Longshaw Estate and Padley Gorge 7th October 2024. #peakdistrict #autumn #woodland #nikond850
I attempt to photograph two subjects in this video. Rutting deer and Autumn. This turned out to be too ambitious to do all in one morning. I made a wrong turn and decided that the rutting deer will have to wait for another day. I did meet up with a very young deer. A by product of a successful rut. You can get an impression of what autumn is looking like in both the Longshaw estate and at the end the amazing Padley Gorge. I also play a game with compositions in this video. All feedback on that part of the video accepted.

The last time I visited Dovedale was 2011, so it was about time I went back and re-explored the area. In this video I arrive at sunrise to be faced with mist rolling through the valley. The best view of this would be from the top of Thorpe Cloud. However that is a 40 minute plus slippery walk up and it's a big up, an elevation of 287m. Seeing as mist does not hang around for long, I hand launch...

    It's funny Craig, I've just been fielding/deleting a bunch of comments about drones from a video I did about the NT and their policies (amazing how folks seem to believe that me passing on public statements and 'rules' makes me responsible for them!). Whilst you're right about the CAA being responsible for the control of airspace, there is a court ruling from a while back that gave landowners rights and protections in what is called the 'lower stratum' in which drones operate (it's one of the reasons why someone can't just build a bridge over your house!). This suggests that a landowner has limited rights to protect the space above their ground and or buildings to a height of 500 feet if meeting with certain criteria (protection of stuff on the ground for instance). To date loads of people have told me that this isn't applicable, including a load of these drone channels, yet when I ask them for some source evidence which goes against that case, they can never provide any, always pointing me back to 'such a video did it'. Food for thought nothing more but it does suggest that the NT does have the right to place a rule, whether that rule has any more base to it than a 'keep off the grass' sign is another matter. And NT staff definitely have no idea about their own rules, I asked a few of them about various things, including a property manager, in my research for that particular video they had no clue whatsoever. Congrats on hitting past 800.

      @craig.yates_photography4907 5 днів тому

      Hi Dave. Interesting about the airspace. I was not aware of that. All these no flying rules seem to comes across as deterrents. Very difficult to police as well. In the video I watched the NT rep said he would be reporting the drone pilot to the relevant authorities, but could not name who they were? All these rules could be open to interpretation as well. "You cannot take off on private land", what if I take off from my hand? Thank you for watching.

    Hi Craig thanks for the mention at the start of the video 😊 Unfortunately you weren't in the best location for the Rut (I'll send you a message on IG) I was in the area over the weekend and got some great images of the Red Deer. You definitely aren't too late, the Rut should still be going for at least another week. I was in Longshaw on Sunday and it was great. I found lots of fungi including Amythest Deceiver. I love the concept 'Do you see what I see' but as you mentioned you need to do a Full 360° pan once you've found a composition. There are some fantastic tree's on the Estate

    Hi Craig firstly congratulations on nearly hitting 800 subs.....surely you'll reach it in the next few days. Those drone images and footage were stunning. I also have the mini 2 and have considered upgrading but wasn't sure if the 4 Pro had much more than the 3 pro. I assume you compared them? @craig.yates_photography4907 27 днів тому

      Hi Paul, Yes i did compare the image quality and there is a noticeable difference from the Mini 2, (mini 3 difference negligible) I shot using the pano options as each part of the pano comprises of a full resolution frame at 12mp, which when edited gives you scope to crop as desired. You can choose the 48mp option, but this has not so far given better quality images. Not having to use your phone is a big step forward, and gives you a quicker start up time, nice big screen as well. You do need to connect to your phone as a hotspot to give the controller an internet connection for access to the maps. I downloaded the Dovedale area in advance just in case there were no phone signal. The controller is also compatible with the new DJI NEO. A fantastic video :) And some truly fantastic photos, and footage especially of the 2nd Waterfall which I shall get round to visiting in the not too distant future :) - when there is also maybe a bit more "Hybrid Autumn."

    Great vlog and shots gents. Not been here but it’s on the list. Picking a top 3 of the Peaks is so tough and I change my mind on this regularly. So , currently I’d go for 3 Goyt Valley (riverside walk past the reservoir), 2 Howden Reservoir and the Crow Stones 1 Winnats/Mam Tor for an inversion. Padley on the subs bench but only just

      Hi Drew. As we travel round and experience all the different Peak District locations, I am pretty sure that our opinions will continue to change. Your top 2 are areas I want to explore more, Goyt also sounds a worthy location to visit. I feel that I have overdosed on Padley and whilst it is an amazing location there is much more to explore in our Peak District National Park. Thank you for watching.

    Hi Craig I love that area and I'm heading over tomorrow after work and staying until Sunday afternoon/evening. I was up at The Roaches last Sunday evening and stayed overnight. The Heather is looking stunning up there and I think this weekend will be the Peak. Disappointed not to bump into Sir Eddie of Skelsontown 😂 but I've already met him in Padley Gorge last year. Hoping to bump into you one day so I can say 'Hello' 😊 I might be in The Lakes in October myself but not sure yet.

      Hi Paul. I am heading for Stanton Moor next, then probably back to the Edale area. Sir Eddie will probably go back to the Roaches to further survey his kingdom. If we do cross paths in the Lake district you will see me standing next to a not so smiling Helen, so please make your opening line "He has brought you to the most amazing place on earth". and watch her reaction. I hope you get some epic heather shots. Thank you for watching.

    Great vlog Craig, love Surprise view. The comparison between your RAW files and end image are great, you are probably going to cost me £1800 and more to get this. Just a question, is it a Nikon F fit lens I don't want to swap out all of my lenses

    • @craig.yates_photography4907
      @craig.yates_photography4907 2 місяці тому

      Hi Alan, Yes it is Nikon F-mount. The Raw files are awesome and continue to impress me. When you realise how good the dynamic range is you can just expose for the sky and not worry about exposure bracketing. For me the Nikon D850 is so capable for my needs I intend to get a second body soon. Thank you for watching.

    Hi Craig I definitely need to go back to this location. I've only visited a couple of times, once in the snow when I slid about 50m down the side of one of the hills (can't remember which one) and there was loads of mist (too much) the other time for sunset but the light was terrible. I've seen some stunning images from the classic location. Regarding the No.1 Peak District location I'd say it needs to be somewhere that offers multiple compositions at all times of the year and in all weathers. Although not one location I love around Surprise View / Padley / Longshaw Estate and Big Moor (White Edge) You can access all these from one parking location so that's my No.1 (location) I'll be on Big Moor the 1st weekend in October for the Red Deer Rut. If you've never been I'd definitely recommend a visit. You will need the 100-400mm lens

      Hi Paul, I am determined to get a cloud inversion sunrise this year. I know it will take a few attempts. I have also seen some stunning shots which challenges me to get my own. The walk up on Monday was relatively dry and easy. In the damp early morning autumn months it is not so easy to climb that hill. Big Moor Deer rut (not been there) sounds interesting. I will note that ,it could be up Eddies street as well. Agree with Padley, Surpise View, and Longshaw. Heather season is up next. Thank you for watching.

    • @craig.yates_photography4907
      @craig.yates_photography4907 2 місяці тому

      Hi Gene. First you need to ask yourself what more do you want from your photography? and what subjects do you photograph? D500 DX format 20.9 MP sensor to the D850 FX format 45.7 MP sensor will give you a leap in image quality. However the D850 will produce larger files for your computer to deal with. To get comparable image quality to the D850 in Mirrorless you would need to look at the Z7ii or the Z8. The D850 is at a very competitive price at the moment. Second hand FX lenses are also plentiful. Having said all that I will direct you back to the first line and ask yourself that question and work from there. The D850 is a very capable workhorse of a camera and has the ability to deliver stunningly detailed images. You are very welcome to reply with any further questions. Thank you for watching.

      @@craig.yates_photography4907 Thanks, Craig for a timely reply. My interest in photography is from a hobbyist perspective (not professional). I go for walks and shoot BIF and other animals. I have recently become interested in macro photography which led to my interest in the D850 with it's in camera stacking feature (not in the D500). I rented a D850 for a week and enjoyed using it. My PC handles the files just fine. However, I don't have a 4K monitor so most of the pics I took with the D850 did not look noticeably different from those I took with the D500. I tend to do a lot of cropping so the D850 should provide more pixels to work with. I only print what I believe to be exceptional pictures -- meaning not many :) I would likely not keep my D500 so my investment in a D850 could be manageable. Again, I appreciate your comments and advice. Regards, Gene

    I hate when people litter.I have a Nat Park about 8 miles from my house & it sits at the entrance to NY Harbor/ & Sandy Hook Bay. Tons of garbage wash up on the bayside shore. Probably swept into the water by wind plus currents & tides. Also, some people just leave it there because it is a carry in, carry out policy at the park & they don't want to put their days trash in their new vehicles. Really pisses me off. Anyway, some nice photos. I use the Nikon D810 & the MC 105G lens. Sometimes I think about getting a wider macro or extension tubes for the 105 plus a macro rail. You should get that cracked viewfinder replaced. Happy shooting.

      Hi Thomas, Littering is just not acceptable. As I walk through the countryside I see a growing number of dog poo bags just left on the side of footpaths. Do people think that these will get collected. Strange that people can make the effort the pack up the poo into bags, tie them up, but cannot quite manage to dispose of them into the correct bin. It makes my blood boil. Thank you for watching.

      @@craig.yates_photography4907 See that at the park mentioned also. The path is a heavily used paved path maintained by park maintenance & thank you that it gets picked up. One thing is there is a steady support of volunteers who do cleanups & get rewarded with a lunch. They usually don’t do some of the heavier littered areas along the bay. Park picks where they go. Probably because of a heavy tick population & some really mean poison ivy in the park, the areas they pick are limited. Thanks for relying, happy shooting.

    Hi Craig I also have a Ring Flash similar to yours and I've never actually used it out in the field mainly because as you said it's bulky etc. I have since bought an LCD panel (Neewer I think) very affordable and can be hand held or hot shoe mounted. I've not used this yet either but hoping to give it a try out in the field soon

    Ring flash seems to give a flat light , I had a blue Peter afternoon and cut up a pringle tube , a yogurt pot , hot glue gun , any old flash seems to fit up the end and hay presto , i have a handy macro flash set up . A bit of tin foil as a reflector if needed. Try it out doesn't cost anything, plus you can eat the pringles while you're at it 😂 Sour cream and onion are the best 😂

    Hello Craig, this is the first time I've seen any of your vlogs, no idea why it popped up but I'm glad it did, I'm going to watch your other episodes asap so I don't know if you in these you give more information of shutter speed exposure etc which as a novice I find very helpful. Also could you show the original and the edited versions of the photographs please. I have got the Affinity photo editing on my laptop but never used it, I try to keep my photos as seen but I also realise that to have jaw dropping images some "tweeking" is needed so any help on what you do with your images is highly appreciated. Right, I'm going to like and subscribe to your channel and look forward to catching up with the rest of your vlogs. Many thanks Steve H

      Hi Steve and welcome to the channel. In some of my videos I do put the camera settings with each image. Then I stopped, as the light conditions can vary so much and possibly seeing them might be misleading. However I do listen to my audience, so I will introduce them back in withing the next video. original and edited versions would be simple to introduce as well. For jaw dropping images you very much need a good base composition to work with, including some great light that's fits the scene, which does not always come together for us. Sometimes a jaw dropping scene needs very little editing as nature can do all the work for you. I shoot in Raw and hand edit every image. Thank you for subscribing to the channel and for watching the video. Go out and enjoy your photography it can be so rewarding.
