  • Finally found a source for a black ABS version of the project enclosure box SolGato uses for its wired remote and decided it was time to build a sexier new and improved version.
This time around I decided to combine the control for trim actuators into one single rocker and used a truly waterproof switch this time instead of a pair of water resistant switches, and mounted the new single large switch to the front of the enclosure instead of atop where the two smaller independent switches were previously.
I was also having issues with moisture and potentiometer reliability which was causing hiccups and reduced top speed, so this time around I went with sealed Ip67 rated pots.
Combining the motor trim control into one single DPDT rocker required I run new heavier gauge wire, and although the X2 14GA marine duplex wires are more flexible than the X4 18GA wires I was previously using, I’m still not happy with the large bundle and lack of flexibility of the harness, so I’ll likely install a relay controller and run lighter gauge wire to get back some flexibility.
I am also considering switching from wireless key fob remote control of the bimini hardtop to wired, with the control switches also mounted in the wired remote enclosure with separate relay controllers used as well to keep wire gauge to a minimum.

Impressive project! Сouldn't help but wonder if the actuators you incorporated into your application are from Progressive Automations maybe? :)

Well since you asked, yes unfortunately they are Progressive Automation actuators.
I say unfortunately because within the first year they have failed and when I reached out to ask if replacement limit switch boards were available, I was informed that they were not, and was only offered a 20% discount on my next purchase.
I use to recommend them because of the support and warranty, but what’s the point of spending more on your product if replacement parts aren’t available and you don’t honor your warranty?

Pots on the side for speed control of each motor?

Yes, that’s correct. No tiller or rudder. Instead, forward and reverse independent thrust are used to propel and steer the boat.
