    Hi there! question regarding a 1541... When I turn on the drive, there are no lights at all, but I can hear the motor and see the (don't know its name) circular thing which goes in the middle of the diskette spinning around like yours ... do you have any idea about what could be the problem? many thanks in advance and for your time

    • @RavenWolfRetroTech
      @RavenWolfRetroTech 4 дні тому

      The 1541s natural state is for the drive to be spinning and the computer built into the drive has to be executing code in order for it to stop. A spinning drive with a red light is much like a black screen of death on a C64 (i.e. its just not running). Like the C64 this can be caused by a lot of things but, since you have no lights, I would start by checking the voltages. For detailed troubleshooting for the 1541 I highly recommend Ray Carlson's fix file found at portcommodore.com/rcarlsen/cbm/1541/fix1541.txt

    • @RavenWolfRetroTech
      @RavenWolfRetroTech 21 день тому

      I will show it in the next video which I am working on as we speak. I was hoping for Sunday but the CRT has a leaky cap so I am going to have to add in a recap. Once the CRT is removed from the case there are 3 clips that can be removed which will free the front glass!

    • @Netrats42
      @Netrats42 21 день тому

      Great! Yeah, I am hoping that all I need to do is to take off the top and bottom covers, then I can remove the front panel, then the glass of the crt without disturbing anything else. But at some point, sounds like I should also probably inspect for leaky caps too, sigh.

    • @RavenWolfRetroTech
      @RavenWolfRetroTech 21 день тому

      Once the top cover is off its just 4 screws and a few connectors. Then the CRT just lifts out, no need to remove the front or bottom covers IIRC. As for the caps I was really surprised to find one leaking as the caps from this era are pretty reliable. You may find that you are just fine.

    As a kid I wanted one of these SO BAD but they were big bucks. Later I found a genuine CBM ( Commodore Business Machines) D 9090 hard drive originally devoloped for the PET line of Commodore computers. You had to buy an interface which adapted the serial to the interface used by the CBM drive. If I remember correctly it was IEEE488. It worked but damn that hard disk was finicky. Seemed really fast compared to floppy disks BUT it actually read everything Serially so whenever the disk had to be searched, it always started at the very beginning of the disk. Very slow access times but Hey, I had a hard drive in 1985. Nobody else I knew had one. My entire C64 floppy collection fit on that hard drive.

    Nice Video. There is a chassis version though, where the drive mount is a little different and not screwed in from atop. On those versions, you need to remove the CRT to be able to remove the drive mount or the drive itself, as it screws in from the sides.

    Hoping yours has Floppy Drive problems when it starts, cause the one I bought had PLA problem. I fixed that, but haven't torn into the floppy drive to see if I can fix it. I've been debating Jiffy Dos in all of my 1541s... anybody got experiences to say yes or no. Back in the day, I cut the 2 sets of jumpers that set the drive number and put a couple of red flip switches on the drives so I could do backups. I want to do that again to all of my 1541s. It worked great. I know you can use software to do it, but I liked the physical and also was fufilled that I could change my environment to suit my needs. Got married had kids, had no room and gave my stuff to my brother in law 20 plus years ago. Kids raised, I went back and got all my toys from craigslist, ebay, and facebook marketplace. Hoping I live to be a 100 to keep on enjoying my childhood. I don't never wanna grow up.

      Doh, UA-cam ate my reply so here's a synopsis... Jiffy Dos - This has become non-optional for me. The speed is nice but the ease of use is invaluable. I love the puzzle solving of a repair so I am good with issues. I have plenty of PLAs due to a friend making new ones from NoS S100 chips which are more reliable than the CBM ones. I do constantly find myself short on 6526 CIAs and VIC-IIs though. I always had to sell my old gear to afford the new stuff so I too had to start finding the replacements online. The Stone collection kinda blew that out of the water for 8-bit stuff and the KPTV Amigas fixed me up for the Amiga. The only thing I really need to revisit one day - but not too soon - is the Apple II and SOL-20

    • @jamesmaddox40
      @jamesmaddox40 24 дні тому

      @@RavenWolfRetroTech Never could afford the Apple II back in the day. That however is what I trained on in High School.. Apple II Plus, and Apple II E. I finally scooped up an Apple II with a working Orangish screen color for the text. The ones above had the greenish tint. I also had a couple Floppy Disk boxes of Software shipped separately from of all places an actual shipping port with boats. The USPS promptly lost the software never to be found, but to my surprise the Apple II loaded it's home screen and after turning knobs on the monitor to brighten the text I found the computer and monitor worked. I still have my programs disks from class in 1985. I had written a 3D rotation of a stick figure pyramid back then. I was so proud. I think I finally picked up the DOS software for the 5 1/4 floppy drive. I got so excited I forgot the mention that I got maybe 2 drives if I'm remembering right.

    Tip: never use Q-tips with isopropyl alcohol on them to clean drive heads. Instead, always use the correct rotating cleaning diskette with the correct, special cleaning solution applied to the actual padded disc part.

    • @RavenWolfRetroTech
      @RavenWolfRetroTech Місяць тому

      As a consumer this is correct. Improper cleaning could cause damage and there are high voltages in the drive that could cause injury to the unaware. I do use a cleaning diskette regularly, However, the proper way to clean a drive by a technician when servicing is with a swab and alcohol. In fact, in my floppy disk cleaning video there are some instances where the cleaning disk would not clean the heads and even a swab took several minutes to remove the severe contamination from bad disks.

    Just found you, and I've been a Commodore User since 1982. I was in the Lynchburg 64's back in the day and loved it. Wish my children could have had those experiences. I worked out of town as an Ironworker in the early years of my marriage, and my wife got addicted to our Commodore 64. To this day she still loves The Commodore 64 Jingle Disk. ua-cam.com/video/B4OcPxzT5Pk/v-deo.html She also loves Law Of The West ua-cam.com/video/IrMk9RyCWKI/v-deo.html And Perry Mason Case Of The Mandarin Murder (I just bought this from your website) ua-cam.com/video/7WbpTmg5Agk/v-deo.html I had a ball typing in the games from the backs of Run, Ahoy, Compute, and Compute's Gazette. I also enjoyed dissecting the programs and rewriting what I could. Save your data was a first lesson I learned. I was at the keyboard a couple of hours one night typing in a First Aid Program in basic. Instead of stopping and saving it a little at a time, I kept typing. A thunderstorm came up, and knocked out the power. All of that work was lost. The Automatic Proof Reader was my first thing I was proud of accomplishing. Back in the day before I could afford a numerical key pad. I rewrote the keyboard entry part of the program, when the magazines went from decimal 3 digit numbers to hexadecimal and used the letters h, u, i, o, j, k, l, m etc... then I could enter the data with both hands. I loved it. Will definitely be purchasing other things from you.

      Hey there James, I love the automatic proof reader when it came out. BTW, It looks like this comment got caught in the UA-cam filter due to links so that's why I took so long to notice it, sorry. I generally don't approve those just because of the spammers and the fact that I have to check each link but, since I saw it was you I went ahead and let it through.

Like you do here though, still need to dry each one right away so there's no cleaning residue left on them. Yuk! :) Cleaning keyboards is my least favorite thing haha!

      Hey Alex! I actually had a mention of using the ultrasonic cleaner in my footage but I cut it because its really only good for getting the dust out of the underside. We used an ultrasonic cleaner in my business for a couple decades and we learned early on that plastic can easily be pitted by excessive run times. I have run them before for about 6 minutes but that only made the cleaning slightly easier so I cut the footage since most people don't have an ultrasonic cleaner. I know what you mean about it being a bit of a chore. I wasn't kidding about the cleaning in front of the TV with the wife and the dogs. I still never found that lost screw!

    My original disks from the 1980s have been pretty good, but they were stored in a dry cupboard, but I did transfer them all over to "new old disks" I shipped from the US to Australia. The other big problem in "testing" old disks is the dirt they put on your drive head and the damage they can cause, and then the need to clean the drive head. Unless it's something special, I've found it simpler to download from the net the program and then transfer it to a "new old disk". Doing a lot of testing old disks will put a lot of wear and tear on the drive.

    I still use my HP-22 business calculator given to me by my father long ago. 1975 vintage, had to have a whole new battery setup as the old removable battery along with part of the case, the contacts, and about an inch of trace from the circuit board had been yanked off. But the new battery pack fits and holds a charge, and I love using this thing because 1) I'm proficient with it, but also because 2) it turns heads. People think it's from another planet!

      Sadly, because I moved to the Amiga in 1988, Most of my disks were lost (I was in the Army at the time). Fortunately one box of about 10 disks was saved including my DDM source code and they all read fine. Funny enough if you saw my earlier video (2020?) where I thought the back sides were bad on a couple, I later realized that they were written on my C128/1571 using a little KERNAL hack I had created (called Duo-Drive) that let me use side one as device 8 and side 2 as device 9 in 64 mode, so they cannot be flipped in a 1541 as they are spinning backwards.

I have played some of the games with my kids on emulator, Epyx World Games, Winter Games, Sea Horses, Ultimate Wizard and Wizard of Wor. They enjoyed it and I think we will have a lot of fun with this. Thanks!

    As someone who's been rescuing and archiving floppy disks for 30 years, I was happy to see 99% of the advice here was exactly right, and very well presented. The only comment I have is that it isn't necessary for the alcohol to dry inside the disk, as it evaporates very quickly and also acts as a lubricant. In fact, letting the alcohol sit on the wafer for a longer period of time may actually slightly dissolve the binder. So rather than wait for the inside to dry, just go ahead and image it. (A better lubricant is cyclomethicone, which is very slick and evaporates after a few minutes; it's good for reading those "screechy" disks where the binder is dissolving.) Also, you kept referring to the disk jacket as a "sleeve" -- the sleeve is the paper folder a diskette is stored in; the jacket is the physical container of the wafer inside. But that's a minor niggle, and overall this is a great video. I look forward to your next videos!

    • @RavenWolfRetroTech
      @RavenWolfRetroTech 2 місяці тому

      I will look into cyclomethicone as I was wondering if there was a good way to lubricate the jacket sleeve😅😎🤓 This is a well worded Compliment sandwich! Many internet users could learn a lot from this post on how to correct someone without trolling! Seriously, Thank you for the corrections.

    This may seem like an odd question, but, why use Jiffy DOS on a Commodore 128 computer and its 1571 Disk Drive? They both have a burst mode (fast made). So, what else is Jiffy DOS used for? 🤔

    • @RavenWolfRetroTech
      @RavenWolfRetroTech 2 місяці тому

      Remember that in a list of questions, every other one is odd! Even if the speed is similar, I really love the abbreviated syntax for DOS commands in JiffyDOS. Besides that I have the HD-20 and RAMLink that support JiffyDOS and I don't think I would do well using different command syntaxes for some drives. Then there is the elephant in the room! We all know that most 128s spend the majority of their lives in 64 mode. Back in the day I used 128 mode for 80-column text editing (With Word Writer 128) and Assembly coding (With the LADS assembler). Even then the code I was writing would only run in 64 mode as would most of the software and games I owned,

    I received a non working Oceanic OC-118N drive last year and all it had was a mechanical problem where it jammed the disk so hard that the motor wouldn't turn properly. It came with a floppy inserted, and the disk inside was all mangled and deformed around the hub ring by the motor trying to spin it. After repairing the drive I cleaned that floppy like you did with the same cleaning jig and a q-tip just for the fun of it. When both sides of the q-tip got a dark brown color I had little hope it'll work. But to my surprise, both sides of the floppy wrote and read error free ;-)

    Excellent video and perfect timing. I have been cleaning and imaging a very large collection of disks. Mostly magazine and user group disks. I know most of these are already imaged so I don't stress too much. But my own personal collection is another story and I am getting through most of those. My own collection needed very little cleaning. My large lot of Loadstar and Compute!'s Gazette disks on the other hand were really bad. I had to resort to removing the disks from the jacket and that resulted in a good percentage imaged. A 1571 and a zoomfloppy with nibtools is perfect for imaging and testing these old disks. I have done over 2000 to date and still a lot to go. No where near the 10-20k you have though! Yikes that is daunting.

      Thanks RacerX. I have not tried the 1571 with my ZoomFloppy, just a 1541. I'll give it a try. I have noticed that magazine disks are usually very low quality and have had terrible recovery rates with them

    • @RacerX-
      @RacerX- 2 місяці тому

      @@RavenWolfRetroTech Yes I have found the same. Though I have some exceptions it seems the disks they used were not great. Especially true for the Loadstar disks in the newer issues of the early to late 90s. I can usually tell by looking at the jacket what kind of disk it is. The ones with circular rivet marks seem to be better and the ones with no rivet marks on the back seem to be Athana. Their early first 2 years or so they used Opus disks (they actually were a reseller too) and I found these did not hold up. If you open the disk you will see the liner has turned mostly brown. To me this is the liner going bad either from excessive heat or chemicals I am not sure. But I do have duplicates of some issues from collections that were stored at room temperature and some of them are fine. The liner is saturated with some kind of lubricant. So perhaps that lubricant on some brands turns bad after time? Also I have found that the 1571 in particular is very sensitive about junk on the disk. The squeal sound you showed I have heard all too many times and usually like you,I find the disk now has grooves on it. Using a 1541 though I have really not found that to be an issue. I am guessing since the 1571 has 2 heads there is more touching the disk vs the 1541 that has a felt pad on the top that actually seems to clean the disk a tad bit. I have noticed that if I image a disk that shows errors then do the backside often it is fine. Then if I flip the disk again to do the front it comes out fine. I guess it has to do with the felt pad sweeping away some minor crud. The 1571 just collects it in the grooves of the heads. Anyway if you ever need someone to test something or bounce ideas off for this stuff, please feel free to contact me.

      I have passed a few boxes of user disks, along with some MECC disks and magazine disks, on to members of PDX Retro Forest and am going to have a way for Patrons to get them for the cost of shipping... With DDM taking a ton of time over the last year I have been feeling like I need to get them to people that will enjoy them more. Right now they take a ton of space in my storage shed and, while dry, are still deteriorating as time passes.
