this video and channel as a whole is so crazy fascinating to me i can't explain it. i don't think i've ever come across a more cynical "video essayist" that i deemed worth watching. i have such polar opposite beliefs to you it's kind of insane. like the nihilism permeating through this channel depresses my spirit but in a weird way i can't stop. the dirk analysis was awesome. i like how you framed his (and alpha dave's) character as a collection of not emotions, but goals and actions. that's the way dirk tries to view himself, though of course he's forcing it, and really he's pretty bad at judging himself objectively. because when you do view dirk through that lens, damn, he really is a total failure. and i like the follow through in revealing "friendship" as the secret fourth thing tying together all these stories about heroism. it's a bright glimmer of hope in what is otherwise a pretty dark video in terms of messaging. in the same way that you say homestuck "should have" ended as it originally did, this video "should have" ended with the conclusion of dirk's character in the original comic, but it didn't. because it also covers the sequel materials of homestuck, this video suffers(?) from the exact same gulf in tone and topic as the story that it covers, as evidenced by other comments. "the (original comic/first half of the video) is alright, but the (epilogues/latter half of the video) is just terrible fanfic." the first half of the essay mirrors homestuck's somewhat cynical, but overall hopeful tone; the second half mirrors homestuck 2's gratuitous pessimism (at least until the fix-it portion). i don't mean to draw this parallel as some long-winded roast. i just think it's interesting that every discussion revolving around homestuck kind of boils down to the juxtaposition of the "objectivity" of hussie's writing, versus the "subjective" homestuck^2. and the same goes for everyone that reads this weird as hell story. it starts strong, keeps you enthralled for a few thousand pages, wavers in quality, ends limply, and follows up with active antagonization of the audience. and that creates this bitter, spite-filled creativity in basically everyone who gets invested in it. i haven't read the homestuck epilogues or homestuck^2, but to be honest, rather than warning me away, this video just made me more curious about them, if morbidly so. everyone writes the ending they want to see. you can see it in homestuck itself, and you can see it here. blatant, unapologetic, self-indulgent storytelling, an engine of pure catharsis for the author, an implicit thesis on who they are as a person. and though it can manifest as nonsensical narrative choices and backwards character writing, i don't think that attitude is inherently a bad thing. at the very least, it can channel that small hope lingering behind the crushing resentment of current circumstances, and pour it into an optimistic hypothetical alternative. anyway, yeah. homestuck is a narrative of a narrative of a narrative and any meta commentary on it just deepens the rabbit hole of the fourth-fifth-sixth wall breaking bullshit. the whole structure of the story is mind-numbingly self-aware to the point of being kinda miserable, but hell if it isn't interesting at least.

vriska certainly isnt a good person, but to say she isn't a good and complex character only shows your inability or maybe even refusal to engage with/understand her character. you obviously dont have to like her, but so much of this video and so much of your hatred towards her seems to come from a very vague and surface level understanding of her. for one, her murderous habits pre-comic are very explicitly stated to be due to her lusus. she has to feed her or else she'll be eaten. this kill or be kill situation combined with alternia's generally harsh and violent atmosphere are pretty clear ingredients of a person who has a hard time grasping the seriousness of something like death, which also contributes to her own willingness to throw her life away when faced with dangerous and seemingly unbeatable foes. then you take eridan's introduction page where he very explicitly mentions that he has something of a genocide complex and yearns for the death of all land dwellers, an ideology he has no real explanation for other than classism. to act as if eridan is "more worthy" of redemption isn't really any kind of point. im not arguing that he's a horrible person, he's just kind of a nothing character. you clearly like eridan as a character, and that's totally fine, but it's not like homestuck has any kind of... limit to how many characters can be redeemed. eridan simply doesn't serve a very big narrative purpose outside of murderstuck. im aware this is kind of an old video, so you may not hold these opinions or feelings on the subject anymore, but i think i just wanted to ramble about it a little haha
