Hard Mode: Difficulty, Agency, and Narrative Gates

Games are the only art form where parts of the experience are “gated” - revealed after completing challenges or making choices. In this wide-ranging video essay, Amabel Holland looks at this structure, where it came from, how it has developed, and how it’s been used in specific games to create meaning. She also touches on film and television, and the ways in which their norms and structures, im...

Replay Value: Repetition, Ritual, and Improvement
Переглядів 981Місяць тому
In this video essay, games weirdo Amabel Holland explores why she tends to play only one faction or character in games that have several. Is there value in focusing on a narrow slice of a game’s decision space? How does repetition interact with memory, learning, improvement, and creative play? Games discussed include the board games Root and Lost Ruins of Arnak, and the video games Tekken 7, Ne...

The Field of the Cloth of Gold 503rd Anniversary edition
I'll keep them in mind.
What a great recommendation!
Amazing content, please keep doing it!
I think to be a little pedantic I wouldn't say video games are the "only" art form with gated experiences but it's rare enough in other experiences that you could effectively use that term. For instance books in the ergodic family require effort to be fully understood and parts are gated until you gain the knowledge or material needed. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ergodic_literature
Dr Pepper hell yeah
Interesting to hear your thoughts on Theissen's designs; I like them too, but wouldn't mind a bit more detail.
im so excited to finally get my hands on this! ive got the release date marked on my calendar lol
Hey, this IS rad
Such a pleasant journey through this topic! Thanks so much for writing and assembling it!
I really enjoyed this video! Made me think a lot about my gaming preferences and what speaks to me most
Wow. This is very cool!
I'm so excited to see this getting traction. I hope you find nothing but the success you deserve. I would love to see more games like Lok in the world!
Oh! When it is released, where could I find it?
my alien friend said he bought a copy over at ╬╬█ÌÙ░≯̢̱̗̘̣͙̗̋̓̂<̴̡̘̭͎̤͉̝͖̌̃͠Ǫ̷̢͈̫͈̪͎̤̆̈́̉͆̿̐̕͝͠
Should be June 12. You can find it at hollandspiele.com.
the rule book kind of reminds me of the big spreads or fold out cover of Chris Ware comics
Very interested! Only question I have: is the game you figure out once you know the rules a solo game exclusively?
Yes.
@@Hollandspiele that is good to know. Thank you!
I bought this. Would love to see a five-minute playthrough to understand this system better. Thanks!
Awesome! Really looking forward to playing this. Great idea for game and so relevant today. I hope that shirt is included, very cool.
Thanks for the video. Board game discussions that both cover rules, as well as background information are always fun. Also cool to hear from the creator. Flint is a far ways off from where I live, but similar attempts to de-value, out turf or erase the contributions of workers were common here as well. It's a noble thing, striking for rights. I for one very much appreciate sick leave, hollidays and safe work environments.
I'm a big fan of Naomi Oreskes's work "Merchants of Doubt" ... This sounds really interesting.
Amabel, is your S&SII series of games available? I no longer see them on the Hollandspiele site. Thanks.
Fantastic video. The sections about memory != love and playing for improvement really resonated with me.
Hello, I don't know how I came across your channel, but I watched because of the Root meeples in the thumbnail. I am very different in regards to sticking with a single faction/character/thing, but that's not really what interests me here, and any complaints I might have don't matter because we don't know each other. What I wanna know is how do you pick your thing? If you're gonna play a game 50-60 times, how do you decide which option is right for you?
Barnaby! <3
So that was the second time I watched this and cried. You have no idea how important it is for me to hear these things.
The breakdown on fighting games reminds me of my sympathies for Ivy mains in Soul Calibur; some of her move inputs (like Summon Suffering) changed again and again with each sequel since SC2. King (SNK woman) is one of my favorites from KoF/AoF.
5 minutes into this.. I'm I'm still struggling with the "only play the birds" thing. Such a curious idea to ponder.
I loved the section about how memory is not equal to love. Thank you for sharing.
I love listening to your essays. I *love* them. But I feel like I’m fighting to hear you over the music in this one.
Lovely video!
I loved this video! Brilliant, funny, and honest
I own nato air commander which is brilliant! Are there different scenarios in the rulebook? Is it possible to set different difficulty levels? Thank you
Just one scenario and difficulty this time around. But there's a fair amount of variability and noise baked into the system, so it does result in quite different experiences from play to play.
@@amabel_holland thank you! I want Comet e That Others May Live. Your games are wonderful, but for us Italians (Europeans) it is very expensive to have them, given that the distributor is in England. It would be great if there was a distributor in Europe.
@@lucapiganzoli1045 Second Chance Games is our exclusive distributor. We will not be working with anyone else in Europe. They have introduced some cheaper shipping options.
Look for william reynolds, an ex WW1 Soldier who ran a resistance group in Brussels and was executed in 1944
Wow, this looks incredible!
instabuy. looks like brad has more impossible decisions in my future :). Thanks for the video Amabel!
Insta-buy for me! Great topic! Cool!
Thank you for the overiew ... looking forward to this one!
Very cool!
Years later, but thanks for the video explanation. I appreciate what you did for us future players.
Like it! Will be ordering it when it comes out :)
Great interview! Going down the rabbit hole of the show after your video, it was fun to learn more about the background of this amazing show.
Glad to enlighten you about Mao. I've never played it either but was aware of how it "worked."
Rough estimate of when your book might be released?
There was a bit of a commercial version of Mao called Quao
There was also a weird game show/reality named Solitary (and Solitary 2.0) that I really liked. Lot of different rules and weird mechanics that generated schadenfreudian dynamics (sometimes disgusting too).
Very nice overview. Looking forward to playing it! 😊
Game Changer is so much fun! My wife and I are binging it now after finding the first season on youtube.
It's surreal coming back here after hearing you double LPing with SB.
Huh, why's that? :-)
looks like a booring fight sequence
the map art by Ilya is great as usual, clear, functional but not austere at all.
Is this a new edition of 'Antony & Cleopatra' game?
No, this is a different war.
No, this is a new game with rules that are similar to Antony & Cleopatra.
