Knit, Crochet, Craft with me - Ep. 01 | Having a mental health day
Переглядів 4014 годин тому
Sometimes life gets more stressful than you can cope with, and you need to take a step back and have a mental health day. Or just a mental health moment. For me, things have been very stressful lately with a move I did not foresee coming, as I had been promised a long time ago to buy the house I've rented and lived in for the past 11 years. But suddenly the contract was cancelled because a fami...

Remaking a Favorite Jersey Dress | Sewing for a large body

It doesn't happen often, but once in a while a favorite garment is found even in the off the rack-stores. They tend to be much loved, as my old jersey dress, that I have had for a couple of decades now. It is actually a maternity dress, all though it only has slightly more fabric in the front to accommodate for a growing belly. But since I've always been curvy and now have a bigger belly than e...

Knitting an Autumn Leaves Hat | Making a wardrobe to love - for a larger body

I saw this t-shirt a while ago, and instantly knew I had to have one of those. Not for the fit in the body, which I generally can't have. I have the shape of a barrel these days, and a tight t-shirt will inevitably roll or ride up, which is neither comfortable or looks good. No, I wanted it for the SLEEVES. I've watched quite a few people dye yarn and you are the only one who doesn't flip the yarn to put color on both sides. In this case, it looks like the yellow goes most of the way through but the green is only on top. How does that work out when working the yarn? Isn't the green uneven? Hahaha! And then as I'm typing this you go and flip the yarn, this is the first time I've seen you flip it. So what makes you flip some yarn and not flip others?

    • @anilovecreations
      @anilovecreations Місяць тому

      Haha! I sometimes flip it and sometimes don't, and it all just depends on what kind of effect/result I'm looking for. If I have a full pan of skeins and want to make sure there is color covering EVERYTHING I will always flip it, but if I want maybe just mostly speckles i.e. I might just twist the skeins slightly before putting them in the pan and just sprinkle dye on the top side. Since the yarn is then twisted, there will be speckles all around. So, it is simply a matter of what type of effect/result I'm looking for. 🙂

    Do you find only sprinkling one side of the yarn causes the hank to only have the color on one side? Most people I see dyeing flip the yarn over. With sprinkles you just wait till the one side has set before putting sprinkles on the other side.

    • @anilovecreations
      @anilovecreations Місяць тому

      You can use different techniques in order to get the amount of sprinkles you want spread evenly on the skein. You can flip the yarn, and you can also twist it slightly before putting it in the pan. I haven't really had any issues where I would get speckles only on one side, usually the strands in the skein aren't consistently stacked in a way that makes that happen. I find it more a matter of how much speckles you want, and if you want a skein that is really heavily speckled I would absolutely flip it too.

    Looks beautiful, did it turn out cheaper to make then to buy it already as a dress?

    • @anilovecreations
      @anilovecreations 2 місяці тому

      Well, that depends how you see it. Buying a shirred dress off the rack from one of the chains that sell what we would call "affordable clothes" would absolutely be cheaper if you add in the hours it took to make the one I made (and we all know why off the rack clothes can be so cheap...the people sewing them aren't getting paid what they ought to be). But this dress is custom made for my body, and to buy a custom made dress from a professional seamstress or tailor (who gets paid what they should for their time and skills) would be MUCH more expensive. I mostly can not find clothes off the rack that fits the body I inhabit today in a proper way, because the fashion industry is not built on the principle of there being clothes that fits everyone. It is built on the opposite - that we need to fit what is made. Which is the whole reason I started doing this. I aim to inspire others to not be afraid to try to make clothes for themselves, that are custom made for their bodies, because there are so many of us struggling to find clothes that actually fit well and are comfortable to wear. And because the fashion industry really needs to change, but let's not open that can of worms today. In short: Yes, you can find a shirred dress for cheaper. But no, you can not find a shirred dress custom made for your body that cost this little to make. 🙂

      @@josparadiseofcolor I realize I was going off on a bit of rant before - sorry about that! It was not directed at you, I'm just very frustrated with the fashion industry as a whole. I have the exact same issue. Small bust, big everything else, and on top of that I'm short. Finding clothes that fit right off the rack is mostly impossible for me. I would absolutely recommend making your own clothes, because it is such a relief to have clothes that fit well and that you feel comfortable in. It's a game changer, you feel like a whole new person. As for cost, it would of course depend on the price of the fabric, and whether or not you want to calculate the cost of the time it takes you to make it. What I do is I have a list of things I want to make, and then I shop for fabrics for future projects when there are discounts to keep the cost down. I also buy second hand and I have recently started to look into buying leftover stocks online (I'll probably make a video about that in the future). That means I sometimes buy fabric for projects that won't be started for another year or more, but when I do start it, I already have the fabric at hand. Same thing for yarns, if I'm planning on buying yarn for a specific project.

    • @anilovecreations
      @anilovecreations 2 місяці тому

      @@josparadiseofcolor Then my dress is absolutely cheaper, if we only take the fabric, thread and shirring elastic into account. • @anilovecreations
      @anilovecreations 2 місяці тому

      I haven't, but you could absolutely do that too. I suspect one would have to be a little more careful when applying the dye, and just adding it slowly to the yarn so that the yarn has time to soak it all up in the places you want it to be, and not run into the sections where you don't want it. I might try this in the future. 🙂

    ?? Just curious, as I am very new to dyeing yarn, but when you scatter citric acid in the pan and then lay your wet yarn in top of it, won’t that get soaked into the yarn and that area take up more dye?

    • @anilovecreations
      @anilovecreations 2 місяці тому

      No, the citric acid dissolves pretty much immediately, so I have never had any issues with that. 🙂

    Your shawl is absolutely lovely. I am a big fan of yellow. And the dress is a learning process - I personally hate sewing knit fabric . You can get some of that tubular knitted fabric that is used for cuffs and collars. That will pull the neck in a bit for you and make it lie flatter for you. Love your work !

    It looks really cute on you. The only thing I’d change is to topstitch the pockets in place so they don’t add extra bulk at the hip. And maybe shorten the sleeves. The current length accentuates the width at hips but shorter would accentuate your narrow waist. If you want to redo the neckline, just carefully trim it off. That .5 cm won’t make much difference if you are adding a wider binding anyway. Then snug up the binding. Jalie patterns has an excellent method for neckline bindings and you don’t have to buy the pattern to see the instructions. Well done! I love the shawl too! The bright yellow is yummy ❤❤❤❤

      Thank you for all the tips! The pockets are topstitched at the opening, and actually stay pretty well in place. Why it is bulky is because I changed the line of the silhouette and the pockets sits in the same line on the pattern as my width extension. That's why they lay kind of funky. I won't make any changes in this particular dress, but there will be other, similar patterns in the future where I will take the lessons from this project into account for sure. Thank you so much for all your thoughts on the project, I will absolutely incorporate them in future projects! 🙂❤

    Your shawl is gorgeous, Well done!!! And it draws the attention up your lovely face 🥰 With the pockets, have you thought about taking them out and putting pockets on the front, but put the stripe on an angle? Does that make sense? ( i have a rather large tummy and thighs, and cant wear anything with side pockets)

      Thank you, that is so sweet of you! ❤ I think that is a lovely idea about the pockets, I might just do that the next time I make a pattern like this. I have to say though that I'm loving this dress more and more each day, and I have pretty much been living in it since I made it. So I'm just going to leave this one as is, but I do have the intention to make more dresses similar to this one, and I really love your idea about the pockets! I will for sure make a dress with pockets like that. Thank you!

    I am plus sized too. And a tip i learned for style is to accentuate your positive instead of hiding what you are self concious of. I used to wear shapeless tunics to cover up but i changed to fit and flare dresses because my top part is the best. I feel much better in those even though im heavier than i have ever been.

      This is so important! Because that is exactly what we all should think. The mere concept that we should hide our bodies because they are not following a standard that is impossible for the majority of the people on this earth to live up to, is just crazy. And it is a type of crazy I'd like to do my part in getting rid of. It isn't our bodies that need to change in order to fit into what hangs on the clothes rack in the fast fashion industry, it is the clothes that should be adjusted to the bodies we have. So yeay for accentuating what we love about ourselves, and no more hiding of our strong, capable bodies that carry us through life! 👏💪❤
