the UK. We release our videos as a beer review podcast as well and keep you up to date with all the latest news coming from the beer industry as well as your favourite breweries. Two videos/podcasts per week that feature a different beer each episode. With a leaning towards the humorous side with interesting anecdotes and stories.
Paolozzi Helles Lager Review
Today we have a beer in a gawdy coloured can. These type of beers I usually try to avoid, as they are usually over priced and over hopped. So, will this beer be the usual stereo-type that I help to promote or will I be proved wrong!

Greene King Ice Breaker Pale Ale Review
Ha ha prob not for me this , not drank a glass of wine for over 30 years😂..but I watched it to the end for the comedy moments. Santa's sack😂 cheers Graeme
@@SlurpyDave254 😂 Thanks Dave. I actually drank that whole pot in less than an hour, it went down a treat. The cider one is still to come, you might enjoy that as a tipple. In fact, just for you I will do a mulled ale. Cheers Dave 👍🏻🍻🙂
@@thebarmenreviews mulled cider be fine but mulled ale, I'd be all over that one👍🍺👏👏
Mulled wine pleasant enough. Most supermarkets have a decent port on offer round xmas time too, better winter warmer than xmas beers imo.
@@JoeyMills-y3v Yeah, most supermarkets have better options then the Christmas ales. You can even buy ready made mulled wine. Although it is more fun to make it yourself, as you can see I was having a great time! Cheers 🍻🙂
Looked like it needed some Citra hops in there too 😂only kidding! I was talking to my brother yesterday about mulled wine, I'll send him the video 👍
@@benbinks2012 Yeah, some Citra would give it a bit of zing. It is actually fun to make and the less is more strategy is always the best. Hopefully this video might help out your brother. The one I made didn't even last an hour after I stopped filming. I need to make some more next week! Cheers Ben 🍻🙂
Good god that glass is a mouthwash😂 not seen a decent pint at an airport for years so I don't usually bother..'Get that Carling Down ya lads'🥴🥴 it is funny to watch. Glad this turned out well though, prob deserved a 7/10 coz it a 500ml can how it should be..Nice one Graeme👍
Yeah, what a stupid glass to have. More people drink beer than any other type of alcoholic drink! Yeah, all those people living the highlife on pints of piss-water, the airport is great for people watching. Yeah, it could have been a 7, but I don't want people to think I'm too nice! 😂 Cheers Dave 👍🏻🍻🙂
@thebarmenreviews never let your guard down Graeme😂👍
I find the guinness nitrosurge gadget works VERY well with hawkstone black. It's a game changer.
Yeah, it probably would, especially with Black not having a widget. Although, I prefer the taste of Black to Guinness, more flavour. Cheers 🍻🙂
I'm just drinking one. Not bad.
Yeah, it's quite a nice beer, but not favoured by Czech drinkers. It also doesn't have the bitter edge that traditional Czech Pilsners and lagers are famous for. Better than UK macro lagers, that's for sure. Cheers 🍻🙂
@thebarmenreviews Thank you. Cheers 🍻
Ooooh a nitro stout with a bit of flavour, rare. All Guinness is brewed to 7.5% then diluted to appropriate types of brews. But the Draught Guinness is boiled to death( pasteurised) then the kegs filled up with nitrogen..Then it's poured through a nitro/Co2 mix therefore takes on double nitro. The Carling of Stouts I call it😂. Surprised but glad in a way this Hawkstone is different from the rest..cheeers Graeme 👍
It does taste closer to a more traditional stout and doesn't have the crappy texture of the other ones. I will do a comparison with the usual suspects. But I am one down already, as most shops have stopped selling Forged stout. This is because Connor McGregor was found guilty of being a sexual deviant. What a world! Cheers Dave 👍🏻🍻🙂
I had this the other day out of a bottle, no head, no carbonation, it was absolutely disgusting. The ingredients include glucose syrup, sugar and aromatic caramel none of which have any place in a decent beer so it's no wonder it's sweet but a cheap sugary sweetness rather than a quality malty sweetness. It really doesn't deserve to be called beer.
Yeah, this beer is made in about 5 different countries around Europe and I think it is a different recipe in everyone. There was no glucose syrup or aromatic caramel in the ingredients in this version. But if Carlsberg is involved, anything is possible. That's why I didn't refer to it as a Belgian Dubbel, as it has nothing really to do with the original. But mine had a nice head, normal carbonation and a controlled sweetness. It just shows us how beers can differ and are certainly not equal. I agree with you, I am all for natural products used with no adjuncts or added sugar. Beer is good enough with traditional grains, malts, hops and yeast. Cheers 🍻🙂
Sounds good tbh🖤
Yeah, it's just nice easy drinking Eastern European style beer. Underrated as a type of beer. Cheers 🍻🙂
That lingering bitterness IS wild there are definitely some nice aspects to the beer but wow puckering or what
Yeah, it does have a bit of a hoppy kick. Not my favourite type of beer normally. Cheers 🍻🙂
First tasted in Drumnadrochit, Scotland. Love it!
Yeah, that brewery has now shut. Their beer is now made by the Grampian Brewery in Aviemore. Their beer wasn't bad. Cheers 🍻🙂
Where do we start, good news it's looks great in the glass. Shame it's not a stout and 330ml bottle is a no no for me unless it's over 7%😂. Got to say Graeme your Beer knowledge is excellent which puts many others reviewers to shame. I much prefer a decent dark lager than UK lagers and crappy hoppy crafty beers, cheers👍🍺
I agree with you, a 330ml bottle annoys me. It did look nice and I can enjoy a dark lager easier than a light one. But unfortunately this just isn't a stout. My knowledge is down to this channel and research because of this channel. It's been a good learning curve for me. Your knowledge is up there with the best and of course your experience of beers long since lost. Which must be the saddest part. Cheers Dave 👍🏻🍻🙂
@thebarmenreviews the Marstons dropping 8 of their cask range doesn't bother me too much cos they're are mainly beers from shut down breweries ( jennings/ringwood) and are shadows of them former selves. The one that I'm sad to see go is Banks Mild. Brewed for 150 years, same place, never altered. A genuine light mild. But hey let's all drink alcoholic fruit juices🍺😀
I am with you on that one. The Bank's Mild is a nice beer. Sad to see that go, the rest were there in name only, they had really already left. But what should we expect from Carlsberg, they can make fruity alcopops that have never even seen fruit. But it's also another reason for pubs to stop using casks ale and go down the keg route. Which is the saddest thing.
Never been a fan of darker German beers. Or dark lager in general tbh.
I don't mind them, they are OK. I would prefer a stout, especially if I have bought the product as a stout. So, this is a disappointment to us both! Cheers 🍻🙂
@thebarmenreviews their purity laws don't mean much either when you look at them closely. One thing I will give them is the quality of their macro beers is very good. Like Lowenbrau, huge brand owned by a multinational but still a great beer imo.
Their big breweries are better than ours, that's for sure. The German macro beers are enjoyable, I can't say that about the UK equivalents. Cheers 🍻🙂
🥱 🥱 🥱 Jeez…….
So glad you enjoyed the video. Cheers 🙂
🥱🥱🥱🥱🥱🥱
So glad you enjoyed the video. Cheers 🙂
Blimey did well to get a 4/10..not a nitro stout fan..its dead beer ( pasteurised to the max) then brought back to life with nitro/ co2. Like Guinness, absolute crap👊👊
Yeah, I was being generous as it is just tasteless crap. But it is popular with younger drinkers, especially young women. Although what they class as a woman nowadays is a complete mystery to me and one I certainly don't want to explore! Crazy that a stout made in Scotland is touted as an Irish Stout with no real flavour of stout! What a mess this industry has become. Cheers Dave 👍🏻🍻🙂
Murphy's by Heineken, Grimbergen by Carlsberg, what the hell is next from Lithuania? 🤔😂 Keep em coming G, good or bad it's always a pleasure to listen to you ranting 👍
Yeah, the beer industry is a bloody mess and not just in our country. I try not to rant, but it is becoming a struggle. A lot of videos I don't actually release, as I end up in a rant and don't want everyone to have to suffer it. Cheers Ben 🍻🙂
Cheers for the review👌i used to drink Murphys Irish stout on draught many years ago it was a nice stout beamish was ok too brewed in ireland but not seen it again uk...now its all messed up the beer industry big players taken over ruined beers😮what you think is brewed in italy, france, spain is actually brewed in the UK and not good either.🙄😠keep up the cheery reviews👍👍❤️🇬🇧 Ps brewdog dark stout was not 😊a bad beer from Tesco and under £2👍
Yeah, the beer industry is a mess now and it seems to be everywhere and not just the UK. You should try the Forged stout from Asda. It has a bit more flavour than the Black Heart from BrewDog. Cheers 🍻🙂
Thank you
Cheers 🍻🙂
The 2 beers ive had from these tasted nice enough but both too gassy for me..with u on the minority, majority thing but not when it comes to mass produced beer/lagers😂. Cheers Graeme🍺
Yeah, this one went a bit wrong at the backend. The other beers that I have tried have been fine. Yeah, definitely a bit gassy for me too! Yeah, not a fan of the macro Lagers at all, but they certainly have the majority. Better than pine needle tea I suppose! Cheers Dave 👍🏻🍻🙂
A wee bit disappointing this one . I do enjoy their Trade Winds, Black Gold and Santas Sledgehammer - but I’ll give this a miss .
Yeah, the first half of this beer was very nice, but the backend was all wrong in my opinion. I have found their other beers to be fine. Maybe this was an experimental beer. Cheers 🍻🙂
The most important thing to me about lager is the price the alcohol content then the taste.
Well, the price should keep you happy, the ABV is nothing to write home about and the flavour isn't bad. So, this lager does tick a few boxes, that might make it worth a try for you. Cheers 🍻🙂
Yep...id be happy enough slurping that instead of box standard lagers n pilsners👍nice one Graeme
Yeah, so would I, better than all those cheap lagers from Aldi. Although my choices did start to go downhill later on, as I wasn't paying attention in the shop. So, you can watch me squirm with some of them!🫤 Cheers Dave 👍🏻🍻🙂
Cheers for the review👌👍sounds like a tasty beer!..good abv☺️
@@FighterPilot1945 Yeah, I was surprised that a Belgian beer brewed under license in so many different countries actually tasted nice. For the price, it's a nice beer and good value. Cheers 🍻🙂
Clean and clear light golden body, white head that soon turns into a wisp and collar. Hedgerow, skunky aroma with some lemon accents. Watered down Old Golden Hen really, but fairly hop bitter.
👍🏻🍻🙂
Had one of these in a tasting set from a German beer channel. I did not have the impression of having a "Beer". The chocolate taste was so strong, I thought I am having simply a chocolate drink for children... NOthing against chocolate stouts. There are good once on the market. But this one was over the top.
Chocolate stouts aren't really a real beer type. A lot of these types of beers are created to stand out from traditional aged or vintage ales. It is more of an alternative to a rich Imperial Stout. The problem with chocolate stouts is that it has adjuncts in it that makes the taste false and manufactured. The flavour isn't natural from the grains and malts. I don't like beers that are full of adjuncts. Cheers 🍻🙂
Yeah, I had a few Lagers in Scotland. Except for one, it was a disappointment. This one I did miss, but I see, nothing lost... To be honest, when coming to Scotland or any other part of the UK, I am not keen to have Lager (or Pilsner). I can get plenty of them in Germany and Poland. The British Islands as a whole are known for good Ales and Stouts. This is what I am looking for when coming to your part of the world as we here usually miss such kind of beers. Greetings from Poland.
Throughout the UK the most popular beer drunk is Macro Lagers by a large margin. Unfortunately these lagers aren't made in a traditional sense like German or Czech Pilsners, these are Frankenstein beers. Mosts of these lagers are made from a high alcohol base beer that is diluted down to the required ABV and false flavours added to make the different brands. In the UK we drink more lager than ales, but the lagers are just crap. Better to enjoy the ales and avoid the lagers. Cheers 🍻🙂
I think I saw this beer once in a Polish supermarket. I regret I did not buy it back then.
It's an OK beer at best. There are better stouts available in the UK, none of course from Ireland as they are tasteless crap. This brewery does make some good beers though, but this isn't one of their best. Cheers 🍻🙂
Had one of these on my West Highland Way hike last year. Liked it very much.
I found it OK, a bit over carbonated and lacking a bit of body. There are far better English Amber Ales to enjoy than this offering from the homeland. But, if you enjoyed it, then that's all that really matters. Cheers 🍻🙂
@@thebarmenreviews Hello. Thx for your answer. I guess I am influenced by European beers from Germany and Poland, so I expect beers / ales to be highly carbonated. After a few miles on the trail, the beer probably doesn't need to have a lot of body, in such a case it is good to be refreshing ;-)
What is that time in the Dancing Can Guinness Nitrosurge advert, please ? Heard it before but it's a while back; was it used as theme to a World Cup ? Thanks.
Is this what you are looking for? ua-cam.com/video/p88U83F7reY/v-deo.htmlsi=cNX4YTheCopZx83y
@thebarmansviews, Yes, but I want to know the name of the tune. Thanks.
Quality brown ale.
Yeah, it is a nice brown ale that should be available up and down the country. Sadly that isn't the case at the moment. Cheers 🍻🙂
Thanks for the review 👍A nice tasty brown ale!..very difficult beer to find!..I only found it in morrisons.
Yeah, it's a nice beer. It isn't available in Scotland and I couldn't even buy it in Penrith. If you got it in Morrisons, then you are the lucky one. Cheers 🍻🙂
Yup have enjoyed this in the past . Not seen it for years up in Scotland.
Yeah, it's crazy that this beer isn't available in Scotland. Hell, I couldn't even get it in Penrith. The world is just beyond understanding! Cheers 🍻🙂
I wonder if Papa Lega is still watching? I remember he always commented on this one.
Yeah, he also used to get off his head on it and leave spicy comments! I doubt he watches, as I believe he thinks I'm a prick, which is fairly accurate! 😂
@@thebarmenreviews 😂
Its one of the very few beers i buy in a clear bottle..never seems to affect it..its a very good well rounded Brown Ale. Showing my age but i remember drinking this & Samson on cask when brewed originally by Vaux..excellent Brown Ale, cheers Graeme 🍺👍
Yeah, the clear bottles usually affect the lighter more hoppy beers. But I still don't understand why they use clear bottles nowadays! Yeah, it's a nice beer and just a shame you can't pick them up at every supermarket. I would rather have this than that charlatan McEwen's Export, that piss is brewed in Wolverhampton! Cheers Dave. 👍🏻🍻🙂
It's good old fashioned working man's neck oil, goes down a treat both ice cold in summer or warm in winter. In fact it's unique that way imo, can't think of another ale you can say the same of. You know your ales mate, can you think of one? There's a few I can think of are nice warm & with a bit of a chill, but not ice cold like this. Thoughts?
@thebarmenreviews the clear bottle thing has a complex history. Like, when Newcastle brown was 1st made the bottling plant was the biggest part of the project, it was very modern & hygienic. The idea was to provide workers with a fresh, reliable beer at reasonable cost, that could not be adulterated or badly kept, like cask ale could. The clear bottles meant customers could see the product & knew it wasn't cloudy or had foreign objects in. The beer was intended for local distribution only so shorter shelf life wasn't an issue & most customers didn't mind the skunk smell. In fact they tried using brown bottles in the 70s or 80s after it got more popular, to extend shelf life, but customers complained so they changed back to clear. The beer itself was a blended ale, an old strong dark ale mixed with a weaker pale ale. The pale ale was even sold separately under it's own name but I forget what it was.
@@JoeyMills-y3v I know that Old Session Hen is good chilled and Old Speckled Hen is not too bad. Fuller's Bengal Lancers is nice chilled, but it does lose a bit of the hops, which isn't a bad thing. It depends on the malt used, some malts can stand up when chilled and others start to lose flavour. Hops always lose their edge under chilling. Cheers 🍻🙂
@@JoeyMills-y3v Yeah, the original NBA was a nice blended beer, but those days are gone. It is now brewed as a single brown ale with no character or real flavour anymore. You used to get Newcastle Light Pale Ale from the Newcastle Breweries. I understand the reason for the clear bottles in the past to reinforce quality with the drinkers, but nowadays it isn't needed. I would rather have a better beer in a brown bottle than a traditional looking beer in a clear bottle that isn't as good. Cheers 🍻🙂
Just a bottle of the Fullers Porter and that was very passable.
The Fuller's Porter isn't a bad beer, but just isn't as good as it used to be in the bottle. But most Fuller's products have dropped in quality in the bottle form recently. But the porter is better than a lot of other offerings found in the supermarkets. Cheers 🍻🙂
Fine Beer with fruit Orchard flavours. I taste that Bubble gum brewing in Harvey's Bitter on Cask well. Cheers
Yeah, it's a nice beer. 🍻🙂
Man loves the camera but tge camera thinks he goes on a bit
🙂I'm so glad you enjoyed it.
Well that wasn't a grand finale for the Porto beers😂..can't win them all mate🍺
Yeah, it was the worst tasting beer and it sprayed bloody everywhere! We can't win them all I suppose! Hopefully the reviews in the Baltics will be better! Cheers Dave 👍🏻🍻🙂
@thebarmenreviews have a top trip Graeme👍🍺🍺
Light, golden and white head. Malt, grain, notes of bread and bread crust, biscuits. In the background grain and wet hay. Saturation in the lower regions, faint bitterness. Very drinkable.
👍🏻🍻🙂
Bathgate - lol ya tube indeed . Got a PD but going to try source one of these 5l keg dispensers. Handy as a few mini kegs floating about locally.
Yeah, I know. I was reviewing it back when I was editing it and thought to myself, what a twat. I never really fancied the PD as they tend to go for more mainstream or popular brands. After they started selling Tennent's, that confirmed my decision. You can pick these up from £70 to £150 especially on eBay. I like being able to get more local and smaller breweries' beer in the kegs. 🍻🙂
I had a few pints of this in the cracking White Lion in Bristol ( pub with the dodgy stairs). It was a decent malty bitter if I remember. I like the old docks of Bristol and a few back street pubs but I know what u mean about the place. Bath down the road was good.. 7/10 about right...Butcombe now owned by the Liberation Brewinh Co of Jersey..cheers Graeme👍
@@SlurpyDave254 Yeah, it is a nice malt forward beer that is another win for the mini keg version. If I had the choice of Bristol or Bath I would choose Bath for a pub crawl. But a pint always tastes better in a good atmosphere and a good workingman's pub is my preferred choice. Owned by a Jersey drinks company, this world just keeps getting stranger, but at least the beer has been affected so far! Cheers Dave 👍🏻🍻🙂
Another Fullers to swerve then. You mentioned the smell early in the review, you could always try and pull your finger; that always seems to produce a smell. And in other news, just found out there’s an Adnams shop ten minutes from your sisters 👍
😂 That's my go to substitute if I can't get an aroma from the beer! I honestly don't know where this reputation of flatulence has come from! 🫤 I know there is one in Stamford, I take it you will be visiting? 🍻🙂
@ yes I will call in for some essential supplies…also, Stamford is a good place for a pub crawl. Just saying 😬
Is that an invitation?
@ absolutely 🍺🍺🍺
😲🫣
Drinking one right now. I rather like it, and for a 3.4% its surprisingly tasty. Lightly sweet front end, slight bitter finish. Mildly fruity. I went for a robust pour to dislodge some carbonation. (Belch)
Yeah, it was a surprising one for me to be honest. But a nice surprise for once. It is a very nice and refreshing beer, a bit over carbonated. But a far better option than crappy macro lagers. Cheers 🍻🙂
Gettimg worried about Fullers, they're selling their souls. My mate found a couple of decent dark ales in Estonia so there's a chance, enjoy ya trip Graeme😊
They've been inconsistent for a while now.
Yeah, Fuller's has already sold their sold to a degree. Their beers are just slowly getting worse and bit by bit getting progressively worse. I think they are slowly changing their recipes gradually in the hope that people don't notice the change. I will look out and see what's available over there and I might get some reviews done. Cheers Dave 👍🏻🍻🙂
Yeah, the quality is all over the place. Although I do think they are gradually changing the recipes in hope that it isn't detected. 🍻🙂
Drinking a Griffin right now. Its a bit like licking sap from a tree....
Yeah, it's a dreadful beer. I honestly don't know what has gone wrong with Fuller's, but it has happened in a big way. 🍻🙂
You've confirmed my suspicions about the Red Fox. I'd have bought some to try if there had been some of the 1845 and Bengal Lancer available, but there wasn't, so I unfortunately gave it a miss. That pint of Red Fox you had there looked a bit weak, similar to the last few beers from them that you’ve reviewed.
Yeah, it was lacking flavour and body, very disappointing. You won a watch by not buying it. Better to wait and just buy Bengal Lancer. Cheers 🍻🙂
Congratulations on your jizz delivery! Oh, JIS, I geddit now.
Well this is disappointing, tbought it was going to be decent. I thought it might be like the Wee Jock from Broughton which is nice. The 60 shilling in scotland is dead, the breweries will be happy when 70/80 shilling have disappeared and full of golden, ipa's etc like u say..long live the darker beers👊👊
Yeah, it was disappointing. I was hoping for so much more. I think we can safely say that classic sessionable heavy is for the moment dead in Scotland. Unfortunately IPAs are very much alive. What a waste of ingredients. Cheers Dave 👍🏻🍻🙂
Any ‘heavies’ that you tried recently that is ok bud ? I’m struggling to find any ( prob have been for the past 20+ years to be honest )
@@treforwalker7152 Unfortunately, the easy answer to that is no. Arran Dark Ale and Wee Jock on cask are nice, but not session beers. I honestly can't find a good sessionable classic heavy. I've been looking for as long as you by the sound of it. It is criminal with all these new breweries in Scotland constantly releasing IPAs and Pale Ales, but not one can make a decent classic sessionable heavy. Sorry I can't help, but if I find one, I will let you know. Cheers 🍻🙂
