I'm into the same type of quilting you are. I love the patchwork fabric. I need to get some. I use a sashiko needle for stitching my Kawandi lap quilts. There are different lengths, and it has a large eye. I think the hand stiiching gives it a warm old-fashioned look. Thanks for sharing.

I like the idea of having the lining in at the beginning. I use DMC pearl cotton size 8, but went on to use the crochet thread when I couldn't find the DMC. Plus it was getting pricey. I'm thinking of doing a fall or Halloween table runner next. I stitch a bit closer together not the traditional thumb measurement and tend to tear the fabric instead of cutting with scissors. I'm interested in slow stiching, boro, and sashiko. I think this lead me to Kawandi.

I'm on my 12th kawandi. 7 are placemats made on machine for sturdiness. But I prefer the handsewing. As you see, leaving ample seam allowances is ctitical. In the spityou show by the bird fabric, you can seal the flap of blue with a washable fabric glue. I've used a couple brands with good results. I have never used a filler layer as I'm not making these for warmth. I like your colorful fabric choices. Thanks for posting.

I am on my third Kawandi. (Lap size) I've made the same mistakes as you have and still do. I get some puckering on the back and redo it or leave it. This process is for me. Slow stitching, easy, no worries about cutting and matching seams perfectly. I love the feel of fabric and the hand stitching. I first saw this process on k3n and Marions World on UA-cam. Thank you for sharing your Kawandi journey.

Loved your video, did a very small one. I used a small pointed nose pliers to help me pull needle thru thick layers, saved my arthritic hands, also pinning helped with the fiddling. U might try running your thread thru bees wax tohelpkeep it from knotting. You have inspired me to tackle a larger project. Thanks ever so much

I've made a couple of runners and you're correct about the typical mistakes! One frustrating thing for me is the lining begins to bunch up when you are getting close to the middle. All I could do is cut a slit in the lining and overlap the lining to smooth it out. It turned out fine but it did add an extra layer to sew thru. I used an old cotton sheet also. Thanks for your video!

If I were making a kawadi inspired throw, I would not add the corner pieces until the very end. Otherwise, they would drive me crazy being in my way for the first few rounds. Actually, I would not add those corner pieces at all, because I am not striving to make an authentic kawandi, I just like the technique. There are a few other things I would do differently too, just out of personal preference.

I learned my lesson the hard way when I stopped my project at Row 30 and didn't write it down. Took forever to get on track. Also worse. During a project I borrowed that size of needle for a different project simply by putting stitches on a string. Not the first time. When I went back to the project on a string I put the piece back onto the wrong size needles. Sometimes I use a different size than pattern calls for. I only noticed after many new rows. I try now to always make myself a note.

That length of cotton is daft! It should never be that long. It just makes life difficult. It's easy, at least on this particular method of sewing, to hide all your knots if that's what you're worried about. At least shorter lengths of cotton are easier to use and don't cause problems. You're doing a running stitch through four layers of fabric, right? As both pieces folded over makes four layers. To make a very invisible knot, when you reach the end one thread, leave the tail hanging free poking out of the centre of the four layers. In other words, as you reach the end of the thread and need to change it, on the final stitch only sew through TWO LAYERS, not all four so you come out between the two fabrics. Then on your new piece of thread don't knot it. Start your first stitch where the other ended...in between both fabrics, and stitch through the two layers that you didnt with the last stitch. As you draw your needle through, leave a tail the same length as the last cotton and continue sewing. At the end you can tie off all the side-by-side tails to each other, leaving the knots buried in the centre of the four layers - meaning you can't see it from either side of the quilt.

I am using cotton crochet thread. It was more economical than using embroidery thread as I was told if using embroidery thread , you would need all six strands.

I've made one Kawandi, lap throw size, and really enjoyed the process as well. And yes I ran across some of the issues you've spoken of here. There were a couple of places where I just did some hand stitching to hide a loose seam. I used a piece of old soft flannel sheet for my "batting" layer, so it didn't move around as much and gave it a really nice weight. You've inspired me to give this another try! I'll probably stick with a smaller throw quilt, though! Thanks for sharing your journey!

Yes, we do and I am so thankful it was mostly tree damage and fencing. We recently got an estimate on our roof. Apparently, the whole west side needs new shingles and all the vents need to be replaced. But it could have been so much worse.

After making a few Kwandi quilted pieces I have learned that your thread shouldn't be longer than your arm double. Passing through the fabric wears on the thread. I also use .cotton thread because I find it to be strong and economical. Sometimes I use beeswax on my thread. I go by how smoothly the thread moves through the needle. On your first project ironing the outer edge is very helpful. Also ironing one edge of the fabric since your already ironing. This is such a slow soothing stitch. Also since you have a long needle you can practice two stitches at a time and maybe even work yourself up to four. Lastly Kwandi quilting was created by the Siddi women in India. Portuguese traders enslaved women in Africa and took them to India. Thank you for saying its “Inspired”. Can't wait to see your second video.

Thank you for this, great video, very clear. As an experienced old lady I believe you’d be better off with a shorter thread. The thread wears out as you pull it through with your darning needle. It’s easy to hide finishing off and knots. I’ve not yet made a kawandi but I’m going too. Great thread choice, to stop the kinks allow your needle to hang down and spin.
