By all rights Fort Point should be gone? Why is it still here? Why did they build it? And why is so little known about this little Fort Hidden at the foot of the Golden Gate Bridge in the GGNRA?

I live in Fort Bragg and thoroughly enjoyed your video. I have been to and done videos of many places that you covered but your quality and narration is something I can only hope to achieve. Thanks for the excellent tour!
Thank you for your kind words. I simply love that part of our state. I was just there last week with my youngest. We spent 3 days in the Mendo Area and 3 up at Redwoods NP. And I know I will be back again!
Thanks for sharing with the Ford House.
You bet. 👍
Almost ! Media Barron's dictated where people went ,what was discovered and how history told ..no different today my friend ..very interesting doc .Aussie fan of history here also
Appreciate the comment!
Northern CA native; been to Muir Woods many times. Even had an exciting misadventure with some friends when we were in our early 20s. Started out hiking the Dipsea Trail down from Mt. Tam, and somehow lost the trail. We went up and down and over hills and canyons, and decided to just follow our compass north. We came out on a trail in the middle of Muir Woods, and took a while to catch our breath, get our bearings, and cool our feet in the creek. Then we hit the Bootjack Trail to get back to where we'd parked. Exhausting, but fun.
Great story. Thanks for sharing.
Born and raised in SF. Been to Fort Point many times. Mark Twain was correct: it's always cold and blustery out there...especially in the summer! I finally escaped to a town with real summers back in 2003 with my 2nd husband... ;-) Joseph Strauss was a genius!
Joseph Strauss was a genius!
Interesting!
Glad you think so!
Thanx for the history lesson. I would have never known.
It was a big surprise to me.
Nick, this video is so interesting and well done. Love the history and this will be on my visit list for SF. Thanks for creating such an interesting mini-documentary. Has this ever been used in a movie? Really great stuff. 👍
Thanks Gene, appreciate the love.
Dude. I think my wife and I just met you and your wife randomly at In N out OXNARD. Sat night 8/10/2024 .... I was surfing the tube and seen your clip lol then realized it was you ... we're laughing.. so random lol God bless yall 🤙🏽
Terrific Video
Dad had cool ‘tashe!
Really good Nick. Impressive!
Awww shucks. Thanks Clay!
Thanks for sharing. Well done!
Thanks for watching! I really enjoy making the videos so my pleasure.
95% of the original redwood habitat has been cut at least once since the 1850s. I could only imagine how much different our climate and ecosystem is today than it was prior to the 1850's.
Sad but true. Getting into the old growth areas and being in the presence of the giant redwoods is something everyone should do at least once in their life.
I grew up here. truly magical
What a wonderful place to call home. NorCal is so stunning! Thanks for the comment.
Just discovered your channel. Love your videos and you have inspired me to get back out into nature and explore Northern California
Can't tell you how happy that makes me. Get outside and enjoy!
Beautiful country, it's been many years since I've been. Getting there does require some effort, lol.
Just a tad... 😉 But well worth it!
Spent some time in the Modoc decades ago. Lots of open range still, some of the curious young steers will "hide" behind small shrubs to watch you, following along as you go. It can be a little unnerving. Kind of funny as well, lol. Enjoy!
So surprising how much range there still is. I think they are watching to see if you step in one of their paddies... "gotcha!"
Your videos are like an adagio movement in music. It’s beautiful and healing with full of your thoughts and nice music.
What a beautiful thing to share. Thank you.
It’s very possible in California.
I’ve just found your channel, I love the shots you take and the conversations you make. Love seeing you use paper maps and I’m looking forward to becoming a longtime watcher! Please keep it up 😊😊 I’m watching from Australia! 🇦🇺
Awesome! Thank you! That means the world to me. And I really appreciate you taking a moment to let me know. Thank You!
Hope you put brush back on road, this way no one will know you were there
Did I mention in the video the big pile of fresh Bear scat at the trailhead... Def did not want him knowing I was around.

The san Andreas won't distroy the city the low life people will and its definitely heading there now
Don't believe everything you hear 🙂, The City is booming right now with a new tech boom (AI) and lots of smart young folks moving in. San Francisco may have been down but it is definitely not out.
Camping off-the-grid in NorCal seems the MOST possible thing. 🤔
I think you may be right. So many spots to get away in that part of California. If you head east from the coast for just a few miles it thinks out fast.
Good vid, but dude...how do you keep the Unknown Coast unknown? Do your next vid over on hiway 1 somewhere, Fort Bragg, Point Arena, okay? ;o)
I hear you. Sometimes I wonder about sharing some of these spots... Thanks for the good natured comment.
As mentioned, the Mendocino Triple Junction is the main reason why this area is so "isolated." The mountains are rising so fast, the subsoil rocks have become so serpentinized from their time under the ocean, near rift zones, they have become so weak that the whole area is unsuitable for building roads or rails on. Roads and rails and ocean ports did once exist here for a specific purpose: Harvest the old growth redwoods that once grew here. The infrastructure was too difficult to justify maintaining once the old growth timber was harvested. Shelter Cove is not off the grid; it has an airport and a reliable road that that goes up the valleys and doesn't try to traverse along the coast. The rest of the area is very rugged.
I so appreciate the additional information you provide here. I was unaware of the stability issues with the geology. In hindsight this explains whey so many of the roads were repaired and in some cases unpaved. Thanks for sharing!
I,m glad you didn’t try the creek. Great video Nick.
You and me both! Thanks My Gene. Enjoy those tools from Lowes!
I was hoping he would pop out a folding kayak. LOL
For my 40th birthday we watched the Oct 14th 2023 annular eclipse from the Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge. We drove from Sacramento CA and my friend drove from Colorado Springs CO. It was a bit uncomfortable leaving Cedarville, there's not many people up in that part of the state. But it was amazing when we made it to camp and my friend from CO was waiting for us by the camp fire. I love the northeast corner of CA.
Wow... Sounds wonderful. It is a bit unnerving once you hit the dirt road and you know you are on it for a few hours.
Huel houser California’s gold does these. Upper left is miles from correct. Interesting fact.
Uh oh... Did I say upper left? That would be miles from correct... many miles.
@@HiddenCali. I recall about 2.3 m off. “Huel howsers gold”. ( many many years running history show). Yes first few miles into Oregon in California.
Well... lumber WAS hugely successful. Then the government killed it off.
There was some lumber industry there but I think there was easier lumber to harvest in other areas of NorCal.
The roads are passible in winter, just don't be a bad driver, and don't bring small two wheel drive cars like a scion or prius on roads they shouldn't be on.
Indeed. Gotta have the right tool for the job.
Are you heading to Lassen next now that the road through the park is open?
I’m thinking Lassen in the fall. Not sure where to next. Maybe a BLM location for some dispersed camping.
@@HiddenCali there's still snow up top and trail closures. August is usually a great time to go.
Been there. Shhhh!
It will be our secret. Crap! I made a video didn’t I…
Gee Nick I didn’t know you were such a WINER!
Actually you did. Just not anymore.
I wonder if Huell Howser was ever there?
Gosh I loved that Guy. I think he was based in SoCal so a lot of his exploration was in that area BUT he did get around.
@@HiddenCali Huell Howser showed a lot of California. Even though he was from Tennessee.
When I was a young teen and studying history my dad and I walked Captain Jack's Stronghold. It really brought the later lessons about westward expansion in school more meaning.
So true. It is amazing how a bit of context changes the entire experience. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for such a well done & interesting video of this area. Stumbled across your channel as we're planning Pacific Northwest travel. Subscribed!
Awww shucks 😊. Thank you for letting me know.
Never heard of the place ... but now I gotta visit!
Super cool. Great video Nick.
This is where our government gets its mars footage from
LOL… you might be right!
Waiting to die? Sorry but this city is and has been dead for over a decade. Use to be The place to go.
You might be right but I’m putting my money on San Francisco. The energy in the city right now is electric.
Hard to imagine such a devastating event, wow, 3/4 of any city homeless is monstrously difficult, and then the fire too, horrendous.
Right? Crazy devastation.
In your opinion, do you think it's worth the extra 6 hour + drive to see the redwoods in RNP or are the ones in Muir woods the same? I'm trying to plan a trip and need some advice. Thank you for the informative videos!❤
If you have limited time don’t do the drive. Redwoods national Park is spectacular but unless you’re going to spend a few days there and do some hiking Muir Woods is a wonderful place to visit. But make sure you spend a day to get to Yosemite!
Hehehe.thats nothing 3qtrs of Australia is like that
Nick, I’m hooked. Love you Dude.
Thanks Man! Much appreciated.
I'm a new Subscriber and can't believe there aren't more thumbs up and Subscribers to this Channel!!! I look forward to binge on all the stories. WELL DONE!!❤
Awwwww… shucks. Thank you.
I always remember Mendocino from Murder she wrote/Angela Landsbury
Great bit of history mate 👍
Thanks 👍
